Darkborn Development on Ice as The Outsiders Shift to New Project

3 years 11 months ago

Swedish developer The Outsiders has today confirmed that its anticipated supernatural first-person RPG Darkborn is no longer being worked on. In a message today published on Twitter, the team explained that despite having spent four years making the game, it regrettably made the decision to halt the project and move on.

In its stead, The Outsiders is working on “something new” that the team apparently “really loves.” No word on anything more other than that, though.

Darkborn started life as Archenemy, then Project Wight, before finally settling on its name. A lengthy 16-minute gameplay demonstration was released this time last year, showcasing a grim medieval setting where Vikings were murdered by a grizzly monster controlled by the player. An array of special abilities centered around stealth-action were showcased, including wall running, enhanced vision, and takedowns.

Darkborn is a concept that certainly appeared to hold a lot of promise, so it’s a shame to hear it’s on hold. Still, The Outsiders leaves the door open for a return to development on the game in its message today, suggesting that Darkborn may not be entirely out for the count just yet.

You can watch Darkborn’s 16-minute demo below.

Pokemon Snap

Pokemon Snap

Pokemon Snap was such a simple concept back in the Nintendo 64 days. There’s 151 Pokemon out there in the wild. Go out and snap some photos of all of them.

It could take skilled players only an afternoon to snap them all but longevity wasn’t the appeal. Pokemon Snap was incredibly immersive and seeing Pokemon move and play in their natural habitat was something that we’ve never seen before.

A new updated version of Pokemon Snap would have so much potential. For starters, there’s way more Pokemon now so there’s obviously a lot of room to build on the original game in terms of scope.

Obviously a lot has changed in between the Nintendo 64 and the Nintendo Switch, so a new game could leverage modern features like more a complex AI and environments to keep gameplay varied, multiplayer competitions to see who can snap the better photos, and social elements that let you share your best photos.

Companies love finding ways for their game to get buzz on social media and Pokemon Snap could be a home run on that front.

Fallout 76 weapons: where to find the bow in Wastelanders

3 years 11 months ago

Fallout 76 weapons

Fallout 76 has more stuff trying to kill you than ever before. It’s not just the local mutated fauna as other players are likely to shoot first. You’ll need good weapons to defend yourself: melee weapons, ranged weapons, maybe an explosive or two. Perhaps the only way to get an enemy off your back for good is to make them eat a Fat Man nuke.

Playstyle Royale: you must never leave your helicopter in COD Warzone

3 years 11 months ago

Today on Playstyle Royale, the series where I head into a battle royale game and try to win my chicken dinner while adhering to arbitrary rules, I’m joined by esteemed guest Nate Crowley. We’re going to drop into Call Of Duty: Warzone, make a beeline for a helicopter, and then never leave it. We’ll be stuck with whatever gear we’ve scrounged at the point when we climb inside, but I’ve little doubt that we will prove victorious regardless. I am very good at helicopters.

Destiny 2 has tweaked Hard Light, the disco-spamming gun that's dominated PvP

3 years 11 months ago

If you’ve played Destiny 2 PvP this season, you have almost certainly been cut down by Hard Light. And then again. And again. The Exotic auto rifle became real strong after buffs this season, and has been statistically the most-used gun in Crucible. It’s a recognisable problem too, because it spits colourful lasers bouncing off walls and all over – not a subtle gun. Thankfully, Bungie last night tweaked this superweapon in a little hotfix patch. Initial reports are that it’s still good, just not monstrous. Nice.

These costumes can be worn while exploring ScareScraper mode, and come complete with themed ghosts.

Meanwhile, over in ScreamPark, there are three new multiplayer games to enjoy with your buddies. Intel announces specs and features of 10th-gen Comet Lake desktop CPUs

3 years 11 months ago

Intel officially announced its 10th-generation Core desktop processors today, from the $122 Core i3 10100 all the way up to the $488 Core i9 10900K. Like its Comet Lake H mobile processors, announced in early April, the big focus here is on single-core performance through frequency gains - with several models pushing past 5GHz and the flagship model hitting 5.3GHz - but there are also higher core and thread counts for many models. Intel also detailed some nice feature additions for enthusiasts and overclockers which look promising - but will it be enough to reverse the trend towards AMD Ryzen for gamers and content creators? Here's what you need to know about Comet Lake on desktop.

First, let's take a look at the full Comet Lake Core lineup. We're seeing faster frequencies more or less across the board compared to the Coffee Lake refresh of 2019, but there are also some interesting design changes to note.

Core i9 processors now have ten hyper-threaded cores, up from eight last gen, while Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 keep their ninth-gen core counts (four, six and eight, respectively) but gain hyper-threading. Finally, the tray prices here are exactly the same as last-gen, which hopefully will translate into similar prices at retail despite the current human malware situation.

Meet the Elite Dangerous players helping others beat the grind during lockdown

3 years 11 months ago

The current coronavirus pandemic, and the extended lockdowns faced by communities across the globe, have left a lot of people with a lot of time to play a lot of games. Some are using that time to build capitalist empires, some are replicating real-life hangouts to facilitate virtual reunions with their much-missed friends, and others are using the time to spread a little bit of human kindness, in a bid to alleviate some of the stresses of isolation, in any way they can.

One such merry band of joy bringers is the East India Company Gaming, a close-knit group of Elite Dangerous players founded on "principles of tolerance and helping others". Its members spend their time engaging in a broad array of activities across the galaxy, but their most notable endeavour is the delivery of rare and mineable commodities to help others mitigate the arduous grind of Engineer-based ship improvements.

It's a trading service the group (whose name makes a certain thematic sense, given its alignment to Elite's Empire faction) has been providing in exchange for select in-game resources since 2017 - but in the spirit of giving that's been reflected across many gaming communities during the coronavirus outbreak, it's currently waiving that fee.

Xbox Game Pass: Microsoft Shares New Statistics About How It's Doing

3 years 11 months ago

After Microsoft announced a new subscriber milestone for Xbox Game Pass--10 million subscribers so far--the company has shared even more details on how the subscription service is progressing.

In short, Microsoft's data shows that Xbox Game Pass users are making more (virtual) friends, playing more games, and playing titles they might not have otherwise checked out.

Xbox Game Pass users have added more than 23 million friends on Xbox Live since March, which represents a 70 percent growth in new friends, according to Microsoft. In terms of gaming, subscribers are "playing twice as much," though the company did not say if this is based on total time or number of games played. Additionally, Microsoft said multiplayer gaming for subscribers is up 130 percent.

This 24-Inch Gaming Monitor Is Just $250 In Today's Deal Of The Day; Plus, More PC Gear On Sale

3 years 11 months ago

PC gaming gives players the opportunity for ultra-high refresh rates that exceed the 60 frames per second most console games strive to hit. And while your gaming PC may be powerful enough to reach those highs, you still need a monitor with support for higher refresh rates. However, they can be quite pricey, which makes this one-day deal from Best Buy so exciting. The retailer has the Dell S2417DG 24-inch G-Sync gaming monitor for $250, down from $430. It comes with free shipping, and if you order now, it'll arrive as early as May 5-6.

The 24-inch Dell gaming monitor boasts a resolution of 2560x1440 and a refresh rate of 165Hz on top of its 1ms response time and G-Sync support. G-Sync is a technology that replaces V-Sync, an in-game setting that sacrifices performance for keeping your screen from tearing. This means you can enjoy variable frame rates that don't always match your display's refresh rate, tear-free.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions Trailer Reveals the New American Team

3 years 11 months ago

This time around the trailer likely won’t stimulate the fan’s nostalgia because it’s about the America Junior Youth team from the United States.

It did appear in previous games but looks like it’s getting a facelift for the big screen with new players. Hence, we meet the new goalkeeper Cheikh Azwan and the forward and captain Blake Martin, who are brand new characters like the team itself

You can watch the trailer below.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is currently developed by Tamsoft, and it will release for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC worldwide in 2020.

Protodroid DeLTA, a Mega Man X inspired platformer, hits Kickstarter

3 years 11 months ago

I'm a simple man: I hear the phrase "Mega Man" and I come running.

While scores of developers have followed in the footsteps of the retro "classic" Mega Man series with fan projects and 2D platformers, here comes a game that seeks to replicate the world of Mega Man X.

The project, which just hit Kickstarter this week, is called Protodroid DeLTA. Described as a "3D action-platformer," it's goal is to "successfully translate the fast & fluid 2D gameplay of the X series into 3D." Based on the footage and character designs so far I'd say that it's on the right track, and then some.

What's amazing is that the lion's share of this project is being done by a solo dev (with contractors for voice work, 3D models, musicians and 2D illustrators) and family man named Adam Kareem. Kareem's past projects include fan games like Sonic Explorers, Mega Man Legends 1.5 and Mega Man X & Zero: Training Missions, as well as and original work called Tuff Stuff, which is inspired by Ape Escape. Kareem calls Protodroid DeLTA a passion project, and it shows.

Right now the project is seeking a modest $20,000 (game dev is expensive!) and has over a month to go. If everything goes according to plan, Protodroid DeLTA will arrive in November of 2021, and the lowest tier that grants a copy of the game is $15. If you don't want to pledge, you can also wishlist the game on Steam.

Darkborn development put on hold, dev promises something new

3 years 11 months ago

Stockholm-based indie studio The Outsiders has announced its viking monster game Darkborn has been put on ice.

As explained on Twitter, the project had been in development for four years - and despite releasing a gameplay trailer in April last year, the team has decided to stop development.

"In spite of our best efforts to continue, ultimately we had to make the difficult decision to halt development on the project," The Outsiders said. "Perhaps one day we will return to it: we all hope so and genuinely appreciate the support of everyone who followed us over the years."

7 things I demand from Assassin's Creed Valhalla

3 years 11 months ago

I think we probably all have a game, be it franchised or not, that holds a special place in our heart. In my case, one of my ride or die games is historical stab-fest Assassin’s Creed. Every time a new one comes out, I will get it and play it to the (occasionally bitter) end.

I was overjoyed at the new life breathed into the series with Assassin’s Creed: Oranges. 2018’s Odyssey, featuring best woman in the entire world Kassandra, and all her giant pals, was even better. And so when Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was teased yesterday, you bet I sat and watched a man using Photoshop for 8 hours! So, my credentials as an AC fan established, here are my demands for Valhalla after watching the new cinematic trailer.
