The English Fate/Stay Night Remaster Is a Dream Come True

2 months 3 weeks ago

The English Fate/Stay Night Remaster Is a Dream Come True

As good as the Fate/ series is, those of us outside of Japan always ended up a bit left out. We’d get all these spin-offs and other adaptations, but the original story eluded us. Like imagine you started with City Slickers 2 instead of the original City Slickers. (Okay, that’s not such a bad idea, since The Legend of Curly’s Gold is the superior film.) But now Type-Moon and Aniplex announced Fate/Stay Night Remastered, obviously a remaster of the original game, with an English language option. And frankly? We deserve this.

As a refresher for those wondering why we didn’t see Fate/Stay Night in English before now, well, it had adult content! Because it was a “mature” game, it didn’t show up 20 years ago when it debuted on PCs in Japan in 2004. Because the anime and manga removed that content, companies like Crunchyroll, Sentai Filmworks, and Tokyopop picked them up.

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster PC Games Patch Adds Classic Font Update

Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster PC Games Patch Adds Font Type Update

Square Enix announced the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster PC games now each got a patch that includes Font Type and BGM (background music) update. Both options originated in the PS4 and Switch versions of the games and are part of the Steam versions’ 1.1.0 update.

While the patch notes for each title may have some additional variations and features, the three “major new features” are present in each one. This means that all six Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster PC games on Steam now have a patch that lets you switch between the “classic” or “modern” style font types, the original or arranged BGM soundtrack, and choose if you use cheats. The cheats are billed as “assistance features” that let you adjust increase (or eliminate) the amount of things like EXP and gil earned from battles. The company didn’t share screenshots or a trailer showing the changes, however.

Visions of Mana Isn’t an Xbox Game Pass Game

2 months 3 weeks ago

While Visions of Mana will be on the Xbox Series X and PC, it will not be among the Xbox Game Pass games at launch. Eurogamer learned from Microsoft will not be a part of the subscription service when it debuts in Summer 2024. [Thanks, Eurogamer!]

The question came up as it briefly appeared on the official Xbox site according to Karim Jovian and Idle Sloth. However, Microsoft then noted this is an error. Visions of Mana won’t be an Xbox Game Pass game for the console and PC at launch. However, the comment from Microsoft did note that it is only not part “at this time.” Due to the nature of the service, this could change.

It isn’t uncommon for Square Enix games like Visions of Mana to show up on the service. For example, all of the Final Fantasy games capable of running on Microsoft platforms were a part of the library at one point. NieR: Automatawas there too. However, as of time of writing there are no notable Square Enix RPGs currently part of Xbox Game Pass.

Honkai: Star Rail Penacony Video Shows Behind the Scenes

Honkai: Star Rail Penacony Behind the Scenes

HoYoverse shared a new Honkai: Star Rail video, this time giving a look behind the scenes of design of the new Penacony world and the 2.0 update. While the trailer does give genuine insight to the developer's design ethos, there is also a humorous tone as the straight-faced interviewer asks increasingly irrelevent questions.

The video begins with a discussion with writer Shaoji about the origins of Penacony, which was originally a penal colony before it became a dream-powered hotel. Shaoji emphasises the contrast between the luxurious dreamscape and the rough past, and notes that the area was originally going to be based on Victorian England and steampunk aesthetics before they settled on Jazz-age theming. Later on, we see comments from concept artist Nio, game designer Dr. Orange, environment artist Baiyu, and gameplay designer Punk. The developers discuss everything from nausea induced by designing optical illusions to the team's obsession with trash cans.

Preview: Mario vs Donkey Kong Switch Remake Feels Nostalgic

Preview: Mario vs Donkey Kong Switch Remake Feels Nostalgic

There have been so many Mario vs Donkey Kong entries that, ahead of the Switch remake, some younger players may not even remember the original GBA game that was a more active puzzle game with Mario as the star. Now that I’ve had a chance to go through some early worlds, including one of the two new ones, it all feels quite comfortable and familiar.

As a reminder, Mario vs Donkey Kong does include the toy minis, just like the more traditional puzzle games, but they’re something you collect instead of guide. Donkey Kong wanted some, they were sold out, so he raided the factory and stole all of them. Mario was walking past when it happened, and so he then chases Donkey Kong through various worlds recovering the missing toys.

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Android Beta Delayed

Square Enix announced on social media that the Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Android Closed Beta Test will be delayed until Spring 2024. The test was initially planned to begin sometime in January 2024.

The Closed Beta Test was postponed after the development team found that there needed to be further adjustments made to make the game fully compatible for a "wider range" of Android devices. Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link's beta test has been scheduled for Spring 2024 in order to be able to accommodate the need to make these adjustments.

Square Enix also revealed that the winners for the Closed Beta Test's access will be announced at a later date alongside a detailed schedule for the test.

The Closed Beta Test for the iOS version of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link took place from November 29, 2023 to December 8, 2023, allowing players from Australia and the United Kingdom to try out the game. Around 1,500 people were able to experience the game back in late 2023. Players were allowed to share video and photos of the game during the Closed Beta Test for the iOS, and are also allowed to share footage for the upcoming Android test.

Review: Persona 3 Reload Is the Best Version of Persona 3

2 months 3 weeks ago

Persona 3 Reload review

You sort of think that once the second and third versions of a game appear, one of those is probably the “best” version of it. Yet somehow, that isn’t the case here. I feel like Persona 3 Reload is the best version of Persona 3 so far. (Though yes, I do still have issues with Tartarus and the erasure of the female protagonist Kotone.)

There’s a hidden hour of every day. Most people don’t realize it, but a select few can actually sense and take part during this 25th hour that comes just between 11:59pm and 12:00am. Players follow a young man who is a newcomer to Tatsumi Port Island and transfer student. He ends up arriving during said Dark Hour, in a dorm with other students who share his potential and fight during it, and eventually joining their Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (SEES) group to fight the hostile Shadow enemies and hopefully end the Dark Hour and Apathy Syndrome spreading throughout the town. This is done while also going through a year of ordinary high school life, complete with classes and tests, interacting with other students, and activities like gardening, using computer software, and taking on part-time jobs.

Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 Are Now Steam Deck Verified

Konami announced that Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 are now Steam Deck verified. Additionally, the Bonus Content of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 is now compatible with Steam Deck as well.

The latest Ver.1.4.1 and Ver.1.4.1D title updates appeared on Steam on January 29, 2024. The update seems to fix some of the issues that appeared when playing on Valve’s handheld gaming computer. However, it is unclear what changes players can expect.

The brief patch notes provided by Konami only confirmed Steam Deck support for Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, and the SteamDB website for MGS2 and MGS3 states the same. SteamDB also informs of fixes to some minor issues and issues related to playing with keyboard and mouse configuration.

Persona 3 Reload Sake Taste Like the Dark Hour

2 months 3 weeks ago

persona 3 reload sake

Hinemos will release several bottles of Japanese sake based on Persona 3 Reload. Pre-orders will open from February 2, 2024.

The sakes all drew inspiration from the Dark Hour and Hinemos likely partnered with Atlus for Persona 3 sake due to its own “time” concept. Hinemos usually releases wine with names like “Ichiji” (1 o’clock) or “Reiji” (Midnight). There will only be a limited supply of these exclusive sakes, so Hinemos encourages consumers to put in their orders as soon as possible. However, depending on the demand, Hinemos might produce more.

The three bottle designs depict the Dark Hour, Aigis, and the Protagonist. The designs are directly on the glass, so you don’t have to worry about them coming off under the water. This means that after you wash the bottles, you can use them as decoration or as a vase. There are three different flavors as well. You can buy them separately or in sets. Buying two bottles as a set will get you a sticker, and buying all three as a set will get you a miniature version of the Kagejikan Tartarus bottle.

Here are the prices, designs, and flavors of each bottle:

Yu Yu Hakusho Hot Springs Commercial Will Air Soon

2 months 3 weeks ago

Jaran, a service for booking trips, will have a collaboration commercial with Yu Yu Hakusho from January 31, 2024. The commercial will feature the main four characters from the show, as well as Toguro (the younger one), relaxing in a hot tub. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

Yusuke’s voice actor, Nozomu Sasaki, will be in charge of narrating the commercial. It will apparently feature lines and familiar catchphrases from the episode previews. Aside from scenes of the character relaxing in a hot tub, it’ll show some cuts from the original anime.

Some preview scenes show Yusuke and Toguro fighting in the Dark Tournament. So, the look of the commercial will change between the show’s retro aesthetic and the more modern art style. Yu Yu Hakusho is an anime and manga series by Yoshihiro Togashi, who later created Hunter x Hunter. It was wildly popular in the 90’s, though recently Netflix produced a live-action adaptation of the show.

Best AYANEO Slide Games: A Starter Guide

best ayaneo slide games

Looking for some fun games to play on the AYANEO Slide after checking out our review? It runs a whole host of things, of course, but we thought we’d dig in on the sorts of games that the Slide does better than other handhelds out there.

Steam Deck compatibility? Who needs it!

The biggest difference between a native Windows handheld and a Steam Deck is the compatibility layer the Deck uses to run games on Linux. It works remarkably well for most games, too! But most ain’t all, and Slide owners can take advantage of incompatible games like the ones below.

Atelier (franchise)

Whether it’s Atelier Ryza 3, Atelier Remake, or some (though not all) of the older titles, the Atelier franchise is full of games that aren’t Deck-compatible but would run great on an AYANEO Slide.

Marie Rose was one of the characters included in the roster when Azur Lane had a crossover event with DOA Xtreme Venus Vacation in late 2020. Yostar later held a re-run of the collaboration in the iOS and Android mobile game between April 2023 and May 2023.

While the re-run event had the new additions of Tamaki and Luna as the main highlights, it also brought in "Steamy Venus" as a new optional purchasable skin for Marie Rose. This skin depicts the character in a hot spring with fully integrated Live2D animations and interactions when the player sets her as one of the home screen Secretaries.

Koei Tecmo's announcement tweet, which includes the image of the skin in question, is available right below via the official KT model+ social media account:

4 Best Palworld Glitches We’ve Found So Far

2 months 4 weeks ago

Screenshot of Tower boss in Palworld.

Palworld is in its Early Access phase, meaning players are more likely to experience bugs compared to fully released games. Here are the four best Palworld glitches that we've found so far, including some that can actually benefit your own gameplay.

No More Spoiled Food

https://youtu.be/ZzWtMOs9Aok?si=ZXzvIn2gY7lxAKkg

Keeping your Pals happy and healthy in Palworld is a challenge, especially when food expires because its timer runs out. As shown by YouTuber Tuckie, there's a way to stop this by resetting the food timer infinitely. Simply put your food into any kind of chest or food storage container like the Feed Box or Cooler, and click on "Sort." This is really useful for keeping multiple Cakes on hand for breeding without them going to waste.

Who Are the Best Yakuza and Like a Dragon Characters?

2 months 4 weeks ago

Best Yakuza and Like a Dragon Character

The Like a Dragon (or as it was formerly known, Yakuza) series is roughly two decades old, spanning a total of nine mainline entries and several spin-offs. As the series has gained popularity internationally, players worldwide have had a chance to experience some of the most interesting characters the games have to offer. Below, we've provided a list of who we feel is the best character in the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series!

Oh, it absolutely has to be Goro Majima. He's just such a hilarious figure, and it's amazing the range he has. The Mad Dog can be incredibly serious at times, but then we also have him popping out of garbage cans to ambush Kiryu-chan. I also will never forget his Yakuza: Dead Souls "Get to the Top" performance. — Jenni

The most obvious choice here is Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima. After all, there wouldn't be a Yakuza series without these two. However, despite playing the Yakuza franchise for over a decade now, I am going to pick Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth. When Like a Dragon was first announced, I was extremely skeptical about the series taking on a new protagonist. Plus Ichiban just looked goofy in that run-down suit that looked like it had been a holdover from the 80s.
