Why Mass Effect Andromeda Is A Better Game Than You Think

2 years 9 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

Mass Effect Andromeda took BioWare's space adventure to a brand new galaxy with a fresh protagonist, new alien races, and completely revamped gameplay mechanics. Ryder was just a kid trying to do what was right after the entire world collapsed around them, kind of figuring out things as they go. Unfortunately, the road leading up to launch was rough and an Early Access period, terrible resource allocation, and poor animations at release set the stage for a halt to Andromeda's growth. That being said, it will have some ties into the next Mass Effect, which we've broken down extensively in the past. With Mass Effect Legendary Edition opening up a ton of new players to the BioWare sci-fi RPG, we thought we'd break down some of the overlooked aspects of Andromeda and why you should give it a second chance.

Bridge-based strategy game Carrier Command 2 has been ordered to release in August

2 years 9 months ago

One of the reasons I’ve been excited about Carrier Command 2, Microprose's first-person bridge command simulator, is because it looked close to being finished when I first came across it. I wanted to play it, and I didn’t want to wait. And I don’t really need to, because it’s going to be coming out in August.

Free Content Update Coming to New Pokemon Snap, Adds New Areas and Pokemon

2 years 9 months ago

The official Pokemon YouTube channel has released a trailer showcasing a free content update that will soon be making its way to New Pokemon Snap. This update will add new three new areas to the game as well as a bunch of extra Pokemon to take photos of.

In the first half of the trailer, we get a montage of all of the greatest moments that are currently in the game, and the Pokemon Company thanks us for all of the memories we’ve created. Then, the trailer transitions to the upcoming content, and we get to see a glimpse of the new courses and Pokemon we can expect to encounter.

One of the new areas is the lush Mightywide River with both day and night cycles with Pokemon such as Tropius, Feraligatr, and Gyarados. Another new area within the nature park takes you through Secret Side Path and shrinks down your NEO-ONE vehicle to become incredibly tiny, so Pokemon like Shroomish seem huge in comparison.

The final new area seems like a canyon-type course called the Barren Badlands, where there are geysers and gas-spewing swamps. We see Pokemon like Swallot here.

We also spotted some additional popular Pokemon in the trailer such as Psyduck, Rockruff, and Snorlax in these new areas. It seems like there will be at least 20 new Pokemon added in total for us to take photographs of.

This content update for New Pokemon Snap will release in just a few days on August 3. It will be available to download for free. New Pokemon Snap is available for the Nintendo Switch right now, and you can read our review of the game right here.

You can watch the free content update trailer in its entirety below; see how many new Pokemon you can spot.

Free New Pokémon Snap Update Adds Three New Areas And Even More Pokémon To Discover

2 years 9 months ago

The Pokémon Company has just announced a free update for New Pokémon Snap, giving players even more areas to explore and pocket monsters to discover. For those anxious to dive back behind the camera's lens, the new update is slated to arrive on August 3. Here's what you need to know!

First things first: new stomping grounds. The coming update will add three new areas for Pokémon to explore, all with the continued Night and Day cycles. The first area is called the Secret Side Path, where players will actually shrink inside the NEO-ONE to explore this adventurous location. Since you and the NEO-ONE are smaller, all of the Pokémon in this area will look massive. So massive that you'll be able to hear their footsteps and their breathing for a more immersive exploratory experience.

The second new location is the Mightywide River, a water source that provides Belusylva Island with the necessary sustenance to thrive, allowing for a new location for Pokémon to trudge through and giving players more snapshot opportunities.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles Is a Fun Twist on the Sherlock Holmes Myth

2 years 9 months ago

Set in late 19th century Japan and Britain, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is so far removed from the main series in terms of time period that you’d be forgiven for excluding it from the series’ canon entirely. Along with introducing players to a whole new cast of characters, setting the games in a different time period also gives Capcom the creative leeway to experiment with new ideas and mechanics. And this is where Sherlock Holmes comes in. I mean, Herlock Sholmes.

While he is just a supporting character as Ryunosuke and Susato take the main stage, Herlock Sholmes plays an important part in all of your investigations throughout the course of Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. We often see him portrayed as a master of deduction in various other games and media, and that’s no different here. Except, while he may appear as an infallible galaxy brain-style thinker in other mediums, he’s been knocked down a peg or two in the Ace Attorney universe.

Whenever Herlock and Ryunosuke encounter a witness who’s clearly hiding something, the former immediately launches into a segment he calls the Logic and Reasoning Spectacular. During this comical segment, he flips his cap and snaps his fingers while presenting his theories and observations about said character, and draws conclusions from there.

The Ascent Review – Falling Short

2 years 9 months ago

The Ascent on PC

December 2020 brought with it one of the biggest disappointments in recent video game history. CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 promised us a futuristic, cyberpunk universe, teeming with things to see and do. Performance problems aside, it somewhat delivered on this vision, but it still left many with a bitter taste in their mouths. Seven months later and the dust has settled, and now it’s the turn of Neon Giant’s The Ascent to try its hand at satiating our cyberpunk cravings.

I’ll note now that, for the vast majority of my time with The Ascent, I played in single-player. The game does allow for co-op multiplayer both with friends and strangers online, but due to low player numbers during the review period, playing online multiplayer proved to be incredibly difficult. As such, the opinions and criticisms shared in this review are largely based on my time exploring Veles solo.

Taking place in the cyberpunk world of Veles, you’re an ‘indentured’ citizen. Essentially a slave to a corporation with little to no rights, you live your life down on the lower levels of this towering, layered world. The more affluent and ‘free’ people live at the top, and both your affluency and social standing are lower the further down you are. Corporations battle it out for control of technological assets across Veles, and it just so happens ‘The Ascent Group’ has recently shutdown for unknown reasons, putting the survival of your district at risk. With your (and many others’) life on the line, you embark on a new mission to find out what caused this sudden downfall.

The Ascent review - a breathtaking cyberpunk world in thrall to a tedious RPG-shooter

2 years 9 months ago

The Ascent teems. Its tiered alien megacity is one of the liveliest cyberpunk settings I've explored, always crawling with people and machines, whether you're massacring mutants in the sewers or gazing out from a boardroom window. Admittedly, it also teems with cliches and callouts to the usual canonical works: William Gibson's phrase "high tech, low life", which flickers on displays throughout like a sorcerer's incantation; Blade Runner's flourescent umbrella handles and melancholy synth score; pirouetting holostrippers from any number of seedy sci-fi saloons; an Oriental faction who worship honour and wield katanas. This is not one of your transgressive, norm-busting punk fictions - even Ruiner, its closest cousin, is a bolt from the blue by comparison. But what The Ascent's world lacks in imagination and bite it almost makes up for in scale and an exhaustive, toymaker's commitment to the fine details.

The Ascent review: a fun cyberpunk shooter that takes a while to warm up

2 years 9 months ago

Having previewed top-down cyberpunk shooty RPG The Ascent a little while back, I thought it was just all right at the time. But now that I've plugged myself into the mainframe for many hours, I see that it takes time for The Ascent's mechanical heart to get the blood pumping. After it's limbered up, this game is often a great time.

I say "often" because The Ascent can veer from extremely fun to extremely infuriating in a matter of nano-seconds. There's a lot to like here, but the way it's wired means it frequently trips itself up. Remain patient enough to untangle the mess, though, and you're in for a real RGB romp.

Destruction AllStars' July update fixes "ghost hits"

2 years 9 months ago

Destruction AllStars has received a new patch that makes a number of significant changes to the game.

The key change has been fixing so-called "ghost hits", where players feel like they lose vehicle health for no apparent reason. This tends to happen when other players are close by but appear to not make contact.

Developer Lucid Games believes this is caused by latency issues, and has "worked on a new set of parameters between the game and the servers which should help keep everyone in sync a bit better than it had previously".

Beta PS5 Update Adds M.2 SSD Support, 3D Audio Sound For TV Speakers, New Trophy Trackers, And More

2 years 9 months ago

Sony's first beta program for the PS5 begins today and brings with it a few key changes to this generation's system that are for the better. Including in the first update is the highly requested M.2 SSD slot as well as a few select UX enhancements, different customization options, and even a new Trophy tracker. The beta firmware update is available for a select group only, including PlayStation players from the United States, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The company notes in its latest update that players only used a supported M.2 to expand the PS5's storage. The requirements for that can be found here. For those that may be a little confused on what an M.2 SSD even is, Sony describes it as a device that is "a high-speed solid state drive medium that PS5 beta users can install to upgrade the storage capacity of their PS5 console or PS5 Digital Edition console (separate purchase required). We recommend verifying that you’ve received a beta invitation before purchasing a new M.2 SSD."

There is one thing to note, however, and that is that using the M.2 does have the potential to overheat a PS5. According to the requirement update, “Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink. You can attach one to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format.”

CrossCode’s A New Home DLC Is Releasing for Consoles in August

2 years 9 months ago

CrossCode is an indie RPG from Radical Fish Games and Deck13 Interactive. It was released on PC a few years back before making its way to consoles, and became an instant hit among those who gave it a shot. It takes place in the world of an MMORPG, and you’ll get to solve Zelda-style puzzles and fight enemies in a fast-paced action combat system.

The SNES style graphics are clean and really help to make the game pop, and the developers have just announced that its big DLC, titled A New Home, will be releasing for consoles on Aug. 5. You can check out the trailer down below.

The DLC was released for PC earlier this year, but console players will finally have a chance to check it out for themselves next week. Here are the key features:

  • The biggest dungeon in the history of CrossCode
  • New challenging enemies and bossfights

Spook snapper Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water will be haunting PC on October 28th

2 years 9 months ago

Fatal Frame’s premise has always tickled me. It’s a survival horror series where you fight off ghosts by taking their picture. It feels like a commentary on paparazzi and celebrities as the spirits gurn and whack away at the lens, but it probably isn’t. It’s been a console series for a while, but this year's E3 saw the announcement of a PC remaster of the Wii U’s Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water. Now we've finally got a release date for it: October 28th.

PlayStation 5 system beta now shows PS4 and PS5 versions of same game separately

2 years 9 months ago

Sony has deployed its first PlayStation 5 system software update for beta testers - including the ability to test M.2 SSD storage expansions, even if it sounds a little fiddly.

The update also adds a number of useful software features, and try a version of 3D Audio for any built-in TV speaker. According to Sony, players can measure the acoustics of their room using the DualSense microphone and choose a setting best suited to their surroundings.

Meanwhile, changes to the PS5 software itself mean beta testers will now be able to see the PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game separately on the Home screen and Game Library, with a game's tile labelled as the appropriate platform.

Award-winning Skyrim mod The Forgotten City launches as standalone game

2 years 9 months ago

It's not every day a mod wins a national writing award, but the quality of the story in Skyrim mod The Forgotten City was enough to see it pick up an Australian Writers' Guild Award back in 2016. The mod was downloaded over 3m times, and it's now taken on a new form, as the mod has been transformed into a standalone game.

The Forgotten City released yesterday on PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. It's been updated with professional voice acting, new gameplay mechanics, a new orchestral score and a significant overhaul of the original script. "If you liked the mod, you're going to love the standalone game," says the Steam description. "We've taken the best elements of the mod, re-written the script, which is now more than twice the length of the original at 80k+ words, and added plenty of exciting new twists, endings, and surprises."

In terms of gameplay, The Forgotten City is a murder mystery game set in a cursed Roman city where "if one person sins, everyone dies". Players must explore, question characters and exploit a time loop in order to solve the mystery. Combat is an option, but apparently this will only get you so far. There are moral dilemmas, multiple endings and opportunities to roleplay - all in a city filled with historically authentic Roman "art, architecture, costumes and customs".

Blizzard confirms former Warcraft boss fired for "misconduct in his treatment of other employees"

2 years 9 months ago

Former World of Warcraft senior creative director Alex Afrasiabi was fired last summer following an internal investigation, Activision Blizzard has now said.

Afrasiabi's departure had been known, though the details surrounding it - including new and disturbing details of a 2013 BlizzCon hotel room nicknamed the "Cosby suite" - have only now been publicly confirmed following a Kotaku report.

In a statement issued to Kotaku last night, an Activision Blizzard spokesperson revealed an internal investigation into the "Cosby Suite" had taken place in June 2020, following a separate investigation of Afrasiabi. As a result, Afrasiabi was "terminated... for his misconduct in his treatment of other employees".
