7-year-old Simone Lim Wins in Pokemon's Oceania Championships

4 years 2 months ago

In a major upset, 7-year-old Simone Lim won the Junior Championship division in the Pokemon Oceania International Championships. Hailing from Singapore, Lim beat out last year's winner, an older and a more experienced trainer, Justin Miranda-Radbord. A relative newcomer, Lim is in the midst of her first competitive season, making her victory all the more impressive.

Her match against Miranda-Radbord was a close one, with the crucial win coming down to the final moments of the third game. In what seemed like the moment Lim might very well lose, Miranda-Radbord eliminated her team down to Tryantir, while he still had two Pokemon, Rhypherior and Dusclops, remaining.

Cyberpunk 2077 Upgrades For Xbox Series X Will Be Free

4 years 2 months ago

Earlier today Microsoft pulled back the curtain on a host of details regarding the Xbox Series X, one of which was a program that will allow you to purchase a game once and have it apply across both Xbox One and Series X, but only if the developer chooses to allow it.

CD Projekt Red, developer of the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, has confirmed that it will support it for its latest role-playing game. In a tweet the company stated that "Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades," adding that Cyberpunk 2077 will be free on Xbox Series X for Xbox One players when it becomes available.

Madman Beats Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga With Almost No Studs

4 years 2 months ago

Like pasta without sauce or Abbott without Costello, playing a Lego game without collecting any plastic studs is just wrong. It's also basically impossible, as one Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga player just discovered.

YouTube user Sovern Gaming began a new version of the Lego Star Wars challenge he had attempted before, only this time he put the game in Free Mode so he could get more characters. During his previous attempt, he had to touch 217 studs in order to complete the game, and it had since been lowered to 212.

Xbox Series X Specs: Speed, SSD, Smart Delivery Feature, And More Detailed

4 years 2 months ago

Microsoft has announced several new details regarding its upcoming next-gen console, the Xbox Series X. An Xbox Blog post from Xbox head Phil Spencer focuses on a handful of key areas: hardware power, variable rate shading and ray-tracing, an improved quick resume function, and a feature Microsoft is calling "smart delivery."

The hardware will boast 12 TFLOPS of GPU power, which Microsoft notes is twice that of Xbox One X, based on an AMD Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architecture. A Variable Rate Shading technique allows the GPU to prioritize individual effects on specific game objects rather than focus on the entire screen. It will also sport hardware-based DirectX ray-tracing. The post also confirms SSD storage and 120 FPS support.

As for what all that power will go towards, Microsoft shared some end-user features too. The Quick Resume feature promises to be faster without waiting through loading screens, and now it can be used with multiple games at once. Xbox Series X will be backwards compatible with all previous generations of Xbox games and accessories. A new "Smart Delivery"' feature is essentially cross-buy, letting you purchase a game once and play it on whatever is the best hardware available. Microsoft says that developers and publishers will be able to choose to use the feature on games that release first on Xbox One and then later come to Xbox Series X.

They Made Sounds For Halo 3 By Smashing Xboxes With A Hammer

4 years 2 months ago

Video game composer Martin O'Donnell has shared another behind-the-scenes video from his time at Bungie working on the Halo series. This latest one focused on the music and audio from 2007's Halo 3, and it follows an earlier video that showed Steve Vai's incredible recording of the rockin' Halo 2 theme music.

In this unearthed video, we see and learn a lot of things, including the fact that a number of Halo 3's sounds came from dropping, scraping, and smashing an original Xbox with a hammer. There are a lot of other interesting insights and fun facts in the video. For instance, one of the sound designers recorded audio for soldiers walking through the beach by capturing his own footsteps on a beach in Mexico when he was on vacation.

Check out the full video below; it's well worth a watch for Halo fans. The Xbox-smashing bit starts at around 1:05.

Samurai Shodown Director Would Love To Reboot Another Big SNK Franchise

4 years 2 months ago

Samurai Shodown releases for Nintendo Switch releases on February 25, 2020, bringing the well-received fighting game reboot to Switch. Samurai Shodown has been praised as a high-quality entry in the long-running series, and now that it's done, director Nobuyuki Kuroki might be able to set his sights on another SNK series.

Talking to Nintendo Life about the impending Switch release, Kuroki revealed that the game he'd most like to bring back. "Personally, I wish that we can revive Garou: Mark of the Wolves," he told the site.

Garou, which launched in 1999 for the Dreamcast, is also technically the most recent entry in the Fatal Fury series, is a beloved game. The PC, PS4, and Vita versions recently received a substantial netcode update, which made them easier to play online without issue.

There's absolutely no confirmation that the game will actually return, though, and it's clear from the interview that this is Kuroki's desire rather than something that is in active development. SNK Corporation is currently working on another fighting game in a long-running series, with King of Fighters XV due to release in 2020 for PS4.

The second season of Samurai Shodown's DLC will start on February 26 with new fighter Mina Majikina.

Rainbow Six Siege, Now Four Years Old, Breaks Its Own Concurrent Player Record On Steam

4 years 2 months ago

Rainbow Six Siege, which launched in December 2015, has been supported with new DLC operators and maps ever since, allowing the game to grow over time. Now, an industry analyst has pegged the game as an amazing example of the benefits of long-term success as it hits a new major milestone.

Benji-Sales, who analyzes trends within the industry, has discovered and announced that Rainbow Six: Siege recently had its best day ever for concurrent players on Steam, with 180,000 players logging into the game at the same time. That figure does not account for players on Uplay or consoles, which means that the actual figure of online players would have been much higher.

League Of Legends Dev Responds To Latest Update In Gender Discrimination Lawsuit

4 years 2 months ago

The developer of League of Legends has responded to the latest development in the ongoing lawsuit where the company is accused of gender discrimination and having a "bro culture."

Recently, the group of former female employees of Riot Games hired a new legal team in an attempt to seek more damages. The new counsel withdrew the proposed settlement of $10 million, saying it was the result of "alleged mistakes and improprieties by prior class counsel."

The new legal team is seeking a bigger payout for the group of former employees, following the announcement from California labor groups, including the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), that said they should be paid $390 million more, bringing the total to $400 million.

The Mayor Of Boston Is Urging Sony To Return To PAX East

4 years 2 months ago

PlayStation has been dropping out of multiple expos and conferences lately, including both GDC and PAX East, citing fears over the coronavirus that has largely affected mainland China so far. The mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh, is not happy with Sony's decision to drop out of PAX East (which is a Boston event), and has penned a letter to Sony president Kenichiro Yoshida asking him to reconsider.

The letter, which has been reported on and excerpted from by WCVB, points out that the odds of contracting the virus in Boston are "extremely low"--there has been just one reported case of the virus in the city, and the patient is now recovering at home.

"These fears reinforce harmful stereotypes that generations of Asians have worked hard to dismantle," Walsh wrote in his letter. "They trigger our worst impulses: to view entire groups of people with suspicion, to close ourselves off, and to miss out on the opportunities and connections our global city provides."

Halo Infinite Toys Revealed, Showing Off Classic Armor For Master Chief

4 years 2 months ago

Even before Microsoft has properly unveiled Halo Infinite with any gameplay footage or firm details, the company's merchandising partners have revealed new Halo Infinite action figures that contain some clues about the Xbox and PC game.

First off, the new figures from Wicked Cool Toys show new armor for Master Chief that appear to more closely line up with Bungie's original armor designs. That is to say, these designs more closely resemble Master Chief's armor in Halo 1-3 before Microsoft shifted things up for Halo 4 and Halo 5 when development on the franchise moved from Bungie to 343 Industries.

This is to be expected, as Microsoft has said Halo Infinite new art style is meant to hearken back to the original Halo game. Halo Infinite returns to the franchise's roots, and is "bigger and bolder" than any previous Halo title, according to Microsoft.

Arcade1Up showed off an array of new arcade cabinets at CES 2020, and the NBA Jam cabinet with online-multiplayer capability was among the top of our list for the best of the big tech show. Now, as Toy Fair 2020 kicks off in New York City, Arcade1Up has opened up pre-orders for its new machines--NBA Jam, Frogger, and Pac-Man 40th Anniversary Edition. Frogger, on the other hand, focuses on Konami's classic games. The cabinet includes Frogger, Time Pilot, and Time Pilot '84. We played the Frogger machine at CES 2020 and were impressed with the light-up marquee and panel art of the classic, jaywalking frog.

Xbox One X Bundles Discounted To Their Best Prices Yet

4 years 2 months ago

2020 is all about the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft. Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X release this holiday season. But their predecessors will remain relevant for years to come thanks to huge install bases and massive back catalogs. Earlier this week, the PS4 Pro was discounted to $300, and now it's the Xbox One X's turn. Three Xbox One X bundles--Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Gears 5, and NBA 2K20--are currently discounted to $299 at major retailers, including Amazon and Walmart. The bundles regularly go for $500, and the current discounts actually beat their Black Friday prices by $50.

The Xbox One X, for the time being, is the most powerful home console and boosts the performance and resolutions of some Xbox One games. There are plenty of notable upcoming games in 2020 that will surely benefit from the increased power of the Xbox One X, including Doom Eternal, Resident Evil 3 Remake, Marvel's Avengers, Cyberpunk 2077, and Halo Infinite (also coming to Xbox Series X).

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Hands-On -- From Nervous To Excited

4 years 2 months ago

If you've ever played Animal Crossing, you know that you really have to take everything a day at a time--and in the beginning of the game, you have to be especially patient as the basics of your town open up to you. I recently played the first half hour or so of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and as I expected, not much technically happened in that time. But it was more than enough to set the tone for Tom Nook's island getaway, and it also assuaged some of my concerns about changes to the series formula for its debut on Nintendo Switch.

From the very beginning, there's already more freedom to customize than in any previous Animal Crossing game. This is the first main game in the series that lets you select a skin tone--in the past you had to "tan" by standing outside in the sun if you wanted to be anything besides pale--and on top of that, it's also the first one that gives you a character creation menu instead of having you take a quiz to determine your appearance. You can pick out your hairstyle and color, eye shape and color, nose and mouth types, and even cheek color before you begin, and you can always change your look later, too. There are also more hairstyles and eye shapes than in previous games.

You arrive on your deserted island of choice with Tom Nook, Timmy, Tommy, and two villagers. After some introductions, you get to decide where to put your tent and then weigh in on where each villager places theirs--they actually welcome the interference and will let you totally take over if you want. Once that's done, it's time to prep for a party. This is where gathering resources for crafting comes in; you need to get some tree branches for a campfire and some fruit for a tropical drink, which requires just a quick walk around the island.

Star Citizen Dev Reaches Lawsuit Settlement With Crytek

4 years 2 months ago

Crytek's lawsuit against Star Citizen developer Cloud Imperium Games has been settled. The lawsuit was originally filed in 2017, with the German developer and publisher suing the Star Citizen creators over breach of contract and copyright infringement claims.

Both companies previously discussed a dismissal of the suit but could not come to an agreement. It would now appear that they have. Terms of the arrangement were not disclosed, but both parties will move to jointly file to have the case dismissed within 30 days of the settlement agreement, as reported by Gamasutra.

Back in January, a filing suggested that Crytek wanted to temporarily dismiss the case and refile it when CIG released Squadron 42, the Star Citizen spin-off single-player campaign that kicked off the dispute. CIG shot back at this motion, stating that Crytek's claim "is and has always been meritless."

This Ghost Of Tsushima Remake In Dreams Looks Unbelievable

4 years 2 months ago

Ghost of Tsushima, the open-world samurai game in development for PlayStation 4 by the Infamous studio Sucker Punch Productions, still doesn't have a release date. So eager fans have taken to the game creation toolkit Dreams to recreate Ghost of Tsushima's stunning E3 2018 gameplay reveal--and it's quite uncanny.

The resemblance basically mirrors that of the E3 2018 demo. Minus a few complex animations, an obvious dip in visual fidelity, and a subtraction in on-screen enemy numbers, the Dreams recreation recaptures Ghost of Tsushima's gameplay reveal with precision. It even features that really cool iaijutsu (quick-draw) strike, which is pretty much a flashy, one-hit-kill swipe with a katana directly from its sheath. Check it out below.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2 Likely To End In Late April

Fortnite just began Chapter 2 Season 2, a new update themed after espionage between dueling spy agencies. That means a new battle pass and rewards to earn, but just how long you have to complete it is open to speculation. Based on an in-game message, the end of the season appears to be coming in late April.

GamesRadar reports that an in-game message on the refund policy suggests the end-date will be on or around April 30. That date is a Thursday, and the big seasonal updates tend to come on Thursdays. That would also make the current season ten weeks, which is the usual length for a Fortnite season.

Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron Takes The Series To The Skies

4 years 2 months ago

Between Total War: Warhammer, Space Hulk: Tactics, Warhammer: End Time - Vermintide, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine--among dozens and dozens of others--the Warhammer franchise has touched pretty much every genre imaginable. Up until this point, however, there haven't been any flight sims.

Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron, announced today by developer Phosphor Games, fills that gap. From the name alone, die-hard Warhammer fans will know the game focuses on Orks, the hilarious green-skinned-maniacs who love warfare more than any other faction in the Warhammer universe.

Players will be able to choose from one of five Ork Clans in Dakka Squadron: Blood Axes, Goffs, Bad Moons, Death Skullz, and Evil Sunz. Each faction has their own unique traits and abilities, taking to the skies in Dakkajets, Blitza-Bommas, and Burna-Bommas.

Nvidia Teases Thousands More Games For GeForce Now As Service Reaches Subscriber Milestone

4 years 2 months ago

Nvidia has already reached a milestone with its GeForce Now streaming service, with the company celebrating over 1 million subscribers just a few weeks after its launch.

The subscriber total includes all new users from both the free plan and the Founder's membership, which itself includes a 90-day trial. Nvidia notes that it's important for its premium tier to offer a trial--not only for players, but for developers who might want to see the service in action before deciding on support for it.

Nvidia has had some trouble with that already, with Activision Blizzard yanking support for all of its games shortly after launch (which was due to an apparent misunderstanding). Nvidia notes that it foresees far more games joining the service than leaving, and teases more news on returning titles soon.

Nintendo Switch Eshop Gets Retro Releases This Week

4 years 2 months ago

The Nintendo Switch has added dozens more games on its Eshop again, and this week the standouts are almost all retro favorites. The additions, some of which are coming through next week, include Mega Man Zero/ZX Collection, Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition, and the Double Dragon / Kunio-kun Bundle.

The MMZ/ZX Collection compiles six games that first appeared on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS: Mega Man Zero 1-4, ZX, and ZX Advent. The Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition brings back the stylish demon-slaying action game from the PS2 era, with a few new bells and whistles like local co-op. The Double Dragon and Kunio-kun includes classics like Double Dragon 1-3, along with Kunio-kun games like River City Ransom and Super Dodge Ball, along with several that haven't been released in the US before. Another notable (but not particularly retro) release is One Finger Death Punch 2, the sequel to the stickman brawler.

These also join the free NES and SNES games included in a Switch Online subscription this week--Shadow of the Ninja and Eliminator Boat Duel on NES, and Pop'n TwinBee and Smash Tennis on SNES. The SNES games are rarities since they've never had a US release before.

Rainbow Six Siege Makes Explosions Even Deadlier

4 years 2 months ago

Rainbow Six Siege's explosions are about to get a whole lot better, or worse, depending on if you get caught in the blast radius. Walls and barriers will still be your friend, but they might not be enough to say save you from the deadliest grenades.

Beginning with Rainbow Six Siege Year 5 Season 1, a new shrapnel system is factored into explosions. Destructible objects will not limit the range of an explosions' damage, and shrapnel hole swill be visible in cover to make it clear where the initial blast came from. This should not only make grenades more effective, but reduce confusion among players.

Homeworld Dev Has A Cool New Sci-Fi Salvaging Game Coming

4 years 2 months ago

Blackbird Interactive, developers behind Homeworld 3 and Deserts of Kharak, have a new intergalactic game forthcoming. Titled Hardspace: Shipbreaker, the game is in first-person and casts the player as a shipbreaker, who apparently has some hefty debt and needs to repay it by scavenging parts off of dead space ships.

Players will get to use a laser cutter and other cool tools to complete the job, with the caveat that electrocution, being blown up, and asphyxiation are all hazards of the occupation. (Resurrection adds more to the debt.)

If you're looking to get a taste of the gameplay, Hardspace: Shipbreaker will be available through Steam's Early Access sometime this summer at a currently unknown price. The Early Access version will include Act 1 of the campaign, which will require around 15-plus hours of gameplay to complete, and a "freeform sandbox mode" that allows for hundreds of more hours of gameplay. Players will have the choice of two types of spaceships to scavenge from and lots of salvaging tools and suit parts that they can upgrade. The total debt to pay back in the campaign will be 999,999,999 credits.

League Of Legends Dev May Need To Pay Much More To Settle Gender Discrimination Lawsuit

4 years 2 months ago

In December, it was reported that League of Legends developer Riot Games would pay $10 million to settle a gender discrimination lawsuit. However, this settlement total was later thought to be many millions lower than what it should have been, and now it's been withdrawn by the legal team representing the staffers who filed the lawsuit in the first place.

A new team of lawyers hired by the former female employees of Riot Games withdrew the proposed settlement of $10 million, saying it was the result of "alleged mistakes and improprieties by prior class counsel," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The members of the class action group have now hired women's rights attorney Genie Harrison and employment lawyer Joseph Lovretovich to take over for the previous counsel.

PUBG Update 6.2 Will Add PS4 And Xbox One Cross-Play

4 years 2 months ago

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) recently released released patch 6.2 on PC, adding a team deathmatch mode to the game. The update will make its way to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game soon too, and is now available on the Public Test Server.

Beyond everything else included in the patch, this update will finally allow players to make cross-platform parties, meaning that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players can party up before the beginning of a match.

While cross-play has been available for some time now, this is a new feature, and it'll make it much easier for players to team up with their friends on other systems. Previously, a PUBG match could be populated with players from either console, but parties could only be formed by players on the same console; as of 6.2, that restriction will no longer be in place.

All four games will be available for Stadia owners, but users with a Stadia Pro subscription will be able to pick up the two most recently released games, SteamWorld Dig 2 and SteamWorld Quest, at no additional charge.

All four games have been critically well received, and SteamWorld Quest is yet to make its way to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One yet. After launch, the game received a major update that added a new difficulty level and a New Game Plus mode.

Hopefully we'll have release dates for these new Stadia games soon.

Dreams Dev Is "Totally All-In" On The Game, So Don't Expect New LittleBigPlanet

4 years 2 months ago

It seems unlikely that Media Molecule will return to the Little Big Planet franchise, at least not anytime soon or with a direct sequel. Studio director Siobhan Reddy said in a new interview that the studio is "all-in" on its recently launched game-creation game, Dreams, leaving no bandwidth for more LittleBigPlanet games from the team.

"We're all-in all Dreams," Reddy said. "That's what we're all doing right now. We've got so many plans, and we are a really small team. It's going to take every one of us, working on it together to get through all those plans that we have."

As Reddy mentioned, Media Molecule is a relatively small studio by AAA standards, with around 50 people on staff. The company has an extensive roadmap of ongoing support and content for Dreams, which is taking up the studio's time currently.

The first weekly set is called Brutus's Briefing, and it's related to one of the new character skins you can unlock through the Season 2 Battle Pass.

Tying into the season's spy theme, one of Week 1's challenges asks you to disguise yourself in a Phone Booth in different matches. If you're not sure where those can be found, we've put together the map and guide below to help you out.

Where Are The Phone Booth Locations?

There are several Phone Booths scattered about the island, many in the new areas that were added as part of Season 2. You only need to disguise yourself in three of them to complete this challenge, however, so we've marked down the locations of three of the Phone Booths on the map below:

Best Gaming Headsets In February 2020: PS4, Xbox One, PC, And Switch

4 years 2 months ago

The gaming headset market is absolutely packed nowadays, which makes finding the best gaming headset to keep you comfortable while gaming a difficult task. Each pair of headphones boasts all kinds of key features, and it's hard to know which ones actually matter. Are there downsides to buying wireless over-ear headphones? How universal is compatibility among headsets? How important are sound quality and surround sound audio? Can I tell from images whether a headset will be a comfortable fit? Should I get memory foam or something with fabric? What are planar magnetic drivers, and should I care? Are LED lights cool?

The most important thing to keep in mind when looking for the best gaming headset isn't necessarily high-end audio latency--that is, the delay between the action happening on screen and the time it takes for the audio associated with that action to reach your ears. Naturally, when playing video games, especially action games that require quick reactions, you want the lowest possible latency. Depending on what your situation, you might also be looking for a good microphone to go along with good audio and low latency.

Bluetooth wireless headphones are generally good enough but will, in most cases, usually suffer from some latency, but unless you're looking for a truly professional gaming headset, that might not matter. Wireless gaming headsets, like the ones we've featured, will usually have their own proprietary dongle that uses a short-range wireless signal, which minimises the latency greatly. If you're a massive stickler for best absolute best possible audio quality and latency however, you might want to stick to a purely wired solution.
