Marvel’s Avengers Cinematic Trailer Builds Hype Ahead of Launch

3 years 8 months ago

The trailer roll-out for Marvel’s Avengers has been unrelenting these past few weeks. Just this month, Square Enix has dropped a launch trailer, a mechanics breakdown, and a reveal of PlayStation-exclusive perks that became the subject of discussion among fans for a while.

They’re even planning on showing off an additional playable character in the upcoming War Table stream on Sept. 1. That’s coming just before the game’s launch on Sept. 4. It seems a bit last-minute, but curious fans will no doubt tune in.

Today’s trailer for Marvel’s Avengers is taking a completely different approach to building hype ahead of the game’s release next month. This is a cinematic trailer that shows off the heroes’ abilities in a grand fashion.

Captain America, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow, Thor, Iron Man, and Hulk are taking on a ton of enemies at once in this one. It’s a bit reminiscent of the New York scene in the first Avengers movie, honestly.

Those who love that over-the-top action can watch the cinematic Marvel’s Avengers trailer below:

Netflix's live-action Resident Evil show is sending the 'Wesker kids' to New Raccoon City

3 years 8 months ago

Let me give you a second to process – and try to picture – that ridiculous headline.

On Twitter, Netflix shared a head-turning summary of its upcoming live-action, eight-episode Resident Evil series from writer Andrew Dabb (Supernatural), and, well, here goes: "When the Wesker kids move to New Raccoon City, the secrets they uncover might just be the end of everything."

With all of the lore and characters to draw from, this is an interesting choice, to say the least.

The Hollywood Reporter has more details about the series, including a few quotes from Dabb, who calls Resident Evil his "favorite game of all time" and says the season will "be complete with a lot of old friends, and some things (bloodthirsty, insane things) people have never seen before."

Resident Evil is said to span two time periods – one with Jade and Billie Wesker's family drama in New Raccoon City, and another, set 16 years later, with Jade now struggling in a mostly-infected world.

I'm along for this wild ride. I won't be able to look away.

Watchmen director Stephen Williams on uncovering the series’ real American hero story

Given the track record for comic book adaptations, Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series, an adaptation of the Alan Moore graphic novel, stood an equal chance of telling a ripping action-adventure story as it did ending up like so much space squid on a windshield. Wesker's kids will head up a new Resident Evil Netflix series

3 years 8 months ago

Videogames are television now. But while everything from Splinter Cell to Fallout is gunning for streaming gold following The Witcher‘s Cavill-shaped successes, Resident Evil probably makes more sense than most. With a long run of live-action films behind it, the horror series is now getting a Netflix original series, one that follows the plucky Wesker kids as they uncover the no-good rotten antics their dear old dad Albert’s been up to. Probably.

Control: AWE Expansion Review

3 years 8 months ago
In the lead up to playing the AWE expansion for Control, I did a full playthrough of 2010’s Alan Wake so I could pick up on and fully appreciate the references that Remedy was bound to pack in as it connected its two weird sci-fi universes. While the short and sweet AWE may not be the full “Alan Wake Experience” that long-term fans were hoping for, it thrills for large portions with its exhilarating combat and trademark peculiarities. With fun additions to Jesse Faden’s arsenal and a brand-new area of the Oldest House to explore, there’s a great time to be had with Control’s second expansion while it lasts and plenty of knowledge to gain for fans of both Alan Wake and Control alike. The mysterious disembodied voice of long-missing novelist Alan Wake leads Jesse to the Investigations Sector of the Oldest House and she soon discovers why: Dr Emil Hartman, the sinister psychiatrist from Alan Wake, is roaming the corridors of the sector -- but not like you’ve ever seen him before. He now cuts the figure of a gangly eldritch horror made up of the unenviable combo of being consumed by the darkness and corrupted by the Hiss. His mutated form very much echoes the distinctively horror-themed tones to this expansion, erring much closer to the eerie elements of Alan Wake than the core Control storyline ever did. These main missions tell a fairly straightforward tale over the course of about three hours, but it’s one that had me wanting to know which turn was going to be taken next, especially as someone who’s such a big fan of Alan Wake’s story. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=control-awe-dlc-screenshot&captions=true"] This isn’t to say that AWE isn’t for Control fans who haven’t played Alan Wake, though. Yes, it provides a satisfying amount of extra detail and context to those wanting more Alan Wake in their lives, but it does so without ever alienating those who aren’t familiar.

The original Division is the best Xbox has for September's Games with Gold

3 years 8 months ago

When news broke two weeks ago that Forza Horizon 3 would be delisted toward the end of September, I wondered whether it'd go out with one last hurrah as a closing time freebie in next month's Games with Gold. It wasn't meant to be, as Microsoft's instead giving out a different old game that has similarly been made redundant by newer entries in its series.

The Division is the biggest name in September's Games with Gold lineup, as Ubisoft's 2016 open-world RPG team shooter takes the spotlight. It's a fine enough game, but the sequel vastly improves upon the original in most areas. Also, Ubisoft sold The Division 2 for $3 earlier this year, so plenty of people have tried their hand at the newer of the games.

The rest of the list is less remarkable. The other Xbox One title is point-and-click adventure The Book of Unwritten Tales 2. As far as past-generation games go, Xbox 360's De Blob 2 and original Xbox's Armed and Dangerous are up for grabs. As always, those older games are playable on Xbox One through backward compatibility.

Here's the full rundown for Xbox's Games with Gold in September:

Podcast episode 107: the Dad Games special

3 years 8 months ago

A screenshot of Ocotdad and his wife from the game Octodad. He is an octopus in a poorly fitting blue suit, and she is a human woman.

This week the podcast truly is the daddy of all podcasts, as we decide to talk all things dad in games. This of course means we must first establish what a dad game is. Are we talking about games that dads will like, or games about dads? And what is the crossover between the two?

Eventually we settle on having a lovely chat about some of our favourite dads in games, including the sad murder dads, and the phenomenon that is developers growing up and having kids and therefore making entirely different games. I ask Nate, as the only dad amongst us, for his dad analysis of the game dads, and we have a lovely time. Plus, Matthew leads us into the Cavern Of Lies where he presents us with a cavalcade of game dads. But which ones are real and which are fake?

Eiyuden Chronicle by Suikoden Creators Gets New Trailer Ahead of Last 48-Hour Kickstarter Rush

3 years 8 months ago

Today Rabbit & Bear Studios launched a new trailer of its upcoming JRPG Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes.

The trailer provides a look at gameplay and recaps what was achieved so far with the Kickstarter campaign, including a metric ton of stretch goals between new characters, features, and minigames.

You can watch it below.

Incidentally, the game’s Kickstarter campaign has now passed $3.8 million, which means that the Theatre system announced yesterday has been unlocked

More goals have been teased for the last 48-hour rush including one titled “The Depths” at $4.25 million and several with no indicated amount including “On My Own Time,” “A New Style” (DLC), “A Good Offense, ” “State of Mind” (DLC) and a “Final Goal.”

We also get a message from Suikoden creator Yoshitaka Murayama.

“When we first set off down this path it was a new challenge for us. We knew so little about Kickstarter and of course in the back of our minds we had the anxiety of wondering if gamers really wanted something like this?

Alienware AW2521HFL review

3 years 8 months ago

A photo of the Alienware AW2521HFL monitor

The Alienware AW2521HFL is the latest version of Dell’s 240Hz gaming monitor, taking over from the excellent, if now slightly dated AW2518H. It’s a Freesync Premium screen at its core, but it’s also one of Nvidia’s fully certified [cms-block] as well, making it a great choice for AMD and Nvidia graphics card owners alike looking for smooth, tear-free gaming at high refresh rates. Is it a better buy than the excellent value AOC C27G2ZU, though? Let’s take a look.

Outriders: How Mods Change the Gameplay

3 years 8 months ago
Skill modifications are set to be a hugely important part of Outriders’ combat. They don’t just offer another layer of customisation; they can also provide fascinating abilities to build an entire character around. Unlike in traditional shooters, modifications in Outriders are not scopes, silencers, or larger magazines. Developer People Can Fly wants mods to be something players use as the basis for powerful combinations, rather than numerical stat boosts like increased rate-of-fire. While mods are applied to weapons and armour, they’re not tangible components, but abstract power-ups that closer resemble Diablo’s Skill Runes than The Division’s upgrades. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/08/27/outriders-how-mods-change-the-gameplay-ign-first"] As an example, lead game designer Piotr Nowakowski describes to me one of Outriders' area-of-effect mods. “There is a Winter Blast mod that, when I crit the enemy, makes it that all enemies around them are frozen,” he says. “I really like to play with that mod because I can follow it with a different mod that boosts the damage against frozen enemies. I like to combine that with Icebreaker, where every frozen enemy killed triggers an explosion. So if I do all that correctly in a big group of enemies, it starts a chain process.” But there's more to mods than just adding effects to skills; some can even provide a taste of another class entirely. “There is a mod where, when you kill an enemy, a Golem [a suit of rock armour] is put on you, even if you are not the Devastator,” reveals Nowakowski. Talking of Golems, there is another mod that can make bullets that strike the armour ricochet off and strike enemies, which turns this defensive skill into an offensive one. The breadth of mod designs seems admirably broad. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=outriders-ign-first&captions=true"] But how do you access these powerful upgrades?

Geoff Keighley Weighs in on PS5 and Xbox Series X

3 years 8 months ago
In the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, Geoff Keighley talked about the upcoming launch of the Xbox Series X and PS5, and how the philosophies of each platform impact their standing. Ryan McCaffrey sat down with Keighley to discuss a wide range of topics in the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered, including his friendship with Hideo Kojima, Keighley's storied history with awards shows, the cancellation of E3, what the 2020 Game Awards will be like, and much, much more. In terms of the positioning of the machines... they're going down different paths. "I think PlayStation is in a really strong position. I think [the] PS5 [is a] great machine... the controller, which I've got to play with, is really, really cool. An amazing lineup of first-party games. They're kind of running the same play that they've run before, and [it] worked really well for them. The games they showed in their lineup... the SSD stuff looks incredible. So I'm excited about that." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/11/playstation-5-reveal-reactions-breakdown-console-design-ps5-sequels-and-more"] "Xbox is playing a different game. I think the Game Pass stuff is a really compelling story for them... I think Xbox has a good story as well, and a different story than what Sony is approaching... I think Xbox has to really deliver the great first-party games.

Tell Me Why Review

3 years 8 months ago

There are no facts. First-hand accounts have an inherent subjectivity to them, people lie, and memories fade. All of this is what’s meant to make Tell Me Why so intriguing. But while the characters and world are brimming with charm, pulling the thread to reveal the secrets of this fictional Alaskan town’s not so mysterious murder proves to be the least compelling part of the whole adventure.

In Tell Me Why you switch between the perspectives of twins Alyson and Tyler Ronan after they’re reunited 10 years after their mother’s death. Over the course of 8.5 hours (spanning across three episodes), the two prepare to sell their childhood home, which proves to be both a physically and emotionally exhausting task. Despite being completely separate from the Life Is Strange universe, Tell Me Why soon veers into the supernatural in a similar way, primarily through Alyson and Tyler’s ability to talk telepathically and rewatch ghostly replays of key childhood memories together. Made up of golden light particles, the translucent look of these replays give them a mystical and transient feeling.

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=tell-me-why-official-screenshots&captions=true"]

Through these visions, you get to see more of the twins' past and sometimes “remember” details from key events so you can confront folks in town and get the answers you’re looking for. Similarly, chatting telepathically allows the two to strategize their next move, opening up more dialogue options or guiding the other through a task.

Tell Me Why's First Episode Is Too Real

3 years 8 months ago

In a way, the first episode of Tell Me Why wants to convince you that people aren’t as bad as you think. It’s a weird message for me, a trans man playing a video game, to hear—both video games and the people who surround them can be worse than I think, and I’m constantly braced for some trans joke or violent plotline.

Tell Me Why review - memory and identity converge in another taut young adult adventure

3 years 8 months ago

I don't know how they do it. Dontnod have real form making these intense, socio-political narrative games, where you simply walk around interacting with other characters and objects. Tell Me Why is another success.

This time, the story is about a set of young adult twins dealing with the fallout of a traumatic childhood incident. One of the siblings is close to completing their transition to male, and Dontnod is wonderfully deft and sensitive, simultaneously making this detail both central and peripheral to proceedings as you dive deeper into the narrative.

Tyler Ronan has returned to a sleepy Alaskan village, reuniting with his sister Alyson, after a decade in juvenile detention. Together again, the twins are determined to understand exactly what happened during their difficult and precarious childhood. This is complicated by the fact they both have different ideas about how to seek out the truth, especially as Alyson never stopped living close to the people who might have answers.

Epic Snuck One More Jab At Apple In Its Final Fortnite iPhone Update

3 years 8 months ago

Fortnite's Season 4 cross-collaboration event with Marvel kicks off today, but iPhone, iPad, and Mac players won't be able to join in on the fun due to the current legal dispute between Apple and Epic Games. However, while new seasonal updates won't be coming to the game on iOS, Epic did manage to sneak in one last bit of content, adding the art Tycoon character skin to the game.

The Tart Tycoon is Fortnite's representation of Apple and its monopoly, and was introduced in a commercial that satirized the 1984 Apple Macintosh personal computer advert that referenced George Orwell's novel set in a dystopian future. The advert then encouraged Fortnite players to protest against Apple and its store policies with the #FreeFortnite hashtag on social media.

A prize that players could obtain with very little effort through an in-game tournament, the reward was added as a small "adjustment" on iOS platforms. "We've deployed an adjustment on iOS and Google Play that will allow #FreeFortnite Cup winners to receive the Tart Tycoon Outfit alongside other platforms later this week," an Epic Games spokesperson explained on Reddit.

Carto is the cool puzzle exploration game your Switch deserves

3 years 8 months ago

Carto wasn't on our radar until the PC Gaming Show in June. But, once it showed up there, it was became a staple of the list of games we're keeping an eye on. This chill indie puzzle game is about exploring a world by flipping its pieces upside-down. It looks like the kind of thing you'd want to lose yourself in for an afternoon.

The first opportunity for that escapism comes in exactly two months. Publisher Humble Games has announced that Carto will launch on October 27. It's coming to PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.

If you need more convincing, check out the release date trailer that's embedded above. It's got all those cutesy wholesome vibes that your Switch craves. However, Carto also looks like it might have the puzzler chops to give your brain a bit of a workout. Just two more months until we find out if it lives up to those expectations.
