Why These Modders Are Taking Cyberpunk 2077 Into Their Own Hands

2 years 11 months ago

Rick, a 37-year old from Canada, wanted to fix Cyberpunk 2077's enemy netrunners (the ones who like to hack you in battle). He downloaded a decompiler that let him sift through CD Projekt Red's in-house scripting language, and took aim at some of the bugs lingering in the source code. Rick found a lot more than he bargained for. Apparently, there were a slew of enemy quickhack abilities that, seemingly, never made it into the retail disc.

They had names like “HackDeath” and “HackweaponMalfunction”. Rick tested each one out by modifying the game code to use the hack with the name he specified and found some of them worked and some of them didn’t. “For some of them the hack part worked fine but the status effect they applied did nothing,” he said. "In the case of something like HackWeaponMalfunction, there were four or five different status effects present in the game with names that were variations of JamWeapon, WeaponJamTier2, etc. and I tried them all until I found one that worked." [ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/22/cyberpunk-2077-wall-running-returns-through-mod]

Clearly, there was a time when some of the stronger enemies in Cyberpunk were intended to carry a much larger toolbox, full of dastardly feints and cracks that could overheat your firearms or cripple your movement, designed specifically to screw up V's battleplan in every corridor. Rick can understand why CD Projekt Red made the cut. For plenty of gamers, he says, getting constantly hacked by a platoon of giggling androids might be pretty frustrating. But he still wanted to witness Cyberpunk in all of its pre-alpha glory. "I made the mod for other players like me who would like a more challenging experience," says Rick. You can download it right now, on NexusMods. It's called, "AI Netrunners Enhanced.

Housemarque Found Out About Returnal's $70 Price Tag At the Same Time As Everyone Else

2 years 11 months ago

For some gamers, it’s been an interesting challenge adapting to the $70 price point for some next-gen games, and that includes the Returnal developers at Housemarque.

According to Axios, Housemarque found out that Returnal would be priced at $70 at the same time as the general public.

Housemarque’s marketing director Mikael Haveri shared how internal demos of Returnal continually impressed Sony, who were funding the game. After each demo the studio showed Sony, Haveri says Housemarque "got a little bit more availability to scope it out more and to grow the game."

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/05/10/how-returnal-shows-the-ps5s-power-performance-review"]

These positive impressions led to the scope of Returnal expanding, and subsequently, it became one of the first games in decades to be sold for more than $60. Housemarque’s team learned about Sony’s decision to price most next-gen games $70 “around the same time as the general public” back in September 2020.

Housemarque’s earlier titles, like Resogun or Nex Machina, tended to sell in the ballpark of $20 given their arcade, smaller-scale nature compared to the 3D Returnal.

Despite this lower-priced history, Housemarque was already focused on making Returnal a bigger game than its previous titles after proclaiming in 2017 that "arcade is dead." This was after lackluster sales for Nex Machina, which pushed Housemarque to start venturing into console-scale development.

Trover Saves the Universe Comic Coming from Skybound

2 years 11 months ago
Rick and Morty isn't the only Justin Roiland project to make the jump to comics. Skybound will publish a new limited series based on Squanch Games' comedic action platformer Trover Saves the Universe. Skybound made the announcement during their latest Skybound Xpo digital event. Trover Saves the Universe is a five-issue series, with Tess Stone (Not Drunk Enough) writing and drawing the first issue. Check out a preview of issue #1 in the slideshow gallery below: [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=trover-saves-the-universe-comic-book-preview&captions=true"] Here's how Skybound describes the new series:
Welcome to the ICJ—Important Cosmic Jobs—where employees are ranked by their boss, and at the end of each month, the worst employee literally gets the ax. It’s…not a great gig. But when ICJ’s top eyehole monster winds up dead, the company’s most inept (and rival) employees, Klover and Bo, are falsely accused of his murder and hunted by the Space Cops! Now they must clear their names and unravel a conspiracy that reaches the very top…that is, if they don’t kill each other first!
“When Skybound mentioned they were interested in doing a Trover Saves the Universe comic with the help of Tess Stone, I knew it was going to be something of high quality," said Roiland in a statement. "Important cosmic jobs is such fertile soil for storytelling, and Tess has successfully expanded it beyond the game's DLC to create a whole new crazy adventure for Trover fans to follow.” "Working on this series has been such a wonderful opportunity in more ways than one. Not only do I get to play around in the wonderful setting of Justin Roiland and Squanch Games' Trover Saves the Universe, I was given the chance to build up and fall in love with characters of my own,” said Stone.

NEO: The World Ends With You Hints at the Return of Another Old Friend

2 years 11 months ago
We've already seen trailers for NEO: The World Ends With You confirming that certain characters from the original game are returning, with both numbers-obsessed Minamimoto and former reaper Kariya stepping back into the Reaper's Game for the sequel. But a new press release for the upcoming game seems to indicate that another character may be making a cameo, or at least is playing a role in the background of Shibuya in NEO. Spoiler Warning: The following contains spoilers for the end of the original The World Ends With You. Read on past the video at your own risk (don't worry, the video itself is safe). [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/05/14/neo-the-world-ends-with-you-opening-movie-trailer"] At the end of The World Ends With You, one of your companions, Shiki manages to escape the Reaper's Game along with Neku and the rest of his friends. Though we never learn her fate after the crew meets up, much of her arc in the game was focused around her friendship with her friend Eri, a talented designer. Shiki is an adept seamstress and is able to make the clothes Eri designs, and even made "Mr. Mew," a stuffed cat she carries around in Shibuya and who aids her in battle. We've seen Mr. Mew reappear already in the hands of Tsugumi, a young woman who's been teased multiple times for NEO: The World Ends With You, though it's never been explained why she has Mr. Mew. However, a slide presentation about NEO: The World Ends With You sent out to media today reveals that Tsugumi's Mr. Mew may hold answers to Shiki's ultimate fate. "The stuffed animal she carries resembles the mascot of Gatto Nero, a new brand that's all the rage in Shibuya -- but her plush pal apparently predates the establishment of said brand." There are two clues in this excerpt about Shiki: the first is in Gatto Nero, the brand Mr. Mew is a mascot for.

Move Over Lady Dimitrescu, the Resident Evil Community Loves the Duke Now

2 years 11 months ago
Lady Dimitrescu has held an unassailable position as the Resident Evil community's favourite new character since months before the game arrived. But with Resident Evil Village now in players' hands, a new fan-favourite character could be on the way to take her crown – The Duke. Resident Evil Village's unusually friendly merchant was shown a little in trailers for the game, but becomes more or less Ethan Winters' only friend throughout the game – and that's led to a huge surge in fan appreciation for him. To go some way towards showing that love, check out a Reddit post from Naillian603, titled, "I didn't think The Duke would live up to the RE4 merchant but he proved me long. I'd go as far to say I love The Duke".

Disco Elysium's Australian Ban Has Been Overturned

2 years 11 months ago
Update 05/14/2021: The Australian Classification Review Board has reversed the ban on Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, after developer ZA/UM formally challenged the decision. It seems the tipping point for the game's ban stemmed from Dico Elysium's depiction of drug use, and the temporary benefits it offers you character. However, as reported by Kotaku Australia, the Review Board (which is separate to the Classification Board that originally refused to classify the game) has specifically made clear that Disco Elysium's depiction of drug use is shown in an ultimately negative light, such that it can now receive an R 18+ classification. "In the Review Board’s opinion," reads the Review Board's report, "while drug use linked to incentives and rewards cannot be accommodated at R 18+, this game does provide disincentives related to drug-taking behaviour, to the point where regular drug use leads to negative consequences for the player’s progression in the game. It was, specifically, the disincentives for drug use that influenced the Review Board in making their decision. Drug use is not explicitly depicted within the game." The classification means that Disco Elysium: The Final Cut can now be sold in Australia without impediment, although the R 18+ rating means that only adults can puchase the game.

PSA: Mass Effect Legendary Edition Won't Be On Game Pass

2 years 11 months ago

If you hoped EA and Xbox’s recent partnership on Game Pass meant you might be able to play Mass Effect Legendary Edition on the subscription service, we have some bad news. An EA community manager has confirmed that the only subscription service it's available on is EA Play Pro.

If you’re a Game Pass Ultimate subscriber, you’ve instead automatically got a basic EA Play membership, which gets you a 10% discount on games in addition to access to the EA Play game library. You can of course still purchase Mass Effect Legendary Edition on the usual digital or retail storefronts.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/05/13/mass-effect-legendary-edition-the-10-biggest-changes"]

Keep in mind that EA Play Pro is also a PC-exclusive membership, so if you’ve only got consoles around the house, you’re similarly out of luck. EA Play Pro is available for $15 a month, which gets you access to all the latest EA PC games at launch.

Still, it’s possible that Mass Effect Legendary Edition may come to Game Pass in the future. FIFA 21 similarly debuted on EA Play Pro, but landed on Game Pass a mere six months later. That’ll depend entirely on EA’s plans for the remastered trilogy, though.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/05/13/mass-effect-legendary-edition-the-first-21-minutes-of-gameplay-4k-60fps"]

“[Mass Effect Legendary Edition coming to Game Pass is] certainly a possibility, though I'm not aware of any current plans or a timeframe for anything beyond EA Play Pro access at this point,” EA said.

Returnal's Systems Are Hindering Auto-Save, Housemarque Says

2 years 11 months ago
Auto-save has been a hot topic of conversation among Returnal players since its release last month. Housemarque's roguelite is excellent, but it's also very hard, and runs can last for more than two hours. That's a long time to anchor yourself to your PS5. Housemarque says it's heard the feedback from fans, but that implementing a save feature is easier said than done. "We understand that there are some systems in place that are currently a hindering factor," Housemarque marketing director Mikael Havari told Axios today. Havari's comments dampen hopes of a solution that would enable players to quit without fear of losing their progress. While other roguelites like Hades includes a quicksave solution that retains the tension of permadeath, it's clearly not so easy to implement such a feature in Returnal. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/29/returnal-review"] Other developers have sounded off on this subject. "I often see players exclaim how easy it is to add something, especially if other games have it," Spelunky designer Derek Yu told Vice Games last week, "but every team and game has different priorities and nothing is really as trivial as it seems from the outside." As one of the first so-called "AAA roguelites," Returnal stands out for its beautiful visuals, arcade mechanics, and storytelling features. While its progression revolves around discrete "chambers," they tend to flow more smoothly than in other roguelites, where you pass through a door to enter the next room. This is in part because Roguelite is meant to highlight the lack of load times on the PS5. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/how-returnal-shows-the-ps5s-power-performance-review"] Still, difficult as it is, Havari says Housemarque is looking for a solution.

Dave Bautista Says He Turned Down Fast and Furious to Pitch a Gears of War Movie

2 years 11 months ago

It’s no secret that actor Dave Bautista really, really wants to play Marcus Fenix in a Gears of War movie, but it may not be entirely clear just how bad he wants it. In an interview with Collider, Bautista says that he turned down an offer from Universal to play a role in a Fast & The Furious movie in order to promote a Gears of War adaptation.

"I don’t make any pretense about it,” Bautista said. “I had a chance to get a meeting at WB, they were talking to me about this and that and I said 'hey, let’s talk about Bane.' That happened to me one other time in my career. They wanted to talk to me about Fast and the Furious, and I said 'I’m not interested, let’s talk about [Gears of War character] Marcus Fenix.’”

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/09/08/dave-bautista-responds-to-ign-comments"]

Bautista later added that he thinks Universal was “a little put off,” but that he didn’t regret taking his shot.

“I don’t mean to offend anybody,” Bautista said. “I’m not putting down anything else, I’m just saying [Gears] is way more interesting to me. I don’t want to pretend like I’m actually interested in something I’m not when there’s something I’m actually really excited about that you guys have under control. ‘Would you consider me for that?’ I don’t think there’s any harm in that. I’m not trying to step on anybody else’s toes, I’m just saying like this is what I love and I’m seriously passionate about this. ‘I can do a good job for you guys on this.’”

Where's IGN's Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Review?

2 years 11 months ago
Late on Monday afternoon, a Mass Effect: Legendary Edition code arrived in my email inbox. As of this writing, that's about 65 hours ago – which would be roughly enough time to hurriedly play through two of its three large-scale RPGs if you did literally nothing else. I decided not to do that, because by now my only opinion on their quality would be that they are not as good as sleeping, eating, or seeing my family once in a while. Put another way, I haven't had enough time with them yet to write anything close to a review. My early impressions based on the first 10 or so hours haven't revealed much about the updated original Mass Effect that you haven't seen or heard previously: it looks much better than it did 14 years ago and the writing and voice performances are still wonderful but the human facial animations (and running) don't compare to modern motion capture tech; combat holds up pretty well even though it's not as smooth as the latter games (switching weapon mods on the fly is still a pain); the Mako is still bouncy but not ridiculously bouncy. I've had a few minor bugs but nothing too disruptive yet. Here's 21 minutes of footage to give you an idea: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/mass-effect-legendary-edition-the-first-21-minutes-of-gameplay-4k-60fps"] Off the cuff, I can say that revisiting the story after 14 years has been great – I'd forgotten how quickly things get going, the original crew is introduced, and we're off on a hunt for the secrets of the Protheans and the Reapers. But there's still a long journey ahead and it's not meant to be played in one long forced march, so it's going to take a while before I can get my head around all of it for a review.

Koei Tecmo Would Love to Make Mario and Star Wars Musou Games

2 years 11 months ago
Koei Tecmo has found a good deal of success of late with its licensed Dynasty Warriors spinoffs, ranging from Dragon Quest to The Legend of Zelda. More are undoubtedly coming, but what next? Koei Tecmo's president has a couple ideas. Speaking with TheGamer, Koei Tecmo President Hisashi Koinuma talked about the games he would personally love to see as a subject for a Warriors (also known as "musou") game. "Mario and Star Wars are two great series that come to mind. Unfortunately, we haven't had the opportunity to collaborate with these IP yet." Koinuma didn't elaborate on why he picked those franchises in particular, but with a little imagination, it's not hard to envision a Mario Warriors or Star Wars Jedi Warriors. Both franchise feature all the ingredients of a great musou game: distinctive settings, huge casts, and interesting settings. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/18/hyrule-warriors-age-of-calamity-review"] Koei Tecmo's most recent foray was Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which we called a welcome trip back to the world of Breath of Wild. While it missed some characterization opportunity, it was still a blast from start to finish, our review said. Koei Tecmo has developed a strong relationship with Nintendo in general. Aside from Warriors versions of Fire Emblem and Zelda, it played a large part in the development of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. As for Star Wars, the opportunity exists now that Disney is looking to partner with other developers outside of EA.

Total War: Warhammer 3 - The First Hands-On Preview

2 years 11 months ago
I've had some pretty wild ideas in my day, but probably none as ill-advised as Tsarina Katarin of Kislev deciding to invade the chaotic, unearlthly realm of the Blood God, Khorne. If you want to survive the daemonic invasion in Total War: Warhammer 3's campaign, though, you don't have much choice. Taking the fight to the Ruinous Powers won't be a simple matter of routing a few armies from the field and laying siege to a fortress, though. It will play out as a new type of Survival Battle that combines elements of tower defense and resource management in ways we've never seen in Total War before. The Slavic-inspired realm of Kislev has generally been the first to bear the brunt of Chaos throughout Warhammer's history, and their playstyle definitely reflects this. They're built around a core of rugged hybrid infantry – that is, fighty guys who can also shoot, and shooty guys who can also fight. Kossar archers can hold their own against a melee charge much better than the missile troops of the neighboring Empire. The burly Streltsy come to battle with big ass axes that make them great shock troops, but if you look closely, are also guns for softening up the enemy at range first. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=total-war-warhammer-3-may-2021-screenshots&captions=true"] Their unique ability fits them perfectly, as well. By Our Blood makes all of your core units fight harder once they've lost at least half of their numbers, in contrast to most other mortal factions. This allows you, as Creative Assembly put it, to ask for greater sacrifices out of your soldiers than you would normally. It's a great feeling to have your back against the wall in a desperate defense and see your bloodied units somehow still hold the line, against all odds. Kislev also has a really strong cavalry component. Winged Lancers are swift shock cav who might not be as tough as Bretonnian knights, but can inflict similar damage on the charge.

Monster Hunter World Passes 17 Million Sales

2 years 11 months ago
Monster Hunter World continues its reign as Capcom's biggest ever game, having passed 17 million sales worldwide. As part of its highlights from the latest financial year, Capcom has revealed that Monster Hunter has passed 17 million sales across all formats, while sequel Monster Hunter Rise approaches 5 million itself, on Nintendo Switch alone. Since launching in January 2018, Monster Hunter World has continued to be a success for Capcom, no doubt in part to regular sales on both digital and physical storefronts, and the release of large expansion Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Iceborne brought a new area for players to explore, alongside more massive monsters for them to hunt. And the strategy seems to have worked, with the game reaching 17.1 million units sold by the end of the latest fiscal year. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/01/25/monster-hunter-world-review"] Monster Hunter World was a breath of fresh air for the franchise.

Black and Red PS5 DualSense Controller Editions Revealed

2 years 11 months ago
Sony has revealed new Midnight Black and Cosmic Red editions of the PS5 DualSense Controller, and they'll be released in June. Announced on the PlayStation blog, the new controllers continue the two-tone approach of the original white DualSense, with Cosmic red adopting a red and black look, and Midnight Black offering a subtler black and grey approach. Both controllers will go on sale next month, but release dates will vary by region. In the US, you can pre-order on Amazon or with PS Direct in time for a June 11 release, with Midnight Black coming in at the standard $69.99/ £59.99, but Cosmic Red costing a little more at $74.99/ £64.99. It's not clear what causes that difference in price. In the UK, they will arrive on June 18, and can be preordered at Amazon. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/05/13/playstation-5-dualsense-cosmic-red-and-midnight-black-reveal-trailer"] While Sony has yet to announce a new-look PlayStation 5 console, designer Leo Cardoso says the new controllers have been designed to complement the existing white-and-black machine. "We designed the colors around the theme of ‘galaxy’ as it felt like a natural progression from the original PS5 and accessories designs," he explained. Fellow designer Satoshi Aoyagi adds that both new controller editions,"feature a subtle blue hue, that produces unique shades of red and black.

Nintendo Physically Can't Make Enough Switch Consoles Right Now

2 years 11 months ago
Nintendo is currently unable to make enough Switch consoles to meet demand, and is becoming 'more uncertain' about its production plans for the coming year amid a global semiconductor shortage. In a Q&A with investors, company president Shuntaro Furukawa explained, "Demand for hardware continues to exceed our expectations even after the beginning of this calendar year, and production has currently not caught up to this high demand due to the tight supply and demand situation for semiconductor materials worldwide." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/how-nintendo-is-winning-next-gen-with-a-last-gen-console"] Semiconductors are used in almost all computing devices, and have seen shortages since last year. Among other things, they're used in the chips that power all of the major consoles. Furukawa was asked about the company's goal to ship 25.5 million Switches in the new financial year amid that situation, and it sounds like a somewhat hopeful number. "Although we are currently striving to produce as many units as possible, the fact is that our production plans are more uncertain than they were at the beginning of previous fiscal years. Our full-year sales plan is based on the premise that we can secure the materials necessary for production, but if we are able to produce more units, we will work hard to meet the strong demand, and to be able to ship and sell those units." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/will-switch-pros-new-chip-keep-up-with-ps5-xbox-series-x-next-gen-console-watch"] Nintendo is far from the only console maker running into semiconductor-related production issues.

Sega Considering Reboots for Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and More

2 years 11 months ago
A financial results presentation has revealed that Sega is considering reboots of Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio and other dormant IP, while it begins work on a 'super game'. A results presentation to mark the end of the fiscal year was published to the SegaSammy investor relations website today. The slideshow includes a number of interesting details about the company's future plans. One slide concerns the "utilization of IP [intellectual property] assets," noting which IPs are active and dormant, and how Sega plans to remaster, remake or reboot its older series to capitalize on the "globally recognized" IPs it has in its vault. A number of old, fan favourite franchises are mentioned in the past IP groups section, including Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, NiGHTS, Space Channel 5, Panzer Dragoon and Rez. At the very least, this suggests that the company is interested in bringing some of these games back to market while strengthening its active IPs such as Yakuza, Persona and Sonic. 'Nothing Stopping' Insomniac Making Sunset Overdrive 2 for PlayStation

Insomniac creative director Marcus Smith says there's "nothing really stopping" the studio from making a sequel to the Xbox-exclusive Sunset Overdrive for PlayStation – and that he'd love to return to the series. Speaking to GQ, Smith was asked if it was possible to make a new Sunset Overdrive now that the studio was owned by Sony. "I mean, never say never is my approach," he replied. "Obviously, we’re part of Sony now, but we own the IP and so there’s nothing really stopping us other than we have a lot of really exciting things in our future." That idea is backed up by the fact that Sony itself recently registered a trademark for Sunset Overdrive. While by no means a confirmation that the company will make a sequel, it does mean that it could. Smith – who directed Sunset Overdrive, and is directing Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart – also made clear that he'd like to try his hand at a sequel: "I think there are a lot of stories that can be told in that universe and I would love to return to it.

inXile Entertainment Hints at 'FPS RPG' for Xbox

2 years 11 months ago
It appears that inXile Entertainment is indeed working on an FPS RPG. The studio behind Wasteland 3 and Torment: Tides of Numenera dropped a hint to that effect in a response to an Xbox tweet asking, "What kind of game should I play next?" It then flashed a large number of genres, including "All of Them" and "Goose." "Pulled NEW + FPS + RPG," inXile Entertainment wrote in response, seemingly confirming reports from earlier this year it was making an FPS RPG. Assuming this is the case, it means that inXile Entertainment will be following in the footsteps of Obsidian, which put out The Outer Worlds in 2019 and is currently working on Avowed. inXile Entertainment's most recent stab at making a first-person RPG was in 2018, when it put out The Bard's Tale 4. IGN reviewer Leana Hafer called The Bard's Tale IV a "rousing adventure" in her review, but also said that it "shows its retro roots in some not so positive ways. " [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/09/26/the-bards-tale-4-barrows-deep-review"] The Bard's Tale's 4 release came two short months before the studio's acquisition by Microsoft alongside Obsidian.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends Review

2 years 11 months ago

As game premises go, it’s really hard to beat Hood: Outlaws & Legends. A Robin Hood fantasy heist game where you and a crew of outlaws steal from the heavily guarded fortresses of the rich and give it to the poor? Sign me and all my friends the heck up! But where this breathtaking world of assassins and knights delivers some awesome moments, sadly, it seems designed to reward bullheaded brute-force attacks over cunning stealth and doesn’t have nearly enough content to sustain the interest of the greedy swindlers it aims to please.

The main idea is that you and three fellow burglars work to steal loot from the grossly incompetent powers-that-be in a three-stage process: first you steal a key to a vault, then break into said vault, and finally make off with the goods. Given that the AI-controlled defenders are a bunch of dunces, it should be easy… except that a rival gang of four occupies the same map and will do everything in their power to throw wrenches in your plans so that they can nab the loot first. So Hood is all about stealth and cooperation... and when that inevitably fails, frantically murdering NPCs and rival players alike until one team makes off with the treasure. Each of the four characters on a team has a distinct role and set of abilities that can prove invaluable under the right circumstances (though you can use any team composition you like). Robin the Ranger, for example, is an archer class who can silently kill enemies from afar and open up new paths on the map via rope arrows that others can climb. On the opposite end of the spectrum is John the Brawler, a melee tank who can use his beefy lumberjack arms to open gates for his allies and is able to carry the treasure chest faster than any other class.

Destiny 2 Cross-Play Accidentally Enabled Months Ahead of Schedule

2 years 11 months ago

Destiny 2 fans have been eagerly awaiting for cross-play support, and it’s arrived months ahead of schedule... sort of.

Video Games Chronicle reports the arrival of cross-play support is actually a technical fluke. Bungie’s lead community manager Cozmo tweeted Wednesday telling players to partake until they disable the feature later this week.

“We are seeing reports that some players are able to get a sneak peek at Cross-play,” Cozmo said. “This isn't meant to be live yet and is not representative of the full experience. We will be implementing a fix to remove public access later this week, but in the meantime feel free to partake.”

Destiny 2’s Season of the Splicer kicked off this week as well, and data miners quickly discovered evidence of a potential cross-play beta in Destiny 2’s future, pointing at a new emblem awarded for competing cross-play Vanguard strikes, reports Eurogamer. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/05/12/destiny-2-season-of-the-splicer-season-pass-trailer"]

Destiny 2 assistant game director Joe Blackburn said back in February that Bungie is aiming to roll out cross-play sometime this fall.

Ubisoft Says It Will Focus Less on AAA Games: What Does That Mean?

2 years 11 months ago

Ubisoft just had its full year earnings call for the last fiscal year. Part of the goal of these calls is to tell the people who have invested large amounts of money in the company what said company plans to do in the coming year to make them even more money. In Ubisoft's case, that means explaining what kinds of big, money-making games they might want to release in the future.

But this year, news of Ubisoft's vague plans appears to have attracted a surprising amount of attention, making a few investors on the call a bit nervous and fans even more concerned:

"In line with the evolution of our high-quality line-up that is increasingly diverse, we are moving on from our prior comment regarding releasing three to four premium AAAs per year," said Frederick Duguet, Ubisoft's CFO, on the earnings call yesterday. "...Additionally, we are building our high-end free-to-play games to be trending toward AAA ambitions over the long-term."

This comment has many people upset, worried that Ubisoft is abandoning its tradition of massive console and PC releases like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Watch Dogs in favor of the free-to-play, mobile model that makes piles of money but leaves a sour taste in the mouths of the more mainstream gaming populace.

But the actual meaning behind Duguet's statements yesterday is more complex, mostly less scary, and frankly a little bit boring. It's less a sea change in Ubisoft's portfolio strategy, and more the continuation of what Ubisoft's already been doing for years — a strategy that most major gaming companies are embracing too, whether we like it or not.

What did Ubisoft actually say, and what's a AAA?

Let's start by taking a look at what Duguet actually said on the call, in full. Here's that first quote again, but with more context surrounding it.
