In an interview with CNET, Ryan confirmed that The Last of Us Part II will run without issue on Sony's next console. Although he made no mention of potential visual upgrades that could accompany the generational jump, he did confirm that the game as it launches next month will be playable on the PS5.

Ryan also mentions that The Last of Us Part II won't feature in the recently confirmed PS5 digital event on June 4, with the event focusing on games that will launch with the PS5 this holiday season, and during the months afterwards.

Chad Muska is the best Tony Hawk's Pro Skater character of all time, don't at me

3 years 11 months ago

I still remember where I was when I picked up Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the first time.

I was at my friend David's house, completely unaware for what we were getting ourselves into. We were learning the ropes, then suddenly: "Superman" came on. It sounds cliche to say that hearing one song was a life-changing moment, but eight hours later, it still felt like we were in a split-screen trance. We just couldn't stop playing it.

That similar scene would happen as I played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 and listened to "No Cigar" over and over, or "96 Quite Bitter Beings" in Tony Hawk 3, and...you get the picture. Soundtracks are a huge part of what makes THPS so memorable for a large swath of people, but the skaters were naturally a big draw as well.

Growing up, in and out of the game I was always a fan of Chad Muska. I not only admired his passion for skating, but the fact that each and every Tony Hawk entry he would reinvent himself and almost feel like a completely different person. He's also one of the few members of the cast that stuck with the series for so long, as he was frequently a large part of the various story modes across its strong decade-plus run.

He's still supporting the franchise, actually, as is evidenced in the video below, where he muses on the impact of Tony Hawk has a whole. That said, Brett also makes a compelling case for Rune Glifberg!

Mortal Kombat 11 Sheeva Fatalities, Brutalities, Krushing Blow and Friendship guide

3 years 11 months ago

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is now available to purchase. This paid DLC expansion to NetherRealm Studios' gory fighter includes five-chapter epilogue to the base game's story, as well as three new characters: Wind god Fujin, guest star RoboCop, and the welcome return of the Shokan Queen, Sheeva.

Sheeva made her Mortal Kombat debut back in 1995's Mortal Kombat 3, where she was the bodyguard of Shao Kahn's bride, Sindel (more accurately, she was responsible for keeping Kitana from reaching her mother and informing her of the truth about their bloodline). In Mortal Kombat 11, Sheeva returns with far more agency as a strong, proud and courageous ruler, sympathetic to EarthRealm's plight and honourable to her allies old and new.

The multi-armed Shokan continues her heritage as the powerhouse of the MK universe. Kitted out with a wealth of devastating grabs and throws, Sheeva is a terrifying foe at close range. If that wasn't enough, Sheeva also has an excellent projectile and an infuriating, unblockable full-screen stomp. All of these tools combine to make Her Highness one of the most dangerous characters on the roster, equipped to handle both close kombat and repetitive zoners.

Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid aims to be the first fighting game with five-way cross-play

3 years 11 months ago

[Update: Battle for the Grid is now on Stadia, completing the promise of a fifth cross-play platform. To get it as a Stadia Pro member, head into the storefront and find it under "Stadia Pro Games" along with Panzer Dragoon, Superhot, Get Packed and Little Nightmares.]

What once started as a very rough project blossomed beautifully, as Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid adds another feature over a year into its launch.

According to the official Twitter account, once Battle for the Grid arrives on Stadia in June, it will join the array of cross-play capable versions that already exist. In other words, you can play across Stadia with Steam, PS4, Xbox One and Switch users. The developers make the claim that this is the first time a fighting game contains cross-play across five different platforms.

It's still weird to see Sony playing ball with PS4 cross-play after openly mocking it for so long. We're entering a brave new era now where cross-play is expected, and should hopefully be seen as a basic feature. Having grown up for several decades and heard the "oh man you got the [Xbox/PlayStation] version, we can't play now" phrase followed by a groan, it's great to see that games not only are unified, but have larger communities behind them.

That'll only ensure their preservation for longer, sometimes without the need to buy a sequel or "Super Edition" sooner.

Sony says it has no interest in making its PS5 games compatible with PS4

3 years 11 months ago

Ahead of its PlayStation 5 games reveal next week, Sony has shed more light on its next-gen transition plans, revealing that, counter to Microsoft's Xbox Series X strategy, it won't be making its PS5 games compatible with PlayStation 4.

Microsoft, of course, has pledged all its first-party Xbox Series X games will, for the console's first two years at least, be playable on existing Xbox One machines, albeit with additional bells and whistles for next-gen versions. According to Sony Interactive Entertainment's president and CEO Jim Ryan, however, that's not a strategy PlayStation plans to follow.

While Sony is now telling developers that new PS4 games must function on PlayStation 5, Ryan, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, confirmed the company has no interest in making its PS5 games compatible with PS4. "We have always said that we believe in generations," he explained, "We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include."

Replay — Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

3 years 11 months ago

Click here to watch embedded media

Last week, Joe Juba, Andrew Reiner, and I went on a journey with Gabriel Belmont and rediscovered what made Castlevania: Lords of Shadow so great, including its absolutely bonkers ending. We had so much fun that we decided to look past the faults of the sequel and see if we could keep the good times rolling with Lords of Shadow 2.

The results? A wacky episode filled with impressions of Muppets, musings on vampire dating simulators, and a large discussion centered on America's sweetheart: Nicholas Cage.

This week's show is prerecorded, but we'll be live and chatting with you again in a mere seven days. If you can't get enough of our live shows, remember to subscribe on YouTube, Twitch, MixerTwitter, and Facebook to get notified when we go live each week!

Call of Duty: Warzone Adds New Party Size Playlists

3 years 11 months ago

Infinity Ward has announced in a tweet that Call of Duty: Warzone now supports all of the expected battle royale party sizes on every platform, so you can game with your squad no matter what you play on.

The game now allows for solos, duos, trios, and quads. Just for good measure you can now also play Plunder is quads as well.

When Call of Duty: Warzone first launched in March, the only available party size was trios, but the game has undergone many changes since then and now you and one, two, or three friends can journey into the gun-laden map and hunt the elusive victory.

Of course, with any battle royale, you don’t need to have a pre-made party for this and every playlist (besides solos, of course) will let you fill your party with other random players.

Forget Shulk, These 5 Xenoblade Characters Should Be in Smash Bros

3 years 11 months ago

Mythra/Pyra

xenoblade smash bros

This is probably one of the most requested Xenoblade Chronicles characters for Smash Bros. Ultimate. Even though transformation characters are pretty much gone now, there are still a few ways that this combination of light and fire blades could work.

First off, there’s always the option of making Mythra and Pyra a transformation character. Pokemon Trainer still exists and even though the fighters aren’t technically transforming, it’s still the same concept.

If you wanted them to be individual fighters, then you could have one of them be an echo. That way you can keep all the Mythra and Pyra fans happy. Then give them their special attacks from XC2 and make their level four special their final smashes and you’re good to go.

Azur Lane: Crosswave for Switch Has Higher Age Rating than PS4 Version; Gets Screenshots & Videos

3 years 11 months ago

Following yesterday’s reveal of the Nintendo Switch version of Azur Lane: Crosswave, Compile Heart opened the official website, and it comes with plenty of interesting details.

First of all, we get a metric ton of screenshots and gameplay video, showcasing the game’s many characters, the improved photo mode which allows for portraying six shipgirls at once, storytelling, and gameplay.

An interesting and rather mysterious detail is that the game’s age rating for Nintendo Switch is different compared to the PS4 version.

To be more specific, the new rating is CERO D, which is the Japanese loose equivalent of an M rating, indicating a game suitable for players 17 or older.

The PS4 version is rather CERO C, which doesn’t really have an ESRB equivalent, setting the minimum age at 15.

The reasons for this change has not been explicitly explained and the only two differences mentioned so far are the inclusion of Taihou and Formidable in the base game and the renewed photo mode.

Both may be the casuse, but the official website mentions “more freedom,” for the photo mode, possibly indicating that more daring camera angles may be achieved.

It’s worth mentioning that the PS4 game received a Teen rating from the ESRB (13+). It’s not uncommon for games rated CERO C to receive Teen ratings in North America. The Switch version has not been announced for the west just yet, and didn’t receive a rating from the ESRB.

We’ll have to wait and see if Compile Heart will provide a more detailed breakdown of the differences among platforms.

You can find all the assets below.
