Here's What Xbox Thought of The Last of Us Part 2

2 years 11 months ago
The latest internal documents revealed in the Epic vs Apple court case appear to be from Xbox, including an internal analysis Xbox conducted of The Last of Us Part 2, one of the biggest video game releases from its console rival, PlayStation. This analysis reads like a review and is the closest you'll get to see what Xbox thinks of PlayStation's major release. Companies often gather extensive data on their products, the video game industry is no different. While companies sometimes hold mock reviews of their own games, Xbox's documents show that it also analyzes rival games as well. So what did Xbox think of The Last of Us 2? For the most part, their analysis was overwhelmingly positive. Spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2 below [poilib element="accentDivider"] [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-naughty-dog-game-review&captions=true"] "The last of Us Part 2 is the exceedingly rare video game where what it accomplishes in moving forward the art of narrative storytelling in video games as a medium ultimately outweighs whether or not everyone 'likes' it or even if everyone has 'fun' playing it," Xbox writes in an internal analysis acquired by IGN from the Epic vs.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 gets June release date on Switch

2 years 11 months ago

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, last year's well-received remaster of the skateboarding classics, will finally be making its way to Switch on 25th June.

Something of a bittersweet last hoorah for Skylanders studio Vicarious Visions - who were merged into Blizzard earlier this year - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 brings together characters and levels, all suitably spruced up for the modern era, from the first two Tony Hawk's games.

Eurogamer's Martin Robinson loved Vicarious Visions' masterful reworking of the beloved classics when Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 launched on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 in 2020, and Digital Foundry's John Linneman even called it "one of the best games of the generation".

Returnal has some handy debug cheat codes if you connect a keyboard

2 years 11 months ago

Returnal, as you won't need telling if you've been braving its trials this week, isn't an easy game. But it turns out a little bit of help (albeit not of the entirely above-board kind) has been left lingering within the game in the form of some newly discovered debug cheat codes - just don't expect them to stick around for very much longer.

As discovered by YouTuber TheRandomizer - and elaborated upon elsewhere - players can slightly ease their progress through Housemarque's tough-as-nails sci-fi shooter by attaching a USB keyboard to their PS5 and inputting a selection of commands, with varying results.

It's possible, for instance, to summon any weapon at your current weapon proficiency by pressing and holding shift, control and alt, and then hitting any number key between 1 and 0. Pressing and holding shift, control, and 4, meanwhile, instantly takes players back to their ship.

Tactical Breach Wizards summons another trailer and beta test

2 years 11 months ago

Turn-based spell slinging game Tactical Breach Wizards is summoning another beta test that you may be able to get yourself access to. Even if you don't, there's a nice chunk of updated tactical magic fights to see in the new trailer. I still rather enjoy the slapstick quality of wizards who, armed with all sorts of magical spells, will result to hurling baddies out of windows. It's looking neat as ever.

Make your own Mass Effect Legendary Edition cover with this sick box art creator

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition is fast approaching, and its box art is adorned with the many crewmates of the Normandy from throughout the trilogy.

But maybe you don't like how they're arranged? Maybe you're a little more Paragon or Renegade, or you'd rather spotlight the shady station of Omega or the pristine Presidium. Honestly, Kasumi deserves some box art respect too, right?

Well, you can make it all happen with a new creation tool that BioWare put out today. This handy-dandy site lets you pick your morality, location, and favorite crewmates to create your own personalized version of the Legendary Edition box art.

It even comes in multiple sizes, so you can share the image around easily between devices. Get a 4K wallpaper render, a square size for a social media icon or 9:16 for your phone background, and then of course, a full box art for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

The only trick is you have to, essentially, rank the crew of the Normandy. You pick out various characters for slots like "Favorite Squadmates" and "Trusted Companion," though some are unavailable for some of the spots on the lineup. Then, after somehow choosing favorites, it creates your own beautiful lineup, personalized to your favorite crew.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 comes to Nintendo Switch in June

The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 remasters are finally making their way to Nintendo Switch, so yes, you'll soon be able to ride switch on the Switch.

Activision announced today that last year's great remaster of the first two Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games is coming to Nintendo Switch on June 25. This will be the first Tony Hawk's Pro Skater to debut on the Switch,  and it's arriving with everything included: all original levels, skaters, and the sick tracks.

According to the Nintendo eShop page, the Switch version will also have Create-A-Park and Create-A-Skater, as well as online multiplayer and leaderboards. The GIF in the tweet above also shows the game in action, and it looks fairly smooth. Hopefully the transition to Nintendo Switch holds up well, because I don't think you'll need to twist my arm to get me to play some Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on the go.

Xbox Has Never Turned a Profit On Any Of Its Devices

2 years 11 months ago
Xbox vice president Lori Wright has been called to testify in the Epic vs. Apple court case as a third-party witness and give insight into the gaming market as a console partner. Her testimony has shed light on some of Xbox's internal workings including how Xbox has never made a profit off of hardware through any of the Xbox iterations. During an examination, Epic's lawyer Wes Earnhardt began a line of questioning on the profitability of console hardware. Earnhardt asks Wright, "How much margin does Microsoft earn on the sale on the Xbox consoles?" To which Wright responds, "We don't. We sell the consoles at a loss." "Just to be clear, does Microsoft ever earn a profit on the sale of an Xbox console?" Wright follows-up. "No," Wright says. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=confirmed-xbox-series-x-games&captions=true"] Wright explains that Microsoft keeps selling consoles at a loss because its business model is set up to deliver "an end-to-end gaming experience," and that hardware is "critical to us delivering that gaming experience." These experiences include services like games, Xbox Live Gold, and Xbox Game Pass. As noted by Protocol, Epic's questions regarding hardware profitability were in order to show that while video game console makers have a justification for its 30% revenue share as it is a primary revenue source for them, smartphone makers like Apple don't have as strong reasoning for their revenue share models. Video game hardware has always typically been sold at a loss, save for a couple of instances.

How D&D is Going Full 'Zombie Apocalypse' Mode in Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft

2 years 11 months ago
Zombies aren't exactly a new concept in Dungeons & Dragons — odds are if you've ever played D&D you've had a couple of zombies pop out of a coffin while delving into some long-buried tomb. They might not function exactly the same as you're used to seeing them in movies — for example, in the current rules as written Zombies don't even have a bite attack — but the classic undead monsters are about to shamble into the spotlight with the upcoming sourcebook, Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, in one of the biggest departures from the source material for the fan-favorite setting.

Sumo Digital Working on Major Game Based On a Well-Known and Beloved Fantasy Series

2 years 11 months ago
A narrative designer at Sumo Digital has revealed that she's working on one of the "world's best known and best-loved fantasy franchises." This news comes, oddly enough, by way of MCV/Develop's 2021 30 Under 30 list, which is comprised of 30 people considered "the best young talent in the industry." One of those 30 is Sarah Longthorne of Sumo Digital. She's a narrative designer at the developer's Nottingham studio, which is one of Sumo's eight UK studios, and her 30 Under 30 bio reveals that she's worked the past year as a narrative designer on a fantasy franchise, as pointed out by Luke_wal on Resetera.

Humble Bundle apologize and bring back charitable donation sliders

2 years 11 months ago

Late last month, Humble Bundle announced that they would be removing the sliders from their store that let customers choose how much of a purchase would go to charity. It effectively capped the possible charitable percentage to 15%, which was certainly an odd choice for a storefront whose main appeal is giving to charity. Customers and developers promptly expressed disapproval of that decision, so now Humble are rolling back that change and will be "exploring different approaches to the sliders and how splits work".

Destiny 2 players decipher binary code that leads to a new emblem

2 years 11 months ago

It looks like some secrets are drifting around for intrepid Destiny 2 detectives to discover. Some attentive players noticed that some clips going around actually held code that, when deciphered, led them to a special new emblem.

Detailed on the Destiny 2 secret and glitch-hunting subreddit r/raidsecrets, content creators had been posting clips on social media. Poster Emutwoo had discovered that there were bits of binary, and both the subreddit and Discord got to work breaking it down.

Eventually, they uncovered that by running the binary through an ASCII converter, you could get letters and numbers. And soon, a code was uncovered that could be redeemed for the emblem "Sequence Flourish."

The code to redeem on Bungie's site, if you want to skip right ahead, is 7D4-PKR-MD7. Users are theorizing there could be more, but at least for now, that's one free, neat emblem that came about thanks to the ingenuity and problem-solving of the community. Congrats to them!
