Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red reorganising to develop multiple AAA projects at same time

3 years 1 month ago

Cyberpunk 2077 maker CD Projekt Red will change how it operates to develop multiple AAA games and expansions in parallel, and only begin promoting its creations much closer to release.

The change in strategy - what CD Projekt calls its new "strategic development framework" - comes in response to the disappointing launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in December last year, and is detailed in a lengthy corporate update video released this afternoon.

"We want to improve the way we make games," company boss Adam Kiciński said. "We want to continuously improve the working environment for every team member. We want a sharper focus on how we work together to make great games." The word "crunch" is not mentioned within the video at any point, though there's mention of training for staff on matters of mental and physical health, and word of a group of employees from across the company which will liaise with CD Projekt's board.

Cel-shaded shooter XIII is free for 48 hours from GOG

3 years 1 month ago

You can now grab Ubisoft's first-person-shooter XIII for free as part of GOG's Spring Sale. That's the good XIII, by the way, not the recently released XIII Remake, which is so full of bugs you're best off avoiding it at all costs.

Originally released on the Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2003, XIII is a quality (and sometimes frustratingly difficult) espionage game that's loosely based on the Belgian graphic novels of the same name.

It brings the visuals of the graphic novels to life, filling the screen with comic-book-style panels when you whizz a throwing knife into someone's face and phonetic visuals for sound effects, whether that's the TAT-TAT-TAT of chugging through machine gun clips or the approaching taps of enemy footsteps.

Amnesia: Rebirth now has a less-spooky Adventure Mode

3 years 1 month ago

As a big stupid baby who is compelled to play horror games I know will freak my nut out, I am grateful to see Frictional Games add a less-spooky mode to another of their games. Today they blessed Amnesia: Rebirth with an 'Adventure Mode', an optional difficulty level which stops monsters murdering you while throwing in some extra puzzles for folks who just wanna explore somewhere strange and awful. That's nice, that. The game has a big discount to celebration the launch too.

What's your favourite video game Easter egg?

3 years 1 month ago

With Easter coming up, and Discount Easter egg Day soon after, I'm curious: what's your favourite Easter egg in video games? I suppose this world must house some edutainment game which would let you answer this literally, but I'm more interested in those hidden jokes, references, and oddities which surprise and delight. Tell me your favourite and who knows, maybe I'll eat a Cadbury Buttons egg in your honour. Next Tuesday, once they're cheap.

CD Projekt to Develop Witcher, Cyberpunk AAA Games Simultaneously Starting in 2022

3 years 1 month ago
After a long, drawn-out development for Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt is preparing to shift gears for future AAA projects, and work on games in both The Witcher and Cyberpunk franchises simultaneously beginning in 2022. During a Strategy Update presentation today, CD Projekt outlined how it's going to achieve its goals to develop two AAA games in two different franchises simultaneously, saying it intends to staff up over the next year and have development teams working on both projects at once, including leads. It's also planning to adjust the capabilities of its internal game engine to allow features like NPC routines and player character control to be adapted in multiple games at once. "We want to be sure that we can work with two global brands at the same time while ensuring top quality of our products," said CTO Paweł Zawodny. "We emphasize technological advancements and we want to set up versatile teams which combine various specializations and competencies. These teams will be further assisted by a cross-projects group of experts, who – owing to their expertise – can contribute to key aspects of development. All these changes aim to enable us to work on multiple AAA games and expansions in parallel, starting in 2022." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/07/cyberpunk-2077-review"] Though the presentation did not specify what either of these games would be, as CD Projekt made a point to say it was going to be more careful with how early it made announcements in the future given criticism of Cyberpunk's transformations from its original announcement, it did say it wants to continue adding onto the traditional RPG.

CD Projekt Acquires Canadian Development Studio

3 years 1 month ago
CD Projekt has announced that it has signed contracts to acquire Canadian studio Digital Scapes. Digital Scapes Studios, based in Vancouver, has been working with CD Projekt for three years during the production of Cyberpunk 2077. The studio will become CD Projekt Red Vancouver, and join the developer’s portfolio of teams that includes the three existing ones based in Warsaw, Krakow, and Wroclaw. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/07/cyberpunk-2077-review"] “We believe that the hugely talented Digital Scapes crew is the perfect foundation upon which to build a wider CD Projekt Red Vancouver team,” said Paweł Zawodny, Head of Production and CTO at CDPR in a statement announcing the acquisition move. “This is a great opportunity for Canadian developers to get involved with CD Projekt Red's incredible IP and for CD Projekt Red to tap into Canada's deep talent pool and game-making craft,” added Marcin Chady, the head of Vancouver studio. Large video game developers often work with studios outside of their native country in order to have access to worldwide talent and allow for development to continue beyond the timezone of the headquarters. A base in Vancouver will certainly offer this to CDPR, and already the studio is looking to recruit. For more from CDPR, check out the hugely detailed notes for Cyberpunk 2077 patch 1.2, which contains hundreds of changes. It’s available now. Following the successful return of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Disney is continuing its hot hand in animation with Star Wars: The Bad Batch. This new ongoing series is created by Dave Filoni, who pretty much has a hand in all of the great Star Wars shows, including The Mandalorian and Clone Wars. The first episode of the season kicks off on Disney+ on May 4 (Star Wars day) with a lengthy 70-minute premiere.

The Bad Batch is another name for Clone Force 99, a team that fans have wanted to see more since their debut in a Clone Wars episode. In a new trailer, we see Tech, Crosshair, Wrecker, and Echo in action, and they are joined by two surprising cameos that bridge the gap between various Star Wars properties. All of these clones are voiced by the phenomenal Dee Bradley Baker, who gives each one a distinct personality. Their differences are what makes this group so much fun to follow.

Shadowverse: Champion's Battle Comes To Nintendo Switch This Summer

3 years 1 month ago

This summer, a curated take on the Shadowverse card game and anime comes to Nintendo Switch. While Shadowverse is already fairly widely known in digital card game circles on mobile and Steam, this upcoming experience is more of an RPG where you take the role of the hero and battle against a bunch of opponents. If this sounds kind of like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh! meets the Shadowverse universe, you're in the right ballpark! Check out the trailer below for a glimpse of what's on deck here...

Click here to watch embedded media

You can play as seven different classes, and looking at the trailer they're modeled after deck archetypes that you can play in the Shadowverse card game right now. The single-player campaign looks quite traditional as you battle your way to the top and save the day, and there are also multiplayer components to battle other players online.

Unlock cards, deck options, and take on a variety of foes as you climb your way up the ranks of Tensei Academy. You might be wondering why you'd do that when you can already get a much more robust multiplayer competitive experience in the core Shadowverse game, but it does sort of change the metagame in terms of what kind of decks and cards are available.

Finally, the Switch version of Fortnite is getting a more stable framerate

3 years 1 month ago

I've been playing Fortnite weekly for...a long time now, and generally, I favor the Switch.

Fortnite has been one of my go-to "wind down" games at night, and my wife and I play together portably basically wherever we want. A few missions here, some battle progress there, it's a good chill out experience. I just got another Victory Royale last night, actually!

But while it is fun for sure, the Switch port has been lagging behind since it launched. Muddy visuals and an unstable framerate are mostly to blame, but those are hopefully being addressed today with a rather massive update specifically for the Switch edition.

It's bringing up the resolution to 1170x660 in handheld form and 1560x880 in docked form, which is a 38% increase in pixels for the former, Epic Games says. It'll also grant Switch users 140MB of extra storage space (compression), and these changes will enable a "consistent framerate."

Here's the full rundown from Epic: "So what does this mean for Switch players? The update provides significantly improved resolution both in handheld and docked modes, resulting in images that are less blurry, without loss of performance. The update also provides a more consistent framerate, with fewer hitches, resulting in a smoother experience overall."

Good! It's been lingering for far too long, especially in light of the PS5 and Series X upgrades.

You can get a look at the upgrade below, with the old visuals on the left and the new ones on the right. Notice the extra details like the individual leaves on the tree.

Team Ninja fixes Nioh 2 PC crashing issue

3 years 1 month ago

Remember when Team Ninja said it was "looking into" reports of Nioh 2 crashes on PC? Well, they looked into it!

Ironically, the bug was introduced with a prior patch, leaving Team Ninja to scramble and find a fix for it. That very fix has been implemented as of now, as part of version 1.27.1. These changes have been applied to the Steam/PC and PS5 editions of the game.

It's not a super exciting patch, as everything is intended to squash issues entirely. I'm talking crashes (including a rare one when folks were "raising their level to 750 while using a mouse" - obscure!), and just plain old random crashes. There's three separate bullet points for crash fixes, and one of them was triggered "in certain environments." That sounds...common!

The PS5 fixes involve "other minor bugs," but also address 120FPS problems where "certain enemies" were going crazy when the framerate was jacked up. Ah, designing frame-perfect action games isn't easy!

UK Charts: Super Mario 3D All-Stars sales spike 276% ahead of store removal

3 years 1 month ago

We have a brand new number one this week, as Capcom's Monster Hunter Rise inevitably debuted in the top spot of the UK Charts. The fantasy adventure, which has already sold an amazing four million copies worldwide, leads a streak of Top Ten Switch dominance.

The news of Monster Hunter Rise's success has been somewhat eclipsed, however, by a ridiculous sales spike for Nintendo's Super Mario 3D All-Stars. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the retro compendium saw its sales boosted by 276% last week, no doubt in anticipation of the title's de-listing, scheduled for tomorrow, March 31. The imminent removal of the title, heavily promoted by Nintendo, led to a rush of panic-buying, ultimately reinstalling the title in the number two spot. What a fucking surprise.

Call of Duty: Cold War & Warzone reveal contents of tomorrow's Reloaded Season 2 update

3 years 1 month ago

The fight goes on in Activision's tribizillion-dollar shooter franchise Call of Duty. Tomorrow will see the launch of "Reloaded", a mid-season update for both Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and its sister battle royale title Call of Duty: Warzone. The coming weeks will see a slew of new content made available for both releases, because the bullets. won't. stop.

Firstly, Black Ops Cold War will receive its reworked Miami map, Miami Strike, which hopes to improve the rep of the neon nightmare - which I actually quite like, to be honest. Miami Strike will be running a 24/7 playlist in order to help the community get to grips with the new, streamlined layout. My Tiki bar better still be standing.

Speaking of maps, third-act campaign locale Mansion will be added to Gunfight and Face Off modes, while Golova is getting copy-pasted from the excellent Outbreak mode to enter rotation in the not-quite-as-excellent Fireteam. New modes will include Multi-Team Hardpoint, (which sounds like total chaos), Gunfight Tournament, and a Blueprint-based variant of Gun Game.

Cyberpunk 2077 1.2 Patch Notes Got Its Very Own Star Wars Title Crawl

3 years 1 month ago

Yesterday afternoon, CD Projekt Red made a blog post detailing the next patch for Cyberpunk 2077. And while we certainly expected a lot of improvements, no one could have guessed the 1.2 patch would have over 500 changes.

Those changes include everything from quality-of-life touch-ups to major updates that’ll improve the flow of the game. To read through all of them would probably take you a bit, though.

In fact, Cyberpunk 2077’s 1.2 patch is so gigantic that a Redditor managed to format it into its very own Star Wars title crawl. In the video, the user, named Axerol, included every single one of the implementations, which you can see below.

CD Projekt Red Acquires Developer Digital Scapes & Announce Red 2.0 Development Strategy

3 years 1 month ago

Earlier today, CD Projekt Red revealed that they’ve come to terms with the Vancouver-based game dev studio Digital Scape. According to the blog post, the two have been in close cooperation since 2018.

The deal was finalized yesterday, resulting in the official creation of CD Projekt Red Vancouver. The studio will be lead by Marcin Chudy, who had the following to say regarding the acquisition:

We are very excited to join a studio that forges the incredibly engaging, vastly scoped experiences, such as The Witcher trilogy and Cyberpunk 2077. We believe our contribution in the area of gameplay and technology can make them even more captivating. Being a Polish Canadian, I personally take great satisfaction in building bridges between Canadian and Polish game development industries. This is a great opportunity for Canadian developers to get involved with CD PROJEKT RED’s incredible IP and for CD PROJEKT RED to tap into Canada’s deep talent pool and game-making craft – remarks Marcin Chudy, Vancouver studio head.

CD Projekt Red Vancouver joins three existing development teams at the company – based in Warsaw, Kraków and Wrocław. The studio will work in tandem with the other dev teams on its upcoming projects.

In addition to the new studio, CD Projekt Red also revealed that they are working on a brand approach to how they create and market their games, titled Red 2.0.

Monster Hunter Rises to the Occasion Thanks to the Switch

3 years 1 month ago

When I reviewed Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate for the Switch back in 2018, I loved it, but stated that it felt a little dated by that point because of the loading screens between sectors. Especially if you were coming from World, MHGU felt sluggish by comparison.

It was still a fantastic MonHun portable experience, though, and it looked good, but with the release of last week’s Monster Hunter Rise, it feels like the series has finally reached its full potential on Nintendo’s newest console.

My first thought when I booted up Monster Hunter Rise on Switch was that it looked surprisingly gorgeous. Built with Capcom’s impressive proprietary RE Engine, Rise is graphically and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The environments aren’t as detailed as what you might be used to in World, of course, but it’s still easily one of the prettiest games you can get on the Switch right now.

The cutscenes and animations are fluid, the character models look good, and most importantly, everything feels really freaking smooth.

Gone are the archaic sector load screens from MHGU, Monster Hunter Rise features seamless worlds that you can explore freely. The levels here are much smaller than the vast ones in World, but that makes it perfect for a compact experience.

Amnesia: Rebirth drops darkness, jump scares, and deadly monsters in new Adventure Mode

3 years 1 month ago

Frictional Games' desert horror Amnesia: Rebirth has just received a free new Adventure Mode, stripping out the game's life-threatening monster encounters, jump scares, and darkness for those keen to experience its story without fear of fainting dead away.

Amnesia: Rebirth - the third game in the series, following on from Frictional's 2010 original and the Chinese-Room-developed A Machine for Pigs - launched last year, taking players on an unsettling adventure across the Algerian desert in the 1930s.

Its tale - focusing on protagonist Tasi Trianon as she traverses the hostile expanse, pulling together fragments of her past - earned much praise on release (Eurogamer reviewer Vikki Blake called it an "impressive horror subversion" and a story that "gripped me right up until the credits rolled"), and Rebirth's new Adventure Mode aims to make it more accessible to all.
