Ninja Turtles in Smite means we're blessed with footage of Michelangelo catching big air over a fire demon

3 years 5 months ago

Where were you when Tony Hawk landed the 900? Where were you Danny Way jumped over the Great Wall of China? Where were you when I went over the half-pipe, through the secret room, collected the hidden tape, and grinded the quarter-pipe along the whole back wall?

Iconic moments in skateboarding history. More iconic than the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles skating all over Smite? Tough to say.

Smite's new battle pass launches tomorrow, and it's completely TMNT-centric. We learned about this collaboration last month, and how Hi-Rez Studios is reskinning the Turtles to play the roles of existing gods. We were not prepared for the sheer number of ollies and kickflips and pizza-eating that we'd get. Judging by the new trailer that dropped today, I'm not convinced the Turtles will make good on any of the battle arena aspects of MOBA.

And maybe that's why I love this trailer. It's not bogged down in attack stats and roles. There's no minutiae, there's just skateboards and pepperoni. Here are the TMNT Battle Pass update notes for anyone who is interested in the nitty gritty. I'm just here to watch Michaelangelo catch big air over a Fire Giant.

Dragon Quest XI S has a 10-hour Definitive Edition demo on PC, PS4, and Xbox One

3 years 5 months ago

If you're in the mood for Dragon Quest XI S and want to get a head-start on December's Definitive Edition release for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, there's a meaty new demo on all three platforms.

The demo spans "the entirety of the opening chapters," according to Square Enix, and apart from being able to transfer your file to the full game, you'll earn three stat-boosting Seed of Skill items as a bonus. It's pretty wild to think about a demo exceeding the length (and quality) of full commercial games.

There's a lot packed into this version of Dragon Quest XI, hence that long-ass name. This improved port of the Nintendo Switch game runs better and has all of the previous niceties like the orchestrated soundtrack, an ultra-fast speed toggle, Japanese VO, and the nostalgia-inducing top-down 2D mode.

Things get a little funky when you look into side-by-side-by-side comparisons of Dragon Quest XI, the Switch edition, and this Definitive Edition release, but I think the pros far outweigh the cons.

Is it just me, or has there been an influx of unusually generous game demos lately? I'm in heaven.

Podtoid starts November by remembering its favorite Treehouse of Horror episodes

3 years 5 months ago

There are many great autumn traditions we celebrate in this country. Pumpkin-spiced everything, Thanksgiving, radio stations playing Christmas music way too damn early, but my favorite tradition is taking time to watch the newest "Treehouse of Horror" episode on The Simpsons. Are they are good as they used to be? Nah, but they're still usually better than the rest of the season.

That's just one of the topics on this episode of Podtoid. CJ, Chris, Occams, and Charlotte talk TV, No More Heroes, Duolingo, Silent Hill, and Cruel Jaws. All that, plus we answer some listener questions, on Podtoid Episode 465.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot just added a free card battle mode and I'm getting Triple Triad flashbacks

3 years 5 months ago

Final Fantasy VIII. Final Fantasy XIV. The Witcher 3. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Am I just naming cool RPGs, or games that have card battlers inside of them? Both!

The onslaught of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot DLC and updates continues, as Bandai Namco just recently added the free new mode "Card Warriors," which allows players to build decks and take on opponents...in card form. This joins the Time Machine mechanic (that lets you go back and repeat previous content) and two major DLC packs (one of which is still on the way).

The below video will give you a gist of the game, which should be enough to judge whether or not it's worth booting up or re-installing your copy. In short, you build your deck with 25 character or event cards, as well as five "SP" cards (which are triggered by combinations of event cards). Your job is to defeat your opponent by knocking down their health total (much like Magic or Hearthstone): simple enough! It even uses the Hearthstone "mana" style economy, with the power to "bank" energy once.

As someone who regularly plays a ton of deckbuilders (Marvel Champions, Lord of the Rings LCG, Arkham Horror: The Card game, Magic, Hearthstone), I'm glad that card games are still so prolific in just about every corner of media.

Demon's Souls PS5 Has Over 180 Guide Videos in the UI

3 years 5 months ago
The Demon’s Souls remake on PlayStation 5 will indeed take advantage of the activities bar and feature over 180 help videos that players can choose to watch to complete sections of the game. As reported in The Washington Post, Demon’s Souls “will make use of the PS5’s activities UI, which offers helpful tips regarding certain tasks. [Demon’s Souls remake creative director Gavin] Moore says there are over 180 videos, each with increasing levels of visibility into what’s needed to complete portions of the game[.]” Sony outlined the revamped PS5 UI in a deep dive last month which showed off the new Activities feature. Aside from tracking players’ progress in missions, the Activities bar can show players video hints that can help reveal hidden objectives or checkpoints. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=ps5-ui-screenshots&captions=true"] Demon’s Souls is a notoriously difficult game, so being able to bring up video help on the fly could be beneficial for new players. Especially since an M.O. of the Souls series is intentionally keeping certain game mechanics or challenges opaque. This feature is also optional, so players who don’t want to watch the videos can ignore it by never bringing it up in the UI. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/29/demons-souls-ps5-gameplay-trailer"] Sony’s UI demo from October showed Sack Boy Adventures utilizing the help feature in the Activities UI, so that’s two confirmed PS5 games utilizing the feature.

How Club Penguin Came Back As a Horrifying Blood Sport

3 years 5 months ago

Club Penguin was an idyllic place to waste your time. It was always either a gorgeous sunny day or a brisk cloudless night. Snowcap mountains towered over the distant horizon, bright yuletide storefronts lined the streets, and players found a nation of cheerful, polychrome penguins greeting them at every corner. They logged on to chill in gaudy igloo manors before scampering off with friends to play a variety of simple, Flash-based mini-games. Club Penguin was free-to-play and available on even the most primitive PC specs. You could do a lot worse on a Tuesday afternoon.

Notorious Half-Life 2 achievement recalled as Gabe Newell fires garden gnome into space

3 years 5 months ago

Half-Life 2: Episode 2's Little Rocket Man achievement - still one of the finest achievements ever created, if you ask me - is poised to become reality, as Valve's Gabe Newell prepares to launch a garden gnome into space for charity.

Little Rocket Man was a notoriously tricksy achievement to secure, forcing players to carry an entirely innocuous garden gnome - dubbed Gnome Chompski - from the start of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 to a rocket ship toward the end of the game.

It's the stuff of legend, in large part thanks to Chompski's casual disregard for the laws of physics - which would often, infuriatingly, result in the gnome's impromptu high-velocity launch from the back of your open-top vehicle whenever it reached speeds higher than single digits - and Newell will be commemorating it as part of a drive to raise money for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of children's hospital Starship, in Auckland, New Zealand.

From Software is here to reopen that wound and pour salt in it.

Have You Played… Pyre?

I’m convinced everyone at Supergiant Games were watching old episodes of Gladiators on the ITV Hub when they were making Pyre. I get the basketball comparisons, obvs, but it reminded me so much of powerball that I couldn’t help but wonder why referee John Anderson wasn’t asking me if I was ready at the beginning of every match.

Watch Dogs Legion review - a bleak and buggy retread of Ubisoft's formula

3 years 5 months ago

Before we get going, I need to acknowledge something: the numerous misconduct allegations levelled at high profile Ubisoft employees. We know things have been tough and the company is certainly making all the right noises, but I feel strongly that reviews should, where possible, reflect on the culture in which games are created. Though I worry that art can't be divorced from the artist, at the same time, I appreciate that many hundreds of people contribute to Ubisoft's vast portfolio, and that their work shouldn't be overshadowed by the disgraceful conduct of a handful of people. It's a balance I'm still struggling with, to be honest, but it's hard to immerse yourself in a game that has seemingly come at such a cost to some. Here's hoping this is the last time a Ubisoft game comes with this caveat, eh?

The old adage says it's grim up North, but I'm not sure anything north of the M25 is as grim as Ubisoft's devastating vision of a broken, near-future London.

Mass Effect voice cast reunite for a “very special” N7 Day panel

3 years 5 months ago

Ah, N7 Day. A time for Mass Effect fans to come together and be sad because there hasn’t been a new game in the series since 2017 (even then, we don’t particularly like talking about that one). This year could be different, though. On Saturday the 7th November, a couple of BioWare developers and a bunch of voice actors from the Mass Effect trilogy are holding a “very special” panel.

Call of Duty: Warzone Won't Shift Engine, Even Though Black Ops Cold War Has

3 years 5 months ago
Call of Duty: Warzone won't be switching engine when it welcomes content from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - even though Black Ops Cold War uses a new engine itself. A verified Activision Art Lead revealed the news on ResetEra. "There will not be an engine shift for WZ," writes ShutterMunster, in response to a comment chain about the future of the battle royale game. Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War runs on a new engine, but it looks like Warzone won't be making the switch, despite the fact that weapons, operators and loadouts from the latest Call of Duty game will be brought to Warzone as part of a cross-franchise integration, arriving in December. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/23/call-of-duty-warzone-review"] The decision means that Warzone should feel broadly the same to play, even while the tools of war you use may be altered drastically by the update (although existing, Modern Warfare-themed equipment will reamin available to players). Equally, it may mean that playing Warzone and Black Ops Cold War side-by-side may take some getting used to. Some players in the same ResetEra thread are concerned about how the Black Ops Cold War arsenal of weapons will be balanced in Warzone when they make the jump between engines. We're sure we'll hear more about that when the game's integration is detailed further. Back in September, Activision reportedly banned around 20,000 Call of Duty Warzone cheaters during the launch of the game's Season 6 update.

Mass Effect N7 Day panel announcement sets fan tongues wagging

3 years 5 months ago

A Mass Effect N7 Day panel is set for this weekend - and fans are crossing their fingers for a reveal of the heavily-rumoured Mass Effect Trilogy remaster.

Rumours of a remaster were stoked when an Art of the Mass Effect Trilogy: Expanded Edition book popped up for pre-order in July. Sporting a 23rd February 2021 release date, this new book includes hundreds of never-before-seen works of art, according to its description on the likes of Amazon and elsewhere.

Now, Jennifer Hale, aka FemShep, tweeted to announce a panel to celebrate N7 Day set for 7pm UK time this Saturday, 7th November. What's interesting is the panel has many of the actors who played the characters of the Mass Effect crew, including Mark Meer (Male Shep), Steve Blum (Grunt), Kimberly Brooks (Ashley Williams), Raphael Sbarge (Kaidan Alenko), Courtenay Taylor (Jack), Alix Wilton Regan (Samantha Traynor), William Salyers (Mordin Solus), D.C. Douglas (Legion), and Ali Hillis (Liara T'Soni), as well as BioWare developers Karin Weekes and Patrick Weekes.

FIFA 21 patch makes the ref calm down a bit with the yellow cards

3 years 5 months ago

FIFA 21's latest title update is out now, and it makes some welcome changes to the game.

The focus here is on fixing bugs, rather than making sweeping balance or gameplay changes. However, some tweaks have been made to the way FIFA 21 plays. For example, the patch has adjusted the referee logic in potential yellow card scenarios so that the likelihood of a yellow card being given is reduced. Given how often the FIFA 21 ref would dish out yellows, this is very much a good thing.

Elsewhere, EA has nerfed the Ball Roll to Scoop Turn skill move combination, so that it now requires a five star skill move rating to perform.

This Oculus Quest 2 VR headset is £20 less from Argos right now

3 years 5 months ago

With VR prices beginning to drop over the last few years even, as the technology gets more advanced, it's always nice to see those two things meet in the middle. That's why those in the UK should be able to get £20 off the bigger 256GB version of the new Oculus Quest 2, a VR headset designed to be used independently of a PC or console.

To get the deal, head to the Argos eBay page linked below, add the Quest to your basket and enter the code 'PRODUCT5' at checkout to take £20 off. Be quick though - the deal is for today only!

For the few who are unaware, most VR headsets need to be plugged into a larger device (such as a PS4 or your desktop). But the Quest is an exception. No more being tangled in wires or limited to whatever room you keep your computer in, the Quest doesn't even require sensors placed around the room. That doesn't mean you can't plug it into a computer for a more high-end experience, but it works perfectly well without one. The only time you'll need wires is to charge it up like any other portable device.

Gran Turismo 7 Reportedly Aiming to Launch in First Half of 2021

3 years 5 months ago
Gran Turismo 7 may launch in the first half of 2021, according to a reported Canadian PlayStation 5 advertisement. As reported by GTPlanet (and spotted by user ElietheStig on the site's forums,) a YouTube advert for the PlayStation 5 shows an image from the game. The screenshot is accompanied by a small piece of text, which reads "Sortie prévue pour la première moitié de 2021," which when translated reads "Release scheduled for the first half of 2021." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/11/gran-turismo-7-announcement-and-gameplay-trailer-ps5-reveal-event"] Sony has yet to announce an official release date for Gran Turismo 7, which was revealed back in June of this year, but this advert suggests that we might see Gran Turismo 7 release within the PlayStation 5's launch window, at some point in early 2021. The advert is yet to be verified by multiple sources, so do take it with a pinch of salt. If you want to learn more about Gran Turismo 7, you can check out our piece from the game's announcement here, which digs into some of the features coming to the game, including the reintroduction of GT Simulation Mode. An official PlayStation Blog post added that the game will benefit from the haptic feedback provided by the DualSense and the PlayStation 5's 3D Audio system. Review: Bakugan: Champions of Vestroia

3 years 5 months ago

For this review, I went a little above and beyond. I did some training. Training with Bakugan toys: to really get into the vibe of this new Switch game.

Seriously! Ahead of the review period, the publisher sent me a box of Bakugan balls and an arena. How could I not try it?! My wife and I spent round after round battling it out together, chucking these things into a ring and comparing stats. I can see the appeal.

Unfortunately, the Switch iteration doesn't quite capture most of the fun of the physical game.

What's new with Gears 5 on Xbox Series X?

3 years 5 months ago

One of the trends we're seeing with this new generation of consoles is the arrival of visual updates for last generation games - basically, new features designed to take advantage of more powerful hardware. Gears 5 is one of the first titles revealed to be receiving this sort of update and along with upcoming story DLC, it feels almost like a soft relaunch. In the process, one of the best-looking games for Xbox One looks better than ever - it's basically a graphics and performance upgrade with some cool new features added in.

To get the basics out of the way first, Gears 5 retains the use of dynamic resolution scaling, but based on pixel counting a selection of shots, it seems to average out at around 1728p during gameplay, with full 2160p manifesting in less busy situations. Interestingly, the lower bounds is still 1080p - just as it was on Xbox One X - but it's extremely uncommon for resolution to hit this level. By comparison, Xbox One X could drop to near 1080p much more often.

The multiplayer mode is a little more aggressive with its dynamic resolution solution owing to its higher performance targets - yes, 120 frames per second is the target - but it still looks solid. Image quality was already good thanks to Unreal's temporal anti-aliasing implementation and it's improved here thanks to a higher average resolution. We don't yet have a Series S console but we were told that Gears 5 maxes out at 1440p on the high-end suggesting an average resolution somewhere between Xbox One and Xbox One X while still hitting the same frame-rate targets as Series X.
