Animal Crossing has a neat hidden joke about a Leonardo mystery that is still being debated

3 years 3 months ago

I have a Mona Lisa on my fridge. Not the Mona Lisa, just a Mona Lisa. This one is free from the smokey yellow varnish of the one in the Louvre, and so its colours shine. The sky behind the sitter is very blue, her face is very pale, and her sleeves are a sort of bright terracotta.

Those sleeves are a bit of a shock. The whole thing is a shock - even if you know it's coming. I first encountered this Mona Lisa downstairs at the Prado in Madrid a few years back, which is where I also picked up my fridge magnet. (I also have Las Meninas and a really brilliant El Greco - all told it's quite a fridge coming together.) I knew she was there - that is, I knew the Prado had its own Mona Lisa - but when I turned the corner and there she was, I froze all the same. Everybody passing by seemed to freeze. You, here? A reminder, if any were necessary, that there is more than one Mona Lisa. This one is widely understood to be a copy from Leonardo's workshop. No mystery here. But there are other Mona Lisas beyond the Prado's, too. And from there it gets complicated.

How complicated? I am not going to try and untangle it all here. This mystery - it is known as the Two-Mona Lisa Theory, and it's been knocking around for centuries - is one of the great unsolvable questions of art. It's muddled all the more, a riot of superpositions, because so many people think they have solved it in their own ways, and so many more think there is no mystery in the first place and we're all just picking away at nothing. Today I'm just going to tell you about yet another Mona Lisa, and yet another another Mona Lisa. This last one was offered to me for sale a week back, in Animal Crossing.

Review: The Climb 2

3 years 3 months ago

It's crazy to think that it's been nearly five years since The Climb!

That's about how long mainstream VR tech has been out, and thankfully, a handful of plucky studios are still plugging away at VR games. I mean, it's a niche at this point, but I'm thankful.

The Climb was a really fun effort from Crytek to help cement why VR gaming has a place in the industry. It offered a unique perspective on a harrowing activity, and used the VR medium to juice up the atmosphere on an already-firm climbing game foundation.

The Climb 2 builds further on that, and adds my most-requested feature into the mix: city maps.

Senran Kagura Returns With Hyperdimension Neptunia Crossover Game Announced for PS4

3 years 3 months ago

Today, during the Game Live Japan livestream Compile Heart presented a brand new game titled Senran Nin Nin Ninja Taisen Neptunia: Shojo-Tachi no Kyoen.

It translates into Senran Nin Nin Ninja Great War Neptunia: The Girls’ Shine. As you may have guessed, it’s a crossover between Marvelous’ Senran Kagura series and Compile Heart’s own Hypedimension Neptunia series.

It’s an action-JRPG featuring both 3D and 2D gameplay developed by Tamsoft and published by Compile Heart coming in 2021 (at least in Japan) exclusively for PS4.

Incidentally, this is the game teased as “Game e Ninja Neptune” all the way back in March 2019, two years ago.

A brand new protagonist named Yuki will also be introduced, voiced by Miku Itou, who previously voiced Kokoro Tsurumaki in BanG Dream! and Miku Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets.

The story is about a conflict among two ninja clans (obviously represented by the Neptunia and Senran Kagura girls), with a third clan of cyborg ninja coming to crash the party and attacking both camps. This marks the beginning of the great ninja war that will crown the strongest ninja school in the world.

Interestingly, a minigame featuring hot springs and peaches will be featured.

Below you can see the first trailer, the first gameplay, and a few presentation slides including screenshots.

Review: Taxi Chaos

3 years 3 months ago

Taxi Chaos is, for all intents and purposes, the spiritual successor to Sega's Crazy Taxi. It features convertible cabs driving around a city, picking up fares, and dropping them off as quickly and stylishly as possible. There's even the arrow at the top of the screen that guides players to their destinations. But like a lot of "spiritual successors," it comes nowhere near measuring up to its predecessor.

(Update) Outriders demo gets rebalanced after gear-farmers go HAM

3 years 3 months ago

[Update: People Can Fly has applied a second update to the Outriders demo in response to complaints about the first. As noted by Eurogamer, the Gauss boss chest will have a chance of dropping Legendary items once again. Ledge gear will remain absent from other chests.]

A lot of people have been enjoying the demo for People Can Fly's team-shooter Outriders, with an amazing two million players logging in to battle over the wastelands of the planet Enoch over, and over, and over again.

In fact, people have replayed the demo so many times, that they're starting to build up a worryingly powerful arsenal of weaponry - so much so that the developer is stepping in to alter the ease with which mercs can bag this devastating firepower. The concern is that this intense method of "farming" top level gear and weaponry will leave players absolutely loaded-for-bear once the main game finally hits, and will see them endlessly cream the opposition throughout the main campaign.

Speaking in an official Reddit post, People Can Fly noted that it is well in the player's right to play the demo as often as they want, bagging whatever goodies they can along the way, but that this might serve to hamper their enjoyment of the main game, which will allow players to carry over their inventory and levels from the demo edition.

Ant-Man Is the Latest Marvel Superhero to Join Fortnite

3 years 3 months ago
Ant-Man is the latest Marvel superhero to arrive in Fortnite, and the teases leading up to his arrival were a tiny bit hilarious. The Fortnite Team announced that Ant-Man will be arriving in the Item Shop alongside the Toothpick Pickaxe and Ant-Man's trusty steed, Ant-Tonio, as Back Bling. While Ant-Man joining Fortnite is a wonderful thing on its own, the teases leading up to his official announcement were just as great. Fortnite's Twitter shared three different images of small Ant-Man on other Marvel characters, including Cable, Blade, and Captain America.

The Community Spotlight 2021.03.06

3 years 3 months ago

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight and I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we loo back at the best user-created endeavors from the past week. For whatever reasons, there were no user reviews or lists to report from the community. As a result, I have cut the sections, but they will return in the future should any notable reviews or lists from community members pop up. Likewise, last week's Spotlight got absolutely slobberknockered by spambots. If you enjoy this feature please, show your support in the comments. I know a lot of people are frustrated about the spambot situation, but please remember to flag spam posts but DO NOT reply or comment in them. With all of that in mind, let's jump into the site-related housekeeping!

Thousands of World of Warcraft Classic players descended upon a single server to get a fresh levelling experience - and it was absolute chaos

3 years 3 months ago

Thousands of World of Warcraft Classic players last night descended upon a single server to get a fresh levelling experience - and it was absolute chaos.

Last week, I reported on how over one thousand World of Warcraft players had banded together to create a "fresh" experience in the Classic version of the famous MMO.

In the absence of incoming fresh servers with the launch of Burning Crusade Classic, those who only now fancy playing the famous MMO as it was in 2004 face starting on realms filled with maximum level players and botting.

Scarlet Nexus for PS5, Xbox Series X & More Gets New Screenshots Showing Powers & Characters in Action

3 years 3 months ago

Scarlet Nexus director Kenji Anabuki has revealed more screenshots and details about the upcoming cross-gen JRPG by Bandai Namco.

This time around we get to see more characters, including some interesting habits for a couple of them, who seem to relax in rather unique ways.

We also take a look at the powers that we’ll be able to wield in the game. Apparently, they can also be combined between those our characters have by default and those they can borrow from companions. For instance, you can combine Psychokinesis and Pyrokinesis to hurl a burning car in your enemies’ face.

Interestingly, we also learn that the Brain Crash ability is inspired by Yuri’s Fatal Strike from Tales of Vesperia.

You can check them all out below.

Watch Dogs Legion Online Co-Op Delayed on PC

3 years 3 months ago
Watch Dogs Legion's online co-op mode was set to launch on all platforms on March 9, 2021, but PC players will have to wait a bit longer due to a game crashing issue that has caused a new delay. Ubisoft shared the news on Twitter, saying that the PC version of this new mode can cause the game to crash for players with certain GPUs. The team is working on the fix "as quickly as possible" and will communicate the new date as soon as it can. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/22/watch-dogs-legion-online-co-op-preview"] While online co-op will still launch for PlayStation, Xbox, and Stadia on March 9, the raid-like Tactical Operations will now be released on March 23, 2021. Additionally, PS5 and PS4 players will have to deal with "limited in-game text chat" until March 23. We recently got to preview Watch Dogs Legion's online co-op modes, and said "The co-op missions remind me a lot of Assassin’s Creed Unity’s approach to friendly multiplayer, in that they are effectively identical to the fare you find in the main campaign, just redesigned with more participants in mind." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/22/watch-dogs-legion-online-co-op-preview"] In our Watch Dogs Legion review, we said its "bold use of roguelike mechanics in an open-world action game pays off in interesting ways, making this visit to near-future London feel more varied than the previous two games." Will GTA Online Get Cross-Play?

3 years 3 months ago

Grand Theft Auto Online has been hugely popular for Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two, but the game is missing one feature that has found its way into a lot of other multiplayer games: cross-play. If you're on Xbox One, you can only play with other Xbox One players, and the same goes for those on PC and PS4. But will GTA Online get cross-play, and if not, what reasons could be holding it back?

Why doesn't GTA Online have cross-play?

As we mentioned, as of now, GTA Online does not feature cross-play. Unlike games like Call of Duty: Warzone and Fortnite, you can't play with someone on another platform. Initially, this likely had to do with what was standard when the game launched in late 2013. Cross-play was basically unheard of, with platforms locked down. That didn't really change until 2018, which was well after GTA Online had come to current-gen systems and PC.

Will GTA Online ever get cross-play?

Rockstar has not announced this feature yet, but Grand Theft Auto 5 will be coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S later this year. If there were ever a time to add this feature--even if only for those two versions of the game--it would be during that development process.

One encouraging bit of news regarding this came from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, who stressed that his company doesn't just release simple ports, but instead tries to add something truly unique or meaningful when its games release on new platforms. Something like cross-play would certainly fit the bill, especially since it's now offering a standalone version of GTA Online that doesn't require Grand Theft Auto 5.

How Games Make It Fun To Be The Villain

3 years 3 months ago

Do you defuse the bomb and save Megaton? Or let it explode and take the town with it?

Fallout 3's big decision is memorable for its stark simplicity and big consequences. It should be an easy choice and it certainly seems open-and-shut on the surface. What monster would let a city, and all the people in it, burn? Well, the wages of sin is wealth. Defuse the bomb and you'll earn 300 caps and an apartment in Megaton. But let it explode and your haul increases to 1,000 caps, plus a luxe penthouse in Tenpenny Tower where you can kick your feet up.

Even with incentives, though...

"I could only bring myself to do it once," said Dan Shafer, associate professor of Film and Digital Media at Baylor University and author of Moral Choice in Video Games. "The feeling you get after blowing up the town for the evil Tenpenny is terrible. And, to make it worse, when you go back to the crater where Megaton once stood, you encounter ghouls, former townspeople who weren't killed in the blast, but were turned into mournful zombies. It is gut-wrenching."

If you choose to destroy Megaton, you'll watch it explode in a catastrophic nuclear explosion, resulting in a mushroom cloud rising over Fallout 3's Wasteland.
