Forget Breath of the Wild 2, It’s All About WarioWare: Get It Together

2 years 10 months ago

Much like the Xbox and Bethesda conference earlier this week, the Nintendo Direct managed to be another bright spot in an otherwise disappointing mix of presentations for E3 2021. The event featured just about everything fans could have hoped for, including info on remasters, new games, and expansions alike.

Arguably the biggest news came at the end of the show, as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 teaser gave us a glimpse at the skies of Hyrule while also confirming its 2022 release window. However, beautiful this brief trailer may have been, another title snuck its way into my game of show for the Direct: WarioWare: Get It Together

Ever since it was introduced on the Game Boy Advance back in 2003, the WarioWare series has been one of the most enjoyable franchises hidden amongst Nintendo’s large library of games. For those that have never had the privilege of playing any entries in this franchise, they basically boil down to a collection of microgames strung together in quick succession.

4 Unanswered Questions We Have After Square Enix’s E3 2021 Showcase

2 years 10 months ago

Another E3 is nearly in the books. Some of the biggest companies in the industry offered glimpses at what they’re prepping for release, and while this led to plenty of surprises and big moments, it has also led to questions about what wasn’t shown off. Such is the case with some of Square Enix’s properties, which has led to these three unanswered questions we have after Square Enix’s E3 2021 Showcase.

How Is Final Fantasy XVI Coming Along?

Square Enix’s E3 2021 Showcase Unanswered Questions

Square Unix's E3 2021 Press Conference Unanswered Questions

While we did get to see a new action-focused spin-off from the Final Fantasy series, the next core installment was more or less entirely absent from Square Enix’s E3 2021 showcase outside of a quick snip in a sizzle reel.

Fascinating RPG Wildermyth has launched out of early access

2 years 10 months ago

Sin thought you should play Wildermyth. In fact, she was quite insistent that you play the storytelling tactical RPG. Bluntly so, even. "Play Wildermyth, you cowards," she said. The big hook is that you play procedurally generated adventurers who develop into proper little paper people as their lives change and stories grow along the way. You're no coward, I know, but perhaps you didn't fancy buying it in early access? Good news: as of today, Wildermyth has hit version 1.0 and officially launched. Check it out in the launch trailer below.

Wii U photography horror Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water heading to Switch

2 years 10 months ago

Koei Tecmo is resurrecting its celebrated picture-snapping survival horror series, Project Zero, bringing its most recent instalment - Wii U's Maiden of Black Water - to Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, and PC later this year.

Released back in 2015, Maiden of Black Water is the fifth main entry in the Project Zero series (known as Fatal Frame in the US) and once again arms players with a magic camera - used to battle spirits by taking their picture, which is considerably more unnerving than it sounds.

Unfortunately, while Project Zero's first three entries are brilliant (and genuinely terrifying) survival horror offerings, Maiden of Black Water - set on the fictional Mount Hikami, known for its suicides and ghostly goings-on - is a bit of a dud.

Rare have started over on Everwild, rumours say

2 years 10 months ago

Rare were at Microsoft's E3 pressblast this weekend, but only to show off a Sea Of Thieves crossover with Pirates Of The Carribean. Certainly no sign of Everwild, the beautiful and mysterious game they announced back in 2019. Which was a shame. Rumours say that the English studio best known for the NES version of Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat have gone back to the drawing board for a big old rethink of Everwild. According to rumours, anyway.

Advance Wars 1 + 2 Are Being Remastered For Switch, Arriving In December

2 years 10 months ago

During today's Nintendo E3 Direct, Intelligent Systems' long-dormant  Advance Wars series returned, not with a new entry, but a remastered collection that brings back the first two entries in the series for Switch. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is slated to release on December 3 with pre-orders available now.

Advance Wars is a turn-based tactical combat game that pits the player's Orange Star Nation against various computer-controlled forces. Much like a game of chess, the positioning of different unit types is part of the strategy, and has you thinking numerous turns ahead. On some maps, victory is achieved by destroying all of the enemy's units, while other locations push you to complete objectives and secure locations.

Although the first Game Boy Advance games are returning (Advance Wars and Advance Wars: Black Hole Rising), they have been completely reimagined and rebuilt from the ground up. All of the units are now polygonal in design, and your commanding officers are brought to life with stylish hand-drawn animation.

Both of these games were beloved by players back in the day, and offer up a wealth of variety in the maps, units, and changing conditions (such as terrain and weather). If you don't want to take on computer-controlled armies, you can jump into multiplayer, which supports four-player skirmishes on dozens of maps.

Metroid Dread Gets Detailed Gameplay, Design Breakdown via Development History Video

2 years 10 months ago

Metroid Dread is still a few months out from its full release, but a new development history video shows why it’ll be well worth the wait for fans.

Streamed after the E3 2021 Nintendo Direct held on June 15, the video covers just about every design decision that went into the game. This includes the approach the developers took to creating the story, how the developers designed Samus’s traversal mechanics and abilities, the design inspiration and behaviors of her new primary enemies, and much more.

Things kick off with an explanation of the game’s story. Taking place after the events of Metroid Fusion, Metroid Dread will mark the end of the series’ focus on Metroids and a shift toward a new story arc. however, this doesn’t mean that players will need to catch up on every past title to enjoy the experience.

Instead, the development team has striven to make it a fun experience for Metroid fans of all experience levels. As such, they believe anyone can dive in and enjoy the story and gameplay.

On the game[play design front, Metroid Dread blends elements from past Metroid titles together for a new experience. Like in Fusion, Samus will need to flee from powerful enemies and try to avoid their detection. At the same time though, she’ll have access to most all of the combat-focused abilities seen in Metroid: Samus Returns, lending the game a more action-heavy feel during basic traversal segments.

As for the new primary enemies, there’s a decent info dump regarding their lore and inspirations. Known as E.M.M.I, these machines can detect the sounds Samus makes and will hunt her aggressively throughout areas once they spot her. While they can be taken down, it’ll tale a ton of firepower, making fightor flight a constant dillemma for players to ponder.

Each E.M.M.I. robot has its own area to patrol. They have a detection zone, which lets them see her movement and hear her sounds. If she doesn’t move or hides behind an object, she won’t be detected.
