In WorldBox, I am a terrible scientist studying the collapse of fantastical nations

2 years 4 months ago

I briefly posted before the new year about WorldBox - God Simulator, and Graham wrote about it over the weekend, too. It is a world simulation game that has no resource costs or goals, just simulated events. You make a world, plop some animals and fantasy races into it (and if you want, a bunch of dragons and wizards) and see what happens. I cannot stop playing it. And I wanted to give some more detailed examples of how the simulation works, especially if you just leave it running with little intervention.

I am a WorldBox scientist, you see (though merely a BSc at the moment), and my first experiments suggest that every civilisation, along a long enough time scale, is basically doomed. Big 2022 energy. In the case of WorldBox, this may be because at some stage the scientist running the experiment will get bored and drop in e.g. a tornado. That's okay, because there are almost infinite experiments to run. I hope that isn't how the simulation I am living in is being run. Oh no. Don't think about it.

Elden Ring Is Steam’s Most Anticipated Game After Taking Top Wishlist Spot From Dying Light 2

2 years 4 months ago

Elden Ring From Software Dying Light 2 Stay Human Dark Souls

Elden Ring is seemingly the hype train that just won’t stop and with less than two months to go until release, it is now officially Steam’s most anticipated title.

That’s because From Software’s upcoming action RPG is now the most wishlisted game on Steam. It’s an impressive feat for Elden Ring as Techland’s highly-anticipated sequel to 2015’s Dying Light held that spot for 12 months, as reported by Eurogamer. Steam’s “Top Wishlists” page is a great indicator for Steam player hype, but unfortunately, it does not reveal any specific numbers.

Update: Dying Light 2 Main Story Lasts About 20 Hours

2 years 4 months ago

Dying Light 2 Stay Human 500 Hours

Update, 2:50 p.m. EST, 1/10/21:

Following this past weekend’s reveal that doing every single thing in Dying Light 2 Stay Human will take 500 hours (and less than 100 hours to beat the story, complete all side quests, and explore the map), Techland has told Game Informer that the main story of Dying Light 2 can be completed in about 20 hours.

“Completing all the side quests, learning about the world’s history, and engaging with all characters can easily take 80 hours or more, depending on playstyle,” Techland says. “Dying Light 2 takes place in a complex world filled with content and built both broadly and vertically.”

For comparison, Techland says that in the original Dying Light, finishing the main story and all side quests took about 30 hours.

“According to our internal QA testing, it takes about 500 hours to see everything the game offers – find every collectible, listen to every dialogue, fetch every easter egg, finish every possible ending, and visit every corner of the world,” Techland says. “We are fortunate to have a very passionate community of fans who have been returning to the original Dying Light throughout the last seven years, and we know they can’t wait to truly lose themselves in our latest work.”

Take-Two CEO Namechecks Midnight Club, Despite a 13 Year Wait for a New Game

2 years 4 months ago

After announcing one of the biggest acquisitions in game industry history, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick named his company's biggest franchises. It contained some expected names, and one outlier – Midnight Club, which hasn't seen a new release since October 2008.

Speaking in an investor call, Zelnick was laying out how he wants new acquisition Zynga to help bring its biggest franchises to mobile. Before doing so, Zelnick named some of the company's key properties: "Our labels are home to some of the most iconic brands in the world, including Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, Midnight Club, NBA 2K, BioShock, Borderlands, Sid Meier's Civilization, Mafia, and Kerbal Space Program."

It's a list of heavy-hitters from across Take-Two's developers, but Midnight Club feels a little out of place. Every name on that list has seen a new release in recent years, or is currently seeing development of a new one – except the Rockstar-developed Racing Series, which saw the release of Midnight Club: Los Angeles in 2008, before going dormant.

It's not clear exactly why Zelnick brought the game up in this context, although it's possible he's alluding to the series getting a mobile version in future. Within Zelnick's presentation to investors, Midnight Club is also included on a list of console and PC franchises that Take-Two sees as potential opportunities for mobile development.

Twisted Metal Reboot Reportedly Switches Developer to a Sony First-Party Studio

2 years 4 months ago

Sony's rumoured reboot of Twisted Metal is reportedly no longer under the remit of Lucid Games and instead has been handed over to one of Sony's first-party studios.

In a report by VGC, sources told the outlet that a reboot of the car combat series is still on the cards but that it is no longer being developed by UK-based studio Lucid Games – which created PS5 exclusive Destruction All-Stars – and instead has been handed over to one of its first-party studios in Europe.

Sony's European studios include Guerrilla Games (Horizon: Forbidden West), Housemarque (Returnal), London Studio (Blood & Truth), Media Molecule (Dreams), and new acquisitions Nixxes and Firesprite.

At present, neither Sony nor Lucid Games have inclined to comment in regard to the report. VGC states that the sources providing the information did not give a reason for Sony's change in developer, though one person did suggest that the mixed reception to Destruction AllStars could have factored into the decision.

AllStars was met with muted reviews when it launched last year. In our very own rundown of the game, we awarded it a 6/10, stating that it contained a "disappointing lack of depth beneath the loud crashes, bangs, and wallops that feel so exciting at first."

Rockstar Parent Company Wants Zynga to Turn Its Biggest Series Into Mobile Games

2 years 4 months ago

Grand Theft Auto parent company Take-Two just bought Zynga in a practically unprecedented $12.7 billion deal, and part of the reasoning is that it wants the opportunity to bring some of its biggest console and PC game properties to mobile.

In an investor presentation following the announcement of the deal, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed the deal and presented a slideshow to investors. Under a slide titled, 'Product Portfolios are Highly Complementary', Take-Two shows how the company's respective games and studios can be used in tandem.

Of particular interest to many fans will be the line-up of Take-Two games, with the likes of Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, BioShock and Mafia listed alongside a caption reading, "Opportunity to bring Take-Two's console/PC properties to mobile & add new game modes". Those games are paired with a list of Zynga's in-house studios, which are listed as having a "track record of successfully executing mobile game development."

Spec Analysis: PlayStationVR 2 - a shot in the arm for high-end virtual reality gaming

2 years 4 months ago

We've known it's coming for some time. Initial press and controller imagery from Sony was swiftly augmented by leaked specifications, now fully fleshed out via an announcement from Jim Ryan himself at CES 2022, along with more details from the PlayStation Blog. PlayStationVR 2 is now official and it's looking hugely exciting. In fact, from our perspective, high-end VR gaming in general needs a shot in the arm in a world where the mobile-based Oculus Quest 2 reigns supreme and the success of PlayStationVR 2 is our best chance of this happening.

The specs reveal a headset that pushes back boundaries in many directions, building significantly upon the successes of the first PSVR, radically improving screen fidelity, boosting immersion and ridding the platform of the complicated set-up that proved so frustrating for PS4 owners. On that latter point, PSVR2 should literally be plug and play: there's no breakout box, no external camera, no mixture of various USB and HDMI cables - everything is routed through USB-C, meaning that PSVR2 should simply plug directly into the front of the console and you're good to go.

The Eurogamer Podcast: unpacking Unpacking with creator Wren Brier

2 years 4 months ago

It's a new year and I've got a whole bunch of interesting people lined up for the Eurogamer Podcast already. Last year was great, relaunching the show, and the six episodes we've had should really give you an idea of where I want it to go. (Remember to check out the episode with departing editor-in-chief Oli Welsh if you haven't already, and then chase it with the Martin Robinson episode, because he's our new editor-in-chief.)

But remember, this is a show I want to consistently improve, so if you have any suggestions, I would genuinely love to hear them. Your support of the website is why I'm able to spend time on this so your opinion really matters. I hope you're enjoying the series so far.

Monster Hunter Rise: PC requirements, performance and the best settings to use

2 years 4 months ago

As we’ve already seen from the demo, the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise spruces itself up considerably from the Nintendo Switch original. It’s not a match for Monster Hunter World on overall visual fidelity and detail, but the upside is that it’s easy to go a-huntin’ at high frame rates even if you’re on low end hardware. To whit, Monster Hunter Rise’s PC requirements go even lower than World’s, only asking for a GT 1030 or Radeon RX 550 at minimum.

Monster Hunter Rise review: every bit as great as MH: World

2 years 4 months ago

After the roaring success of Monster Hunter: World back in 2018, the idea that the next big PC entry in Capcom's dino pants craft 'em up is a game that originally started life on the Nintendo Switch is bound to ruffle a few feathers. But far from being a step down from World, Monster Hunter Rise is every bit its equal - and Capcom's stellar work with this PC port has given it a much-needed buff and polish to really make it shine. Not only does Rise offer the same seamless and expansive environments as World, but it also adds a few new twists to make tracking down its titular titans even more enjoyable.

Take-Two buying FarmVille gang Zynga in $12.7 billion deal

2 years 4 months ago

Zynga, the company whose games made being Facebook friends with your family even more annoying, are selling to Take-Two. The owners of Rockstar and 2K plan to buy up Zynga shares in a deal that'll value the company at $12.7 billion (£9.4b). Take-Two hope to use Zynga's social and mobile expertise to make more games based on their games. Sure sure, #business and all, but I'd rather spend that much money on 9.8 billion Greggs sausage rolls instead of Grand Theft Autoville or something.

Every game should put web-swinging in it, regardless of the other content

2 years 4 months ago

One of the presents I got for Christmas this year was a copy of PS5 exclusive Spider-Man: Miles Morales. I had about a week where I was completely by myself this year, and I spent it being Spidey and self-yeeting around New York. It's a great game on many levels, and I especially liked that one of the outfits you can unlock through story missions is a scarf and ear warmers. Mostly though, it's just made me think that web-swinging is the most fun way to get around in games, and more games should do it. By "more games", I mean "every game".

‘Scott Pilgrim’ Anime In The Works At Netflix

2 years 4 months ago

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Anime

Netflix is developing a "Scott Pilgrim" anime with creator and graphic novel artist Bryan Lee O’Malley.

This news comes by way of The Hollywood Reporter, which reports that O’Malley will also write and executive produce the series based on his cult-classic graphic novel series (and subsequent film). Netflix is developing the adaptation with UPC, the group behind Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy and SyFy’s Chucky TV series.

Click here to watch embedded media

O’Malley is writing and and executive producing this Scott Pilgrim anime alongside the showrunner for Nickelodeon’s Are You Afraid of the Dark? series, Ben David Grabinski. However, it’s important to note that a series order has not been made, so the anime isn’t entirely off the ground just yet – it’s simply in the works for now. If it’s picked up for a full series order, O’Malley and Grabinski will serve as the showrunners.

What Do You Think About The Riddler’s Look In The Batman?

2 years 4 months ago

The Riddler The Batman Robert Pattinson Paul Dano Matt Reeves

The Riddler is an infamous Batman villain and one of the smartest in the world's greatest detective's rogues gallery. Having been around for decades, first appearing in Detective Comics #140 back in 1948, the character has been through countless iterations.

There’s the green tights version the world first met in 1948 and that slowly evolved into a green suit with purple accents. We also got more on-the-nose versions with some Riddler iterations dawning a costume covered in question marks and sometimes carrying a question mark cane.

Warner Bros. Pictures Frank Ockenfels, Warner Bros. Pictures

Frank Gorshin’s Riddler from the 1960s Adam West Batman series (and movie) played with both the green suit look and the green tights look. Then, we saw Jim Carrey step into those tights in 1995’s Batman Forever and that was the last silver screen appearance of the villain. However, we saw another take on the Riddler in that Gotham TV show years back, and that put Edward Nygma back in the flashy suit.

Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 2 Opening “The Rumbling” Is an Absolute Metal Banger

2 years 4 months ago

***Warning the following video contains major spoilers for Attack on Titan. We’d recommend simply listening to the video instead of watching it if you haven’t seen up until the events of Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 2.***

After what feels like an eternity, Attack on Titan The Final Season Part 2 finally arrived last night, starting off the second half of what appears to be the end of this amazing journey. To celebrate the second half of the final season, MAPPA released a brand new opening theme song for the show; and man is it ever a banger.

Titled The Rumbling, this OP is fully voiced in English, featuring a metal vibe to it. You can check it and the lyrics for yourself down below.

Rumbling, Rumbling, it’s coming
Rumbling, Rumbling

Beware

coming for you

all I ever wanted to do was do right things
I never wanted to be the king, I swear
all I ever wanted to do was save your life
I never wanted to grab a knife, I swear

tearless, fearless, burning, burning

you tell me what have I missed
still wandering in the deep mist

GTA Online Player Lands on Maze Bank From Mount Chiliad

2 years 4 months ago

Navigating your way up to the top of Maze Bank in GTA V and GTA Online has become an insane competition of one-upmanship over the years, as players do their best to reach the helipad of this skyscraper in the craziest ways. Despite having seen some pretty amazing attempts of the years, though, I’m not sure there will ever be anything that can beat the most recent attempt.

As you can see in the post the GTA Online subreddit below, user Accomplished_Mix_475 has just pulled off the impossible, as they managed to land on the top of the Maze Bank starting all the way from Mount Chiliad.

This insane act of witchcraft seems like it can only be done on the Faggio in GTA Online. Not only is it a motorcycle, allowing players to use the lean back method to inexplicably get more air, but it also is the lightest vehicle that can also pick up the necessary speed.
