E3 2021 has confirmed even more companies that will be attending this year's digital showcase, including names like Square Enix, Sega, and more. The virtual event is set to take place next month, offering new looks, fresh reveals, and a celebration of the gaming community.

Even though E3 2021 will be digital this year due to lingering COVID-19 concerns, that doesn't mean that there won't be a few surprises to be had. ESA has confirmed even more companies that are joining the E3 lineup this year, including the following companies:

  • Square Enix
  • Bandai Namco Entertainment
  • Gearbox Entertainment
  • Verizon, Freedom Games
  • Devious Eye Entertainment
  • Turtle Beach
  • Verizon
  • Binge
  • XSEED Games

Already confirmed companies include Nintendo, Xbox, Take-Two Entertainment, Ubisoft, Capcom, and Warner Bros. Games. Sony and Electronic Arts are once more sitting E3 out, opting in to their own showcases instead. Konami has also confirmed it won't be in attendance despite having several "notable" projects in the works.

Jade Raymond's Haven Studios gains more former Stadia staff

Back in March, Assassin's Creed co-creator Jade Raymond started up Haven Studios, an independent Canadian developer with plans to make a new PlayStation game. She had previously been the head of Stadia Games and Entertainment, but left after Google started shutting down its development studios earlier this year. Now it seems Raymond has tempted some other Google alums over for her new project, who also all happen to be former Ubisoft developers too.

I'm a sucker for a good menu noise

After I lived and breathed NieR Replicant for review, I looked back on my play time with a mixture of fondness and pain. The payoff of the fifth and final ending was worth the effort, but good lord was it a test of resolve. It was brilliance nestled in multiple layers of gift wrap, and I was happy to call it a day once I'd seen the final (x5) credits.

But one thing I haven't stopped thinking about is the menu sounds. NieR Replicant has excellent noises for its start menu and inventory management, both of which aided that sense of being transported to another world of monsters and emotion.

Eve Online will never die, says head of studio after 18 years

Whoever said "nothing is certain but death and taxes" never played Eve Online. The space-faring MMORPG has no central government to shake you down for road money, and space pilots are cloned anew after every ignoble death. After 18 years and countless updates, Eve is one of the longest-running MMOs in the industry. It predates World of Warcraft by over a year. It is older than Facebook. Alongside long-toothed MMOs like Runescape, it has survived where others have fallen. But surely even this infamous generator of sci-fi skulduggery must pay the final toll some time. Well, not according to Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of the game's developer, CCP.

"It's never going to die," he says.

Even Super Mario 64 has ray tracing now

The PC’s never-ending march to add ray tracing to everything has now made it onto other platforms. Super Mario 64 RT (or 'SMT64RT' if you're pressed for time) is the latest, albeit unofficial version of the Nintendo 64 classic for PC, grafting a lighting system onto the 24-year-old console game. Digital Foundry took a look at the mod and cried fully dynamic and simulated tears of joy.

Upcoming gothic fantasy roguelike Rogue Lords makes you play as a cheating devil

Rogue Lords is an upcoming gothic fantasy roguelike being developed by Cyanide Studio (the creators of Blood Bowl and Styx) and Leikir, and it's set to release this year. It caught my eye when it was first announced amidst the notE3 celebrations last year, mostly due to the eerie aesthetic and cool concept art shown during publisher Nacon's announce-a-thon stream. But today, the devs released a new gameplay trailer that's piqued my interest once more, because it shows that players can kind of cheat to win runs.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX Aims to Recapture the Platforming Magic of 1986

If you’ve played the remastered Halo games in recent years, then you know the joy of being able to instantaneously swap between the original creation and the modern recreation with the push of a button. But where Halo 1 and 2 Anniversary were given this treatment only a decade later, the developers at Merge Games aim to do the same with Alex Kidd in Miracle World: a game that’s a whopping 35 years old. So far the result is a stunning overhaul that’s beautiful and modern, yet still immediately recognizable. As I toggled back and forth between old and new, I was continuously blown away by the night-and-day difference in everything from the once-pixelated levels, now made into beautiful, detailed landscapes, to the bizarre bosses that have been transformed into cartoonish masters of roshambo. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=alex-kidd-in-miracle-world-dx-screenshots&captions=true"] What was once a barren blue background with a few clouds here and there now has mountains, trees, a colorful sky, and even a sun that casts light and shadow over the level. An enemy that was once a very plain-looking frog has been transformed into a bug-eyed, cross-eyed leaping weirdo. And yet each area and every enemy is unmistakably the Miracle World I remember playing on my grandfather’s Master System. During my playthrough, I stopped as often as possible to switch between the old and new versions to appreciate the differences and marvel at how far we’ve come in 35 years. The most jarring difference, though, wasn’t in what I saw but what I heard. Miracle World’s audio overhaul is staggering, and the beeps and boops of the original retro soundtrack have been completely recreated with instrumentals or just reimagined altogether. The soundtrack has quite a few bangers that had me humming as I jumped, punched, and helicoptered my way through each stage.

First Tribeca Games Official Selection Line-up Revealed

The 2021 Tribeca Festival has announced the Tribeca Games Official Selection; a line-up of eight games joining the festival. This will be the first time multiple video games will be up for consideration for an award at Tribeca in a film festival format. The official 2021 Tribeca Festival games selection, competing for the inaugural Tribeca Games Award, are:
  • Harold Halibut (Slow Bros.)
  • Kena: Bridge of Spirits (Ember Lab)
  • Lost in Random (Zoink Games / Electronic Arts)
  • NORCO (Geography of Robots / Raw Fury)
  • Sable (Shedworks / Raw Fury)
  • Signalis (rose-engine / Humble Games)
  • The Big Con (Mighty Yell)
  • Twelve Minutes (Luis Antonio / Annapurna Interactive)
The Tribeca Games Award “honors an unreleased game for its potential for excellence in art and storytelling through design, artistic mastery and highly immersive worlds.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/06/harold-halibut-story-trailer"] While this is a “first-of-its-kind” opportunity for multiple games, Tribeca has been featuring games as part of the festival for ten years. In 2011, L.A. Noire became the first video game ever to be honored as an Official Selection at Tribeca. In celebration of Rockstar starting Tribeca’s interest in games, a live outdoor performance from Red Dead Redemption 2 Original Soundtrack producer, Daniel Lanois, and his band will be held at the 2021 festival. While the Red Dead Redemption 2 concert will be an in-person event, those interested can get involved from home with the Tribeca At Home virtual offerings, which will provide hands-on digital demos. Sessions can be reserved from May 24 at the Tribeca website.

Sony Facing Lawsuit Over PlayStation Store Digital Sales Exclusivity

Sony is facing a lawsuit that claims it is operating an unlawful monopoly by restricting purchases of PlayStation games to the PlayStation Store. As detailed by a Bloomberg report, the class-action lawsuit, filed by consumers, notes that by restricting digital purchases to the official PlayStation Store, Sony Interactive Entertainment are able to charge up to 175% higher than physical games sold by retailers both online and in-store. With modern games like Returnal commanding $70, you can see why people are trying to find the best deals on their games. Those who want to remain digital, however, are restricted to what Sony charges on the PlayStation Store. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/29/returnal-review"] “Sony’s monopoly allows it to charge supracompetitive prices for digital PlayStation games, which are significantly higher than their physical counterparts sold in a competitive retail market, and significantly higher than they would be in a competitive retail market for digital games,” explains the lawsuit. Sony stopped allowing third party retailers, such as Amazon, from selling digital download codes for PlayStation games back in 2019. Nintendo has also done a similar thing, suspending European retailers from selling first-party digital game codes. While Sony brought an end to digital download codes being sold by other retailers, those companies are allowed to sell PSN credit. However, this still requires a user to pay Sony’s asking price for a game, rather than being able to pay the often cheaper prices retailers offer for disc-based versions of the same game. While Sony may be facing legal action, it’s not the big case of the moment.

Yasuke Is A Full-Circle Moment For Black Anime Fans

Watching the first episode of Yasuke, Netflix’s new fantastical animated show about the life of a Black samurai, I started to cry. I remembered how it felt to be a 16-year-old girl watching anime in the nighttime darkness of my living room. Watching Yasuke, with its titular Black character kicking ass to a soundtrack…

Humble Bundle scraps plan to remove dividend sliders from website

Humble Bundle has announced that it will abandon its plan to replace the storefront's dividend sliders with static, capped options. The Humble Bundle store will continue to allow its customers to decide what portion of their purchases are donated to the store's many charities.

The controversial plans were announced in April, and would have seen the current Humble Bundle system — which lets the customer plot the distribution of each sale between charity, publisher, and Humble Bundle itself — replaced with two flat-rate choices: "Default Donation" (5% to charity) and "Extra to Charity" (15% to charity). These options would see more money distributed to publishers, with an aim to encouraging more companies to volunteer titles for inclusion in future bundles. The community was disappointed with the change, however, and thus the original system will be retained.

"We’ve heard everyone loud and clear and apologize for the way these changes were rolled out," said Humble Bundle in a new statement. "We are now taking a moment to pause, collect constructive feedback and be more transparent about the path forward. Today, we’ll be turning sliders back on for all customers on our bundle pages while we take more time to review feedback and consider sliders and the importance of customization for purchases on bundle pages in the long term."

Nintendo reminds us of what's on the horizon for the Switch, with more likely to come at E3

In case you missed it, Nintendo posted their financial results this morning for the fiscal year ending in March 2021, and there's a lot to parse. Go ahead, read it! Back? OK we'll head into what's to come now that you're done catching up on what has been.

Although it wasn't mind-blowingly revelatory, Nintendo gave us some insight into what this summer might look like before we get potentially more surprise-summer releases, and deal with the fervor of E3. Pokemon Snap just launched of course, but on May 21 we're heading into Miitopia territory.

Following that, we're getting Game Builder Garage on June 11, which was just announced (good timing!). Then on June 25 Nintendo is pushing out Mario Gold Super Rush, which we'll probably hear more about at E3. From a hardware perspective, the Nintendo Switch Lite is coming out with a new color (blue) on May 21.

In non-Switch news, Nintendo reminds us that Super Nintendo World technically had a grand opening on March 18 (which has hit some snags), and they also have a Pikmin app coming. We'll get more soon enough, but this is what their schedule looks like for now as a lot of big-time projects have been pushed back.

Ubisoft has announced Tom Clancy's The Division: Heartland, a standalone free-to-play game due for PC, PlayStation and Xbox sometime vaguely in "2021-22".

It's being developed by Ghost Recon studio Red Storm Entertainment, and you can already register your interest in joining playtests.

Another The Division game is also in development for mobile, Ubisoft said, while its previously-announced The Division film starring Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal, in development with Netflix, is also still on the cards. Finally, a The Division novel is on the way, with a story set post-The Division 2.

Resident Evil Village tech review: Capcom transitions beautifully to next-gen

Resident Evil Village has arrived and while the various demos over the last few weeks gave us a chance to sample the technology, we've now played through the entire game and have had a chance to fully process it. As a sequel to Resident Evil 7, this game retains the first-person perspective but with some key improvements. It's also a remarkable showcase for the excellent RE Engine, with image quality, performance and ray tracing enhancements for the next generation of consoles combined with a dramatic boost in scale and scene complexity across the board.

This is what stands out the most to my eye - every scene feels carefully pieced together in a beautiful marriage of art and technology. Yes, the RE Engine powers the game but it's the art team within Capcom that really steals the show. All areas are carefully crafted with an eye towards overall scene composition above all else. In exterior scenes, the distant background lends the world a sense of scale, mid-field objects are placed in a way to connect the background to the foreground and that foreground is packed with fine detail.

Pokémon Master Journeys: The Series Debuts This Summer

Ash has come a long way. After the hopeful trainer spent a fateful morning in bed instead of receiving his first Pokémon from Professor Oak, he was paired up with a stubborn Pikachu and the rest is history. In the 23 seasons since, Ash has traveled across the land, battled the biggest and baddest Pokémon out there, vanquished Team Rocket more times than we can count, and even won the Alola League a couple years ago. There was little left to do for the iconic trainer and his partner Pokémon, so when the series jumped to Netflix via a 2020 deal, they started from scratch. Pokémon Journeys retold the origin stories of Ash and Pikachu, while injecting new characters like Goh. Now, that story is set to continue later this month with Pokémon Master Journeys: The Series.

Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition is out now as a free upgrade on PC

I've found that the dingy post-apocalyptic world of Metro Exodus always looked quite good, but today developers 4A Games made those visuals even better. They've released the Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition, expanding the FPS's ray tracing capabilities, increasing framerates and display resolutions, among other technical upgrades. You can download the Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition right now if you'd like, but be warned: it requires a ray tracing-capable GPU at the very minimum.
