Sea Of Thieves' Crews Of Rage Update Adds A Furious Ship-Burning Chest And Viva Pinata Cosmetics

4 years 2 months ago

Sea of Thieves' latest update, Crews of Rage, sends players off on a quest to collect some particularly dangerous treasure. Go and visit Duke and he'll send you off on new bounties that will involve tracking down the Chest of Rage, which contains the souls of trapped pirates that are desperate for release.

As seen in the video below, the Chest of Rage needs to be kept cool, as the anger it contains threatens to burst forth. If you don't occasionally wet it with a dip in the ocean or a bucket of water, it'll flare fire in all directions--which can be absolutely hazardous if you're on your boat.

Alternatively, you can purposefully make the chest angry by shooting it and use those flames to your advantage, attacking enemy skeletons.

Here's When Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 2 Downtime Begins

4 years 2 months ago

Epic is preparing to launch Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2 (C2S2) on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. As always this will mean a period of downtime as the company prepares the big update, and according to the studio its proceeding patches will be bigger than usual. Server downtime will begin on February 20 at 4 AM ET / 1 AM PT.

Epic announced the downtime via the Fortnite Status Twitter account. In a follow-up, the account also noted that patch sizes will be larger than normal with the start of the new season.

Very little is known about the new season, other than some teasers that have accompanied an ARG with globe-trotting clues. Those all seem to indicate spycraft is the theme for this next season, although some teasers we've seen have referenced cats, bombs attached to rats, and other odd shenanigans. Just what it all means will be made clear tomorrow, when the new season launches at 9 AM ET / 6 AM PT.

Wolcen Update Nerfs Massively Overpowered Bane Of Tyranny

4 years 2 months ago

After leaving Early Access and getting marred by some technical issues, Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem will receive a brand-new patch that makes some significant nerfs to a few of the game's abilities.

One particular nerf hits the minor passive ability Bane of Tyranny. The ability is part of the Siege Breaker branch of passive skills, and when unlocked it granted a ridiculous damage multiplier of +50. But developer Wolcen Studio has scaled that back, bringing Bane of Tyranny to a more modest 0.5 multiplier instead.

The Secure Parry minor passive ability was nerfed as well, going from 10% health regeneration per Inexorable point down to 0.1%. Additionally, Wolcen Studio increased the Acute Tracking node to hold a maximum of 10 Cold Blooded points instead of the five maximum previously.

GTA 4 Is Back On Steam, But Has Lost A Big Feature

4 years 2 months ago

When Grand Theft Auto 4 first came out in 2008, its multiplayer was a game-changer, allowing players to hang out together in the game's immaculate Liberty City together for the first time in franchise history. Well, if you were hoping to relive those glory days on the PC, we've got some bad news: the multiplayer portion of the game has been permanently disabled due to lingering issues with the now-defunct Games for Windows Live platform.

While this is a massive loss, considering how important those multiplayer modes were to the game's success, it's still an improvement on the current situation. Since January, GTA 4 has been unavailable for purchase on Steam due to the fact that Rockstar has run out of keys for the Games for Windows Live. Since the service is now dead, Microsoft has declined to provide any more, which has led to this situation. The single-player portion of the game will be playable starting March 19.

If you're unlucky enough to have bought a physical edition of GTA 4, you'll have to either use your physical key to update to the new Complete Edition, or connect your Rockstar Social Club account in place of Games for Windows Live. It's a throwback to the days of "CD keys," but, hey, that's what happens when you want to play a retro game like GTA 4. Feel old yet?

Sony Cancels PAX East Showcase Over Coronavirus Concerns, Cuts Last Of Us 2 Demos

4 years 2 months ago

Sony won't be attending E3 this year, and now it has confirmed that it will not make a scheduled appearance at this month's PAX East event. On the PlayStation Blog, the company cited the coronavirus epidemic as the cause for the sudden cancellation.

SIE content communications manager Justin Massongill said that avoiding the event was the "safest option" in the face of the erratic nature of the coronavirus (officially called COVID-19). The virus has affected more than 75,000 people and the death toll has risen above a reported 2,000 cases.

"Update: Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment made the decision to cancel its participation at PAX East in Boston this year due to increasing concerns related to COVID-19 (also known as 'novel coronavirus')," Massongill said. "We felt this was the safest option as the situation is changing daily. We are disappointed to cancel our participation in this event, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our highest concern."

Kung-Fu Animals RPG Biomutant In "Final Stages Of Development"

4 years 2 months ago

If you dream of crane kicking anthropomorphic squirrels in the face, your wait is almost over: The open-world RPG Biomutant has entered the last stages of development, according to a tweet from developer Experiment 101.

Published by THQ Nordic, and first announced in late 2017, the martial arts RPG made a splash at industry trade shows like Gamescom with flashy trailers that show off its unique world and cartoonish combat. Still, as the tweet says, there is no release date to announce as of yet. The game's Steam store page references a planned release window of 2020.

If you're looking for more games starring bipedal mice, check out Ghost of a Tale, a stealthy adventure RPG. If eking out an existence in a mutated world is more your thing, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is an excellent tactical shooter with plenty of depth. In our review, David Wildgoose called it "a superb tactical combat campaign that you shouldn't let sneak past."

NES Zappers Selling For High Prices In Japan

4 years 2 months ago

If you're a gamer above a certain age, you're probably well-familiar with the NES Zapper, the electric orange light gun that served as one of the most popular accessories for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. While you could use it to blow away bad guys in a variety of games, like Hogan's Alley and Wild Gunman, it's often associated with Duck Hunt, the bird-shooting game that starred one of video game's most annoying canine companions.

Well, Japanese gamers looking to blast some ducks these days will need to fork up some serious cash for the privilege. According to a tweet by Kotaku features editor Chris Kohler, the humble Zapper has climbed in price in Japanese markets in recent months. For comparison, the cheapest orange Zapper in the image had a price of 6,000 yen (~$54), whereas Amazon postings for a US Zapper start around $15, including shipping. This can be attributed to two main factors: the Zapper never came out in Japan, since the Famicom had its own light gun that bore a strong resemblance to a real-life revolver; and the gun's appearance as a weapon in Splatoon 2 has raised its profile significantly.

Also coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC this holiday, Dangerous Driving 2 features racing events as well as a free driving mode that lets you cause massive wrecks in classic Burnout fashion. The first Dangerous Driving was a spiritual successor to games like Burnout 3, while Dangerous Driving 2's open-world should allow for experimentation like in Burnout Paradise.

The PS4 Pro is currently $300, down from its original price of $400, and it comes with free Prime two-day shipping.

Of course, developers can take advantage of the extra power in different ways, so the results vary between games. The PS4 Pro is also capable of streaming 4K video from services like Netflix and YouTube.

Wolcen: Lords Of Mayhem 1.0.4.0 Patch Notes, Studio Explains New Policy On Hotfixes

4 years 2 months ago

The indie Diablo-like Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem had a big launch on Steam, but quickly hit server issues and other launch hiccups. The studio has now delivered a promised hotfix, which addresses some of those problems along with several other bugs.

In an update posted to Steam, Wolcen Studio thanks the audience for its patience with the admittedly rocky launch, including a data loss issue that occurred last week. It says it is halting its previous approach to hotfixes to prevent another data loss issue, and instead it will slow the pace of fixes and coordinate with partners more carefully. As a result, in the future it will cap server capacities and only push out one patch per week.

This week's patch, version 1.0.4.0, fixes an issue that would prevent offline characters from being saved, along with several other bugs. It states that it fixes an issue regarding network load and unretrieved data, but it's clear Wolcen Studio still feels it has a lot of work to do. In a future patch, it plans to make more bug fixes, including issues with the Act 1 and Act 3 bosses, a Korean language option, and PTBR localization selection.

Pokemon Go Legendary, Tornadus, Leaves Raid Battles Very Soon

4 years 2 months ago

Pokemon Go's latest Legendary, Tornadus, won't be around for much longer. The Cyclone Pokemon is scheduled to leave Raid Battles on Tuesday, February 25 at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET, making this your last chance to catch one in the game.

Until then, Tornadus will appear in Gyms as a five-star Raid Boss. Before you can catch it, you'll need to team up with other players in-person and defeat the Legendary in a battle. Tornadus is a pure Flying type, making it vulnerable to Rock, Electric, and Ice Pokemon like Rhyperior, Zapdos, and Glaceon.

If you don't yet have a Rhyperior, you'll have a chance to get one during this month's Community Day, which takes place this Saturday, February 22. The featured Pokemon this time is Rhyhorn, so there will be plenty of opportunities to catch some during the event. If you can evolve Rhyhorn all the way into Rhyperior up to two hours after the Community Day ends, it'll learn the Rock-type attack Rock Wrecker, which should prove to be very helpful against Tornadus.

Doom Eternal And Animal Crossing Fans Have Become Supportive Friends

Despite one of the biggest games of the month--Final Fantasy 7 Remake--getting pushed to early April, March is still packed to the gills with releases. And two of those upcoming games are seeing some unexpected and wholesome cross-pollination: Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal.

Both titles launch on March 20--Animal Crossing: New Horizons lands on Nintendo Switch, while Doom Eternal comes to basically everything else (Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, as well as Switch sometime this year). And both subreddit communities are cheering each other on.

Over in the Doom subreddit, fans are posting a variety of artwork featuring the Doomguy and Isabelle, Animal Crossing's adorable little Shih Tzu. The crossover art is rendered in a bunch of different styles, from traditional Animal Crossing fare to memes and everything in between.

New PS4 'Essential Picks' Sale Live Now With Deals On The Best Games

4 years 2 months ago

The PlayStation Store has been handing out deals left and right in a series of great PS4 sales this month, and that streak continues with the latest sale kicking off on PSN today. The Essential Picks PS4 sale is live now with up to 70 percent off some of the system's best games, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition and last year's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, so this is a great opportunity to snag some games on your personal wishlist. The Essential Picks sale is live now until March 3 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET.

It's been nearly five years since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first released, but there's no question it's one of the most acclaimed and influential games of this console generation, and with the popularity of the new Netflix Witcher TV show, its audience continues to grow. The Complete Edition is on sale for just $15 and includes all DLC and expansion packs as well as the base game.

You'll also find Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which just released in November, on sale for $45. That's a great deal on the action-adventure game, which follows the adventures of a young Jedi named Cal Kestis. Quite a few older PS4 hits are discounted as well, including Bloodborne - Complete Edition bundle for $17.49, The Last of Us Remastered for $15, and Until Dawn for $15. We've seen these games on sale for cheaper--PlayStation discounted its Greatest Hits collection to $10 each for Black Friday--but any one of these games is still worth picking up for a few bucks more if you've never played them.

Fortnite Emotes Are Now Safe To Stream Again

4 years 2 months ago

If you enjoy streaming Fortnite you're likely annoyed by its emotes. It's not that they're bad, but rather that many of them feature music that could get you into trouble on Twitch, YouTube, and Mixer. But with the latest update to the Battle Royale game, that won't be an issue anymore.

Fortnite is getting a handy options toggle on PC, allowing you to use emotes without playing any licensed audio that may be attached to it. That means no accidental mutes or content strikes on your streams and videos. Just the same silly dance moves, without some of the audible fanfare behind them.

That will definitely come in handy if you're a fan of Rick Astley, who Epic Games struck a deal with recently to have his now infamous dance join the growing collection of emotes.

Bayonetta Dev Platinum Games Teases Major Announcement For Next Week

4 years 2 months ago

Platinum Games, developer of Bayonetta, Astral Chain, NieR: Automata, and other action titles, is set to make a major announcement in the February 27 issue of Famitsu. That's according to this week's edition of the magazine, as translated and reported by Gematsu.

Earlier this month, Platinum Games launched a mysterious teaser website called Platinum 4. This led to the studio kicking off an official Kickstarter campaign for a port of the former Wii U-exclusive The Wonderful 101. The campaign was immediately successful, meeting crowdfunding goals that ensure the remaster is set to release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam. The website now displays The Wonderful 101 as the first of the Platinum 4, with next week's announcement presumably being the second.

Bayonetta 3 and Babylon's Fall are both already in development at Platinum, so if the mysterious Platinum 4 only concerns unannounced games they're unlikely to be included. The secrecy would indicate that, but you also never know. Last year, the studio revealed plans to self-publish two brand-new IPs, with recent investment from Chinese tech giant Tencent possibly contributing to this.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 "Fantastic Four" DLC Coming Next Month

4 years 2 months ago

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 will add another chunk of story content and five more playable characters in March. The Fantastic Four: Shadow of Doom pack will feature the iconic superhero family fighting against their nemesis, Doctor Doom. It's coming on March 26.

This will be the last of the downloadable content included in the game's expansion pass. The first two, Curse of the Vampire and Rise of the Phoenix, featured characters from Marvel Knights and the X-Men, respectively. This one will presumably add the Fantastic Four--Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards), the Invisible Woman (Sue Storm), the Human Torch (Johnny Storm), and the Thing (Ben Grimm). The character select screen shows five new slots incoming, though, which could mean you can recruit Doom to your Ultimate Alliance ranks too.

February's Free SNES And NES Games For Switch Online Members Now Live

February's free NES and SNES games for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers are now live. Four more retro titles have been added to the online service--two from each classic system.

The new NES games this month are Shadow of the Ninja and Eliminator Boat Duel. The former is a cooperative side-scrolling action game in the vein of Ninja Gaiden, while the latter is a top-down racing game that has players piloting high-speed powerboats.

The two new SNES titles, meanwhile, are the cute-but-frenetic top-down shooter Pop'n TwinBee and the sports game Smash Tennis. What makes these titles particularly notable is that neither has previously received a US release. You can take a look at the four new Switch Online games below.

Disney's New Mulan Gets A Rating No Other Recent Reboot Did

4 years 2 months ago

The new Mulan movie from Disney will be the first of the company's live-action reboots to receive a PG-13 rating in the United States. The official rating from the Motion Picture Association of America states that film will be rated PG-13 for its "sequences of violence," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

All of Disney's previous live-action remakes, including Aladdin, The Lion King, Dumbo, and others, received PG or G ratings. Mulan also becomes the first Disney movie overall to receive a PG-13 rating since Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). As the most recent trailer displayed, the new Mulan will indeed have a lot of action and presumably violence as the movie is about war, after all.

Temtem's Latest Patch Introduces A New Zone Inspired By A Pokemon Red/Blue Feature

4 years 2 months ago

Temtem, the early-access PC Pokemon-style MMO, has recently received a major update that expands the endgame. Update 0.5.12 introduces a new arena, the Saipark, which operates a lot like the iconic Safari Zone in the original Pokemon games, Red and Blue. The Safari Zone let you wander around and capture Pokemon without battling them, many of which could only be found within the zone's boundaries. Temtem now has a similarly special place that is a bit different from the rest of the game.

The Saipark, which is available to endgame players, is a natural reserve that will house two different species of Temtem each week. These creatures will have special features--they have a higher chance of being Luma, or might have egg moves or guaranteed minimum SVs.

Players will need to buy special Temcards for the park, called Saicards. These will expire by the end of the week, and only work within the park. There's a fee involved in entering the park, and each time they buy cards over the week the price will go up. It's a good way for players who have put a lot of time into Temtem to capture some interesting critters.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Next Tournament Focuses On Characters From The 90s

4 years 2 months ago

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will have a special 90s-themed tournament this weekend that will limit the range of fighters available to those who debuted in the 90s. The available stages will also be pulled from 90s games.

This will disqualify plenty of fighters and stages who were first introduced before or after the 90s, but you'll be able to use Sonic, Pikachu, Cloud, King K. Rool, Mewtwo, Sheik, Ridley, and many others. A full list has not been made available, but long-time Nintendo fans can look forward to representing their favorite games of the era.

Players will be able to unlock Spirits, depending on their performance in the tournament. It begins on February 21 (in Japan, at least--start time will vary depending on your timezone), and will run for three days.

Lack Of Shooters On Switch Could Benefit Warface, Dev Says

4 years 2 months ago

The free-to-play FPS Warface launched on Nintendo Switch earlier this week with little fanfare and no pre-announcements. It came as a total surprise, as the Switch is not known best as a platform for online shooters. Developer My.Games has now explained why it wanted to bring Warface to Switch.

Head of global publishing Alexey Izotov told GI.biz that the lack of many online shooters for Switch provides the opportunity for Warface to stand out.

"The lack of online shooters on Switch is a strong advantage for us," he said. "We know this market really well, so we saw an opportunity to bring our experience in the FPS genre to this growing platform. We are also one of the very few players on the market with continuously successful F2P games on consoles."

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX Shows Off Dungeon-Crawling Gameplay In New Trailer

4 years 2 months ago

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX has a new trailer, showing off some of the dungeon-crawling gameplay from the new Switch remake of the 2006 Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS title. The first announcement of the game gave us some idea of what to expect, but this new trailer gives us a better look at how it actually plays.

For those unfamiliar with the game, which has spawned four sequels (one exclusive to Japan), it casts you as a human who gets turned into a Pokemon and is made to team up with a partner to tackle dungeons. It's got grid-based dungeon-crawling gameplay that's quite different from what fans of the mainline Pokemon series are used to.

The new art style is looking good, too, in the footage below.

E3 2020 Is Still Guaranteed To Have At Least One Ridiculous Press Conference

E3 2020 is undergoing some changes this year, but one thing is staying the same. Devolver, the boutique games publisher behind quirky and irreverent titles like Genital Jousting and Hotline Miami, has confirmed that it will return to E3 this year, at least in its own way.

In addition to this, Devolver is known for its completely absurd "Big Fancy Press Conferences," which are pre-taped and have recently featured the actress Mahria Zook in a role where she pretends to be a video game executive and goes about mocking various industry trends and topics.

Prohibition Era Strategy Game Empire Of Sin Has Been Delayed

4 years 2 months ago

Empire of Sin, the strategy game for PC and consoles that was due in spring 2020, has been pushed back a bit. The game will now arrive later this year, in the fall, so that developer Romero Games can take more time to get the game right.

The announcement of the game's delay came through Twitter from Brenda Romero, the game's director. She thanked the game's followers for their support, and explained that they were choosing "quality over speed."

The game, which was announced during Nintendo's E3 2019 presentation, is set in 1920s Chicago. It charges players with building a crime family capable of taking down the other 14 families in the city.

The game promises tactical XCOM-style turn-based combat alongside other strategy elements, as you build up your reputation, your influence, and your cash and weapon reserves over time.

Romero Games is an independent studio run by Brenda and John Romero. It is the ninth studio established by John Romero, and this will be the studio's first game for consoles.

Surprise Pokemon Go Event Is All About Fossil Pokemon

4 years 2 months ago

A new event is now underway in Pokemon Go. Ahead of this weekend's Community Day, Niantic has kicked off a surprise event that revolves around fossil Pokemon.

For a limited time, 7 km eggs will exclusively hatch into fossil Pokemon such as Omanyte, Kabuto, Aerodactyl, Lileep, Anorith, Cranidos, Shieldon, Tirtouga, and Archen. These Pokemon will no longer hatch from other eggs, so the only way to obtain them will be from 7 km ones. Additionally, Riolu--the pre-evolved form of Lucario--will now hatch from 10 km eggs.

Niantic has not yet revealed how long this fossil Pokemon event will run, but you can read more about it on the official Pokemon Go website.

Pokemon Dev's Other RPG Heads To PS4 With Extra Content

4 years 2 months ago

Former Nintendo Switch exclusive Little Town Hero is headed to PlayStation 4 on June 2 with a few extra goodies, publisher NIS America announced on the PlayStation blog.

The headlining feature of Little Town Hero's Big Idea Edition is the inclusion of a new Easy Mode. It drops the strength and defense power of enemy attacks, as well as reduces the frequency of enemy special effects. In addition to this new difficulty setting, the Big Idea Edition comes with an art book, poster, lapel pin set, and official soundtrack with music composed by Undertale developer Toby Fox.

Developed by Pokemon makers Game Freak, Little Town Hero is a turn-based RPG with a unique combat system. As Axe, a big-eyed boy with even bigger ideas, you use your imagination to attack and defend your little town from large threats. It originally launched in October 2019 for Nintendo Switch.
