War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius Interview: Producer Talks Gameplay, Global Version & More

Square Enix recently released War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius in the west, a game that many consider a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy Tactics.

To learn more about the game, Twinfinite interviewed global version producer Hiroki Fujimoto, who provided plenty of information on what we can expect.

Questions were provided by yours truly and our editor-in-chief Ed McGlone.

Twinfinite: War of the Visions Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is obviously inspired by the tactical-RPG gameplay of Final Fantasy Tactics. One element of Final Fantasy Tactics that players really enjoyed was mixing and matching the variety of different Jobs to leverage the environment and the grid-based battle system. Can you explain for Final Fantasy Tactics fans how Jobs will work in War of the Visions Final Fantasy Brave Exvius?

Hiroki Fujimoto: A variety of Jobs appear in WOTV FFBE as well. Each character has two Sub Jobs in addition to their Main Job, and these are unlocked as your characters grow. Players can choose to switch their characters’ Jobs before heading into battle to better counter different field layouts or their opponents’ Jobs.

For example, if a character has the Dragoon and Ninja Sub Jobs, the player can choose to fight as a Dragoon in fields featuring elevational differences because they’re able to take advantage of the Jump ability there, while they can choose to fight as a Ninja in fields without elevational differences because they’re able to use the long-range attack Shuriken instead. In this way, players can carry out battles to their advantage based on their own strategies.

The Island Villager’s Guide to Proper Turnip Etiquette in Animal Crossing

If you play Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you probably have at least heard about buying and selling turnips in order to make a profit. Daisy Mae sells the turnips on Sunday mornings, and then you have the week to sell them to the Nooklings, hopefully making more bells than you spent.

It’s a bit risky, though, since the turnip prices on your own island might not yield a profit during the week. That’s why generous members of the Animal Crossing community have been opening the gates to their islands when their turnip prices are high.

Visiting someone’s island to sell turnips (or for any other reason) can be essential to making a profit. But if guests aren’t respectful, it could turn into a disaster for the host and make them rethink inviting people in the future.

Here are some tips for having good etiquette when visiting another player’s island to sell turnips.

Cloudpunk Has You Fly Deliveries in a Neon-Soaked Dystopian City

There aren’t many games that allow you to fly around a futuristic city in the vein of Blade Runner or The Fifth Element, but Cloudpunk is one of them. Launched yesterday on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, the indie exploration game from developer Ion Lands tasks players with navigating a rainy, neon-soaked metropolis as they deliver packages to potentially unscrupulous clients.

As per the game’s description over on its Steam page:

“Your name is Rania. This is your first night working for Cloudpunk, the semi-legal delivery company based in the sprawling city of Nivalis. You go everywhere, from the Marrow below to the spires that pierce the grey clouds high above before scraping the edge of the troposphere. No delivery job is too dangerous, and no one is faster than a Cloudpunk driver.”

It’s the aesthetic that has caught our eye in particular, though; the pixel art meets 3D art-style brings to life an eerie dystopia set high in the clouds, where city streets explode in color with advertisement boards and bright lights. It’s 80s cyberpunk to the core, complete with suitably ambient music.

Reviews over on Steam are so far very positive, and if you’re interested in pulling then trigger then there’s a discount promotion running through until the end of the month.

Check out the launch trailer below.

Final Fantasy XIV Update 5.3 Will Bring Tons of New Content & Features & Flying Mounts in ARR Areas

Today Square Enix broadcasted a new Final Fantasy XIV Letter from the Producer Live, focusing on the next major patch.

Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida and Global Community Producer Toshio Murouchi provided a lot of information about the upcoming update 5.3.

The livestream started with Yoshida-san reading a letter from a medical worker fighting against COVID-19 on the frontline, who thanked the development team for the game that helps them relax after work. Yoshida-san mentioned that it’s the development team that is thankful to health professionals for their hard work during the pandemic.

They’re doing their best to keep the game going so that players can come online and relax despite the situation outside.

The whole development team is currently working from home, and they encourage all players to stay home safely and enjoy the game.

Originally, update 5.3 was scheduled to launch in mid-June. Progress on development was a bit beyond 70%. Yoshida-san was planning to do his usual checks on the content in mid-April, but at that time it was decided to shift the whole team to teleworking.

Voice actors from all over the world made an effort to record their lines for the main story quest of update 5.3, so all the voice data is actually ready.

Developers working from home have access to a local server so they’re able to test their content before sending it to the central internal datacenter. That way they can find bugs and issues pretty easily.

This is very different from how things usually work in Japan, because teleworking isn’t widespread and security is usually very tight, shutting out any connection from outside of the company. The new teleworking situation changed this radically for the development team and opening the tools to be used from home created challenges.

160,000 Nintendo Accounts Potentially Hacked in Major Security Breach

Nintendo has today confirmed that the privacy of 160,000 Nintendo Accounts may have been breached in a major security leak, which has been on-going throughout April.

Hackers illegally acquired login details for the Nintendo Network ID system (NNID), a feature of the company’s online infrastructure since the Wii U and 3DS days. It would have allowed them to see the private information of those users, including their names, alias, gender, date of birth, etc.

While credit card information remained secure, hackers were still able to make purchases via the eShop. According to Eurogamer, Fortnite V-Bucks were the most commonly purchased item.

Nintendo has since disabled its NNID log-in system and plans to reset all passwords before reopening the service. As you’ll see in the below Tweet from Nintendo’s UK branch, head over to the company’s support page for more information on setting up a two-step verification process if you’re concerned about security.

Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris Delayed Due to Coronavirus Pandemic

Today Bandai Namco announced with a note on the official website of Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris that the game has been delayed.

The new release date for Japan is July 9, 2020. The delay has not been announced for the west yet, but we can expect it to come shortly and likely to stick to a similar data since the planned release in North America and Europe was May 22, one day after the Japanese launch.

Update: As expected, we just received word from Bandai Namco that the western release is delayed to July 10.

The announcement cites that the state of emergency declared due to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused development delays, so the decision to postpone the game’s release has been taken in order to prioritize the safety of everyone involved in development.

The message ends with an apology for any inconvenience caused and thanks for understanding.

Elijah Wood Is the Most Polite Animal Crossing Player Ever

Since its official release a month ago, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been the go-to game for Switch owners dealing with quarantine. And the same goes for Hollywood actor Elijah Wood, apparently.

Just yesterday, Twitter user Jessa (@directedbyrian) tweeted out that her Nook’s Cranny turnip prices were high (a whopping 599 Bells for turnips), and that anyone looking to sell their turnips could DM her for her Dodo code. Expectedly, people on Twitter began to ask for her code and visit her island for some money-making action. Among those people was Elijah Wood himself. As it turns out, Hollywood celebrities need to make Bells off their turnips too.

Trials of Mana Review – A Remade Relic

Trials of Mana on PlayStation 4

There are few things worse than seeing a beloved title receive a full remake, only for said remake to make its flaws more apparent and even add on some new ones. Such is the case with Trials of Mana, which offers some significant surface level improvements at the cost of maintaining and creating major issues that are impossible to ignore.

Like the original title, the remake sees the world’s mana at risk of disappearing due to dark forces seeking out and disrupting the flow of mana throughout the world. As a result, six chosen heroes are dragged into the conflict, and players must choose three of said heroes to form a party and put an end to the evil plots about to be set into motion.

It’s the kind of simple setup one would expect from a classic JRPG, and it still largely works in the remake. Players won’t have long to wait before they’re in the thick of the game’s action, and having the choice of several different heroes to form a party from makes for some interesting variety in how the story plays out.

Epic Games Store Offers For The King Free This Week

The Epic Games Store continues to offer at least one free game each week since the launch of its PC digital storefront in 2018 with For The King available for free starting today.

For The King fully launched in 2018, after a successful Kickstarter and a year of Steam Early Access, and eventually came to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

The game is a strategy roguelike with turn-based combat and procedural maps, quests, and events. It can be played in single-player and co-op either locally or online. It also contains all four expansions released since its launch.

It was originally announced as an Epic Games Store free offer last January, but was replaced by Sundered: Eldritch Edition. It is available for free starting today until next Thursday, April 30 at 11 a.m. ET.

Epic Games also announced the free title lineup for next week including first person survival horror game Amnesia: The Dark Descent and story-driven crafting action RPG Crashlands.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent launched for PC in 2010 followed by two expansions and was ported to consoles in the last few years. A direct sequel, Amnesia: Rebirth, was announced last month and is scheduled to release for Steam and PlayStation 4 sometime this fall.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Shows That Pacing, Not Linearity, Is Final Fantasy XIII’s Problem

Final Fantasy VII Remake is the latest release in that venerable JRPG franchise, and the reviews are in. We thought it was fantastic here at Twinfinite, and that positivity seems to be the general consensus amongst both fans and other critics.

Playing through it though, I couldn’t help but notice some striking similarities between it and its 2009 predecessor, Final Fantasy XIII, which is somewhat more of a divisive title amongst long-time fans. It got me wondering why the former is praised for something that the latter is often dinged for: the layout of its maps and the general structure of its world.

Remake’s Midgar is a fantastically realized place, the game feels great to play, and the soundtrack is undeniably incredible. But it’s also a very linear experience. And linear, in the vernacular of modern Final Fantasy fans, is something of a dirty word.

Linear (in the context of Final Fantasy) evokes thoughts of the endless hallways, tunnels, and passages that made up the floating world of Cocoon. There are side paths in Final Fantasy XIII that would veer off the beaten track that might contain treasure or optional enemy encounters, but in all, exploration was a guided experience.

The notable exception to this rule was during Chapter 11, and it is to this section of the game on Gran Pulse that the notorious phrase “it gets better after 20 hours” refers to. Here you are able to explore several large open areas and engage in a series of hunts and missions as you see fit, offering a sense of freedom that the earlier chapters lacked.

The Waylanders’ Enchanting Celtic Landscape on Display in New Video & Screenshots

Spanish developer Gato Studio has provided an update to its Kickstarter backers today on the development of its upcoming fantasy RPG, The Waylanders. The team is showcasing the beautiful landscape of Kaltia in much greater detail than we’ve seen before via a new video a screenshot collection.

If you haven’t heard of the upcoming RPG, The Waylanders is the story of an adventurer untethered by time and fate who travels between a mythological Celtic age and the stone and mortar construction of the Medieval era. The former has been overtaken by magickal corruption, and the kingdom, once peaceful, has splintered into multiple factions warring for the throne.

The game features real-time combat with a tactical pause option and allows players to experience the action from either a top-down view or third-person camera. There will be 12 changeable party formations to play with as you alternate between Celtic and Medieval Ages.

Waylanders was first revealed back at Gamescom 2019 with a striking trailer that teed up its fantasy premise. It certainly caught our eye here at Twinfinite, but today’s progress update is the first significant word we’ve heard from Gato since.

Thankfully, in its message over on Kickstarter, it sounds as though Waylanders is on track for a summer Early Access release. The message also revealed both some new screenshots and the hiring Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie, an experienced writer who joins the already esteemed writing team headed by Chris Avallone (Fallout series) and Mike Laidlaw (Dragon Age series).

You can check out the screenshots below, and the new overview trailer below that showcasing the Celtic Age location of Kaltia in detail.

Today Yostar launched a new Crimson Echoes event in its popular mobile game Azur Lane, featuring new and returning shipgirls.

While the event has been simply called “Crimson Echoes Rerun” in the west, it includes plenty of new shipgirls, so it’s more of a boosted version of the past event from January 2019.

It even includes a couple of interesting “what if” scenarios, since it comes with battleships Kaga and Tosa.

Kaga was originally supposed to be the second Tosa-class battleship before being converted to an aircraft carrier, and Tosa was never completed in the real world.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is Coming to Xbox Game Pass Next Month; Will Replace GTA V

Today Xbox revealed that the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to Xbox Game Pass starting on May 7. Twinfinite’s choice for game of the year of 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 follows the story of Arthur Morgan and his time in the Dutch van der Linde gang of outlaws. It serves a prequel to the equally acclaimed Red Dead Redemption.

Included in the package at no additional cost is RDR2’s online component, Red Dead Online. Red Dead Online allows players to create their own character and follow a story within a shared multiplayer experience.

Red Dead Online continues to receive updates, and recently began adding to a feature known as Frontier Pursuits roles. These roles serve as classes or specializations of sorts, and they allow you to drive your character towards excelling in a specific set of skills useful in the wild west such as a Bounty Hunter or a Trader.

With the good, unfortunately comes a little of “bad” however. To make way for the entry of Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto V is stepping aside. On May 7, the day RDR2 arrives on Xbox Game Pass, Grand Theft Auto V will be removed. You can purchase GTA V at a 20% discount between now and May 7 through Xbox Game Pass if you want to keep playing.

Torchlight III Showcases Fort Customization in Latest Trailer

Torchlight III’s announcement took even its own fans by surprise when it was revealed earlier this year. In a welcome but totally out of the blue surprise, Frontiers, an online-only, free-to-play spin-off suddenly morphed into a full-scale sequel.

But as a new trailer showcases today, some of the more interesting innovations slated for the original concept look as though they’re likely to be weaved into Torchlight III in clever ways.

Forts, as you’ll see below, are customizable player-made structures able to be upgraded throughout the game’s campaign. Primarily, they serve as a space to upgrade gear collected during the main loot-driven RPG loop, but you’ll also be able to personalize them with decorations.

In a whimsical tone typical of the franchise, we get to see how starkly different they can appear depending on player preference.

Evicting a Neighbor in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a Guilt-Ridden Task that Will Break You

The time had come.

After being at odds with Admiral for a solid month, I had finally decided that enough was enough. I needed to evict this miserable son of a bitch from my Animal Crossing: New Horizons island, once and for all.

His standoffish tone proved grating from the day he first set foot on Bootyland, and his mere presence had turned my once peaceful morning constitutional into a stressful chore.

“Aye aye”, he’d spout at the end of his sentences — a condescending jibe at my dutiful nature in an effort to undermine everything I had set out to do. I was trying to make this deserted island a home for us, but no matter what I tried, it was never good enough.

So I resolved to dedicate myself to the most thankless endeavor in all of Animal Crossing: getting a villager evicted.

The method to do this has never been made exactly clear, and there’s a lot of misinformation out there. The general assumption is that if you complain enough to Isabelle, in addition to assaulting the unwanted resident with your net on occasion, they would eventually grow tired of your shenanigans and bail out.

Alas, this was having no effect. Admiral seemed as content as ever, plonking himself down on the bench I had lovingly crafted as he sneered at me from afar.

Maybe he was actually a closeted masochist, and all of this negative reinforcement was the highlight of his day?

“Hit me, daddy…” he would snarl under his breath as he absorbed another blow. “Each concussion brings me closer to nirvana!”

Doraemon Story of Seasons PS4 Port Announced for North America and Europe

I didn’t particularly care for her; I’m not a huge fan of koala bears, and she’s –if I’m being frank– not very cute to look at. But I didn’t mind her. She saw me suffer through my first wasp attack and gave me the recipe to craft medicine so I could heal up. She was an acceptable creature to have on the island, but not anymore.

The title is simply The Legend of Heroes: Ao no Kiseki Kai, and it’ll bring back the classic JRPG initially released in Japan for PSP in 2011 and then for PS Vita in 2014.

Unfortunately, it was never officially localized in English, leaving a massive gap for fans of the Trails series. Luckily, a fan translation exists for the PSP version, which is better than nothing.

Anyway, this new release on PS4 could very well reignite hopes for something official, but we haven’t heard anything about it for now. No western publisher has mentioned the intention of bringing it over at the moment of this writing.

You can check out the trailer below.

The Legend of Heroes: Ao no Kiseki Kai will launch in Japan exclusively for PS4 on May 28.

In the meanwhile, the PS4 remaster of the game’s predecessor, The Legend of Heroes: Zero no Kiseki, was released today in Japan. You can check out the trailer for that one as well while we cross our fingers for a localization announcement.

Why Nook Miles Tickets Have Become the Most Coveted ‘Currency’ in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Over the past couple of weeks, I’d finally managed to get K.K. Slider to perform at my island and unlocked the end game terraforming options in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. After beautifying my island and being able to make the layout changes I’d wanted to make since day one, I thought it was a good time to finally dive deep into the game’s community and check out the myriad of third-party websites and tools to help improve my island life. It was eye-opening.

As you’re no doubt aware by now, Animal Crossing: New Horizons might look like a game that’s catered to kids or a younger demographic, but it has capitalist tendencies and undercurrents that might appeal to older players who want to maximize their gains each day. This form of capitalism comes in many forms: turnips and the stalk market, figuring out the best way to farm fish and bugs for CJ and Flick, all in the name of raking in millions of Bells to pay off your home loans and get all the furniture you want.

But that sense of entrepreneurship and capitalism extends beyond the game itself as well.

With the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, new villagers have been introduced into the already large pool of cute anthropomorphic animals who can populate your island. These new faces are easily the most sought after villagers in the game, and since they’re new, there’s no way to get them through amiibo cards. The only way to invite them to your island is through campsite RNG or hoping that you run into them while visiting mystery islands.

And how do you visit mystery islands? With Nook Miles Tickets, of course.

Moto GP 20 Goes Full Throttle in Launch Trailer

Moto GP 20 is out unusually early this year, two months prior to its traditional annual launch window, and a new trailer today celebrates crossing the finish line in style.

Ironically, Moto GP 20 is one of a number of games based on a motorsport season that’s unlikely to ever be completed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the very least, even if the season does finish you’d have to imagine number of the season’s tracks won’t be raced as the GP commission due to a lack of time.

In any case, at least we have video games to tide us over, right? And Moto GP 20 looks to be the best iteration of the esteemed racing franchise yet. As you’ll see teased in the below launch trailer, it boasts a range of new features.

Specifically, these features that include a revised career mode which includes the new personal manager system, the ability to better customize new teams, the option to develop bikes during a midwinter testing phase, and earning and spending developing points to hone the team, rider, and vehicle for the upcoming season.

A breakdown of the game’s new key features is provided in a press release sent to Twinfinite:

Dead by Daylight Mobile Hits 1 Million Downloads in 48 Hours

Dead by Daylight’s new mobile port is proving hugely popular, with the game hitting one million downloads just 48 hours after its April 16 launch on the platform.

In a press release yesterday, Mathieu Côté, game director on Dead by Daylight and product evangelist for Behaviour Interactive said of the news:

“We are incredibly thrilled to see the reaction from players all over the globe. Bringing Dead By Daylight to mobile is a great achievement for the company and doing it while maintaining the core gameplay and all the existing content is something that players are truly appreciating. We want to thank them for their unwavering support of the franchise. And to all the new players out there: Welcome to the Fog!”

For the uninitiated, Dead by Daylight’s 4v1 asymmetric multiplayer design has long been a hit over on consoles and PC. The design sees players engage in a deadly game of cat and mouse as four of them are hunted down by a fifth who takes control of iconic slasher movie killers like Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, or a Demogorgon from Netflix’s Stranger Things.

It’s a gameplay formula that has since been replicated by Capcom with its recent Resident Evil Resistance.

Dead by Daylight’s expansion to mobile platforms is just the latest in a solid live service for the entire franchise, which includes major content expansions such as Chains of Hate update.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Has Shipped Over 350,000 Units

Granblue Fantasy Versus has been released a few months ago, and Cygames provides an update about sales.

According to the developer’s official Twitter account, the game has now passed 350,000 physical shipments and downloads.

This number is quite impressive considering that we’re talking about the console (and PC) debut of an IP that has been stuck on mobile for years and didn’t even get an official western release until now.

It’ll be interesting to see if the upcoming action JRPG Granblue Fantasy Relink will manage to amplify this success.

You can check out the announcement below.
