New Scream 5 Featurette Teases Dewey, Gale & Sidney’s Return

2 years 6 months ago

While we’ve already had an official glimpse of the much anticipated Scream 5 sequel, Paramount Pictures has just released a brand new featurette promoting the return of its fast-approaching meta slasher series, which is set to arrive in theaters on Jan. 14.

Go ahead to check out the freshly cut footage down below:

The featurette is interspersed with several short clips of the OG cast. That’s right, beloved Scream characters Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox), Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) all look to be reprising their roles in this latest iteration, and it’s nice seeing each of them add a little bit of context as to how their specific characters make a return to Woodsboro.

“Ghostface is back and is scary as ever,” says Cox, before series screenwriter Kevin Williamson adds: “Now’s the time to make a new Scream, because we had a special story to tell that connects the legacy cast members with a new cast into the world of Woodsboro.”

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Races Past Mario Kart Wii To Become the Bestselling Game In the Series

2 years 6 months ago

Are we ever going to get Mario Kart 9? It's tough to say because Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch keeps selling gangbusters.

According to Nintendo's financial results for the second quarter of the fiscal year ending in March 2022, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 38.74 million copies on Nintendo Switch. It has now surpassed the lifetime sales of Mario Kart Wii, which is at 37.38 million copies.

The game has even outsold Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sits at 34.85 million copies sold. It was a huge hit last year, especially since it launched on the cusp of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mario Kart 8 originally was released in May 2014 for Wii U but eventually was ported over to Nintendo Switch as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in April 2017. In fact, both versions of the game were such a hit that combined, Mario Kart 8 is the best-selling racing game in US history. I mean, even the US President, Joe Biden, plays it.

Nintendo Switch has been on a roll lately. It was recently revealed that the console has sold another 8.3 million units over the past six months, which now brings its total lifetime sales to 93 million. However, it looks like sales will start slowing down a little bit since there is an ongoing semiconductor shortage.

Call of Duty: Vanguard review - fun filler that won't live long in the memory

2 years 6 months ago

It feels like a stop-gap year for Call of Duty. Developer Sledgehammer Games finds itself sandwiched in-between the mega sub-brands that are Modern Warfare and Black Ops, and has produced fun filler for fans to be getting on with. There's nothing wrong or bad or off-putting in this return to World War 2, but Vanguard does nothing exceptionally.

That return to World War 2 feels like a boring choice of setting. Sledgehammer's excellent Call of Duty: WW2 opened the door to the long-running shooter series for me, and after walking through I've spent thousands of hours in this new Call of Duty metaverse (sorry). But I struggle to get excited for another Call of Duty set in World War 2 - despite Sledgehammer's best effort to put a spin on storytelling.

All 9,000+ items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons' latest update catalogued by dataminers

2 years 6 months ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has finally been given a long-awaited - and desperately needed - shot in the arm, courtesy of Nintendo's 2.0 update which, somewhat unexpectedly, arrived earlier today. We already knew it was going to be a big one, of course, but we now have a much clearer idea of just how big it actually is, with data miners having successfully unearthed and catalogued a whopping 9,000+ new items as part of the update.

Granted, a fair few of those items - as datamined by NWPlayer123, Trundler, and VillagerDB, and shared by AnimalCrossingWorld - are colour variations, but even taking those into account, it's still a mammoth set of additions, covering clothing items, furniture, a multitude of different light fixtures, cooking apparatus, and more.

Call of Duty: Vanguard - Single-Player Campaign Review

2 years 6 months ago

Call of Duty: Vanguard’s campaign starts off on the right track – literally. An explosive train sequence through a burning Hamburg, Germany thrills as you jump between carriages, fending off dozens of angry Nazis on your way to a submarine base. It’s a cinematic opening to a game that wears its film influences proudly; whether that be the tense behind-enemy-lines aspects of D-Day in The Longest Day or the vivid depictions of the Pacific in Terence Malick’s The Thin Red Line. No shadow hangs heavier over this latest Call of Duty World War II story, however, than Inglourious Basterds. Its tale of a small group of expert soldiers on a secret mission to stop the Third Reich may sound familiar to anyone who has seen the 2009 movie, but Vanguard plays it with a much straighter face than Tarantino ever could. Even so, Vanguard’s campaign is over quickly, and its small series of battles are all too rarely memorable high points.

Marc Bernardin Confirmed as Writer for Amy Hennig’s Marvel Game at Skydance

2 years 6 months ago

As Marvel continues to dominate the big screens, the videogame arm has not been doing half bad either. With Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy being a hit, there is definitely more interest in what the pop culture giant is doing next for the interactive medium. We got the answer last week with the announcement of a new Marvel game being developed by Skydance New Media with Amy Hennig at the helm, and now Marc Bernardin has confirmed his role as a writer on the game.

This reveal came via the latest FatMan Beyond podcast hosted by Kevin Smith, with Bernardin stating that he is working on the upcoming Marvel title. The Star Trek: Picard producer has written comics for both DC and Marvel, as well as Image Comics, so this will not be something foreign to him even if this is the first time Bernardin is working on a video game.

However, if you were hoping for more details about what characters or story the project will revolve around, Bernardin was not sharing any more details on that. Host Kevin Smith did allude to a correct answer of sorts in the live chat, with Ant-Man or the Fantastic Four being possible answers.

For now, we just have to be contented that something new from Marvel is incoming from Amy Hennig and Skydance, with the help of Marc Bernardin.

Square Enix Announces Financial Results: Final Fantasy XIV Triumphs & Mobile Games Show “Lackluster Performance”

2 years 6 months ago

Today Square Enix announced its financial results for the first six months of the fiscal year, from April to September 2021.

In the table below you can check out the result for the whole company, showing 2.2% decline in sales and 7.9% decline in operating profit.

The overall results of Square Enix mirror those of the Digital Entertainment segment. Sales were ¥129,451 million, down 9.1% year-on-year, while operating profit was ¥29,499 million, down 12.8% year-on-year.

In the HD games subsegment releases including Outriders, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…, NEO: The World Ends with You, and Life is Strange: True Colors did not manage to achieve the same level of sales as last year’s comparable period, which included the launch of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Marvel’s Avengers.

Games for smartphone and PC browsers also declined in sales partly due to “lackluster performances by existing titles” using Square Enix’s own words.
