How To Win Any Argument About Next-Gen Consoles

3 years 7 months ago

This is my absolute favorite time of the console cycle: the time when everyone is talking about next-generation systems, but before anyone actually has them. This sweet spot means that lots of people have very strong opinions, but no solid hands-on facts to back them up – a magical combination that gives rise to countless online arguments.

If you get caught up in one of these “debates” (or if you actively seek them out like I do), you need the right syllogistic skills to score a win and leave your opponents humiliated and incorrect. All of these arguments basically go the exact same way when handled properly, so I’ve assembled the following responses that will help guide you to a decisive victory and all the internet accolades that entails.

Bloober Team's Blair Witch game getting the standalone VR treatment for Halloween

3 years 7 months ago

Layers of Fear and Observer developer Bloober Team has announced it'll be giving players the opportunity to stuff their faces right into the dank, haunted woods of its Blair Witch horror effort, when it comes to Oculus Quest on 29th October. And yes, you can still pet the dog.

Blair Witch released on PC and consoles last year, and saw Bloober taking its distinctive brand of surreal, spatially impossible horror deep into the Black Hills forest in Burkittsville, Maryland, where former police officer Ellis Lynch - and his dog Bullet - join the hunt for a missing boy.

The end result was effective, if rather uneven, with Bloober's gorgeously atmospheric, derangedly looping woodland set-pieces expertly capturing the sense of being lost, isolated, and exposed among the trees. Less captivating, however, was its rather trite handling of Lynch's backstory and floundering pace, particularly in its painfully protracted finale.

Mass Effect Dungeons & Dragons Homebrew Relieves Remaster Anticipation And Turian Withdrawl

With all of the Mass Effect trilogy remaster hype and Baldur's Gate 3 bringing that Dungeons & Dragons love front and center once more, we wanted to take a moment to point our readers in the direction of a really awesome homebrew that blends the best of both worlds. The Mass Effect Dungeons & Dragons homebrew gives us back that turian booty and blueberry love while also providing a balm to our pain of no Mass Effect news.

This homebrew allows Mass Effect and Dungeons & Dragons fan live out their N7 fantasies within a world that is fully fleshed out in the 5e platform.

"The Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game is about storytelling in worlds of swords and sorcery and Mass Effect 5e takes that storytelling to the stars," reads the official description of this particular homebrew. "Both shares elements with childhood games of make-believe. Like those games, D&D is driven by imagination. It's about picturing the alien landscape beneath the two-sunned sky and imagining how an N7 soldier might react to the challenges that scene presents."

Resident Evil movie reboot promises to be more Resident Evil this time

3 years 7 months ago

Another Resident Evil film is in the works – and this time, it might actually somewhat resemble the series it’s based on. That’s no shame on the W.S Anderson flicks, of course, that series very much growing into its own brand of action-horror pulp. But with more deets on the upcoming reboot arriving today, our next cinematic take on Capcom’s spook ’em up is bringing us all the way back to “a fateful night in Raccoon City in 1998.”

Star Wars: Squadrons Multiplayer Review

3 years 7 months ago

[Editor’s Note: This review is just for Star Wars: Squadrons’ PvP multiplayer. For our full thoughts on the campaign, read our Star Wars: Squadrons single-player review.]

[poilib element="accentDivider"]

While the immaculately detailed ship interiors and charming characters may have been what hooked me into the Star Wars: Squadrons campaign, its light but fun PvP multiplayer is exciting for a more unexpected reason: its terrain. The accessible but nuanced flight controls and systems management still stand strong, but facing off against human pilots shows just how much room there is for making tricky maneuvers around asteroids or through tight corridors. The letdown is that there isn’t more of it here in terms of modes, maps, or progression.

Squadrons has just two modes: Dogfight, which is a straight-up 5v5 slugfest where you race to 30 kills; and Fleet Battles, which instead gives each squad a large capital ship that must be dismantled and destroyed by the opposing team through a game of starship tug o’ war. Both share the same six maps, none of which alter a mode’s objective or general strategy but do vary in both gorgeous visuals and clever obstacle layouts. The exception there is Yavin, which might have the prettiest skyline of the bunch but pays for it by being a completely empty area with nothing to maneuver or hide behind, making it a total killjoy whenever it comes up in matchmaking.

Zelda Fans Are Going Crazy Over Young Purah in Hyrule Warriors

3 years 7 months ago

Earlier today Nintendo released a new trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, showing off two “new” characters for the first time. Fans were able to get a good peek at how Doctor Robbie and Purah from Breath of the Wild look like 100 years in the past.

Due to experimentation with anti-aging, Purah looks like a child in Breath of the Wild, but now she looks older and people have started to fall in love with her already. And how could you blame them? Purah is the cutest.

I especially adore her “I’m so cool pose” and honestly I’m going to choose her every time if she ends up as an actual playable character.

Enjoyable underground station management sim Overcrowd leaves Steam early access

3 years 7 months ago

Overcrowd: A Commute 'Em Up, SquarePlay Games' wonderfully compelling underground station management sim is, after around 15 months in Steam early access development, pulling up to the platform marked Version 1.0 for its full release today, 6th October.

On a basic level, Overcrowd sticks closely to the classic management sim formula; you'll build, research, and hire staff, keeping a watchful eye on budgets and an ear toward your customers' needs, so as to, in this case, create a thriving network of interconnected underground stations across the fictional sprawl of Lubdon Town.

I played Overcrowd a fair amount at its early access launch last year, but popped back for a proper go of its near-1.0 release this weekend, and while I haven't delved exhaustively into its depths yet (so can only vouch for its first few hours), I've had a thoroughly enjoyable time messing around in its engaging, beautifully presented sandbox.

That incredible Game Of Thrones board game is now on Steam

3 years 7 months ago

I’ve never really been into A Song Of Ice And Fire. Even before the internet collectively turned on the telly show in its final act, I couldn’t have told you what a Targaryen is. Even so, A Game Of Thrones: The Board Game is one of the best tabletop games I’ve ever played, its cardboard kingdoms a beloved backstabbing battleground during my uni days. Today, developers Dire Wolf Digital brought Fantasy Flight’s stellar tabletop tactics to PC – an adaptation of everything but the dagger held behind your best friend’s back.

Super Mario Bros. 35 Is the Battle Royale We Never Knew We Needed

3 years 7 months ago

Battle royales have been taking the gaming world by storm over the past few years. While many are centered around first- or third-person shooters, like Fortnite or Apex Legends, some companies have been thinking outside of the box to create new experiences within this genre.

Now, Nintendo is joining in the trend with its new game, Super Mario Bros. 35.

Super Mario Bros. 35 mixes the fun platforming of a 2D Mario game with the frantic rush of competing with a group of other players, and it works a lot better than you’d expect.

It’s a twist on the classic version of Super Mario Bros., and as the name suggests, 35 people play through levels simultaneously to try and be the last one surviving. Players must defeat enemies to earn extra time while collecting coins to exchange for power-ups.

It’s quite similar to Nintendo’s Tetris 99, in which players can attack each other in order to make it harder for them to survive. This is done by sending extra enemies to their levels.

Players drop out of the competition when they are defeated by an enemy or run out of time, and the last person remaining is declared the winner.

Astro's Playroom Comes Pre-installed on PS5, Takes Several Hours To Beat

3 years 7 months ago
Astro's Playroom

We enjoyed our time with PlayStation 4's Astro Bot Rescue Mission VR experience. It turns out that the next entry, Astro's Playroom, will be free and pre-installed on PlayStation 5. And that's not all – apparently, the upcoming platformer will take a few hours to beat.

According to a Famitsu interview, Astro's Playroom Creative Director Nicolas Doucet confirmed that the game would take "four to five hours to beat" and during this time there would be fun PlayStation references and homages that veterans of the console's extensive history would appreciate.

Astro's Playroom releases on November 12 alongside the PlayStation 5.

Why Crash Bandicoot 4 Uses Crash 1's World Map Design

3 years 7 months ago
Crash Bandicoot 4 makes the choice to return to a world map format closer to Crash Bandicoot 1 than the warp room setup of Crash 2 and 3. And while the team at Toys for Bob didn’t initially plan for it, the map actually provided the developers with a structure for how it wanted to introduce players to Crash 4’s story and difficulty. Speaking to IGN ahead of Crash 4’s launch, Toys for Bob studio co-head Paul Yan discussed the approach, as well as how the team set out to make the biggest Crash game ever. And initially, the team thought it would just continue the trend of Crash 3's warp room map, but realized how the style of Crash 1’s world map better suited their designs. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/10/01/crash-bandicoot-4-its-about-time-review"] “We wanted to make sure that it was a follow-up to Crash 3,” Yan said when the team approached the whole project. “Part of that was making a presumption, ‘Oh yeah. We'll just start off with the warp room format.’”

New Resident Evil movie reboot heading back to a "fateful night in Raccoon City in 1998"

3 years 7 months ago

Capcom's seminal survival horror series Resident Evil is heading back to the big screen, for the "beginning of a new universe inspired by storylines and characters" from the games.

Resident Evil's latest movie adaptation is currently in pre-production, and is being handled by Constantin Film (who steered Paul W. S. Anderson's exceedingly wonky Resident Evil ship) in collaboration with writer/director Johannes Roberts.

It'll take the form of an origin story, set on "a fateful night in Raccoon City in 1998", and promises "faithful ties" to Capcom's classic survival horror games. Although, let's be honest, you could cast the whole thing with talking animals and still manage to be entirely more faithful than Anderson's various Resident Evil efforts.
