Only True Metroid Fans Can Ace this Trivia Quiz

2 years 9 months ago

The Metroid franchise is now officially 35 years old, as the very first game was released on the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1986. Since then, the series has grown with multiple main series games, spin-offs, and appearances in other media.

For 35 years, we played as Samus Aran the bounty hunter as she traveled across hostile alien planets to protect the galaxy from the Space Pirates that want to harness the power of the Metroids. The Metroid games mix platforming elements with exploration, and they usually place players in isolated experiences.

While the original game started the series as a 2D side-scroller, the franchise has taken steps into the first-person perspective with the Prime games. Even though Metroid hasn’t always been a top seller, the game has retained a dedicated fanbase, and Samus, along with other characters, have appeared in Super Smash Bros. and other games.

Not many games can say they’ve inspired an entire genre; Metroid is responsible for defining the Metroidvania genre of games that feature nonlinear, explorable worlds.

As we celebrate Metroid’s 35th anniversary and look forward to upcoming games in the series, we want to see just how much you know about the franchise. Only true Metroid fans will be able to ace this trivia quiz about the series. Think you know everything there is to know? Take this quiz to find out.

Mario Golf: Super Rush’s New Donk City Update Is a Hole in One

2 years 9 months ago

Yesterday, Nintendo released the first substantial update for Mario Golf: Super Rush. In this brand-new Super Rush update is a new course, a new playable character, a new mode, and several improvements to make for a more enjoyable experience out on the Mushroom Kingdom links.

Most notably is the arrival of an all-new course, New Donk City from Super Mario Odyssey fame. It looks like the map was lifted directly from Odyssey, looking oh-so-familiar in all the best ways. This particular 18-hole course is a special one because like Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour’s Congo Canopy and Mario Golf: World Tour’s Sky Island, New Donk City is entirely comprised of Par 3 holes.

Mario Golf: Super Rush New Donk City

Essentially, New Donk City is 36 all-new holes, because there is an amateur tee and a pro tee choice players can choose at the start of their rounds. Both feature different tee and green locations.

This Attack on Titan Beast Titan Transformation Animation Is Breathtaking

2 years 9 months ago

In the four seasons, it’s been an anime, Attack on Titan has proved itself to be one of the most impressive shows ever made, featuring amazing fight scenes and insanely detailed storylines. Unfortunately, the live-action adaptations haven’t hit the same mark, as it just seems to be a difficult transition to make things work with CGI compared to animation.

One animator is proving that it isn’t impossible for Attack on Titan to look sick using live-action, which you can see down below.

In the post to the official Attack on Titan Subreddit, Redditor Againnagainforever showed off an animation that was created by Masashi Imagawa. In the short clip, we get a shot of the Beast Titan transforming, the Walls of Paradis, and even some Survey Corp members using their vertical maneuvering equipment to get to the scene faster.

Here's what everyone who got their hands on the Steam Deck had to say

2 years 9 months ago

Less than a month after its initial announcement, Valve have invited a group of techies out to put their mitts on the upcoming Steam Deck handheld. Valve handed them over to several different sites to take for a spin with a selection of games including Control, Doom Eternal, Hades, and others. Not your RPS crew, alas, unless I massively missed a memo about Katharine being in Seattle.

In liu of us getting our own hands on the thing, here's what everyone who got to did had to say about it. The long and short is pretty positive: comfortable controls despite the large size and good performance even if the battery life may trend towards the low end of Valve's targets.

After more than a decade, development of Kerbal Space Program has come to an end

2 years 9 months ago

Kerbal Space Program studio Squad has finally brought development of its acclaimed space flight sim to a close, over a decade after the game's first public release.

Kerbal Space Program - which initially launched into early access via Squad's website in 2011 - gives players the opportunity to build and pilot their own fully-functional spaceships, rockets, and vehicles (while managing all aspects their alien race's quest for the stars if they choose), using actual proper science-y systems, from realistic aerodynamic to orbital physics.

Since leaving early access back in 2015, Kerbal Space Program has remained in active development, receiving numerous updates and expansions along the way - there's even a free "next-gen" update for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S due this autumn. However, Squad has now confirmed - after warning players the space flight sim's 1.12 update would be its last major release back in June - that its decade-plus-long journey is officially at an end.

Niantic Responds To Backlash After Reversing Pandemic-induced Changes To Pokémon Go

2 years 9 months ago

Pokémon Go

After a sudden rollback to the pandemic-induced extended ranges for Gyms and PokéStops in Pokémon Go, Niantic faced heavy pushback from fans. You can catch up on the specifics of the changes and initial backlash in Andrew Reiner’s reporting here. On Thursday morning, Pokémon-focused site PokéJungle joined the chorus with an open letter to the Pokémon Go developer demanding the COVID-era changes stay. Last night, Niantic made an official response to PokéJungle’s letter and those angry over the change, assuring fans it’s looking to find a way to move forward.

In its message to the Pokémon Go community, Niantic acknowledges the grief of the player base, saying, “We appreciate your letter and all of your feedback. We hear you. We are humbled by your response. Not every game has such a passionate, global player base that we’re fortunate enough to have.” The letter addresses the developer's steps to bring exploration back to the game in places where social distancing guidelines have been lessened. While the current wave of the COVID-19 Delta variant isn’t mentioned, Niantic does say, “we will continue to monitor health and safety guidance related to outdoor activities, and will make future changes if necessary.”

Ghost of Tsushima’s Iki Island Expansion Better Leave A Certain Character Alone This Time

2 years 9 months ago

Besides the original game, enhanced features, and new multiplayer content, the director’s cut of Ghost of Tsushima will also include the Iki Island expansion. I’m jazzed to have a reason to jump back into the world again. A new island to explore and fresh storylines? Sign me up.

But here’s the thing. I’m still not over the game’s saddest moment. For anyone who hasn’t played Ghost of Tsushima yet – you really should, but I get it if you are waiting for the upcoming release – this is the time to bookmark this story for later and walk away because I’m jumping into massive spoilers.

The biggo demo festivals that Steam started running last year are now going to be a recurring part of our reality. The Ascent Patch Brings Ray Tracing To Windows Players

2 years 9 months ago

The Ascent is a solid experience that, unfortunately, wasn’t created equal across all platforms. The cyberpunk co-op shooter is available on Steam as well as Xbox platforms, including Game Pass for console and PC. However, players quickly discovered that features present in the Steam version, such as ray tracing and DLSS, were missing from the Game Pass version. The experience has also suffered from numerous bugs. Players are justifiably miffed about the whole thing, and developer Neon Giant has taken the first step in righting the ship by releasing a patch aimed at correcting a number of issues.

The new patch is now live for Steam players and will be coming to Windows 10 and Xbox “shortly”, according to Neon Giant’s patch notes. You can read the full list of fixes here, but some big improvements include:

Lost designs: how Y2K aesthetics shaped so much of our world

2 years 9 months ago

Every now and then, I take out the glossy, red Samsung point-and-shoot I have living in the top drawer in my bedroom. I knew it'd end up being the last of its kind I'd end up buying, and it remains one of the few items I have from an era when designers were bold in ways we perhaps don't experience anymore.

As someone born in the 90s, you can then imagine the elation I felt when I stumbled across a Twitter account dedicated to the forgotten Y2K styles, attitude and fashion of the 90s and early 00s. Evan Collins and Froyo Tam, two designers based on the American west coast, are cataloguing these for all to see, with images extracted from books, magazines, mass-produced CDs and product exhibitions, creating a formal taxonomy all designers can use. I had to get in touch. During one moment in our group Skype call with them, I casually mention how even the graphical work and typography of old computer component packaging was so much more flamboyant than it is now.

"Yeah, we definitely explore these types of collateral. It's very much about what people purchase, but it doesn't mean it's highbrow," says Tam, who has also produced events focussing on digital photography. Collins talks about these ubiquitous designs too. "Because it wasn't highbrow, it just wasn't tracked as well. They're not gonna publish as many books on it, like how the high art world is pretty well documented." He goes to the heart of the issue of preservation, saying, "That disposability led it to get a little bit lost, and that's where finding these old books is interesting."

What are we all playing this weekend?

2 years 9 months ago

Today it is finally the weekend and I'm going to have a waffle and ice cream for my dinner, and none of you can stop me! That's the true power of being an adult, and neatly demonstrates why the idiom that childhood is "the best years of your life" is a lie. I was never allowed to have waffle and ice cream for dinner as a kid. And after dinner comes delicious video games! Here's what we're playing this weekend.
