Death's Door has broken my tiny brain

2 years 3 months ago

Death's Door is a great little game. I've been meaning to play it properly for a while, ever since I was told that you can slice signposts in half and then when you try and read it there's only half of the text left. And so what better game, I thought, to test out the new cloud gaming beta on the Xbox this weekend? (In fact, I ended up downloading the game because it streamed fine at like 10am but at peak times it went all pixely, like someone had huffed on my glasses.)

Reader, I bloody love Death's Door. Like Katharine said, it's kind of a more gentle Soulslike, with a Studio Ghibli-esque flair to the character design and world. Also, there are fun jokes like a gravedigger being called Steadhone and stuff. But I also hate Death's Door, because it's still not an easy game, and I think I ended up playing it improperly this weekend.

Intellivision CEO Tommy Tallarico Steps Down

2 years 3 months ago

Tommy Tallarico, the founder of Intellivision Entertainment and its CEO since the company formed in 2018, has stepped down from the role of CEO, to be replaced by former chief revenue officer Phil Adam.

According to a statement provided by the company, Tallarico will remain on board as the company's president, as well as its largest shareholder.

"As a 30+ year industry executive, I am excited to transition into the CEO role at Intellivision," Adam said. "As a business closing in on the last phase before launch, Tommy felt it important to provide focused roles so he can continue to do the things he loves the most. As always, we will be working hand in hand to bring Amico to the market."

Intellivision said in a statement to IGN that the management shift came in tandem with the beginning of the production of the Intellivision Amico console and that the move was "to better align its resources with those new challenges."

The Amico has struggled to get out the door thus far, with Intellivision announcing three separate delays to its release since the console's original planned launch in October 2020. It was most recently pushed to the end of 2021, but that too has come and gone and the console is still not in the wild as of February 2022. IGN Middle East was able to go hands-on with the console in May of 2021.

Sifu: Sean (The Fighter) Boss Fight Guide

2 years 3 months ago

If you made it past the first boss of Sifu, Fajar, you might feel unstoppable…at least until you get to the second stage. This level, known as The Club, is capped off with one of the toughest bosses in the entire game. Sean (The Fighter), as he’s called, is tremendously more technical than the previous boss, so it’s easy to understand how a player might get stuck. Here’s how to take down the Sean boss in Sifu.

How to defeat Sean

As soon as the fight begins, you can run to either side of the arena, to pick up a staff, but we actually recommend skipping this since you won’t need it. If you do decide to grab a weapon, you’ll want to run away quickly after you pick it up. Make sure you’re aware of where Sean is so you don’t get hit while arming yourself. Once you’ve got your bearings and have a little distance between you and the boss, slowly approach him so you can begin your assault. Though, given the method we’ll be using, having a weapon isn’t necessary.

The key with this boss is to dodge his attacks by holding L1 and pressing the left stick in the opposite direction of the strike. For instance, to duck under a sweep, hold L1 and press down on the left stick. We advise using this method instead of trying to block, as Sean’s attacks hit hard, causing your structure to break quickly.

Minecraft Preview Will Let Players Safely Check Out Upcoming Content

2 years 3 months ago

Anyone who wants to check out Minecraft's latest features without endangering their 100+ hour world can safely begin to do so thanks to a new feature being added to the game. Called Minecraft Preview, players will be able to safely test any additions to the game available in its latest beta builds and keep their normal world available at the same time.

Currently, Minecraft Preview is only available to users playing the game on iOS and Windows 10/11, as well as those in the Xbox Insiders program. Minecraft Preview will eventually replace Minecraft Beta, although the feature is still available on Xbox, Windows, and Android devices.

Minecraft Preview's main improvement from Minecraft Beta is simply that players won't have to worry about deleting their precious worlds. Minecraft Beta would previously move existing worlds over to the beta build of the game. However, when reverting back to the release version, worlds could sometimes be lost or become corrupted. Mojang has previously warned users to back up their worlds before participating in a beta, but Minecraft Preview should fix the issue entirely.

Anyone who has access to Minecraft Preview will be able to download it as a completely separate app. For Xbox Insiders and anyone on Windows, Minecraft Preview will simply show up as an app that can be downloaded and installed. Anyone playing Minecraft on an iOS device can do the same but will have to sign up for the beta on Apple's TestFlight site.

The Wolf Among Us 2 Stream Coming This Wednesday

2 years 3 months ago

Prior to its dissolution, Telltale Games created a ton of episodic adventure games, and one of the most exciting was The Wolf Among Us. The fairy tale story based on the Fables comic series was never given a sequel, but that's changing soon, and the revived incarnation of Telltale is set to show off the game very soon.

Streaming at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET on Wednesday, February 9, The Wolf Among Us 2's behind-the-scenes "Greetings From Fabletown" presentation will be hosted by Geoff Keighley. Though it looks like The Wolf Among Us 2 will be the star of the show, a nebulous "+ more" in the announcement tweet suggests we could get information about other games, too. It will air on both Twitch and YouTube. The stream will run for about 30 minutes and will feature in-game footage, including the first official trailer.

Apex Legends Control Tips: Shaking Things Up In The Outlands

2 years 3 months ago

Season 12 of Apex Legends is underway, and it has brought with it a new limited-time Control mode that is shaking things up the Outlands and promising no shortage of fun to be had during the mode's three-week lifespan. Control is a 9v9 objective-based mode that sees players work together to capture and hold zones, not unlike Domination modes from popular games like Call of Duty and Battlefield. Infinite respawns, rapid shield regeneration, and loadout options provide the type of traditional gameplay you have come to expect from standard first-person shooters, but we've still got a few tips to increase your chances of success.

Playing with your team is more important than ever

Playing with your team in Apex Legends' battle royale mode is highly recommended, but it's downright imperative in Control. Unlike in battle royale, where teams are often very split and preoccupied, Control is an extremely hectic mode with less of an emphasis on exploration and looting. Because of this, you and your team are going to be pushed frequently and in greater numbers.

Sticking by your teammates means that you can complement each other with your abilities for maximum protection or aggression, or you can simply cover each other while your shields recharge. Additionally, working together to take objectives and kill enemies also increases your rating in the match, giving you access to better versions of your guns that can make you a force to be reckoned with.

Surprisingly Accurate Madden NFL Picks Super Bowl 56 Winner

2 years 3 months ago

EA has revealed its official Madden NFL 22 prediction that the Cincinnati Bengals will win Super Bowl 55, defeating the Los Angeles Rams by just three points. A tight game is expected with a 24-21 final score, though Madden has only predicted the exact score once — when the Patriots defeated the Seahawks 28-24 in 2015.

Once known for its frightening accuracy, Madden's Super Bowl predictions have fallen off in recent years. Nevertheless, Madden NFL has managed to be correct 61% overall since the tradition began in 2004.

Madden's simulation has the Bengals scoring first with a touchdown pass to Ja'Marr Chase, with the Rams equalizing with a four-yard run from Sony Michel. The Rams then take a halftime lead following a 32-yard catch and score from Cooper Kupp, followed by a touchdown from the Bengals early in the third, tying the game.

An intense fourth quarter proceeds in the simulation with a touchdown on each side, but in the closing seconds of the game, Joe Burrow leads a final drive for the Bengals who score and win their first Super Bowl title. It would be a perfect capper for long-suffering Bengals fans, many of whom surely remember Joe Montana tormenting them in the famous Super Bowls of the 1980s.

Some comfort for Rams fans: Madden was wrong in its prediction last year, saying the Kansas City Chiefs would defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by ten points. The real game ended in a 31-9 victory for the Bucs.

IGN said Madden NFL 22 was "okay", as the game "takes a small and unimpressive first step into the Xbox Series X and PS5 generation, with even its better new ideas hobbled by poor execution."

Apex Legends Season 12 Patch Notes Detail Crypto Buff And The Return Of Hammerpoint Rounds

2 years 3 months ago

Apex Legends Season 12: Defiance drops tomorrow and Respawn Entertainment has released the full patch notes, detailing a buff for Crypto, a slight nerf for Caustic, and changes for both Olympus and Storm Point. The patch notes also detail two weapons being moved exclusively to the crafting station, as well as changes to the PvE elements of Storm Point.

The Season 12: Defiance patch notes provide a look at some of the biggest changes coming in the new season. While things like Mad Maggie's kit and the new LTM Control had already been revealed, some of the finer details are new. Olympus is getting an update with Season 12, with the map being expanded to try and get fire fights out of the center of the map. Storm Point, which was introduced last season, is having its Prowlers changed. The Prowlers will now do reduced damage to legends while providing more crafting materials for clearing out a nest.

The ranked system is getting tweaked with Season 12, lowering the amount of Ranked Points earned for getting the maximum number of kills, while increasing the amount of RP earned for reaching the top five. Crypto is getting a buff, allowing him to throw his drone in a straight line. The drone will now immediately begin scanning for enemies instead of forcing Crypto to pilot it immediately. If the thrown drone hits a wall or another obstacle, it will ricochet and turn around. The Neurolink detection FOV has been increased as well, so a wider range of enemies can be detected.

Review Roundup For Sifu--Here's What The Critics Think Of The PS5 And PC Game

2 years 3 months ago

Developer Sloclap's beat-'em-up Sifu launches this week on PS4, PS5, and PC, and ahead of its debut, reviews for the game have begun to appear online. The launch of Sifu comes as the game has also been criticized for its cultural depictions. Khee Hoon Chan for TheGamer called Sifu a "soulless caricature."

The combat in Sifu takes the form of a style of kung fu known as Pak Mei. Players beat and bash enemies with quick attacks that can crunch ribs and break jawbones. Here at GameSpot, we scored the game a 9/10 in our Sifu review. Reviewer Richard Wakeling said the combat mechanics help make each hit feel "incredibly satisfying," with high praise for the game's environment layouts as well.

Sifu also has an aging mechanic that follows your character's story from a kid to an aged kung fu master. As you get older, your character's maximum health decreases but damage attributes grows thanks to the wisdom attained over a career fighting enemies.

"There are memorable moments that stand out throughout, such as the boss fights and an enjoyable recreation of the iconic hallway scene from Oldboy, but it's Sifu's combat that shines through most brightly," Wakeling said in GameSpot's review. "For as unique and interesting as its aging mechanic is, it wouldn't work without the combat carrying the load and ensuring that each replay is just as engaging as the last. Is one life enough to know kung fu? Maybe not. But I would happily spend mine playing Sifu to find out."

For a wider look at the critical reaction to Sifu, check out more review scores and excerpts below, while additional insight can be seen on GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

Gigabyte RTX 3050 Gaming OC 8G Review - The Bare Minimum

2 years 3 months ago

There's no denying that the ongoing semiconductor shortage has made it a challenging time to get your hands on a new GPU. Even if you can, you're often forced to pay well over the recommended retail price for it, with demand heavily outweighing available supply and thus creating a lucrative market for some unwelcome price gouging. It's what makes new releases of GPUs, such as the RTX 3050, so tricky. On paper, the latest graphics card from Nvidia delivers--it's a good GPU for 1080p gaming at high refresh rates, with the bonus of ray tracing and DLSS support. But if you can't find it for the price it's meant to be sold at, does that even matter anymore?

The RTX 3050 sits at the bottom of Nvidia's current line of new GPUs, positioned as this generation's budget card alongside significantly more expensive options such as the RTX 3060 and RTX 3070. It's evident that the price cut comes with its own share of concessions made on the hardware side. The GA106 GPU that the RTX 3050 uses is a slightly smaller version of the one in the RTX 3060, suggesting that Nvidia is making economical use of silicon it previously might have kept off shelves. That said, you're not going to get close to the same performance, even with the 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM that is shared between the two tiers of cards.

Technical details

For starters, the RTX 3050 limits its memory to a 128-bit bus, drastically reducing its effective memory bandwidth to just 224GBps. This comes into play when trying to hit higher frame rates at 1440p, where the available memory on offer hits the mark but just doesn't have the raw speed to keep up. Elsewhere, the 2560 CUDA cores and 12 billion transistors initially make the RTX 3050 sound more like a replacement for the RTX 2060 from last generation, but its much lower Tensor Core count and effective memory bandwidth keep it well behind in real-world applications.

Dying Light 2 Secret Weapon: How To Get The Pan of Destiny

Found in the Renegade's fortress, the lone building in the Newfound Lost Lands region, you can only find the chicken after completing Dying Light 2's main story.

FromSoftware's catalog of games is synonymous with sweeping narrative design and challenging combat, the latter leading to some particularly memorable boss battles for millions of Soulsborne players. There are simply too many exciting encounters to list between all of Miyazaki's acclaimed projects. Good thing a bunch of PlayStation developers picked some of their favorite FromSoftware bosses and spoke about the combat design and spectacle of each fight. Even Miyazaki chimed in on the boss he's most proud of!

An extensive post on the official PlayStation blog lists the developers from many prominent studios, including Insomniac Games, Bluepoint Games, Naughty Dog, Bend Studio, and Santa Monica Studios. I've cherry-picked some quotes from these developers and listed them below. To read all of the entries, be sure to head over to the PS blog.

Producer Randall Lowe – Bluepoint Games

"When you enter the Lothric chapel, the door closes, and the darkness engulfs the room. For me, one of the most memorable moments in games unfurled before my eyes. The Dancer, dangling from the pooled darkness, dropping down and sinuously moving to stand before my character."

Every EA Game in Development

2 years 3 months ago

With Microsoft set to acquire Activision Blizzard, EA is on the cusp of becoming gaming’s biggest western third-party publisher in terms of revenue and market cap. The company has sustained success for decades — despite notable controversies surrounding its business practices — thanks to a diverse portfolio of games, from mobile money makers and annual sports titles to AAA experiences from renowned in-house studios like Respawn, DICE, and BioWare.

Considering how difficult it is to keep track of all that’s going on within such a massive publisher, we decided to compile this list of every EA game we know to be in development for consoles and PC. (This list doesn’t include rumored projects or the publisher’s many phone games in development at Glu Mobile, Playdemic, or its other mobile-focused studios.)

Click through the gallery below or continue scrolling for our rundown of all 12 console and PC games in development at EA, as of February 2022.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie Grossed Over 10 Billion Yen in Japan

2 years 3 months ago

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie hit 10 billion yen

Toho Movie announced that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has reached a revenue of 10.4 billion yen (~$90.4 million) with over 7.6 million tickets sold. The anime movie surpassed the 10 billion yen milestone 43 days after it came out in Japanese theaters on December 24, 2021.

The movie adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen's prequel has become one of the most popular anime movies. It grossed over 5.8 billion yen with 4.3 million tickets sold within its first 11 days. However, it still did not come anywhere close to Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train. The Demon Slayer movie hit the 10 billion mark in just ten days after its release in October 2020.

The Japan Academy Film Prize Association had also put Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as one of the nominees for the Best Animation of the Year. The nominee list also includes Evangelion 3.0+1.01: Thrice Upon a Time. Revenue-wise, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 outpaced Evangelion, which needed four months from March to July 2021 to reach 10 billion yen. The association will announce the award winner in March 2022.
