Relayer Interview – Director Discusses The Ambitious Mecha Strategy JRPG For PS5 & PS4

2 years 10 months ago

Just a few weeks ago, Kadokawa Games finally unveiled Relayer, a mecha strategy simulation JRPG by the team that created God Wars.

The Tokyo-based developer has kept the project under wraps for a long time, so much so that its very nature was quite mysterious. A common misconception identified it as the console version of the mobile game Starly Girls, but it turned out to be its own new IP.

In January 2020, way before it received its official title and was still code-named “Project Stella,” I was allowed to see some early character design concepts and I immediately fell in love.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, I had a chat with Kadokawa Games president Yoshimi Yasuda, who is also directly at the helm of this project, exactly like he was for God Wars.

Giuseppe: When the game was originally announced a long time ago, it was billed as the console version of the mobile game Starly Girls. Yet, now that it has been re-revealed as Relayer, it seems to have mostly or entirely evolved into its own IP. Can you talk about that evolution?

Yoshimi Yasuda: I’d actually like to clarify that the development of the console version of the original mobile game is still an active project on its own. However, Relayer is actually a different project so this release is not related to Starly Girls. Relayer is the official name of the title which has been developed as “Project Stella”.

Xbox/Bethesda at E3 2021: a game-changer for Microsoft

2 years 10 months ago

The stars were aligned for Microsoft to deliver a phenomenal E3 2021 showcase and it's fair to say that Xbox and Bethesda delivered. The firm had already firmly established Game Pass as a service offering unbeatable value, but remarkably, the show did an impressive job of making the subscription seem almost indispensable. And in the process, Xbox went one stage further in comprehensively taking down the argument that its first-party line-up is lacking, while at the same time addressing the cross-gen controversy that made it feel like Microsoft wasn't fully committed to the concept of delivering games tailored to the strengths of the new wave of console and PC hardware. This one had it all - and perhaps it actually delivered too much, to the detriment of some of the games shown.

That's what we're discussing in the latest Digital Foundry Direct, where myself, John Linneman and Alex Battaglia pick out our highlights from the Xbox team's 90-minute showing and share some thoughts on how Microsoft chose to cram 30 games into what is a relatively short presentation and the extent to which it was successful. We kick off our show by sharing our thoughts on Forza Horizon 5 from Playground Games - a game that's cross-gen in nature but still manages to fully exercise the latest in console and PC hardware.

Investigate your neighbours in The Occupation devs' new mystery

2 years 10 months ago

After snooping around offices in The Occupation and memories in Ether One, developers White Paper Games will soon offer the opportunity to snoop around a neighbourhood . During E3 they announced Conway: Disappearance At Dahlia View, where we'll play a former detective in 1950s England who falls into spying on his neighbours after the disappearance of a young girl. The announcement trailer remind me a bit of Hitchcock's Rear Window, spying on people out his flat window. Have a look for yourself below.

Intel Core i5-11400F review

2 years 10 months ago

It's been a long while since there's been a truly great budget gaming CPU that's actually been available to buy. AMD's Ryzen 3 3300X filled that hole admirably when it first launched back in May last year, but the sheer popularity of that £115 / $120 CPU has meant that it's been out of stock almost ever since. Indeed, AMD still haven't released a Ryzen 5000 successor for it, and even Intel's 11th Gen Rocket Lake earlier in the year didn't yield any promising Core i3 candidates, either, with the chip maker stopping firm at the Core i5-11400 and i5-11400F, the latter of which is on test today.

The Core i5-11400F is fundamentally identical to the 11400 - it's just that the F model doesn't have any integrated graphics built-in. As such, you'll need to pair it with a graphics card if you want anything to appear on your monitor when you come to turn it on. Otherwise, they're exactly the same chip. And for lack of any other competition right now, this £150 / $230 CPU is probably the closest thing you'll get to a great budget gaming CPU in 2021.

Minds Beneath Us is a sci-fi thriller set in a dystopian city

2 years 10 months ago

Given how many cyberpunky games are around these days, it takes something particularly interesting in that style to stand out to me now. But Minds Beneath Us has really caught my eye. It's an upcoming sci-fi thriller set in a futuristic world where humans have been integrated with AI. It has cool skylines, excellent use of neon signs, and you play as a character who might occasionally turn into a murderous zombie-thing.

Our favourite games of E3 2021

2 years 10 months ago

A funny old E3 this year, for sure. But there were still plenty of great games to get all excited about.

Here are some of our personal favourites. And apologies for anything really obvious we've left out.

Every year we hope for a new Advance Wars, and every year we are disappointed. Except for this year, sort of, as it's announced that the Switch is getting a revamped version of the first two games' campaigns. Advance Wars 1 and 2 are classics of tactical playfulness, a tanky take on Chess filled with great characters and lovely little details. The new 3D art style is a little odd, but if it's another chance to mess around with the Pipe-runner, we'll take it. Now the wait is on for a new Codename: STEAM. Come on.

2 years 10 months ago

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! is a HD remaster of the cute anime visual novel (which is also a psychological horror game) coming out on June 30th. Unlike the old game, this one won't be free, but it's adding a bunch of new stuff that I'm sure will have plenty of spooks for us. It's bringing six new side stories, loads of new music, and a visual upgrade with higher-resolution artwork.

Fallout: London mod trailer reveals incredible post-apocalyptic cityscape

2 years 10 months ago

You've thought it, I've thought it, but the question of what London would look like in the Fallout universe has never truly been answered... until now.

A Fallout mod team is working on a huge project called Fallout: London, which is described as a "DLC-sized mod for Bethesda's Fallout 4". Although the team has been issuing updates on progress for some time, yesterday the group released a full reveal trailer, and the work done so far looks extremely impressive. Many of London's most iconic landmarks have been given a Fallout makeover - including Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral and even the BT Tower. Oh, and there's some extremely hammy commentary over the whole thing.

There are some really nice touches throughout the trailer: you can spot plenty of London buses, murky tube stations and even a classic London pub. I'm also a big fan of the Beefeater who's embraced a more Raider-inspired look. It feels like there are some nods to Britain's WWI and WWII past, with barrage balloons seen in the sky and soldiers camping out in trenches.

Have You Played... When The Past Was Around?

2 years 10 months ago

If I've learned one thing from Mojiken Studio's beautiful hand-drawn point and click puzzler When The Past Was Around, it's that I should never strike up a relationship with a violin-playing owl man unless I want my heart to get smashed into a thousand tiny pieces. Despite its bright and breezy art style, When The Past Was Around hits hard, wallopping your emotions with all the feels at every gosh-darned turn. To be honest, even if I wasn't getting all teary-eyed at Owl and Eda's blossoming romance, I'd probably be equally upset about having my lovely neat apartment trashed by an invisible, busy-body puzzle solver. I've only just finished unpacking those plants, goddamnit, no need to tip them all over the carpet as well.

3 Biggest Surprises From the Nintendo E3 Direct

2 years 10 months ago

Nintendo had a ton of news for us during their E3 Direct as always, and while most of them were games that we already knew of, there were still some surprise announcements, too. With that said, here are the three biggest surprises from the Nintendo E3 Direct this year.

Kazuya Is the New Smash Character

nintendo

We all knew that a new Smash character was likely going to be announced during the Direct, but it’s always so hard to predict who’s going to get added next and that’s part of the fun. Nintendo certainly didn’t disappoint, as they opened the show with a fantastic teaser of various existing Smash characters getting thrown into a chasm.

Kazuya Mishima was revealed as the edgy new Smash character, and he’s got a lot of moves if that trailer’s anything to go by. Sure, we already have a few fighting game characters in Smash, but it’ll be interesting to see how Tekken’s 3D fighting style is adapted into a largely 2D game.
