Someone Is Already Making A Steamboat Willie Mickey Mouse Horror Game

On January 1, Steamboat Willie, the cartoon that introduced the world to Mickey Mouse, entered the public domain, meaning the first version of Disney’s iconic mascot is (mostly) free to use by anyone. And just like when the film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey took advantage of that whimsical character entering the public domain, someone has already started making a twisted, horrifying version of Mickey. In this case, it’s a video game.

It’s called Infestation: Origins, and it’s the debut title by Nightmare Forge Games. The game is an episodic four-player co-op survival adventure in which players control exterminators tasked with killing mutated vermin – and one of them happens to be a terrifying, person-sized monster modeled after Mickey. Similar to games like Phasmophobia and Lethal Company, you’ll rely on various tools and surveillance equipment to track the source of the infestations before neutralizing them. You’ll also have to maintain power for certain pieces of equipment while evading the giant, murderous rodents.

I Hate How Much I Love Ruan Mei in Honkai: Star Rail

I Hate How Much I Love Ruan Mei in Honkai: Star Rail

It isn’t uncommon for HoYoVerse to offer Honkai: Star Rail players morally dubious characters as allies. I mean, consider Kafka, Silver Wolf, Blade, Jingliu, and Luocha. There’s even a hint that Duke Inferno, who is head of the villainous Annihilation Gang and appears in recent 1.6 missions, could be playable after 2.0. But with Ruan Mei we have a new playable person in Honkai: Star Rail who is constantly questionable and doing things that are wrong, which I hate, but also became my favorite and most beloved support.

Editor’s Note: There will be Honkai: Star Rail spoilers for the 1.6 Trailblaze Continuance Missions storylines.

3DS and DS Style AYANEO FLIP KB and FLIP DS Indiegogo Page Opens

AYANEO announced that it opened the Indiegogo page for its upcoming AYANEO FLIP KB and DS Windows handheld PCs. Each one has a flip up screen, with one of the two devices having a second screen like a Nintendo DS or 3DS.

At the moment, the AYANEO FLIP KB and DS page is mainly informative. It shows the two latest Windows handhelds, offering a look at how they will function and details about their specs. It also offers an option to supply an email address to be notified about other updates.

The two handhelds feature similar specs, but different bottom halves servicing different purposes. The FLIP KB model has a full keyboard, in addition to Hall joysticks, controller-style buttons, and an optical finger mouse. The FLIP DS model is the AYANEO system that more greatly resembles a Nintendo DS or 3DS. It features a second touch screen and a controller.

As for the insides and other functions, they remain the same for both. Each one has a 120Hz, 1080p screen that is seven inches. With the DS model, its touch screen is 3.5 inches. Both use an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U. There’s also a six-axis gyroscope built into it. Both versions have 120, 150, and 180 degree positions for the screen.

Stray Souls developer shuts down following publisher's closure, cyberbullying and poor sales

Stray Souls developer Jukai Studio is shutting down. The decision to close was in light of its publisher Versus Evil also shutting down, but the studio additionally cited cyberbullying, Stray Souls' poor reception and bad sales as contributing factors.

The studio announced it was closing in December, the same day Versus Evil closed, via a social media post (thanks, GamesIndustry.biz). "We are aware you had high expectations for Stray Souls, but we never informed you that only two core individuals, along with contracted personnel, were working on the game," it said.

"We did everything in our power to bring the project to completion in the best possible form, but throughout the entire duration we, our publisher staff, other publisher dev teams and our close ones were constantly attacked by a cyber persecutor, and some of you, as our community, were also tormented with unwanted messages and emails."

I'm learning to do cryptic crosswords in 2024, and they are the worst

In 2024, I am learning to do cryptic crosswords. Last year I complained about Puzzmo's crossword clues being very US-centric and Excors commented that US and UK puzzles seem very different, both in their form and in the fact that UK crosswords are often crytpic. Which is true! Often if you see a "quick crossword" in a UK paper that means "crossword with clues that are general knowledge questions and not an archaic set of riddles - you know, for if you're waiting for the kettle to boil, or are an idiot". So I decided to look into how you actually do cryptics. It's way harder than I thought, but at the same time I did not realise it's just smug puns.

Mecha BREAK Is Like a Multiplayer Mecha Anime Brought To Life

Mecha BREAK, at first glance, has all the flash of a mecha anime brought to life. I’m talking massive, colorful robot suits, each with their own movesets, roles, and specialties strafing across arena shooter-style maps in bouts of neon-lit glory. What you might not have been able to glean from its energetic reveal trailer at The Game Awards, though, is that it’s actually a multiplayer-only experience. And with Titanfall on ice and Armored Core 6 burying its PvP behind a few chapters of its campaign, it’s cool to see a mech game on this scale fully commit to multiplayer.

Despite their hulking size, mechs in Mecha BREAK don’t feel like lumbering bots of mass destruction. Instead, they move with speed and grace. Strafing to dodge enemy fire just to get in close to hit them with a few melee attacks before parrying their counterattack with your shield and then finishing the job, feels much tighter than you’d expect. Hits land with the appropriate oomph, and each attack lights up the screen with bright colors. It’s clear Mecha BREAK understands that mechs are inherently cool and that a good mech game needs to transmit that coolness through the controller.

Here's What's Leaving Game Pass Soon, Including GTA 5 Again

Microsoft has confirmed the Game Pass removals for the first half of January 2024, and there are five titles exiting the catalog, including Grand Theft Auto V. This was previously reported and now it's confirmed.

Rockstar's popular open-world game leaves the catalog on January 5. The game has been added to and removed from the Game Pass library on multiple occasions, dating back to its original arrival into the subscription catalog 2020. Take-Two, the company that owns Rockstar and the GTA series, has said it has issues with the subscription model but will still bring games to services like Game Pass on a case-by-case basis.

On January 15, four other games will leave Game Pass, including Garden Story, MotoGP 22, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 3 Portable.

Fans of the Person series still have access to Persona 5 Tactica on Game Pass, while Persona 3 Reload is coming to Game Pass in February.

Microsoft typically removes titles from Game Pass in two waves, so check back with GameSpot later in the month to see what other games are getting dumped this month.

In terms of additions to the Game Pass library for January 2024, Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Resident Evil 2 are headed to the catalog this month.

See the FFVII Ever Crisis Cloud and Sephiroth New Year’s Wallpapers

In FFVII Ever Crisis, getting items the New Year’s banner for Cloud and young Sephiroth means getting live wallpapers. These can be used on the home screen, and two trailers appeared on social media for the latest additions.

As a reminder, you must pay or use earned gems on the gacha to eventually earn these wallpapers. Once you do, you get the moving image of Cloud or Sephiroth donning and using the new equipment for your main screen. This is a cosmetic change that only features imagery, as the background music is still the typical theme for the game.

The first of the two FFVII Ever Crisis New Year’s wallpapers is one of Cloud. He’s wearing the Official Festive Garb gear and wielding Skysplitter.

Next, here’s the newest young Sephiroth wallpaper. His unique gear for this banner and background is Celebratory Garb. He’s holding his new Radiant Edge sword.

Jack Black Joins Live-Action Minecraft Movie, Reportedly As Steve

Minecraft

Jack Black has joined the cast of the in-development live-action Minecraft movie. Rumors about this casting popped up yesterday, January 2, with Deadline reporting that Black would play Steve (the Minecraft guy with the teal shirt and blue pants). Notably, Black starred as the villainous Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie last year, giving us the instant-classic "Peaches," too.

Following that report, other outlets, like Variety, further confirmed that Black would be starring in Minecraft alongside previously announced cast members like Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Game of Thrones), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), and Emma Myers (Wednesday). Black himself even nodded to the news in an Instagram post that showed him reading a Minecraft Basics for Dummies book. However, neither he nor the film's various production companies, like Warner Bros. and Legendary, have confirmed Deadline's report that he's playing Steve.

Infestation studio changes game name following concern over Neo-Nazi symbolism

Nightmare Forge Games has changed the name of horror game Infestation 88 after speculation that the number in its title was a Neo-Nazi symbol.

Originally titled Infestation 88 and later stylised as '88, the studio has now removed the number entirely from its name. The game, which had its debut trailer earlier this week after the original Steamboat Willie Disney cartoon entered the public domain, is now known as Infestation: Origins.

The studio has since stated the number 88 was originally chosen for its "symmetrical design" and insisted any connection with Neo-Nazi connotations was unintentional.

Game Pass Releases For January 2024 Announced, Includes Assassin's Creed Valhalla And Resident Evil 2

The first wave of new additions to the Game Pass catalog for 2024 has been announced, and the library is adding eight titles in the first half of the month. These include games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Resident Evil 2, and Super Mega Baseball 4.

Available today, January 3, is the narrative-driven steampunk adventure game Close to the Sun. Then on January 4, the Game Pass catalog adds the World War II game Hell Let Loose. After that, January 9 sees the Game Pass debut of titles like the aforementioned Valhalla and the action-adventure game Figment.

The Game Pass library then adds Super Mega Baseball 4 on January 11, along with We Happy Few, which makes its return to the library. We Happy Few is developed by the Microsoft-owned developer Compulsion Games, and many wondered why it was removed a year ago this month. That's not exactly clear, but the game will be back on Game Pass quite soon.

Resident Evil 2's remake launches on January 16 into Game Pass, while the horror game Those Who Remain arrives that day as well. The first half of January 2024's Game Pass launches do not include any day-one new releases.

Microsoft typically announces monthly Game Pass additions in two waves, so check back later in the month for a second wave of additions to the catalog.

In terms of titles leaving Game Pass in the first half of January 2024, GTA V, Garden Story, MotoGP 22, Persona 4 Golden, and Person 3 Portable are all getting dumped from the library soon.
