How Psychonauts 2 turns the mind inside out

2 years 6 months ago

“It’s all in your head.” It’s a response that encapsulates all the condescension and ignorance surrounding mental health issues. And yet, in a way, it’s true. Subjective experience is an objective reality – that just so happens to be located and locked away in your head.

These individual realities can only be conveyed through language and other subjective means of communication, and more and more games are grasping this fact, turning inward to explore and map the inland empires of the mind. They have all the tools of the medium at their disposal to turn the invisible workings of the mind into landscapes of audio-visual and mechanical metaphors that can be explored and interacted with. At their best, they convey the dynamic and complex mechanisms of the psyche in a way that only this medium can.

DOOM Eternal’s 6.66 Update Deploys On Oct. 26; Adds Horde Mode & More

2 years 6 months ago

With the Halloween season in full swing, it seems like the perfect time for hellish first-person shooter, DOOM Eternal, to deploy its latest 6.66 update. Yes, publisher Bethesda Softworks and Texas-based studio id Software have announced they will release said update on Oct. 26.

Included in the free 6.66 patch is a Horde Mode, that pits you against endless waves of diabolical demons. In addition, the update will also introduce BATTLEMODE 2.0 and two new master levels.

If you fancy whetting your whistle before the mayhem begins in a few days, feel free to check out this freshly cut teaser trailer which showcases the new Horde mode in action:

While Horde modes are hardly a new thing (the first use of the moniker can be traced back to 2008’s Gears of Wars 2), it’s always nice to see some sort of survival mode included as it really does add a ton of replayability to a release. Plus, going up against DOOM’s signature hellish monstrosities in a wave-based format sounds like an easy win in our books.

New World’s Server Transfers Get Paused as Devs Patch Out New Gold Dupe Exploit

2 years 6 months ago

The server transfer drama of New World will never end, it seems. After player backlash regarding the lack of cross-region transfers, Amazon promised that the team would look into a solution. Then, intra-region transfers rolled out. However, a new issue has arisen as it looks like players have figured out a way to duplicate gold by making use of the server transfer feature.

This can be extremely harmful to the economy as New World is already experiencing a deflating economy where the value of gold is very high. As Amazon works on patching out the gold exploit and rolling back any duped gold on players who abused the system, however, it looks like it isn’t only the cheaters who are getting affected.

Other players have reported being affected by the bug, as some have made quest and loot progress on their character, logged out and back in again only to find that they’ve been rolled back, losing progress as a result. What’s most frustrating is that the server transfer feature has been disabled as the devs work on patching the exploit, which only means an even longer delay for those who were hoping to transfer over to another server to play with friends.

It’s kind of a mess overall, but hopefully things will settle down again once the patch has been deployed. New World is now available on PC.

Mythic Quest Gets Renewed for Seasons 3 & 4, Coming in 2022

2 years 6 months ago

Apple TV+ has been on a bit of a roll lately, especially with Ted Lasso picking up steam and snagging several awards at the Emmys, not to mention all the other nominations. And it looks like the company is going all-in on its two most successful shows, with the other one being the gaming-centric Mythic Quest.

Billed as a workplace sitcom with the gaming industry as its backdrop, Mythic Quest was definitely one of the surprise hits on Apple TV+, though I guess it shouldn’t really have been a surprise when you take into account that it was created and written by the Always Sunny and Community crew. The first two seasons had been consistently good, and while we did go for a bit without any news of a potential third season, it looks like Apple is putting those fears to rest.

NetEase Games Acquires Grasshopper Manufacture; Dedicated to Creating “Unique Console Games Together”

2 years 6 months ago

Grasshopper Manufacture is a developer known for putting out unique Japanese games including the beloved No More Heroes series, as well as Let It Die, the rogue-lite action RPG from Suda51. Prior to this new announcement, they’d been part of the GungHo Entertainment group, but it looks like all that is about to change as they’ve just announced a new partnership with NetEase Games.

Announced on their official site, NetEase has acquired Grasshopper Manufacture, and both parties are dedicated to “creating more unique console games together.” Grasshopper reassures fans that they’ll still have creative control over their own projects and will continue working on their unique brand of games just like they always have; the only difference is that they’ll receive support from NetEase in the form of funding and technical expertise.

“We will be responsible for the creativity and production of games to ensure that we are able to continue to maintain the consistent “Grasshopper Manufacture flavor” and game quality for which we are known. In addition, we will also receive strong support from the NetEase team composed of thousands of artists and technical experts in terms of game art and quality assurance. We will make the most of this support and strive to offer three even higher-quality “Grasshopper Manufacture Games” to all gamers in the next ten years.”

Amazon Bans New World Players for Exploiting a Gold Duplication Glitch

2 years 6 months ago

Amazon has announced that it will be taking measures to ban players who recently exploited a glitch in New World's 1.0.3 update, which brought server transfers to the game.

As reported by PCGamer, the "gold dupe" glitch allowed players to duplicate gold and items. How it works is that if players sent gold to another player and logged off and then logged back in again, the gold they traded beforehand would still be in their inventory. Of course, word of this glitch spread quickly.

Amazon addressed the glitch in a statement and said that "players found deliberately using this condition to gain advantage will be banned for exploiting. We will also remove items or gold received where appropriate."

Additionally, to curb this glitch further, players who exploited it may be temporarily unable to log in with their character. This should resolve itself within two hours, but if it lasts longer, Amazon says players should contact customer service.

This is a bit different from how EA handled its recent glitch with FIFA 22 Ultimate Team competitive mode. Like Amazon, EA issued temporary bans but didn't do anything to take away the rewards from those who already exploited the glitch.

Stardew Valley Creator's New Game Is About Making Chocolate With Ghosts

2 years 6 months ago

Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, maker of beloved Stardew Valley, has unveiled his sweet next title. Dubbed ConcernedApe's Haunted Chocolatier, the upcoming game tasks you with running a chocolate shop inside of a castle haunted by ghosts.

The announced trailer offers a vertical slice of what the game entails. It sports a similar presentation to Stardew Valley albeit with a far more fantastical vibe. In a blog outlining the game, Barone states that it's an RPG/Simulation and its core loop involves gathering ingredients, making chocolate, and running your shop. He also stresses that the adventure offers much more than that. In the trailer, we see your character engage in combat (with Barone saying the game has a stronger emphasis on action overall), choice-driven conversations, and hints of a grander, perhaps sinister plot. Barone states he doesn’t want to be handcuffed to any one particular style of game and clarifies that it's a single-player experience. He also says the game shares some gameplay similarities to Stardew Valley, but that it's a mostly different experience overall.

But why chocolate and what’s up with the ghosts? Barone explains it best in his blog by writing:

Corsair's flagship Virtuoso RGB Wireless XT headset is 26% off in the UK

Corsair's Virtuoso RGB Wireless XT is just as fancy as its long-ass name implies, and today it's £65 off as part of Corsair's autumn sale. That drops the price from £250 to £185, considerably less than even the going price on Amazon of £230. I think this is a great deal if you've got a hefty budget for an all-in-one wireless headset, so let me share a little on why I'm so convinced!

The Riftbreaker Review

2 years 6 months ago

There were so many moments while playing The Riftbreaker where I stood at the precipice of annihilation: my resources dwindling, my base relatively undefended as I scrambled to put out fires, and tens of thousands of aggressive aliens marching in my direction. Whether I was managing resources, constructing my base of operations, making upgrade decisions for my mech, or battling hordes of enemies, this RTS/top-down shooter hybrid rarely let me feel at ease – in a good way. Even with several unfortunate bugs and a bland story, surviving by the skin of my teeth through meticulous time management and split-second decision-making made it all worth it.

As a frontiersman sent to colonize the uncharted planet of Galatea 37, you run around in a mech and have to establish a base of operations, survive the incredibly hostile local flora and fauna, and open a portal back to Earth before you get eaten by several thousand monsters (or have a panic attack in real life). The characters and story are bland and forgettable and feel like an afterthought that’s mostly used as an excuse to give you increasingly challenging objectives to complete. The writing and voice acting in particular are often laughable, and the main character, Ashley, is about as interesting as a sheet of drywall. But The Riftbreaker succeeds in so many other ways that I found it pretty easy to ignore the awful banter playing in the background.

Dead By Daylight's The Midnight Grove Halloween Event Is Live Now

2 years 6 months ago

It may not be Halloween just yet, but Dead by Daylight's Halloween event starts today. It's a celebration about smashing pumpkins, getting new cosmetics, and dealing with some new elements inside each map that players already know and love. You can earn new stuff for the new character Mikaela Reid, as well!

Click here to watch embedded media

While Mikaela is the first survivor to the game that has added the concept of boon totems, some of the wrinkles are still getting worked out with her abilities. But hey, it's fun to have the killer have to muddle about to go find those totems sometimes too right? It's not just the survivor's job to go track down that Hex: Ruin and Hex: Devour Hope now!

The Midnight Grove event runs from today until November 4, and if you log in during this time frame you'll get a one-time bonus of 666,666 bloodpoints. That's actually a pretty nice boost, so you can use that to do anything, but it's probably a great idea to level up Mikaela. There's a special reward tome that you can complete during this period that has a bunch of cool things to unlock, including an outfit for Mikaela, an outlet for Doctor, and an assortment of extremely cool Halloween charms.

Xbox Series X|S to Receive 2TB & 512GB Storage Expansion Cards Options This Year

2 years 6 months ago

So the nice thing about the Xbox Series X|S is that it has some pretty powerful and fast storage memory card options. The bad thing about it, though, is that it’s quite expensive and up until now your options have been limited.

Soon Xbox and Seagate will roll out two new memory card options for anyone looking to expand their storage. In November a 512GB storage expansion card will roll out and sometime in December, a 2TB option will join the lineup. The 512GB will retail for $139 and the 2TB option will go for a hefty $399, which is as much or sometimes even more expensive than what the Xbox Series S goes for.

While the storage expansion cards are expensive, the added options do at least provide a budget version and an option for anyone that wants to massively expand their storage and (hopefully) not need to delete stuff for a while and don’t care about the price.

A past version of me would have sucked it up and just bought the most expensive option because I hate having to delete games, I love just having access to my entire collection at all times. However, with how big games are nowadays, even when you buy a physical disc, it just seems like a losing battle.

That game features a retired Nathan Drake being coaxed into another adventure, but you therefore might want to experience some of the Indylike's earlier treasure hunts first. There is literally only one way I can think of to do that: watching the Uncharted movie, which is also due to release in cinemas early next year.

The first trailer just released, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.

Raytracing Will Come to Halo Infinite on PC Post-Launch

2 years 6 months ago

Today, in a new official blog post, detailing Halo Infinite’s ‘journey’ to PC, Xbox revealed that raytracing support will be coming to the PC version of Halo Infinite, but will be patched in later. Noah Benesch, the Product Marketing Manager at Xbox called it a post-launch priority.

The post focuses on the partnership between AMD and Xbox. If it’s you’re a big fan of AMD and would enjoy a product marketing manager at Xbox gushing over how great AMD is, then you might find the entire post interesting. Otherwise, the most interesting bit is definitely the news about raytracing, for those that are looking forward to having Halo Infinite look as good as it possibly can on PC.

Most excitingly though, we’re looking forward to working closely with AMD to bring raytracing to Halo Infinite. Raytracing is one our top development priorities post-launch and look forward to sharing more soon.

In addition, AMD and Xbox are teaming for a bonus to anyone that purchases “select AMD Radeon and AMD Ryzen boxed products at participating retailers and e-tailers”: a free month of Xbox Game Pass, presumably to play Halo Infinite with.

Halo Infinite will release on Dec. 8 on Xbox and PC.

Haunted Chocolatier, a New Game by Stardew Valley’s Creator, Has Been Announced

2 years 6 months ago

A new game by ConcernedApe, creator of wildly successful Stardew Valley, is now in development. After 10 years of dedication to Stardew Valley, his new project is called Haunted Chocolatier.

Two and a half minutes of gameplay were shown in a surprise trailer that gave us a glimpse of what to expect from Haunted Chocolatier. It uses many of the assets of Stardew Valley and has a similar aesthetic, but you can see that there is much more detail in the graphics of this game.

In the trailer, we see some glimpses of a town not unlike Pelican Town, with a shot of a big chocolatier, a building where chocolate is made and sold. Our customized character needs to collect some ingredients to make chocolate, which seems to be part of the premise of this new game.

It also appears as though there is a world that we can enter through the chocolatier via a painting that takes us to a dangerous land full of enemies; this seems to be where we collect ingredients.

There will be customization features as we can decorate the chocolotier with countertops, plants, and more.

Of course, in Stardew Valley fashion, it looks like we’ll be able to interact with a diverse cast of characters who we can give gifts to in Haunted Chocolatier. We can see a few examples of this in the trailer.

So, why the inclusion of the word haunted in the title? ConcernedApe comments on this, “I wanted to explore more fantastical possibilities… experiences that take you beyond the ordinary. That’s where magical haunted ghost chocolate comes in.”

ConcernedApe also describes the gameplay loop of Haunted Chocolatier, “[it] involves gathering ingredients, making chocolate, and running a chocolate shop.”

Stardew Valley Creator Announces Haunted Chocolatier

2 years 6 months ago

Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe's next game will be Haunted Chocolatier, a brand new sim that bears a strong resemblance to his previous work. It's so similar, in fact, that it looks like it could even be a sequel, though ConcernedApe isn't ready to confirm that one way or the other.

In a brief reveal on Youtube, ConcernedApe showed off Haunted Chocolatier's beautiful new world. Much like Stardew Valley, it will be a top-down pixel-based sim, and it looks to have much the same flavor as ConcernedApe's previous work.

Some of the initial characters include Maddie, who asks what it's like to live in the big city, as well Jett and Nigel. Presumably you will be able to date quite a few of them.

ConcernedApe, the pseudonym for solo indie developer Eric Barone, has found considerable success with Stardew Valley, which has grown into one of the most popular indie games of the past decade. Earlier this year, Barone released a massive expansion for Stardew Valley, after which he said he would be shifting his attention to Haunted Chocolatier.

The Shining Fan Made an Amazing Wendy Torrance Puppet

2 years 6 months ago

Despite the fact that it came out over four decades ago, The Shining still holds up as one of the best horror films ever made. And while a lot of that is thanks to great writing and cinematography, the movie wouldn’t have been nearly as successful if it weren’t for the amazing performances of its cast.

Shelley Duvall as Wendy Torrance deserves special praise, as her performance, especially when confronted by Jack, is marvelous. To commemorate her character, animator Adeena Grubb recently created an amazing puppet that looks like something out of Coraline.

As you can see in the post above to the Horror subreddit, the Wendy Torrance doll that Grubb created is very detailed, featuring a magnetic mouth, worn fingers, and a wedding ring. You can see even more detail of the doll by heading over to her Instagram page.

Can Darkest Dungeon 2 Make Early Access Worthwhile For Me?

2 years 6 months ago

Darkest Dungeon 2 is coming to the Epic Games Store’s Early Access on October 26, and I can’t wait to play it. But, despite my enthusiasm, I’ve been going back and forth on whether to check it out next week. Why? I’m still not sure Early Access is for me.

Broadly speaking, Early Access programs allow players to purchase a game while it is still in development. So, by definition, the game is not complete when you buy it, but, on the other hand, you get a chance to play an exciting title before it technically releases. Early Access can also be a really great option for developers to simultaneously fund their game while gauging interest for it. As a fan of indies in general, I have my eye on more than one Early Access title.
