Thank god, Buildings Have Feelings Too! fixed its controls

2 years 11 months ago

Most humans will instantly grow attached to any inanimate object if you put a face on it (preferably a sad one, as if it needs your help). This is possibly so we won't immediately hoof any unattended baby into the oven, because using cold logic they are a helpless and easy source of food, but emotions tell us that they are cute and we don't want the baby to cry at the oven being all hot. Buildings Have Feelings Too!, a puzzle/city management game that's heavy on the puzzle, is the reason I will never again enjoy a video of Fred Dibnah explaining how to demolish a massive great industrial chimney, because now I know it had little arms and legs, and spoke with a voice like the sound of a heap of bricks shifting around.

It had hopes and dreams, that chimney. It wanted to be useful, it would have changed to a different kind of industry if you'd only given them the chance! Hell, it would have even moved to a different part of the city! But unfortunately doing any of those things in Buildings Have Feelings Too! is way more complicated than the simple process of turn oven on, put baby in oven, close oven door. Thankfully, a hotfix has updated the most annoying control issues so at least I no longer want to pull out my own fingernails while playing.

GTFO's Rebirth update adds ceiling monsters and brain injections

Tactical horror FPS GTFO had a big update yesterday, wiping away all its old levels once again, and introducing fresh ones with eerie new environments to explore. This time it seems nature has returned to the Complex (the big underground compound you're sent into), with plant life beginning to grow amongst the horrors. Unfortunately, that plant life seems to have contributed to the horrors too, because you'll now find "spawner sacks" hanging from the ceilings. I don't fancy meeting what comes out of them.

The top 10 games on PC in May

As soon as the world starts to open up, some noteworthy video games come out in an effort to keep you indoors. Such is life in 2021. But, before I get onto all the lovely games you can buy over the next four weeks, I'm going to recommend going outside before the seemingly inevitable Lockdown IV happens. I went to The Outside recently, and I have to say I came away very impressed. It has things like trees and cows and Fiat Puntos.

CD Projekt Bosses Set To Receive Big Bonuses Despite Cyberpunk 2077 Launch Problems

2 years 11 months ago
The CEOs and other board members at CD Projekt are set to receive big, multi-million dollar bonuses this year, despite the difficult and problem-filled launch of Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt co-CEOs, Marcin Iwiński and Adam Kiciński, are each set to get an end-of-year bonus of 24 million zloty (approx. $6.3 million), according to the company’s annual report. Meanwhile CD Projekt board member and director of Cyberpunk 2077, Adam Badowski, is to be awarded $4.2 million in bonuses. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/07/cyberpunk-2077-review"] As explained in a new Bloomberg report, these bonuses come via CD Projekt’s profit share system, in which 20% of the company’s annual earnings is split up and awarded to staff members. 10% of profit is shared among the board of directors, while the other 10% goes to employees. In a statement to Bloomberg, CD Projekt explained that 865 employees were part of this profit share system, with $29.8 million shared among them. Meanwhile, five board members will share $28 million. Talking to Bloomberg, some employees revealed that they were expected to receive between $5,000 and $9,000 in bonuses. More senior staff could get closer to $20,000. These do, naturally, pale in comparison to the multi-million dollar figures assigned to the board. These kinds of figures are to be expected from a corporation, but they are called into question in the wake of CD Projekt’s disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077. The game, in development for years and eagerly awaited by fans, launched in a buggy state that was considered near unplayable on PlayStation 4.

Hitman developer IO Interactive is reportedly working on a dragon-themed fantasy game, potentially as an Xbox exclusive. FIFA and Football Manager Join Anti-Abuse Social Media Boycott

2 years 11 months ago
The FIFA and Football Manager teams have joined a social media boycott being held across huge swathes of the footballing world in protest against racist abuse and other hate speech, and the lack of action being taken by platforms it's hosted on. From Friday, April 30 until Monday May 3, the entire English Football League will halt any posts on social media. The boycott is in protest against abuse, and social media companies' inaction on preventing that abuse. Both EA Sports and Sports Interactive have today joined the boycott. EA Sports wrote: "We stand strong with English football in the fight against racism, online hate, and any form of discrimination." Sports Interactive wrote, "Today, we join the EFL and English football in a united stand against online abuse. Social media companies must do more to #StopOnlineAbuse. Join us and switch off too, as we collectively demand change." The boycott follows repeated racist and discriminatory hate speech used towards football players, and the boycott aims to put pressure on social media platforms to do more to clamp down on abuse.

Konami nabs Napoli exclusive for PES from 2022/23 season

2 years 11 months ago

Konami is still fighting the good fight when it comes to football video game licences - it's just nabbed the exclusive on Italian club Napoli.

The marketing partnership starts from next season, but Napoli becomes a genuine PES exclusive from the 2022/23 season, Konami said.

It's a similar deal to the one Konami signed for Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus, which forced rival EA Sports to come up with a fake name for the Old Lady in FIFA 21. So, expect EA Sports to have to come up with a fake name for Napoli in 2022's FIFA 23.

Returnal: how a tech powerhouse puts PS5 through its paces

2 years 11 months ago

Housemarque has struck gold again with Returnal - an atmospheric, horror-infused shooter that has dominated my attention since I first loaded it. Think of it is as a 'bullet hell' shooter, merged with a Metroid-like design and roguelike mechanics. Combine this with a story and an aesthetic that merges HR Giger-like influences with Sci-Fi elements from Sphere, Solaris, Prometheus and many more, and you have an original, distinct and intense experience. It's also absolute Housemarque, delivered with the studio's signature technological excellence.

In a sense, we're looking at an evolution of the firm's prior works. Despite fully transitioning now to Unreal Engine 4, there's still the same focus on a super-busy scene driven by a multitude of GPU-accelerated article - and there are so many varieties that all dazzle. Even smaller actions in the game are significant from a technological perspective, to the point where even opening a door leaves fizzling dust in its wake. I absolutely adored the matter translocation effect, where your character dissolves into constituent pieces of matter, which are then shot as energy to the next location before reforming. In fact, particles don't need to particles - you can see fully formed 3D orbs. The game is packed with physicalised particle effects, to the point where the husk of an enemy carcass disperses to uncanny effect as you walk through it.

Destiny's Vault of Glass returns next month

Vault of Glass, Destiny's first ever raid and one of the best co-operative experiences in all of video games, will be brought to Destiny 2 on 22nd May.

In a new blog post, Bungie said its goal was not to "fundamentally evolve" the raid into something new - so expect to see familiar encounters, bosses and that same sneaky path through the Gorgon maze if you dip back in.

Unlike in the original Destiny, the rest of Venus, where Vault of Glass lies, will not be playable. So don't expect to sit outside VOG's front door waiting for randoms to turn up. Now, this will be a private space for your fireteam.

Streets of Rage 4 celebrates one year of skull-crackin' mayhem, Max Thunder coming in Mr. X Nightmare DLC

[Update: Sometimes it just goes this way. At the exact minute this article went live, Lizardcube announced that Streets of Rage 2's star wrestler Max Thunder will be joining the SoR 4 roster as part of the incoming Mr. X Nightmare DLC. Check out the new trailer below. Sorry 'bout my damn luck.]

Today is the first birthday of the fantastic brawler sequel Streets of Rage 4. Yep, that's 12 whole months of pavement-pounding, nose-breaking, croissant-eating chaos, as Axel, Blaze, Cherry, Floyd, and Adam take matters into their own hands, treading the mean streets of Oak Wood City to liberate the people from the evil machinations of The Y Siblings.

It was such a long wait, but it absolutely paid off. Co-developers Dotemu, Guard Crush Games, and Lizardcube delivered a gorgeous looking, great sounding, and slickly playing action title, packed with character, style and, most importantly, depth. A worthy successor to the Sega Mega Drive originals, and a fine way for any video game fan to kill a few hours, Streets of Rage 4 is a must-play, and is on track to get a whole lot better.

Destiny 2's Vault Of Glass raid opens May 22nd

2 years 11 months ago

The Destiny 1 raid Vault Of Glass will return in Destiny 2 on May 22nd, Bungie confirmed last night. And they have good news for people interested in trying the ultra-hard raid race Challenge Mode that's in effect for the first day: you won't need to grind a huge amount to reach its Power cap. In fact, you might not need to grind at all - you may already be past it. Given that hard Destiny is some of the best Destiny, I really do recommend giving that a go.

The real horror of Resident Evil 7 isn't the Baker family

I had very good intentions when I started playing Resident Evil 7 for the first time earlier this year. "Resident Evil Village doesn't come out for months," I said to myself. "It's a 10-hour game, that's plenty of time to get this finished." Reader, I have not finished Resident Evil 7. After finally beating old Mr Baker down in that claustrophobic basement with the swinging meat sacks, I put down my controller and walked away. It had been a particularly stressful evening of dying, chainsawing and more dying, and I needed a break. I had intended to go back, but recently when I've had a spare hour or two to decompress with a game, I've more often than not gravitated towards a quick round of lovely chill Dorfromantik than put myself through the remaining horrors of the Baker estate.

I did, however, finally go back to Resi 7 last night, and golly, as much as I hate the horrible rotting corpses of the Bakers three, I had forgotten about the sheer horror of Ethan Winters' mangled hand. Look away now if you don't want to lose your lunch.

Resident Evil Village Started Development 6 Months Before Resident Evil 7 Came Out

2 years 11 months ago
Capcom asked its developers to start work on Resident Evil Village six months before Resident Evil 7 was due for release – which left the team unsure about the direction they wanted to take, before the first-ever first-person Resident Evil game saw a positive reception. Revealed in our IGN First feature about the making of and inspirations behind Village, director Morimasa Sato explains: “We were still busy developing Resident Evil 7, but my boss told me to start planning for the next entry in the series. At the time, we had no idea how users would react towards the new horror experience and characters of 7 yet.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/resident-evil-village-the-mercenaries-mode-hands-on-ign-first"] It's not hugely unusual that a major series would see plans for a sequel put in place before the preceding game is released – but Resident Evil 7 was a major departure for the series, meaning Village's developers were left waiting to see the reaction to it before fully committing to a straight sequel, rather than another reinvention. “We had no idea how the change of perspective would be received, so at first we were quite worried. But when we released Resident Evil 7 about half a year after the development of Village started, it was received very well. This helped us decide to make Village a direct sequel,” Sato says. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/resident-evil-village-5-hour-ps5-hands-on-preview-ign-first"] That success meant Village moved forward as a first-person game and continued the story of RE7 protagonist Ethan Winters – but the team had already planned the addition of a village setting, inspired by Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil Village Could Have Skipped PS4 and Xbox One Altogether

2 years 11 months ago

Resident Evil Village could have skipped last-gen platforms entirely, with the developers waiting to make sure it ran well enough before committing to making a PS4 and Xbox one version.

Resident Evil Village is gorgeous on next-gen platforms and PC, but recent demos and IGN’s own hands-on time have indicated that the game also looks great and runs smoothly on last-gen platforms, the PS4 and Xbox One. However, according to producer Tsuyoshi Kanda, Capcom did not decide to release the game on last-gen platforms until after Village was announced in June last year.

“We developed Village as a game for next-gen hardware, but in order to make it accessible to more players, we went through a lot of trial and error to somehow provide a comparable experience on last-gen hardware,” Kanda told IGN. “In the end, we were able to deliver a high-quality product for last-gen hardware as well. That being said, if the quality hadn’t been sufficient, I don’t think we would have released it.”

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/resident-evil-village-first-ever-ps4-pro-gameplay-4k-ign-first"]

“If there was a big difference in graphical quality or framerate, it would not have been something we could deliver to players, so we did our best to make sure it would be satisfying on any platform,” added director Morimasa Sato.

Fans were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the PS4 Pro footage IGN exclusively revealed earlier this month, which was captured by us from a preview build of the full game. With the recent demos, players have been able to directly test a cut-down version of the game on their platform of preference.
