Hideo Kojima and Xbox Team Up

1 year 11 months ago

Game creator Hideo Kojima of Kojima Productions joined the Xbox Games Showcase presentation today for a quick but impactful announcement; he and his team are working on a new project in partnership with Xbox.

Unfortunately, he chose to share next to nothing about what the project will be, beyond sharing that it is a “game I have always wanted to make.”

Kojima also implied that it’s a new game, and thus likely not part of any existing franchise. He also spoke briefly about Microsoft’s cloud technology, suggesting that the project might leverage that capability as well.

It’s not much to go on, but it’s an interesting new direction for the studio and auteur, as Kojima has more recently been connected to Sony and its PlayStation brand.

It will be especially interesting to see what shape this new project will take as we learn more, but that may be quite a long way off from now.

1 year 11 months ago

Tonight's Xbox and Bethesda Showcase brought confirmation of Microsoft's new partnership with Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima.

Details were thin on the ground - really, there was nothing here which had not been reported already - but tonight Microsoft made it official.

Kojima is working on a brand new project with Xbox which will harness the company's cloud technology. If this sounds familiar, well, it's a promise we've heard before, and a detail which first found its way online last summer, when whispers of Kojima working with Microsoft first hit the internet.

Persona 5 Royal Arrives on Xbox in October, Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden to Follow

1 year 11 months ago

In a bit of a surprise twist, Phil Spencer took to the stage during the Xbox showcase today to announce that three Persona games were making their way to the Xbox, starting with Persona 5 Royal this October. We also got a flashy new trailer to go with the announcement, which you can check out down below:

Aside from Persona 5 Royal, Xbox fans will also be able to enjoy Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden, though release dates haven’t been announced for the latter two games just yet. It’ll definitely be a huge opportunity for Xbox players to finally get to check out Atlus’s biggest Persona games if they haven’t already, and just between you and me, Personas 3 and 4 are the ones worth checking out first for sure.

One other thing to note is that 3 and 4 will be getting improved graphics, so if you’re like me and have only been able to enjoy P3P on your crusty old Vita, this will be a nice change.

Anyways, Persona 5 Royal is set to be released for Xbox on Oct. 21.

First Starfield Footage Shows Off Massive Scale With Over 1,000 Planets And Ability To Build Your Own Spaceships

1 year 11 months ago

After years of CG trailers for Starfield, we've long been waiting to see this Bethesda Game Studios title in action, and that finally happened at today's Xbox Games Showcase. The initial reaction can simply be summarized as "WOW!"

In a variety of gameplay clips, creator Todd Howard walked us through various gameplay aspects, revealing that this science-fiction RPG features over 1,000 planets to explore. From barren moons to heavily populated worlds, you can go where you want to see what you discover.

The first locale we see is a moon called Kreet, which is stark in detail with rocky grain terrains and brief flares of color with red plants. In this regard, the color scheme is similar to Star Wars' Crait from The Last Jedi. Here, we are given our first taste of gameplay, which we see from both first- and third-person viewpoints. Despite looking like a barren place, Kreet is crawling with creatures, like trilobites that mean you no harm, as well as giant crabs that, at first instinct, appear to want to take a bite out of you, but after they see your gun drawn, they back away. It'll be interesting to see if these creatures' A.I. recognize you as a threat, or are designed to be skittish.

Since crafting is a part of Starfield, you'll be scanning and mining minerals as you explore new worlds. We see a sequence where iron (Fe) is discovered. If all minerals are labeled this way, we'll all be masters of the periodic table after sinking hundreds of hours into this game.

Obsidian is surprise-dropping brand new game Pentiment this November

1 year 11 months ago

We didn't see this one coming: renowned role-playing game developer Obsidian is releasing a brand new game called Pentiment this November on Xbox consoles, PC and the cloud.

It's a narrative-focused murder mystery set in medieval times, and the action takes place on the pages of an era-appropriate book. It certainly looks different to everything else out there.

The game is led by Obsidian star director Josh Sawyer (Fallout: new Vegas, Pillars of Eternity) and is apparently an idea he pitched years and years ago at Black Isle Studios, according to IGN, which interviewed Sawyer about his new game.

Fast-Paced Stealth Platformer Ereban: Shadow Legacy Announced

1 year 11 months ago

Today's Xbox Games Showcase featured many games – big and small – by a glut of different development teams. Baby Robot Games is a Barcelona-based studio that focuses on supernatural stealth and adventure games. Today, it revealed Ereban: Shadow Legacy, a game where you must harness mystical shadow powers and use high-tech gadgets to uncover the truth about your past to save the universe.

In the trailer, the main character, Ayana, who channels some serious Tron energy with her attire, confronts big mechs. Apparently, Ayana is the last descent of a forgotten race and is key to saving this dying, morally grey universe. The gameplay footage showed her stealthily outsmarting big machines and using an array of powers. She can also stab them through the head, so that's pretty cool. She even takes some big falls from huge heights, reminiscent of Assassin's Creed. Watch the trailer above to get the full scoop.

Ereban: Shadow Legacy will launch day one on Xbox Game Pass. No release date was revealed.

Does Diablo 4 Xbox Series X|S Have Cross-Play?

While Blizzard haven’t confirmed the existence of cross-play in Diablo 4 for Xbox Series X|S yet, it will more than likely be in the game, as every other version of the game emphatically boasts it. Whether function will be specific to just playing with other next-gen consoles (like PS5) and PC has yet to be stated.

Does Diablo 4 Xbox Series X|S Cross-Save?

At the moment, we don’t know if Diablo 4 will enable players to take their progression over with them to next-gen or other version of the game, though it seems likely, as the Blizzard has been making a big push to try and make the game as accessible as possible.

Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, And Persona 5 Royal Announced For Xbox, PS5 and PC [Updated]

1 year 11 months ago

Update: Atlus has announced that Persona 3, 4, and 5 are also coming to PS5 and Steam, as well as the previously announced Xbox and Windows Game Store ports.

Announced in a press release, no release date was given for the Steam or PS5 releases. No mention has been made of a Switch release, which will likely serve to further upset Nintendo fans who want Persona games on their console.

Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal are all headed to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. Microsoft revealed the ports during today's Xbox + Bethesda Showcase, which were previously only available on PlayStation platforms and PC. They will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.

Persona 3 is the most notable of the ports, as its availability has been limited over the years. Originally released way back in 2006, Persona 3 helped to popularize the series in America by introducing many of the conceits that fueled Persona 4 and 5, such as its daily calendar. It was last released on PlayStation Portable as Persona 3 Portable, marking the first and only time that the sub-series has made it possible to play as a female main character.

Diablo IV Necromancer Class Revealed, Alongside World Bosses, PvP Details, & More

1 year 11 months ago

While Diablo IV has been announced for a bit now, we’re finally getting a proper look at some gameplay. Blizzard showed off a cinematic trailer during the Xbox and Bethesda showcase today, which you can check out down below:

The trailer itself definitely evokes an eerie vibe that’s a far cry from Diablo III, which had been criticized for looking a little too bright and happy clappy. Blizzard also revealed that the Necromancer class would be playable at launch, which is definitely exciting news for series fans who love summoning the undead.

Aside from the cinematic trailer, Blizzard also dropped a gameplay trailer showing off various environments and some character customization elements. The game will feature giant world bosses that you can take on during certain times, and just like in previous games in the series, you can team up with other players to loot together.

As Dusk Falls Is a Psychological Drama Releasing in July

1 year 11 months ago

Today during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, a new trailer was shown for the upcoming game As Dusk Falls. It also got a release date; the interactive drama will be launching on July 19.

The trailer showcased in-game capture that showcased some of the scenes and gameplay that can be expected in As Dusk Falls, which was originally announced about two years ago. It teases family secrets and choices that will profoundly affect the outcome of the game.

If you missed what As Dusk Falls is all about, here’s what the Xbox website has to say about the game:

As Dusk Falls is an original interactive drama from INTERIOR/NIGHT that explores the entangled lives of two families across thirty years in small town Arizona. Starting with a robbery-gone-wrong in 1999, the choices you make will have powerful impact on the characters’ lives in this epic story of betrayal, sacrifice and resilience.

As Dusk Falls features a unique visual technique in its art style called rotoscoping, which creates animation by tracing motion picture footage frame by frame to produce realistic action. It certainly gives the game a distinct and memorable style.

You’ll be able to play As Dusk Falls solo or with up to eight friends.

As Dusk Falls will release next month on July 19, so the wait won’t last too much longer. It will be available on day one via Game Pass on Xbox and on PC. You can watch the trailer from today’s showcase below.

Cocoon Is A New Game From Inside And Limbo Designer

1 year 11 months ago

Xbox has a history of showing off some of our favorite indies during its big showcases, and it looks like it's keeping that tradition alive and well. During the platform's Summer Game Fest event today, we got our first glimpse at a new project from Limbo and Inside lead designer Jeppe Carlsen.

Cocoon, published by Annapurna Interactive, which has a showcase of its own next month, promises to be a mind-bending experience with an undeniably compelling art style. The creators promise to take players "on an adventure across worlds within worlds," which are represented by a series of unusual glowing orbs in the trailer. The clip begins with a sweeping and stylized view of a desert landscape which is soon disturbed by a blinding beam of white light. Our hero pops out of a mechanical-looking cocoon energized by the laser and appears to be a kind of beetle. We mostly see it grabbing and distributing globes of various colors, which may allow it to jump to different locations.

There's not a lot to glean from this reveal trailer, but the game's Steam page goes into a little more detail.

Diablo IV's Fifth Class Is The Necromancer, See It In Action

1 year 11 months ago

We still don't have a firm Diablo IV release date yet (other than 2023), but we now know every class we can play when it eventually releases. The necromancer joins the previously announced barbarian, sorceress, rogue, and druid, all allowing for high levels of customization.

As you dive into dangerous open areas, you'll be hunting the disciples of Lilith, the daughter of hatred. In new gameplay footage, developer Blizzard Entertainment says Diablo IV offers over 150 dungeons, along with territories to reclaim, and story sequences that occur as you explore. Some of these story moments could lead to massive boss battles that require numerous players.

Diablo IV offers cross-play between console and PC, and also two-player couch play for people in the same household. If you play a bunch and become incredibly powerful, the game will highlight you as a champion, which other players can see. Along with the high number of dungeons, Blizzard claims the endgame is deep and will continue to expand years after release.

Blizzard says they are close to completing development, but has only given an open 2023 timeframe for release.

Team Ninja Reveals Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Releasing Early 2023

1 year 11 months ago

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Revealed Early 2023

Koei Tecmo Games and Team Ninja have revealed Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and it’s coming to Xbox consoles and PC next year.

Revealed during today’s Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty looks quite similar to Team Ninja’s Nioh series in that it features a ninja-like character fighting against not just humans, but monstrous and demonic monsters, too. The reveal trailer, which you can watch below, doesn’t feature any gameplay but it gave us quite the taste of Fallen Dynasty’s world.

As you can see in the trailer above, the character that appears to be the protagonist of Fallen Dynasty is fighting off barbarian enemies before consuming something that turns them into a massive demon dragon monster that looks terrifying. Here’s what the trailer description for Fallen Dynasty says about the game:

“Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty follows the dramatic, action-packed story of a nameless militia soldier fighting for survival in a dark fantasy version of the Later Han Dynasty where demons plague the Three Kingdoms. Players fight off deadly creatures and enemy soldiers using swordplay based on the Chinese martial arts, attempting to overcome the odds by awakening the true power from within.”

It looks great, albeit a little scary, and fortunately, we don’t have to wait too long to check it out because Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty hits Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC in early 2023.

Minecraft Legends Announced During Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase

1 year 11 months ago

Announced during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, Minecraft is now dipping its toes into a whole new genre. Minecraft Legends will be Mojang trying its hands at an “action strategy game.” There was definitely action to be seen as the player character was shown leading groups of friendly monsters to battle.

Seeing as this is also Minecraft, there is somewhat automated building shown but it seems you will be able to create outposts for a break from the action. It’s unusual to see Minecraft from the perspective shown, but there is definitely something cool about leading around an army of classic Minecraft monsters.

You can watch the reveal trailer for yourself below:

Just as with Minecraft Dungeons, Legends will be multi-platform for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Seeing as it’s also a Minecraft title, it will be no doubt releasing on Game Pass on day one.

Scorn Emerges From The Dark For New Trailer

1 year 11 months ago

Ebb Software showed a new trailer for Scorn at today’s Xbox Games Showcase, and the first-person horror adventure continues to look just as disturbing as ever.

Drawing clear lines of inspiration from the famous artist, H.R. Giger, Scorn features some of the same disconcerting imagery that is a part of the art from movies like Alien, in which biological and mechanical elements seem to merge.

The new trailer continues to embrace those elements, with more than a little bit of body horror mixed in for good measure. The video shows numerous instances of disconnected human appendages attached to strange, non-human machines and creatures. And the protagonist appears to be horribly mutilated in the brief glimpses we get of their arms and other body parts.

Ebb has stated in the past that Scorn is aiming for a cohesive “lived-in” world, in which players are thrown in the deep-end by arriving and having to try and grasp what is even happening in the spaces they explore. Environments are said to be maze-like and individual regions are open and exploreable, but interconnected with other distinct spaces.

The developers are also touting the game’s focus on full-body awareness. Rather than have items simply floating in the world and having them picked up by magic, every object is a real thing that your character must lift or move with their own hands, hopefully leading to a greater sense of immersion. And, given the subject matter, a likely greater sense of disquiet.

Minecraft Legends Is an Action Strategy Spin-Off Coming in 2023

1 year 11 months ago

After delving into dungeon crawling and narrative adventures, Minecraft is getting another unexpected spin-off - this time becoming an action strategy game. The new game is coming in 2023.

Revealed at today's Xbox-Bethesda showcase, Minecraft Legends is an action strategy game that combines real-time strategy elements into the world of Minecraft.

In a brief gameplay video, a character on a horse is seen leading an army of minions into battle with the ability to command the legion in real-time.

As one of the world's biggest ever games, Minecraft needs little introduction. It success has led to multiple spin-offs, from Telltale's Minecraft: Story Mode – a narrative adventure starring Patton Oswalt – to Minecraft Dungeons, a Diablo-like dungeon crawler we said was a little shallow, but "so damn charming, and so fun, it's hard to fault it for going the safe route."

This sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence looked stunning in this latest trailer, showcasing realistic flame and lighting effects, the many treacherous paths the siblings must take, and of a few thousand rats to top it all off.
