Valheim's Hearth and Home update will make it easier to store treasure

2 years 8 months ago

We've all been there - chests overflowing with gold, rubies on the floor, amber pearls somehow floating around in your food storage. And not a merchant in sight to help you spend it all. But the upcoming Hearth and Home update for Valheim should help with your treasure storage problems, as it's due to add a bunch of shiny new items to help you create your own bank vault.

As explained in a blog post, the developers at Iron Gate are now returning from their summer holidays to continue work on Hearth and Home, which is the first major update for Valheim since its launch. The team are apparently still on track to deliver the update "this very quarter", so we shouldn't have to wait much longer to see all the delicious goodies arriving in the patch (like Eyescream, Shocklate Smoothies and the ominously-named "wolf meats").

This update isn't just about food, however, and you'll soon be able to create your very own treasure trove. Coin stacks and coin piles will be added as items that can be crafted from your excess gold. If you don't want it all on display, you can store your bling in a special treasure chest. And if you want to secure all your earnings, you might want to craft the new iron gate.

Ubisoft Employees Say CEO Yves Guillemot "Sidelined" Demands In Activision Blizzard Open Letter

2 years 8 months ago

Earlier this week, over one thousand Ubisoft employees, both current and former, penned an open letter to executives, including CEO Yves Guillemot, demanding change in relation to workplace abuse allegations. The open letter was also drawn up in support of the Activision Blizzard walkout that occurred earlier this week in protest of a similar issue after details of an ongoing lawsuit against the company were made public. Now, the group behind the letter says that despite public statements being made by leadership, the reported behavior behind the scenes does not match what is being said on the surface.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles has some great musical off-cuts

2 years 8 months ago

It's been a great week for Ace Attorney fans. Not only has The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles finally arrived on Steam, giving us two brand new courtroom dramas to sink our teeth into, but there's also a rather brilliant double-pack deal going on right now that gets you The Great Ace Attorney and the Ace Attorney Trilogy for just £40, which is a mega saving considering both games currently sell for £30-odd apiece. If you've yet to experience Capcom's legal dramas and don't know where to start, I strongly suggest buying both.

It's also a good week for Ace Attorney music lovers, too. Capcom's had the soundtracks for both games on Spotify for a while now, but hidden away in Great Ace Attorney's special content menu is a treasure trove of unused music by composers Yasumasa Kitagawa and Hiromitsu Maeba. Accompanied by little notes describing their thought process and why they ultimately weren't selected, it's a great little peak behind the curtain as to what goes into making a rollicking Ace Attorney theme. And I wish more games did this as a rule, too.

Dissecting the Dead Space remake

2 years 8 months ago

During a livestream event in July 2021, EA revealed that (yes, we know it leaked prior but let's give them this one), years after the release of a doomed third outing in the series that was plagued by microtransactions and an ill-suited co-operative multiplayer element, a new Dead Space game is finally on the way. It's set to be a brand new remake of the much-loved original game, developed from scratch by Motive Studios (the team behind Star Wars: Squadrons), utilising the Frostbite Engine.

Unfortunately, all we've actually seen of the new Dead Space so far is a minute-long (and very dark) teaser trailer. But there is other info out there, if you know where to look. So, much like you would dissect a necromorph limb from limb, I've been scouring the internet for any new details on the remake I can get my claws on. I've compilled all my findings in video format, so click below to enjoy. Enjoy being a very loaded term when we're talking about watching gameplay footage of Dead Space, I know, but hey, let me have this one. It is Friday, after all.

A Mortal Kombat Trivia Quiz to Truly Test Your Might

2 years 8 months ago

Few video game franchises boast such a storied history as the iconic Mortal Kombat. From arcade domination and its role in kickstarting the ESRB regulatory board to conquering Hollywood’s big-screen not once but twice after reascending to the top of the video game charts with its most recent game, Mortal Kombat is as recognizable as Mario and Sonic — all without the mascot gimmick.

It’s no surprise, then, that Mortal Kombat’s enormous fanbase spans both the old and young generations. It’s the sort of game you can imagine a dad playing in his man cave, just as you can a group of teens playing in their college dorm rooms until the early hours of the morning.

But does age truly mean wisdom when it comes to testing your might? Here we’ve compiled a Mortal Kombat trivia quiz to settle the score — one that should challenge experts young and old, from the most skilled of the new generation to the seasoned veterans who have been locked in since the 1990s. Ready? Fight!

Sekiro speedrunner completes game blindfolded

2 years 8 months ago

In what appears to be a world first, a Twitch streamer has completed a blindfolded speedrun of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Yep, you read that right.

Earlier this week streamer Mitchriz completed Sekiro's Shura ending with a time of four hours, 35 minutes and 13 seconds, all while blindfolded. Here's a clip of the moment he completed the run - spoilers for the final boss, obviously:

It's worth watching the rest of the run, too, as it's fascinating to see how Mitchriz navigates Sekiro's world using only audio cues. (Rather conveniently, he also has an input overlay so you can see what he's doing with his mouse and keyboard.) On sections near cliff edges, Mitchriz has to carefully count down the seconds to measure how far he's walking in any one direction, often darting forwards to help control his movements. On some occasions Mitchriz slashes with a sword until he hits a wall, with the change in sound indicating his position. Grapple points seem to serve as useful tools for navigation, while enemy sounds and cutscenes also help telegraph his position.

Tribes of Midgard Review – Only Got 4 Minutes to Save the World

2 years 8 months ago

Tribes of Midgard on PC

After coming down from my month-long Valheim high, Tribes of Midgard seemed the perfect excuse to get lost in the incredible world of vikings once again, just from a slightly different perspective this time around.

Going into it, I wasn’t sure what to expect aside from a top-down, Diablo-like action game where I scavenge for resources, upgrade my gear, and fight cool bosses with friends. The game even starts you off at a stone circle spawn point when you load up the world. Just like Valheim, right? Except for one key difference: every second you spend in this world is crucial. Failure to understand that results in one of the most intense time crunches you’ll experience in a video game.

The mandatory tutorial that starts up when you boot up the game helps with introducing the basic mechanics, and it should all feel like familiar ground right from the get-go. You start with nothing on your person, and you can pick up flint and branches to craft axes, which then allow you to chop trees for wood and mine for ores like iron and silver. Gather enough of those, and you can start to craft weapons. And with weapons, you can fight enemies and animals for more materials to craft armor and other useful tools. You get the idea.

The path of progression is simple and straightforward enough, but Tribes of Midgard quickly throws a wrench into your well-laid plans by having Helthings invade your village every night. See, in the center of your village is the Seed of Yggdrasil, a legendary tree that you have to protect at all costs. Each night, a horde of Helthings will spawn outside your village and slowly make their way inside to try to attack it.

Neo: The World Ends With You: The Kotaku Review

2 years 8 months ago

When I’m playing Neo: The World Ends With You, I’m smiling. Whether I’m running Rindo Kanade and his pack of teen misfits through the streets of Shibuya battling monstrous living graffiti beasts and picking up the latest fashions, or just rifling through the menus fiddling with equipment loadouts, I’m doing it all…

Ubisoft CEO says "important progress" has been made after employees call for change

2 years 8 months ago

This week, hundreds of current and former Ubisoft staff signed an open letter in solidarity with Activision Blizzard employees, who took part in a walkout on Wednesday to protest an alleged culture of sexual harassment and discrimination at the Call Of Duty and World Of Warcraft developers. The letter criticises Ubisoft's own handling of abuse allegations, and calls for "real, fundamental changes" across the industry. Yesterday, CEO Yves Guillemot responded, saying the company has made "important progress over the past year", but acknowledges that "there is still more work to be done."

Five years on, we remember Pokémon Go's remarkable first summer

2 years 8 months ago

As part of Pokémon Go's fifth anniversary this month, we wanted to return to one of our favourite memories - that very first summer back in 2016, which saw the game become a global phenomenon overnight. It was one of those rare moments where it was the only thing anyone would be talking about - including us at Eurogamer.

Join us - news editor Tom Phillips, staff writer Chris Tapsell, guides writer Lottie Lynn and associate editor Matthew Reynolds - as we discuss our very first experiences, from getting our hands on it (easy to forget it came to Europe later!) to working out how to cover it on the site, and how the stripped back nature of the game meant everyone played it a little differently.

We also look back at some of our first articles on the game - from how it was bringing people together through bars and taxi services, Wes's take on the tabloid coverage, and how hidden stats meant it was actually as complex as the main series.

Steam’s new storage manager will show you where your game’s gigabytes are

2 years 8 months ago

When I think about it, I’ve probably spent more time looking at Steam than I’ve spent doing grown-up and useful things, like staring at my washing machine’s controls. And like someone who knows where all the bits are, I’ve gotten used to some design choices that could be better. I’ve been using external storage programs to deal with space issues across my multiple Steam installs, but Steam’s beta channel updated last night, bringing a new download manager and, importantly, a storage manager.

Ubisoft staff say company "continues to protect and promote known offenders and their allies"

2 years 8 months ago

"It's exhausting, frustrating and it's counter to the messaging they give us." That was the reaction of one Ubisoft developer to CEO Yves Guillemot's email to staff last night.

On Wednesday, nearly 500 current and former Ubisoft employees (we understand this figure is now over 1000) across 32 studios, signed an open letter in solidarity with Activision Blizzard staff following a recent lawsuit that called the World of Warcraft and Overwatch studio "a breeding ground for harassment and discrimination against women".

The letter slammed Ubisoft leadership's "empty promises" in response to allegations of "systemic discrimination, harassment and bullying" within the company, and proposed an industry wide collaboration to agree a set of "rules and processes for handling reports of these offences".

New FIFA 22 trailer gives us a first taste of gameplay

2 years 8 months ago

EA Sports has released a new trailer for FIFA 22.

It's mostly just marketing points, but it does provide the first brief snippets of gameplay throughout that give us an idea of how the game will look on PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series consoles.

The focal point of FIFA 22 is what EA calls HyperMotion Technology, which combines full-team mocap data and machine learning. The idea is to make player movement feel more fluid and natural. This has led to 4000 new animations in the game.

Dwarf Fortress’s new mouse menus make it so much easier to dig deeper

2 years 8 months ago

I have failed at creating a Dwarf Fortress many, many times. No tileset has managed to help me, no mod finally made it work. I just can’t get over the lack of a mouse-driven interface. And I won’t have to in the future. The latest development update for the Steam release of the detailed fantasy sim shows menus and mouse control in pefect harmony. Creator Tarn Adams casually flicks through screens without a wiki open on his other monitor, and finds things without phoning the Dwarf Fortress helpline and asking himself for help.
