Looks like there's a third season of Netflix's The Witcher on the way

3 years 7 months ago

Netflix has seemingly greenlit a third season of The Witcher.

Though the second season has yet to finish filming, the eagle-eyed folks over at Redanian Intelligence (thanks, VG24/7) have spotted that a listing on the Writer's Guild of America West website reports a third season of the critically-acclaimed show is going ahead, once again with Lauren Hissrich, showrunner for The Witcher Netflix series, at the helm.

Beyond confirmation of Hissrich's participation, the only other clue given by the site is that production is slated to take place across 2020 and 2021.

Apex Legends dev confirms plans for real-time damage meters are "on a list"

3 years 7 months ago

Respawn's free-to-play battle royale may soon sport a real-time damage tracker.

In a brief exchange on Twitter, a fan reached out to Apex Legends' design director, Jason McCord, to ask if there were plans afoot to add a damage meter to "see how much damage you have in real time for let's say getting a damage badge", adding, "it really sucks knowing I needed 25 damage to get the 4K".

McCord's response wasn't lengthy, admittedly, and didn't confirm when we'll see it, let alone how the feature would be implemented, but they did confirm that it's "on a list" (thanks, DBLTAP).

Development of Payday 3 is still in the "design phase" and using Unreal Engine

3 years 7 months ago

Payday Starbreeze developer has dropped a brief update on Payday 3.

While we haven't heard much about the co-operative shooter in recent months, the official PayDay 2 Twitter account "confirmed" the release date was still "TBA", and that the sequel is now in the "design phase" using Unreal Engine.

The tweet also revealed a single screenshot from the new game, too, although let's be honest - it doesn't give us much to go on, does it? Here, take a peek (thanks, wccftech):

The World Begins with You

3 years 7 months ago

[The media we consume can often affect us in subtle ways, but every once in a while, something will come along that leaves a substantial and lasting impact. Pretty much everyone has a song, album, movie, or TV show that really resonated with them for one reason or another. For Nior, that was a video game called The World Ends With You. – Kevin]

Adolescence is the strangest thing. It's that confusing period between childhood and adulthood where you're expected to act more like the latter but can't enjoy any of its perks. At the same time, you can't fall back on the antics of the former either. For many, it's a confusing period where it’s all too easy to get lost in between finding out who you want to be, versus what you are expected to become.

Genshin Impact could use a few adjustments on mobile

3 years 7 months ago

Genshin Impact spent most of its time leading up to release as that game people couldn't talk about without mentioning The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Now that it's out, the similarities and differences between the two titles have become clearer. Genshin Impact has a similar scope to Breath of the Wild, a similar if-you-can-see-it-you-can-climb-it open-world, gliding mechanics, recipes, stamina meter, and fast-travel towers, to name a few. However, it's the differences between the two titles that really illustrate how Genshin Impact is not just a Legend of Zelda clone.

Spend a few hours with Genshin and you'll understand how the two titles differ. That feeling of freedom that permeates throughout Breath of the Wild just isn't here, as Genshin Impact follows a more traditional, story-driven path forward. It has multiple characters you can switch between on the fly, each playing a bit different than the next. And, of course, the biggest difference between the two is Genshin Impact is free-to-play and available on mobile, which is how I've personally been enjoying the world of Teyvat.

Crash Bandicoot 4 Tops UK Sales With Star Wars: Squadrons Hot on Its Tail

3 years 7 months ago

The UKIE and GFK have published their physical software sales chart for this week in the UK.

The chart, reported by GamesIndustry, sees Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time at the top, followed by Star Wars: Squadrons close on its tail having sold only 1,000 units less than the newest adventure of everyone’s favorite bandicoot.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time has sold 82% of its copies on PS4, while 68% is the percentage of sales on Sony’s console for Star Wars: Squadrons.

Super Mario 3D All-Star drops down to third place after dominating the chart last week, while Animal Crossing: New Horizons stays stable in 4th place.

Marvel’s Avengers drops by three positions down to fifth place, pushing the evergreen Mario Kart 8: Deluxe down to sixth.

The duo Minecraft Dungeon and Minecraft follow in seventh and eighth place, while Mafia: Definitive Edition plummets from the podium all the way down to ninth place, followed by Mafia Trilogy which closes the chart.

Considering precedents, there are few doubts that next week the chart will be dominated by FIFA21, with the FIFA franchise usually usually holding the top spot in the UK for extended periods.

You can check out the full top ten for yourself below.

Super Mario Bros. 35 is not Battle Royale so much as Mario without the Memory Tax

3 years 7 months ago

It's rare, I suspect, to wake up on your 35th birthday feeling young again - but then, Mario is not your typical fellow. Super Mario Bros. 35 takes its strange lead from Tetris 99: another free download (if you are part of Nintendo's Online thingy) that reinterprets a single-player classic as a massively-multiplayer affair. It's very interesting, though. Tetris 99 pits you against dozens of other Tetris players, all stuffed in their own Celebrity Squares spots on the edges of the screen, and it really feels like a Battle Royale. Mario does a similar trick, with 34 other players, obv, and it doesn't feel like a Battle Royale at all. Not to get too cosmic, but this is a Mario game that drives you inward.

I think this is down to the kind of memories I have of Super Mario Bros, the game that Mario 35 repurposes. This is one of my first real memories of a video game place, a place that I learned to live in quite thoroughly through endless cross-legged repetition. Even now I can predict the arrivals of a Goomba or a Bullet Bill. Even now I know that peculiar inertia of Mario as he takes to the air or changes direction.

So to see these places reconfigured puts me right back in the centre of my mind again, deep down, in a sort of fascinated isolation as I try to understand what has changed. The point of Mario 35 is to play Mario better than anyone else. Your victories send enemies - Goombas, Koopas, what have you - onto rival screens while their victories send enemies onto yours. This means that I'll be playing 1-1 and I'll suddenly find three ghostly Goombas trotting along where they had never trotted along before, utterly breaking the sequence. Mario is challenging again, and freed from years of what chess players refer to as Memory Tax.

Nvidia's RTX 3070 is coming on October 29th

A photo of Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang holding the RTX 3070.

Nvidia have confirmed that the [cms-block] will launch on October 29th, just a day after the planned reveal of AMD’s upcoming [cms-block] GPUs. The RTX 3070 is the third and final graphics card of Nvidia’s currently announced new Ampere family to come out this year, following on from the launch of the [cms-block] and [cms-block] last month. It’s due to deliver RTX 2080 Ti-level speeds for a fraction of the cost, practically guaranteeing that its shelf life is going to be even more short-lived than either of its still sold out Ampere siblings.

Here's the full map of Cyberpunk 2077's Night City

3 years 7 months ago

A paper map of Cyberpunk 2077's Night City, included with boxed copies of the game, has leaked online.

The street plan posted to Resetera shows every district of the game's main hub, its major roads and some of the areas outside the city's boundaries we've caught only a glimpse of so far.

Watson is the neon-lit area where you start the game - the one seen in the first gameplay demo back at E3 2018. A year later we were treated to a tour of the dilapidated Pacifica, an unfinished tourist spot which has fallen to gangs and crime.

Crash 4 and Star Wars Squadrons fail to beat N.Sane Trilogy and Fallen Order boxed sales

3 years 7 months ago

Crash Bandicoot 4 was the best-selling boxed game in the UK last week, narrowly beating Star Wars Squadrons to the UK chart top spot.

But neither game beat the last game in their respective franchises - both boxed sales totals were down around 80 per cent.

There's always the digital factor in play - download sales are still not counted by UK numbers company Chart-Track - and it's likely slightly more sales will be digital in 2020, even for mass market games like Crash.

Cyberpunk 2077 Has Gone Gold; Release Date Locked in

3 years 7 months ago

Developer CD Projekt Red has today announced that its hotly anticipated RPG Cyberpunk 2077 has gone gold, confirming that its Nov. 19 release date is locked in.

In case you’re wondering, the term “going gold” is old-fashioned games industry lingo that essentially means the content is finished and ready for print on discs, though these days its somewhat lost its significance given that virtually every game is constantly updated throughout its life cycle.

Still, it’s exciting that after numerous delays Cyberpunk 2077 is certainly going to hit its fall launch date, arriving just after the launch of Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

The game has been confirmed to be coming for Xbox Series X and PS5 down the line with upgrades available for those who purchase the game for the current generation of consoles.

For some gameplay to hold you over until Nov. 19, you can check out a trailer showcasing some of the gangs that roam Night City’s mean streets.

Payday 3 in Development on Unreal Engine

3 years 7 months ago
Overkill Software has confirmed that Payday 3 is currently in development on the Unreal Engine. In a celebratory tweet to mark 100 thousand followers, the Payday Twitter account revealed the news with a cheeky tweet featuring a 1337 hacker breaking into CRIMENET to find out the news. Payday 3's existence was confirmed as far back as 2016, but this new tweet adds that the game is currently in the design phase, and is being built within the Unreal Engine. The switch to Unreal is notable, given that Payday 2 was built using Overkill's own Diesel Engine – it may be that we see Payday use the impressive Unreal Engine 5.
