Build better worlds in Imagine Earth

2 years 9 months ago

Managing the climate is usually an afterthought in colony building games, if it's included at all. It tends to be a non-issue until the game’s basically over, and its effects are usually underwhelming.

Imagine Earth isn't entirely about the environment. And it needn’t be, given that you're working for a business colonising one of countless worlds. Who cares if you destroy a planet when you can easily skip over to another one? You can do that. You can be pretty rapacious. But I find it more fun to be the oceanic aliens, because they start out with lots of seabase technology, so when your rivals accidentally melt the ice caps you can mostly just laugh at them.

If you want to try out this incredibly precise weapon, we’re here to help with our guide to the best RPD loadout in Warzone.

Fortnite disables bugged hug emote which players say put them in a NSFW position

2 years 9 months ago

Fortnite has quietly pulled its new Bear Hug emote after a bug was discovered which left players crouched in a NSFW position.

The friendly Bear Hug emote went on sale last night, priced 200 V-Bucks, ahead of this weekend's huge Ariana Grande concert series. It's a synced emote, which means other players can interact with someone performing it.

But players quickly found the emote was a bit too friendly. Epic Games has now removed the emote from sale.

Cyberpunk 2077: the state of play for PS5 and Xbox Series consoles

2 years 9 months ago

The recent release of Cyberpunk 2077's 1.23 update saw genuine improvements on PlayStation 4 consoles - enough for Sony to reinstate the game to the PlayStation Store. I covered its successes in depth a while back, but in the process, also took the time to study every other console version on this update. The blunt truth? Patch 1.23 doesn't significantly turn around the fortunes for base Xbox One or Xbox One X's frame-rate. With the next-gen machines though, there is a bit more of a story. Based on CD Projekt Red's new roadmap, this update promises to be the last major revision before an actual 'next-gen' version of Cyberpunk arrives. The simple question remains: what's the state of the game right now on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles?

Before focusing on the state of play for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 - which are essentially last-gen codebases running with strategic enhancements on the latest consoles - it's worth discussing Xbox Series S, which continues to deliver a good experience for a machine at its price-point. It's true, there is no 60fps mode and while 1440p is the maximum resolution target, it spends more of the time at a native 1080p instead. Of all the console releases though, this delivers one of the tighter locks at 30fps and retains stability even in our alley shoot-out stress test - traditionally a problem for the last-gen machines. It may not be perfect, but in terms of overall stability it boasts a better lock to 30fps than the Series X equivalent quality mode, and it retains its bigger brother's higher NPC count. With patch 1.23, Series S is in great shape.

2 years 9 months ago

Earlier this week, Marvel’s Avengers shared a dope new animated short, titled Road to Wakanda: Children of T'Chaka, that shed light on T’Challa and Shuri’s childhood. It got me even more hyped for War For Wakanda, the upcoming expansion for Marvel's Avengers.

The short, illustrated by comic icon Alitha Martinez (Batgirl and World Of Wakanda), is told from the perspective of Wakandan general Okoye, and hints at some potential plot points for the expansion.

Rust now has submarines, sharks, and underwater dungeons

2 years 9 months ago

Every major update to Rust has me questioning whether or not I actually know what kind of game Rust is. It's the survival one, yeah? The one where you start out naked and bash other folks with rocks, right? Perhaps it is, but now it's also the one where you can buy a functional submarine, slay sharks, and visit underwater lairs. If that's too adventurous, you could just hunt smaller prey with a fishing rod too. Rust's underwater update Going Deep has now launched and there's all sorts of other maritime playtime to tackle.

Haven Park really is A Short Hike meets Animal Crossing, and it's cute, cosy fun

2 years 9 months ago

As someone who both adores Adam Robinson-Yu's wholesome adventure game A Short Hike and has spent many hundreds of hours playing Animal Crossing over the years, Fabien Weibel's new camping indie game Haven Park seems like the perfect cross-section of my personal gaming tastes. It's set on a colourful island paradise-cum-outdoors adventure park, much like A Short Hike, and your task is to make this place a nice, cosy hangout for prospective campers, building and crafting new facilities to fulfil their needs, which is very much in the same vein as Nintendo's animal life sim. And having played a bit of the game so far, I am happy to report that this really is the perfect cross-section of my personal gaming tastes, and I will likely be losing the entire weekend to it as I continue my little adventure.

The LG 27GN800, one of my personal top monitor recommendations right now, is down to $300 in the US and £279 in the UK. These are great prices for a 27-in monitor with a Fast IPS panel, 1440p resolution and 144Hz refresh rate.

Like the 27GL850 before it, this monitor combines the motion handling of a TN screen with the colours and viewing angles of IPS, making it a great all-rounder for work and games of all kinds. It also supports FreeSync and G-Sync, so you can use variable refresh rates on all kinds of PCs and Xboxen.

Halo Infinite Crashes Ryan Reynold's Movie Premiere For Free Guy With Lifesize Warthog

2 years 9 months ago

Free Guy is the latest movie to star Ryan Reynolds and it centers around video game Easter eggs, but some of those gaming nods made an appearance in real life. With the film out now, the cast and crew celebrated with fans during a premiere event. With Halo Infinite hype still high after that first flight test, the appearance of a 1:1 scale of a Warthog from the Halo franchise was more than perfect.

Several images can be seen in a post by the official Halo account, including Reynolds himself posing in front of the Halo-given vehicle. While it's nothing new, 343 has hosted events in the past specifically dedicated to Halo that features the same ride, but seeing it on a red carpet just hits different:

Rust gets sharks, subs and spearguns in August update

2 years 9 months ago

This month's Rust update truly is a whopper, introducing a refreshed underwater biome with procedural underwater lab dungeons, submarines, torpedoes, sharks and more.

The update, which launched yesterday, introduces procedurally-generated underwater labs to the world of Rust, which will come in a variety of shapes and sizes - but always with two entry points. They can be entered via a "moonpool" using a submarine (another new item that we'll get to later). The labs also have CCTV to help you plan your route, along with microphones that let you "broadcast your commands into the entire base's network".

Some labs even come with mess hall rooms that allow you to play high-stakes poker, or barbecue meat while listening to music with your pals. That all sounds relaxing, but there are also plenty of nefarious NPCs on board that want to spoil your day - best stay on your toes. You'll find some tasty loot if you make it past these puzzles and enemies, so perhaps the reward is worth the risk.

The Medium’s PS5 DualSense Features Detailed in New Trailer

2 years 9 months ago

Blooper Team is readying itself to launch its acclaimed psychological horror The Medium on PlayStation 5, and those intent on playing the game can look forward to a bunch of DualSense features highlighted in a new trailer today.

Narrator Michał Napora explains how Blooper Team is “spicing up the game with some DualSense features.” This includes the use of the controller’s adaptive triggers to increase and decrease the resistance encountered when attempting to charge and use Spirit Blasts. Also, haptic feedback heightens immersion by offering different sensations according to what’s going on around Marriane as she navigates the game’s mysterious locale, an abandoned communist-era vacation resort in the Polish wilderness. It also indicates how much breath Marianne has left when evading The Maw.

Szymon Erdmański, producer at Bloober Team, also weighed in with a statement on today’s trailer:

“On PlayStation 5, we are taking full advantage of the console’s DualSense controller to immerse you even deeper into the mystery of the Niwa Hotel. Our goal is to let you feel Marianne’s reactions to what is happening as she explores and interacts with the game world.”

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires For PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PS4, & PC Shows First Gameplay in New Video

2 years 9 months ago

Koei Tecmo released an extensive gameplay video of Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires.

The game was presented on the show floor at Chinajoy in Shanghai last weekend, and today you get to take a look at the demo in action.

You can enjoy it below, and see how it changed from the original (and rather controversial) release.

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is coming for PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC via Steam in 2021. Here’s how Koei Tecmo describes the game.

“Combining the 1 vs. 1,000 action of DYNASTY WARRIORS with the addition of strategic elements, including unit command, DYNASTY WARRIORS 9 Empires sets players on a quest to conquer ancient China by both sword and strategy. Powerful Siege Battles enable commanders to deploy units to capture strategic points on the map like castles. Experiencing high-stakes fights at every turn, players can now take control of these central points on the battlefield through the use of fire attacks or other stratagem, siege weapons, and, at times, simply by force as commanders execute their strategies and attack enemy troops by issuing vital commands to units throughout the skirmish.

First Look At The Last Of Us TV Show With New Set Photos From Calgary

2 years 9 months ago

The Last of Us TV show for HBO has its mainstay cast ready to rock and roll, and it looks like the world-building aspect of the adaptation is coming along nicely. New set photos show the series in action, and it paints a war-torn picture of Calgary in a world that has been made into a wasteland due to a pandemic that changed everything.

The new on-set photos come by way of the @TheLastofUsNews Twitter page, showing off a few images of the transformation Calgary has undergone to bring the story of Joel and Ellie to life once more:

Some pointed out that the setup of the above photos means a Certain Scene has already been filmed, a sequence that begins at the start of the first game and lays the groundwork for Joel's development. We already knew that by a previous image that showed Pedro Pascal, who is playing the lead character Joel, in a car with his daughter and brother. For those that played the games, we know what happens next.
