Tekken Boss Blasts Anti-Video Games Law by Japanese Prefecture That Feels Like an April Fools Joke

4 years 1 month ago

Today is April 1, which means that we can expect a lot of April Fools jokes and pranks all over the internet, and yet we see things that should be jokes but are indeed disturbingly real.

Today a new ordinance pushed by the prefectural assembly of Kagawa Prefecture, in the Japanese island of Shikoku, went into effect, and it definitely could qualify as a great April Fools prank. Only, it isn’t.

The “Net Game Addiction Measures Ordinance” was passed on April 18 and forbids minors under 18 years of age from playing games more than 60 minutes a day, with the limit increased to 90 minutes in the Holidays.

On top of that, students up to junior high school cannot use their smartphones after 9:00 pm, while older students (but still under 18) have that limit increased to 10:00 pm.

While the title of the ordinance mentions “net games,” it actually applies to all internet and computer games played at home and in public, including home and portable console games, online games, and arcades.

Reacting to the ordinance today is (among others) Tekken series producer and director Katsuhiro Harada, who took to Twitter to blast the regulatory action.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Devs Talk Combat & Action in Third “Inside” Episode

4 years 1 month ago

Square Enix has published the third episode of its Inside Final Fantasy VII Remake video documentary series, and this time it details the creative processes behind the game’s action-RPG combat.

Specifically, we hear from producer Yoshinori Kitase, battle director Teruki Endo, co-director of game design & programming Naoki Hamaguchi, and leader battle designers Kosuke Sakane and Tomotaka Shiroichi.

The team provides some fascinating insight on how they arrived at the idea to balance traditional ATB battle system mechanics with some more akin to a modern action game.

If you aren’t up to speed already with the options that Final Fantasy VII Remake gives you to adjust the game’s combat to your preference then all of that is explained, too.

You can check out the new episode for yourself below.

To watch a previous episode of the Inside series, here’s one on the origins of the game’s development.

Azur Lane: Crosswave for PS4 and PC Gets New Gameplay Showing Taihou DLC in Action

4 years 1 month ago

Today Compile Heart released two new videos of the upcoming DLC for Azur Lane: Crosswave.

To be more precise, we get to see Episode Taihou, which is the first DLC featuring the ultra-yandere aircraft carrier.

Incidentally, the second video also showcases Saint Louis, who is one of the three support/secretary only shipgirls who will come with Taihou.

We already know that five DLC have been announced: the second DLC will be Formidable, the third will be Roon, the fourth will be Le Malin, and the fifth will be Sirius.

In the video, we get to see both battle gameplay and storytelling similar to the base game. The main difference is that Taihou is the protagonist, but the DLC doesn’t reinvent the wheel. It’ll be released this month, but the precise date is still unknown. Idea Factory International hasn’t provided info about the western release either.

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Getting X-02S Strike Wyvern Model in Osean Color

4 years 1 month ago

Today Kotobukiya made a brand new plastic model kit available for pre-order that will please fans of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.

The model kit portrays the same X-02S Strike Wyvern released last year, but this time around it’s in Osean color as opposed to Erusean.

You can find it on Ami Ami for 3,960 yen, which translates into approximately $37.

It’s prepainted and assembly can be done without glue thanks to pieces that will snap into place, so it’s a fairly easy kit. Yet, you should keep in mind that it comes with water-based decals, so that could be slightly more challenging for newbies compared to simple stickers.

Various “moving” parts like the variable wings, engine nozzles, and landing gear are simulated simply by replacement parts.

Incidentally, if you prefer the original version in Erusean colors, which has been sold-out for a while, that is also being reprinted and has its own pre-orders available.

The scale is a fairly small 1/144, while the release window for both models is August 2020.

You can check out a few pictures below.

Speaking of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, we just learned that it’s getting more DLC aircraft, even if we still don’t know any details.

Pokemon GO System to Temporarily Let You Raid From Home Revealed

4 years 1 month ago

Earlier this week, Niantic released a statement detailing their plans to make their games playable from home. This includes the ability to let you take part in Pokemon GO raids from the comfort of your own home.

Among these promised changes included a way to allow players to join in on raid battles from the safety of their own homes. Just today, the first step in that change seems to be taking place.

It was announced earlier today that the distance you need to be away from a gym in order to interact with it is going to be doubled. This is sure to help many players reach gyms that were previously too far away to be accessed from their homes.

However, this obviously doesn’t do much for players who aren’t within a few blocks of a gym. We’ll have to keep our ear to the ground about any rumblings of a more extensive raid from home system coming in the near future.

For now, it looks like you at least won’t need to walk as far to reach gyms if you don’t have any nearby. Besides raids, this means you can also spin the gym’s photo disc, battle the gym or defend the gym from further away.

Obviously, this will only be a temporary change. And Niantic has understandably not given a timeline on when any of these changes will return to normal.

They also noted that these changes will only apply to the gyms in Pokemon GO. Pokestops that are out of reach at the standard distance will remain that way.

CoD: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered Trailer Is Typically Explosive; PS4 Launch is Today

4 years 1 month ago

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s remastered campaign is official and it’s announced today with an explosive trailer typical of the franchise. The sequence reminds us of the story’s high stakes, as Soap, Shepherd, Ghost and other familiar faces fight back against Vladimir Makarov and the inner circle.

The remaster comes somewhat out of the blue after rumors of its release came thick and fast over the past few days. Now the details are out and its release set in stone — available first on PS4 from today, while other platforms launch later on April 30 (pre-purchase is available from today).

The remaster is set to feature improved graphics and performance; presumably, that includes tweaks to its lighting, frame rate, and sharpened textures as is typical. Full details are yet to be disclosed by Activision.

Notably, No Russian, the controversial level in which players walk through an airport massacring civilians, is reportedly still in the game.

Airhead Partners Up Head and Body In New Metroidvania-Style Platformer

4 years 1 month ago

Handy Games, the German studio behind the mobile game Rebel Cops, has dropped an announcement trailer for Airhead, a new Metroidvania-style platformer where two parts of a whole person have to save each other as they try to solve their way through the bleak yet beautiful world of cold-hearted machines and air tanks.

A symbiotic being named Head is left to die after a machine of unknown origin steals its air supply. Body, another being, witnesses its breath literally being taken away, and it decides to help by carrying the weight of Head’s fate on its shoulders, thus becoming Airhead.

As Airhead searches far and wide for the machine that stole Head’s air-giving heart and rendered it asthmatic, deflating and reliant on air tanks along the way, they’ll come to discover that the machine and Head may be two small pieces connected to a far grander scheme than either Body or Head could’ve ever imagined.

Throughout your journey, the game will give you puzzles that make you determine whether to use Head and Body separately or together, exploring the unique mechanics of Head’s detachability. You will also encounter other machines and creatures that will serve as roadblocks delaying Head’s survival or allies aiding you along the caverns to uncover the secrets behind the connection of Head, the air tanks that it must consume like candy — this, as well as the game’s title, is a clever callback to the colorful taffy we were all addicted to back in the 1990s and early 2000s — and the technology that comprises the world in which they live in so that Body can save Head’s life even if it may have to sacrifice itself in the process.

Check out the mind-blowing announcement trailer below.

Minecraft Dungeons Gets May Release Date; No Cross-Play at Launch

4 years 1 month ago

Publisher Xbox Game Studios has today revealed the launch date of Minecraft Dungeons, the anticipated dungeon crawler spin-off set within the popular Minecraft universe. The game will launch on May 26 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

It’s a slight delay from the April launch window originally disclosed back at X019, which the publisher blames on logistical challenges brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. Xbox Game Studios cites wanting “to guarantee the health and safety of our teams, and empower them to deliver the best possible experience to the community.”

Pre-orders of Minecraft Dungeons will kick off from today for some platforms. There are two editions of the game available Standard Edition” for $19.99 USD and “Minecraft Dungeons – Hero Edition” for $29.99 USD. The Hero Edition contains a Hero Pass that includes a Hero Cape, two player skins, a chicken pet and two upcoming DLC packs.

Other information included with today’s press release includes confirmation that cross-platform play will not be available at launch. The team is apparently working to bring the feature to the game as a free update in the future.

Animal Crossing Player Turns the Game Into a Competitive Multiplayer Title With This Obstacle Course

4 years 1 month ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons doesn’t have any competitive multiplayer components or game modes built into the experience but that’s not stopping creative players from figuring out different ways for people to win money by competing in a variety of games.

Yesterday, I reported on a Reddit video that popped up over the weekend that shows players enjoying a game of musical chairs in which the winner would acquire a huge bag of Bells to help pay off their loans but today, a user that goes by SkeletonwhisKey posted a video of them and their friends going head-to-head in an obstacle course.

It was created by using the terraforming tools that you obtain once you surpass several key narrative points in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and it looks like a lot of fun.

SkeletonwhisKey spent about two-three hours to design this course so if you want some inspiration for things you can do with friends online, make sure to watch the video down below:

Here’s Why The Pyramid of Wrath Is Still Persona 5’s Best Dungeon

4 years 1 month ago

Persona 5 Royal is finally out today, and it adds a lot — and I mean a lot — of new story content. As if the 100 hour playtime of the original game wasn’t enough already, Atlus thought adding even more new stuff on top of that would be a great idea. I’ve played and beaten Persona 5 Royal. I’ve seen the new stuff. It’s quite good, but not as impressive as a certain dungeon from the vanilla game: the Pyramid of Wrath.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the Pyramid of Wrath dungeon and Futaba Sakura’s character arc in Persona 5.

By far the biggest issue with Persona 5 was the weak main cast. As I outlined in my review of the original game, they all just felt like reskinned and less interesting versions of characters we’d already seen in past games in the series. There are a couple of standouts, but far and away the best and most well-written character in this game is Futaba Sakura.

The reason for that is simple: she’s the only character in the game (for base Persona 5, at least) who gets an entire dungeon dedicated to her and her inner self. The theme of Persona 5 centers around stealing the hearts of bad guys and criminals, and because of that, the dungeons are designed around the psyches of these villains that we’re only going to see for a short while before they disappear for the rest of the game.

That, in and of itself, is already an issue with the very foundation of Persona 5 because the game spends so much time focusing on these minor villains, all without pushing the main plot forward until a little more than halfway through its runtime, and without giving real development to the main characters.

Wasteland 3 Delayed by 3 Months, inXile Announces

4 years 1 month ago

inXile Entertainment’s upcoming RPG Wasteland 3 has been delayed until summer as a result of logistical challenges brought about by the coronavirus pandemic. The game will now launch on August 28, moved 3 months from its original May 19 date.

The news comes by way of a note from studio head Brian Fargo, who conveys his disappointment over the delay but points to positives as a consolation. He explains the team plans to use the extra time “acting on Beta feedback and suggestions, optimization, polishing and refinements, and making sure we have an awesome co-op experience.”

You can read the statement in full below.

As with most companies, we moved to a work-from-home environment some weeks ago, and that’s of course introduced new challenges that many of us throughout the world have been learning to manage. We’ve been excited to see the Wasteland 3 Beta so well received, but the reality is that with these new logistical challenges our release was going to be impacted.

We’re in a great position with both Microsoft and Deep Silver supporting our desire to ensure the game launches in the best possible circumstances, and to add a few extra months to ensure this is a stellar product on day one. With that, Wasteland 3’s new release date is August 28, 2020.

That’s time we’re putting into acting on Beta feedback and suggestions, optimization, polishing and refinements, and making sure we have an awesome co-op experience. We’re pouring our hearts into this game, and the last thing we want is to have anything but an amazing launch for a product we truly believe in.

We appreciate everyone’s excitement and continued support as we put a few more months into ensuring that on launch day Wasteland 3 is the experience you’ve been waiting for.

Persona 5 Royal’s New Content Is Worth Another 100 Hours of Your Life… Probably

4 years 1 month ago

The Persona games are long. I mean, they’re really ridiculously long. One playthrough of any of the recent three Persona games can easily take up to a hundred hours, and with Persona 5 Royal, that playtime is about to go up even further.

I won’t mince words here. When I first played the original Persona 5, I managed to clear the game in about 85 hours, and that was with me rushing and skipping voiced dialogue once I’d finished reading the text. When Atlus claimed that Persona 5 Royal would add another 20 to 30 hours of content on top of that, they weren’t lying. My playtime is at 120 hours right now, and again, I was definitely rushing a little to get my review out in time.

Atlus certainly went all out with the new content: two new Confidants, expanded stories and events for certain characters, new abilities for everyone, improved combat mechanics, huge Mementos overhaul… the list goes on. The amount of new content in Persona 5 Royal is insanely staggering and overwhelming, and even before you dive into the meat of the actual new story stuff, you’ll have a lot of new mechanics and little additions to contend with.

So, is all that stuff worth playing through this massive JRPG yet again? The answer, as much as it might sound like a total cop out, is that it depends.

You see, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the original Persona 5. You can read my review to find out why, but my complaints centered around the main cast of characters being underdeveloped and feeling like missed opportunities. I went into Royal believing that this would be the definitive version of the game, and that all the new content would make me finally love Persona 5.

Alas, it wasn’t quite meant to be.

Gamescom Expanding Online Strategy due to Coronavirus; Physical Event Will Be Evaluated in Mid-May

4 years 1 month ago

Many gaming events have already been cancelled or postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, but the organizers of Gamescom in Germany aren’t giving up just yet.

Today they reached out with a press release to announce that the event will not be postponed and will definitely take place at least online in its scheduled dates from August 25 to August 29. Yet, the format remains to be seen.

The plan is being revised by “significantly expanding” the online portion of the event, with Gamescom: Opening Night Live and Gamescom Now receiving new modules.

The same goes for the Devcom developer conference to be held between August 22 and 24 August.

As for the physical event at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany, it might still happen. An evaluation will take place in mid-May as to how it can take place “based on the latest developments of the corona pandemic at that time together with the responsible state authorities.”

If holding the physical event is possible, more information will be released at that stage on which changes may need to be made in order to ensure the health of all visitors. This has already been arranged with the largest exhibitors.

On the other hand, if gamescom or devcom cannot take place physically, both visitors who already purchased tickets and exhibitors will be refunded.

Managing director Felix Falk accompanied the press release with a statement:

The Outer Worlds Is Coming to Nintendo Switch in June

4 years 1 month ago

The Outer Worlds is coming to Nintendo Switch both physically and digitally later this spring, June 6.

The announcement comes by way of an official blog post earlier today by developer Obsidian Entertainment, which not only confirmed the date but also detailed the physical package. The Outer Worlds’ physical edition comes on a cartridge, and it’s “accompanied by a day one patch that could be up to 6 GB.”

It’s explained that the patch “will optimize gameplay, provide additional hi-res textures, and include other fixes to provide the employees of Halcyon with the best gameplay experience.”

Both digital and physical editions of the game cost $59.99.

The Outer Worlds is an action-RPG played from a first-person perspective. It’s heavily inspired by the Fallout series, a franchise that Obsidian Games has previously been involved with as the team behind Fallout: New Vegas.

The Outer Worlds launched on PS4, Xbox One, and PC last year to critical acclaim. Twinfinite reviewed it and was similarly impressed, scoring it 4/5 and concluding that “its story and narrative were consistently engrossing.”

The game has gone on to record notable commercial success; publisher Take-Two Interactive confirmed sales of The Outer Worlds were 2 million as part of its financial report last month.

Muv-Luv Series Gets New Official Website, Stylish Artwork for Muv-Luv Alternative Anime, and More

4 years 1 month ago

Today aNCHOR opened a brand new official website for its popular Muv-Luv series.

The website is available both in Japanese and in English, and it includes a rather extensive introduction to the Muv-Luv worlds, its games, and additional products like manga, books, and more.

We also get a handy timeline in English, which you can find in the gallery at the bottom of the post. Considering that the setting is rather complex and branching, it’s good to have a visual guide.

The site also includes news like the shift of the content scheduled for Comiket to an online event, with a questionnaire for Doujinshi circles (only in Japanese) which would like to take part in such event, titled Comikeaid.

Last, but not least, we also get a teaser page for the recently-announced Muv-Luv Alternative anime, including two stylish pieces of artwork (portraying a Type-00 Takemikazuchi TSF) that you can enjoy in the gallery.

Arc World Tour 2020 Canceled by Arc System Works Due to Coronavirus

4 years 1 month ago

Today Arc System Works reached out with a press release to announce the cancellation of Arc World Tour 2020.

CEO Minoru Kidooka decided to cancel the tour due to the Novel Coronavirus pandemic.

Below you can read a statement that came with the press release:

“The health of our competitors, staff members and community members is our top priority. This decision also comes at the face of increased difficulty in facilitating a fair competition throughout the tour. We regret to inform those who have been eagerly anticipating this tour of its cancellation. We thank you for your understanding.

We will be making decisions regarding future ARC WORLD TOUR events (2021) based on global conditions as Coronavirus news develops.”

That being said, the developer is considering holding Arcrevo Japan 2020 and Arc World Tour 2020 finals as independent events, while keeping in mind participants’ safety as the top priority.

A decision and possible details on this will be provided at a later date.

If Arcrevo Japan 2020 is held, it’ll be on July 18, and the finals of Arc World Tour would also be hosted in their original time frame.

Arcrevo Korea and Daredevil events are canceled entirely, while Arc System works plans to facilitate online tournaments independently of the World Tour.

Speaking of Arc System Works, the studio is currently developing Guilty Gear -Strive- for PS4.

Dead or Alive 6 Will Get its “Final” DLC This Month

4 years 1 month ago

Koei Tecmo’s fighting game Dead or Alive 6 already had four season passes, but apparently it won’t come close to Dead or Alive 5: Last Round’s record.

Today Koei Tecmo announced via Twitter its plans to release two DLC packages in mid-April alongside update 1.22, but we also learn that they will be the last.

The new DLC costumes will be part of the “revival” series. That indicates costumes recycled from the previous game and repurposed for 6, sold outside of the season passes.

To be more specific, we’re getting the High Society set and the School Uniforms set.

As mentioned above, this will be the “final” set of DLC, even if online features and the store will still remain available.

Think You’re a Real Tolkienite? Take This Lord of the Rings Quiz to Find Out

4 years 1 month ago

J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series has the most in-depth stories, characters, and world that literature has ever seen. And it was from those building blocks that Peter Jackson was able to adapt the series into incredible movies as well.

Being huge Tolkienites, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to create a quiz devoted to the vast well of info and trivia that appears throughout both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Do you think you’ve got what it takes?

Keep in mind that this quiz features questions from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie trilogies. That means some answers may be different from what Tolkien wrote in the books versus what Peter Jackson adapted into the movies.
