Ghost of Tsushima retains the top spot of the UK Charts

3 years 9 months ago

Sucker Punch's mega-selling PS4 release Ghost of Tsushima has successfully retained the number one spot of the UK Charts. The open-world samurai epic has already broken global release records, selling 2.4 million copies worldwide in just the first three days of release, thereby becoming the PS4's fastest-selling, first-party, original IP.

The other major release of this past fortnight - Nintendo's Paper Mario: The Origami King - currently resides at number four, having slipped two places from its launch week standing. Speaking of Nintendo, both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Ring Fit Adventure saw a sales resurgence, allowing the two Switch titles to climb to number two and number 10 respectively.

With very little on the horizon in terms of big-budget, mainstream releases, the UK Chart is likely to stagnate a little throughout August, with consistent sellers simply jockeying for position until September brings about the dawn of the lucrative Holiday market.

Take-Two nukes GTA: San Andreas fan remake trailer

3 years 9 months ago

When a trailer for a fan-made remake of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas burst onto the scene earlier this month, many thought it was too good to be true. And it was, in a sense: as while the trailer displayed a "remade" version of San Andreas in Unreal Engine 4, the project was merely a tool to create Machinima videos, and the team behind the trailer announced they had no plans to release a fully playable remake.

Still, it was enough to get people very excited about the idea of a remake for the nearly 16-year-old game. Until the Take-Two lawyers arrived.

Take a peep at the link for the original trailer now, and you'll discover that the video has been removed due to a copyright claim by Take-Two Interactive. As noted by YouTuber Swegta, the channel was previously filled with information about the team, including links to their Facebook and Patreon, all of which has now vanished. The Patreon itself is now marked as "under review", while the Facebook page has been removed.

Check out these cute Animal Crossing: New Horizons plushies

3 years 9 months ago

If you ever wanted a little Isabelle for your very own, you're finally in luck. Pre-orders are now open on a new range of plush toys based on the cheerful characters from its blockbuster Switch release Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Created by soft toy manufacturer San-ei Boeki, the first run of dolls includes the hard workin', hard drinkin' Isabelle, all-round monster Tom Nook, and Timmy and Tommy, to whom I'm fairly indifferent. The characters range from around 6-8 inches in height and are sporting their summery getups from Nintendo's tropical island smash hit.

Witcher Netflix showrunner announces prequel series set 1200 years earlier

3 years 9 months ago

Be still my beating heart! Lauren Hissrich, showrunner for The Witcher Netflix series, has announced a new six-part series called The Witcher: Blood Origin.

It will be a prequel story set 1200 years before Geralt and the events we're familiar with, and will chart the origin of the Witchers and how they came to be. Hissrich confirmed Witcher creator Andrzej Sapkowski will, "Hell yes," be involved.

"This has been the toughest secret to keep!" tweeted Hissrich. "I've always wanted to dive deeper into the myth and lore of the Continent, and now fans will have a chance to explore it with [Declan de Barra] in a prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin. Elves, and enemies, and the end, oh my..."

The eyes have it – I can't get enough of Death Stranding's immaculate faces

3 years 9 months ago

A screenshot of Bridget from Death Stranding

I’m not afraid to say that I have absolutely no idea about what’s going on in Death Stranding after a couple of hours with it. Something about a big apocalypse, some strands, a man who has the face of Guillermo Del Toro but not his voice keeps trying to me to kill a baby in a jar, and apparently my mum is the president of the United States? It’s a lot, even by Kojima’s standards, but hot damn if I’m not 100% engrossed despite all its exposition gubbins, because I just can’t stop gawping at everyone’s beautiful faces.

Japanese Pokemon players vote Generation One as the most popular subseries, followed by X&Y

3 years 9 months ago

The debate rages ever on.

Although folks likely have their "favorite" Pokémon game, the original generation often reigns supreme over them all. I mean, they kind of started everything, and kicked off decades of Poké-love in just about every facet of media, so it stands to reason that they'd have the most fans. That line of thinking is prevailing once again as the first generation just won a new popularity poll on popular Japanese site Goo Rankings.

According to fans, Pokémon Red & Green (the Japanese equivalent of Red & Blue) are number one. That ranking is followed by X & Y surprisingly (one of my personal favorites that's often chided), then Diamond/Pearl, Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire, Black/White, Detective Pikachu, Pokemon Platinum, Heart Gold/Soul Silver and Pokemon Yellow [Pikachu].

Of note, Heart/Soul are the only remakes that made the top 10 and Platinum is the sole "third version" that made it. Plus, pre-2016 (forgoing Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield), Black and White 2 is the only generation that outright missed the top 10 ranking. While everyone has their take, this list is pretty decent!

Is it OK to say I enjoy Star Wars: The Old Republic yet?

3 years 9 months ago

I really enjoy not playing with anyone else in Star Wars: The Old Republic, which seems like a horrible thing to say given it's a massively-multiplayer online game, but it's what I've always done. It's not that I hate other people, or that I'm zealously role-playing a Sith Lord who hates people (though I am a Sith Lord who hates people), it's just I want to be the only hero in my Star Wars story, thank you. Everyone else can chuff off, and I love that Star Wars: The Old Republic gets that.

SWTOR has always understood a good chunk of people want to play it because they want a Knights of the Old Republic experience, not because they're mad keen on grouping up with a load of strangers. That is why SWTOR has always included long, winding storylines for each character class right from the beginning of the game. Single-player story experiences within a massively multiplayer world - a kind of dual-aspect game. And these single-player segments are voiced, have cutscenes and dialogue choices, companions and romances. They were impressive at launch in 2011 and are even more so now.

Ghost of Tsushima's Lethal difficulty makes Jin and enemies deadlier

3 years 9 months ago

Whether you're struggling to nail the timing for parrying or dodging in Ghost of Tsushima, or you're feeling overpowered as hell in most encounters, the newly-released patch 1.05 is worth a look. Sucker Punch added an even tougher difficulty – dubbed Lethal – and included a Lower Intensity toggle.

Lethal difficulty is interesting. Instead of making enemies "more deadly" across the board and calling it a day, the developers also made Jin more powerful. That said, the Mongols can detect him faster when he's sneaking around, they're "more aggressive" in combat, and the parry/dodge timing is even "tighter."

On the flip side, for players who are dying a lot against groups or repeatedly failing duels, Ghost of Tsushima now has a Lower Intensity combat setting in its Accessibility menu. Here's the rundown:

  • Most enemy attacks which are normally unblockable become blockable when Lower Intensity is enabled. Blocking with L1 will keep you safe from more attacks than standard combat, though some attacks must still be dodged.
  • Enemies break off their attack combos after damaging you, giving you a chance to recover before the next wave of attacks. In addition, your heavy attacks will interrupt attacks from Brutes, giving you another way to stop their combos.
  • Enemies will not attack you while you're using Resolve to heal
  • Enemy awareness builds more slowly, giving you more time to recover after being spotted

Patch 1.05 has a few text-related options, too. You can increase the text size of "subtitles, mission objectives, and interact prompts" by 150% (that was quick!), turn off the (sometimes repetitive) speaker names, and change the subtitle text to be yellow, blue, red, or green (beyond the default white).

Have you played… Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order?

3 years 9 months ago

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

My journey playing through Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for guides on RPS was a very strange one. I played for ten hours on the first day, and came away exhausted and with only negative things to say about it. The combat was like Sekiro but worse, the cutscenes were lengthy and unskippable, the frame rate was inconsistent, and the puzzle sections were just about the last thing I wanted to encounter in a Star Wars game.

I found myself longing to get to the end of the game so I could finish writing my guides and stop playing. But instead, the moment I finished the campaign I started again on the highest difficulty. And then again. And again. Over the course of its campaign, the game had taken a janky, unstable lightsaber to my heart and carved a Fallen Order-shaped hole in me with neither my knowledge nor my consent. Now, I have to concentrate to notice all those negative points that previously I was unable to look beyond.

Japanese fighting game giants to hold 'roundtable' live stream

3 years 9 months ago

Some of Japan's most successful and influential fighting game developers/publishers will gather together for a "roundtable discussion" this coming weekend.

This meeting of the minds will see notable companies such as Capcom (Street Fighter), Bandai Namco (Tekken and DBFZ), Arc System Works (Guilty Gear, BlazBlue), SNK (King of Fighters), Arika (Fighting Layer EX), and Koei Tecmo (Dead or Alive) meet up, (presumably digitally), for a good ol' chinwag about upcoming titles, esports, and the future of the genre.

Counter-Strike: GO has swapped in a couple of player-made maps

3 years 9 months ago

It’s time to say goodbye to the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive maps Chlorine and Jungle, as they’ve been swapped out to make room for two new community ones. Say hello, then, to Swamp and Mutiny. The first one is pretty self-explanatory, it’s a big green swamp complete with a boat repair shop and some murky water. The second, Mutiny, is pirate-themed – as you might expect – and features a harbour-looking area with some big ol’ docked ships as delightful scenery to your tactical shooting.

Apex Legends' crossplay won't force PC players to match with console

It’s a strange new world where this morning’s video game news was discovered through TikTok. Fall Guys is the perfect choice for PlayStation Plus in August

3 years 9 months ago

The stars are aligning for Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, a game show-inspired battle royale platformer in which 60 players try their wobbly best to survive enough rounds to be crowned the sole winner. It's a blast two surprisingly intense matches were all the convincing I needed and it's bound to be huge.

Fall Guys is launching on August 4, and it'll join the PlayStation Plus library the very same day. After launch day, you'll have until August 31 to claim your PS4 copy. The second PS Plus August freebie, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, will be up for grabs from July 28 to August 31.

After a super successful beta weekend (that included topping the Twitch charts), this is such a smart play on Mediatonic and Devolver Digital's part. I'm not sure Fall Guys has the potential longevity of something like Rocket League (who does?), but this seems like another lightning-in-a-bottle moment.

If you aren't subbed to PlayStation Plus, there's one more thing: Sony is flipping the PS4-wide "free online multiplayer" switch from August 8 at 12:01 a.m. through August 9 at 11:59 p.m. "local time."

Xbox Series X: Alleged Image of White Controller Surfaces

3 years 9 months ago
An image of what appears to be a white Xbox Series X controller has appeared online, suggesting another variant or version of the console exists. As first spotted by The Verge, a user known as "Wolfy_Wizzardo" posted a picture of the white controller to Reddit. The post and user account is now deleted, but apparently the image was taken by the user at a party hosted by the child of a Microsoft employee. You can spot the middle share button and the new indented Xbox Series X controller D-Pad, which makes this leaked controller variant appear somewhat credible by association. The Verge's Tom Warren spoke to the user before the post was taken down, and they told him that they had played games on the console, that the UI was similar to the Xbox One (a point we've heard before), the controller "looked more squarish" and had a more pronounced Xbox button.

Halo Infinite is apparently the start of the next 10 years of Halo, with no sequel plans

3 years 9 months ago

Microsoft is really taking their "Game Pass" and "no platform left behind" philosophy to the extreme, it seems.

Although the recent Xbox Games Showcase didn't say this specifically, IGN later confirmed that Halo Infinite was the start of something long term. Studio Head Chris Lee has announced that Infinite is going to be a platform of sorts, hosting content "for the future," with Infinite "growing over time...as the start of the next ten years for Halo and then building that as we go with our fans and community."

343 Industries seems to come out and say that Halo is not going to become Destiny (thank goodness), but the game will get free updates (raytracing is coming at some point). More story content will be added as well, and the numbered sequel convention is a thing of the past: at least at this moment.

Of course, if Infinite's launch doesn't go as planned, things could change and we could get another Halo reboot or a proper sequel that promises to fix what theoretically went wrong. We've seen it a million times before. But for now, Microsoft is all-in on Infinite, and I think that helps its prospects immensely: especially now that four-player split-screen co-op is confirmed.

Eiyuden Chronicle is a Suikoden spiritual successor created by members of the original Suikoden team

3 years 9 months ago

[Update: The Kickstarter is live now! You can also check out the debut trailer below. As far as platforms go, PC is fully confirmed, but PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Series X and "Nintendo's next generation console" are possibly in the cards.]

Record scratch noise: so you're probably wondering how we got into this situation, aren't you?

Well, for years (nay, decades) people have been asking for a Suikoden successor. Suikoden 2, specifically, is considered one of the best JRPGs ever made and fetches absurd prices on the secondary market. It's one of the most "basic best JRPGs ever" alongside of Chrono Trigger. So when a spiritual successor gets announced long after Konami left the series to die: people notice.

Announced by way of an article on The VergeEiyuden Chronicle will follow in the footsteps of Suikoden, much like Mighty No. 9 tried to do juxtaposed to Mega Man and Bloodstained did going up against the legacy of Castlevania. What do all of these projects have in common? They're all using Kickstarter.

The new team taking on this gargantuan task is Rabbit & Bear Studios, formed by several members who worked on the original Suikoden series, including the legendary Yoshitaka Murayama, who served as the heart and soul of the first two games. Junko Kawano, who was the lead artist on several games in the franchise and Junichi Murakami, art director for Suikoden Tactics, are also on board.

With 5D Chess, you can checkmate in multiple dimensions

3 years 9 months ago

I'll be honest, regular 2D chess was already enough to sizzle my brain - but apparently that wasn't difficult enough, as someone has created 5D chess.

Released last week by Conor Petersen and Thunkspace, 5D Chess claims to be "the first ever chess variant with spatial, temporal, and parallel dimensions". There's multiverse time travel, branching timelines, parallel dimensions - all something that makes it sound more suitable for Dr. Who than the average human.

Early Steam and YouTube reviews have argued it's actually closer to 4D chess, as the game features two physical and two temporal axes ("height" is not interactable). The explainer by MariAurum below finally helped me gain an understanding of the four axes: there's your regular x and y physical axes (left, right, up and down on a traditional chess board), and then there's your temporal axes, one that represents "time" (as in the past and future of a board), and the second representing parallel dimensions.

Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers localization appears on Koei Tecmo report

3 years 9 months ago

Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers is getting set to release in the west, according to the latest financial report from Koei Tecmo. The annual document quietly notes the Musou-like title has been noted for localisation, though no specific release window is stated.

As a reminder, Persona 5 Scramble is an action-based epilogue to the smash hit JRPG Persona 5, and sees the Phantom Thieves travel across Japan, kicking ass and stealing hearts wherever and whenever they are required. It launched on PS4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan in February of this year, but has yet to receive a confirmed western release.

While Atlus is responsible for the distribution of Persona titles in the west, The Phantom Strikers was developed but Koei Tecmo's own Omega Force, hence why the title would feature in the Dynasty Warriors' publisher's report. This localisation will not come as a surprise to anyone, given the amazing success of recent Persona titles in North America and Europe.

Netflix confirms Geralt-less spinoff Witcher prequel series

3 years 9 months ago

Remember earlier this year, before hell on Earth happened, when we were all singing "Toss a Coin to Your Witcher" together? Good times.

While that era feels like it was eons ago, Netflix is hard at work drumming up hype for their upcoming second season of The Witcher TV show, which will allegedly make things less confusing given that it will feature a single timeline. But before that's even out, the streaming platform confirmed this morning that there will be a new prequel show that will focus partly on how "the first Witcher came to be."

It'll be set "1200 years before Geralt of Rivia," as multiple species merge into one universe. Netflix says that it'll be titled "The Witcher: Blood Origin," and will be a six-part live-action spinoff series from the minds of Declan de Barra and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. The former has worked on CW shows as well as Netflix's Iron Fist (woof) and has written one episode of The Witcher show. The latter is the showrunner of The Witcher, with writing and production credits from several Netflix Marvel shows (including one of the only good ones: Daredevil).

Given that a huge part of the current Witcher TV show's appeal is Henry Cavill as Geralt, I'm anxious to see what they have planned. As a reminder, an animated series is also on the way, as Netflix continues to aggressively attempt to make this the next Game of Thrones or Walking Dead.

Destroy All Humans guide: How to electrocute scientists with Tesla coils

3 years 9 months ago

There is very little about Destroy All Humans that is confusing. This is a game where the objectives are immediately clear, usually to destroy the humans in a certain way. Blow up a car, kill soldiers with rockets -- that sort of stuff. You can almost always immediately wrap your head around what Destroy All Humans asks you to do.

However, an optional objective in one of Destroy All Humans' last levels left me scratching my head. During the "Shocking Developments" mission, you're tasked with electrocuting three scientists with Tesla coils. It's the one objective that isn't necessarily intuitive.

I tried everything. I thought shooting the coils with my Zap-O-Matic would cause electricity beams to go flying everywhere. Nope. I thought using telekinesis to chuck the scientists into the coils would fry them. Nada. Maybe blowing up nearby items would cause a chain reaction of sorts? Definitely not.

Here's what you have to do: To electrocute scientists with Tesla coils, just pick them up with your psi-powers and rub them against the coil for a little bit. It's super easy, and they go down like mosquitoes in a bug zapper. It'll definitely blow your cover in these heavily-guarded areas, but what's a space invader to do?

There you go. This should save you some frustration and time right before the end of Destroy All Humans. A lot of people are gonna get stumped here because the game never teaches this technique. They'll go through their Rolodex of plausible solutions before landing here through a Google search. Welcome to Destructoid. We come in peace.

The stunning Analogue Pocket handheld is coming May 2021, pre-orders open in August

3 years 9 months ago

Late last year we covered the announcement of the Analogue Pocket: a device that could play "nearly all classic portable games," and it immediately caught my attention.

As a retro collector with over 50 portables to his name it's a pain to juggle them all when I want to re-experience retro games, but the Analogue Pocket admirably tries to solve that annoyance. While a lot of details were scarce beyond the technical stuff (3.5 inch 615ppi LCD, sporting a 1600x1440 resolution, all buttons can be mapped, there's a micro SD card slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the lithium ion battery can be recharged), we now have a solid release date and a price for the deck.

Revealed today by Analogue, the dock will run you $99.99, with the device still hitting that $199.99 mark from the original announcement. Pre-orders will open up on August 3, and the device will actually arrive in May of 2021. Analogue says that this far-off date is "due to the unfortunate state of global affairs and supply chain challenges outside of [their] control."

Beyond that, the scope has changed a bit. The Pocket's start, select and home buttons have been moved down a bit for "comfort" and the dock USB-C insertion point has been recessed a bit to make it more stable. The Pocket also sports a sleep/resume function, as well as four controllers through Bluetooth, 2.4g and wired USB and device-to-device linked-up multiplayer (bring your own cables).

It all sounds better the more I hear about it. While it's a ways off, I'll be ready for it.
