The Best PlayStation Games Of All Time

3 years 11 months ago

It’s been 25 years since the launch of the original PlayStation, and while games have evolved by leaps and bounds in the two and a half decades since, it’s impossible to deny the lasting impact Sony’s flat grey box had on the industry and pop culture at large.

From bandicoots to battle-hardened super-soldiers, the PlayStation is single-handedly responsible for some of the most iconic characters and franchises of all time, and while there are so so many to love, we wanted to look back at the very best the console had to offer. These are the greatest PS1 games of all time.

25. PaRappa the Rappa

Before Rock Band, before Guitar Hero, even before Dance Dance Revolution, there was Parappa the Rapper. An unlikely rapping game starring a cartoonishly flat dog and his animal pals, Parappa won us all over with catchy songs and a quirky charm that stood out among other games seeking to posture themselves as “extreme” or “hardcore” on the new generation. Nothing else on the console looked like Parappa (until Um Jammer Lammy arrived, of course). This rhyme-spitting canine is so beloved, in  fact, that we named him one of the top 10 dogs in video games. I gotta believe!

Outriders Supports Character Builds That Barely Need Guns at All

3 years 11 months ago
Outriders features a character customisation system so flexible that you can create a build that rarely needs to fire a gun. Talking to IGN, Outriders’ creative director, Bartosz Kmita, said “There are builds where you can even resign from shooting at all.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/28/outriders-preview"] The possibility comes from one of Outriders’ core combat philosophies. “We didn't want to create powers as an addition to the shooting mechanics,” says Kmita, referring to the game’s large selection of supernatural abilities. “We wanted it to be a 50/50 approach where the powers are as important as guns.” But that balance between the elements can be shifted as you progress and develop your character. “Through your different choices, depending on the loot you will find and on the character progression tree, you will decide if you want to shift more onto the skill side and make it even more of an RPG game with the skills, or maybe more of a shooting style, or stay 50/50,” explains Kmita. When I ask Kmita if it’s possible to make the game 90/10 focused on the supernatural powers, he replied “It's even more, because it depends on the items you will find. You will have the possibility to use your skills many times without cooldowns. There are builds where you can even resign from shooting at all.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=outriders-first-screenshots&captions=true"] Lead game designer Piotr Nowakowski points out that the World Tier - which dictates the difficulty of the game - may impact how successful your builds are. “There are ways to create builds that are really skills focused, with super short cooldowns that are resetting them all the time, but it's just a question of will that build work on higher tiers?” he muses.

Outriders Is Online Only, But Not a Service Game

3 years 11 months ago
Outriders requires a constant internet connection, but this does not mean that it is a service game akin to the likes of Destiny or The Division. Talking to IGN, Outriders’ creative director Bartosz Kmita confirmed that “It's online only. We have a lot of things in the backend so you have to be connected to the internet to be able to play.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/28/outriders-preview"] Outriders is a co-op shooter, but can be played solo, despite the requirement for an internet connection. The always online nature may have players questioning if Outriders is a service game, but Kmita emphasises that’s not the case. “We wanted to release the game as a complete product, so the story, the endgame, everything is in the box when you buy it,” he states. “We are not chopping the content we have created to release it month by month, we are giving all what we have created on day one. It’s all that we think is necessary to have a complete experience with Outriders.” That also means that the microtransactions that you’d associate with service games won’t be present in Outriders. “The bad things that are sometimes connected to games as a service, like loot boxes or any pay to win mechanics, we are against them,” says Kmita. “So we're not using them at all in our game.” [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=outriders-first-screenshots&captions=true"] But the ‘whole product’ approach doesn’t mean that developer People Can Fly will not be supporting Outriders after launch. “You can think of it as a more old school approach like the Diablo games, where you get the more or less finished product and then a big expansion from time to time that expands the whole game and whole universe,” explains Kmita. “Not that every week they add two additional items or small things, or they force you to do some activities to unlock some other things.

Outriders Is a Looter-Shooter With Super Soldier Serum

3 years 11 months ago
Outriders has the best abilities that I’ve ever used in a looter-shooter. It’s a power trip approach to supernatural skills unlike anything I’ve played in the genre. Spectral blades reduce time-slowed enemies to skeletons and entrail ribbons, while whips of flame draw unlucky victims close before roasting them to ashes. Bullets are caught mid-air, as if manipulated by The Matrix’s Neo, and hurled back at their owners. These powers make you feel like a super soldier that attended magic school. A recent hands-on with Outriders provided me with almost unlimited access to this outrageous buffet of powers, and each new skill sampled felt as exciting as the last. But while acting as an extensive combat showcase, the demonstration offered little to do outside of a couple of linear, bare-bones quests. It’s left me concerned as to what kind of a game Outriders will turn out to be beyond the perimeter of its great and gory killboxes. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/28/outriders-preview"] Developer People Can Fly deserves praise for how it has made abilities the core component of the combat loop. In games like Borderlands, Destiny, and The Division, your character’s skills are the punctuation that divide lengthy gunplay sentences. In Outriders, the abilities are the sentences; thanks to generously short cooldowns you’ll be engulfing enemies in flames or impaling them with stalagmites every few seconds. While gunplay doesn’t hold up to the refined standards of its peers, the lack of punch from Outriders’ weapons is more than compensated for by the frequent barrage of gory spectacle. The closest point of comparison is Diablo, in both the excessiveness of the abilities’ visual effects and how they form the backbone of every encounter. Also akin to Diablo is how each of Outriders’ classes feels wholly distinct, rather than variations of a standard soldier template.

Captain Price returns in season four of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

3 years 11 months ago

Activision has air-dropped a fresh trailer for the next season of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and its sister title Call of Duty: Warzone. Focusing on the ongoing CoD narrative, which runs across both titles, the trailer officially announces the return of one of the franchise's most popular characters: Captain John Price.

Debuting in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Captain Price becomes an anchor of sorts, guiding the player characters through numerous intense firefights and Black Ops. Seemingly killed at the game's end, Price would go on to become a figurehead for the Modern Warfare sub-series, known for his gruff British manner, fearlessness in combat, and ruthless desire to "get the job done," no matter the cost.

Blizzard is holding a mini-BlizzCon stream for World of Warcraft on June 9

3 years 11 months ago

[Update: Blizzard has postponed the June 9 World of Warcraft: Shadowlands stream until a later date. "More important voices than ours need to be heard, and now is the time to listen," the company said.]

Although the inevitable news came recently that BlizzCon 2020 was canceled, Blizzard, like many other publishers, is planning on going with the online event route. That "tour" starts as early as next month.

Announced by way of their official blog, Blizzard will be holding a special World of Warcraft: Shadowlands presentation on June 9 at 9AM PT on both Twitch and YouTube. As is customary, Executive Producer John Hight and Game Director Ion Hazzikostas will be running the stream, guiding players through whatever new features or changes will be revealed.

As a reminder, there's still a lot of unanswered information on Shadowlands. The game is set for a "quarter four" release, with no precise date etched in stone. The stream could provide us with some semblance of a tighter window, or possibly announce a delay related to circumstances relating to the global pandemic.

People Can Fly's Outriders will not include Denuvo or microtransactions

3 years 11 months ago

Outriders, the upcoming third-person shooter from People Can Fly and Square Enix, has been flying a bit under the radar as of recent with more pressing titles hogging what little spotlight there is today. But for anyone with even the slightest interest in the game, today was a good day as the developers launched the first of what will be several broadcasts showing off the gameplay, graphics, customization options, and more. This includes a deep dive look at the Trickster class, though I'm far more curious about the Pyromancer that'll be covered in the next video presentation.

The 26-minute broadcast can be seen in its entirety below, but my favorite part is at the end where the developers offer very simple answers to very simple questions. People Can Fly's community manager Robbie Palmer confirmed Outriders is not a "games as a service" title and will be "a complete experience right outside of the box." He also confirmed it will feature neither Denuvo nor microtransactions. Let's hope that remains true even after the game releases, which sadly isn't always the case these days.

Nintendo Download: Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition

3 years 11 months ago

Even though the marquee Switch games this week are mostly ports, it's still a huge moment for the eShop.

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is out, bringing the JRPG classic to its third platform in roughly a decade (following the Wii and New 3DS). 2K is also releasing a trio of SKUs this week, including the BioShock Collection (all three games plus DLC), the Borderlands Legendary Collection (1+2+Pre-Sequel) and XCOM 2 (with DLC). You can read more about the 2K games here

If you aren't yet satisfied, there's Shantae and the Seven Sirens, as well as Liberated: not to mention all of the releases below. It's a packed week! For now, I can heartily recommend Xenoblade.

Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions’ Rikka Takanashi Is the Best Anime Girl

3 years 11 months ago

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the first season of Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions. It also contains the word kawaii on 5 different occasions. I counted.

Earlier this year, the Twinfinite editors revealed the results of our top 15 best games of the decade.

It was truly an epic undertaking, and I highly recommend you take a look if you haven’t already. You may notice however, that I did not contribute with my thoughts and opinions (and childish humor).

The reason may appear to be as simple as my position among the staff here — I’m kind of like Twinfinite’s version of Rob Ford — but at long last, I can reveal that the true meaning behind my absence was because I was crafting a ranking of my own. One so momentous and meticulous, it comes almost halfway into 2020.

I’ve been diligently researching who is the best anime girl of the past decade, and indeed, throughout all of history. I didn’t tell anyone else that I was working on such an ambitious project, and I suppose that means that this couldn’t be considered ‘official’… but you know what? Facts are facts, I’m going to print with this immediately (plus I have to make sure Giuseppe doesn’t find out, he knows too much).

So here it is, guys: Rikka Takanashi of Love, Chunibyo and Other Delusions is the best anime girl of them all. You probably worked that out after you read the headline and saw the picture of Rikka above. But maybe you didn’t.

Switch Isn't The Best Way To Play Five Nights At Freddy's: Help Wanted

3 years 11 months ago

I’m one of those people who can’t do VR. Maybe I haven’t found the right console to play on, or the little balance-regulating nub in my brain is too sensitive, but VR makes me puke. So when Steel Wool Games announced a Switch port of VR game Five Nights At Freddy’s: Help Wanted, I was excited to check out the game in…

Apex Legends Season 5 Has Been The Best Yet For The Battle Royale

3 years 11 months ago

Apex Legends has been steadily getting better and better with each new season, and with the latest content in Season 5, EA says it's experiencing the best uptake from a season launch yet.

EA states in a press release that Season 5 of Apex Legends has encouraged lots of new players to join in, with many more choosing to stick around than in the past. Season 5 introduced a new character, Loba, and made changes to the map, including the destruction of Skull Town on King's Canyon. The ongoing expansion of the game's lore is also allowing developer Respawn to experiment with new ways to tease upcoming content, with the "Stories from the Outlands" series of shorts helping to introduce new combatants to the game.

Season 5 also introduced Quests--a feature which Respawn didn't think possible back when they launched Apex Legends' first season. We spoke to game director Chad Greiner about this evolution, where he explained that Respawn continually keeps learning from previous seasons while trying to shake things up with each new one.

Summer Game Fest Teases News About Consoles Announcements And More

3 years 11 months ago

Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest showcase is now teasing some sort of "console announcements" that will take place sometime in the near future.

In partnering with Twitch, the Summer Game Fest posted a lengthy blog about some of the news viewers can expect throughout the summer. SGF simply said that some console announcements are coming but is keeping whatever this information is close to its chest for the time being.

The Summer Game Fest is slated to run from May to August, with several livestreams happening over the course of the next four months. A look at the schedule shows that none of the announced streams have anything to do with the next-generation systems, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection currently free on the Epic Games Store

3 years 11 months ago

Welcome, freebie fans, to another instalment of Oh Look, More Free Games to Get on the Epic Store!, which, granted, isn't the snappiest of titles, but it gets the job done. And, this week, the aforementioned games temporarily discounted to zero pence in a grasp for your ongoing consumer loyalty are Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and Sludge Life.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, as its name vaguely implies, bundles up a quivering duo of titles from Gearbox's comedic first-person loot-and-shooter series. And, as a result, you'll be able to add Borderlands 2 and all its DLC, plus Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, to your Epic library once you muster the mouse energy required to click the relevant button.

It's certainly not an offer to scoff at, with Borderlands 2 in particular nailing its mix of chaotically refined shooter action and winningly daffy presentation. The Pre-Sequel, however, while largely more of the same, didn't quite manage to make as much of an impact on release.

Darkest Dungeon's free Butcher's Circus PvP DLC out now on Steam

3 years 11 months ago

Back in April, developer Red Hook Studios announced it was working on a free PvP mode for its deliciously punishing Lovecraftian strategy RPG, Darkest Dungeon. And now, two months on, Butcher's Circus, as the new DLC is known, is available to download on Steam.

Butcher's Circus is, of course, a rather dramatic departure for Darkest Dungeon; since the game's release in 2016, its punishing expeditions to the shadowy antediluvian corners of its ancient hamlet - requiring players to safely shepherd their party of broken heroes through sanity-shattering horrors - have remained staunchly solo endeavours. Now, however, there's a new multiplayer twist to that rock-solid core.

Red Hook's latest slab of DLC adds the new Butcher's Circus location to Darkest Dungeon's gloomy hamlet, and those brave enough to enter its "weathered and bloodstained pavilion tent", can embark on PvP arena battles against friends and strangers.

EA Renews Partnership With NFL to Continue Developing Football Sims

3 years 11 months ago
EA has announced that it has renewed its partnership with the NFL and the NFL Players Association ensuring several more years of Madden NFL games from EA Sports. According to a press release, the multi-year renewal of the partnership means more football simulation games from EA, as well as “additional, innovative ways to play through new genres, expanded esports programs, arcade-style and enhance mobile experiences, and more, across platforms.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/05/07/madden-nfl-21-next-gen-announcement-trailer"] This means that, for the next couple of years, EA Sports will be the home of authentic football sims. 2K Games recently signed a deal to bring back NFL 2K, but those are specifically non-simulation games and don’t directly compete with EA Madden. Another focus in the renewed partnership is on international growth. EA will work with the NFL and NFLPA to deliver real-world NFL experiences to share worldwide. EA has found particular success with its online offerings like Ultimate Teams, which allow players to create and collect virtual dream teams. Ultimate Teams are also available for other EA Sports titles like FIFA. EA recently announced Madden NFL 21, the first EA Madden game for next-gen systems. Half-Life: Alyx's firewater sloshes around real nice now

3 years 11 months ago

Half-Life: Alyx is full of a million tiny little touches that make it a splendidly neat VR game. You can wear a bucket on your head and it protects you from Barnacles. There's a fully-functioning piano in a hotel lobby. It's all a bunch of stuff that's easy to miss but makes this world feel authentic.

Valve just released a new Half-Life: Alyx update that comes with an especially important innovation: Booze convincingly sloshes around inside bottles. Visual effects developer Matthew Wilde took to Twitter to show off his pet project, saying that he spent a lot of the past two months at home working on "boozy liquid shader." Here it is in action:
