Trippy New Puzzle Game Maquette Has You Explore A World Within Itself

4 years 2 months ago

Maquette, a new first-person puzzler from Graceful Decay and published by Annapurna Interactive, has been announced for PC. It's will release on Steam, but currently has no release date.

A love story wrapped in a puzzle game, Maquette is billed as a recursive puzzler where you'll explore a world within itself. Approach the center of the core grand structure, and you'll be greeted with a smaller representation of the level you're in. Manipulating one level has an immediate effect on the other, letting you witness small objects existing as much large ones in the same view.

It's a concept that's quite striking, as you can see in the reveal trailer above. Each level features new puzzles that tie into an ongoing imaginative love story, using the world's sense of scale to accentuate how small issues can have large effects on its surroundings.

The First-Ever Pokemon Of The Year Has Been Revealed

4 years 2 months ago

Earlier this month, The Pokemon Company and Google collaborated to let fans vote on their favorite monster in the "Pokemon of the Year" competition. The vote counted up players' picks from all eight regions, and to celebrate Pokemon Day, we have a winner: Greninja.

The amphibious ninja Pokemon took home the top prize, likely for its strange appearance and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate prowess as much as its usefulness in the Pokemon games themselves. We aren't sure why Totodile was disrespected like this, but we're thinking our own votes may have been thrown out due to some technicality.

The Pokemon YouTube channel also revealed the other top contenders for the prize, and it's a mix of classic and newer Pokemon.

New Platinum Games Tokyo Studio Will Develop Live-Service Games

4 years 2 months ago

Acclaimed action game developer Platinum Games has several projects in the works, including a Wonderful 101 remaster and the hero-focused action game Project GG, but it's also moving into entirely new territory. The company is opening another studio focused on live-service games, and it's looking to hire new developers quickly.

Located in Tokyo, the new Platinum Games studio will be helmed by former EA, Sony, Disney Interactive, and Sony developer Motoi Fujita. Platinum Games' Tokyo studio will develop "live ops" games for consoles, and Fujita has experience with live services on both console and mobile because of his time on the FIFA franchise.

"On live ops titles, finding a following for the title is an important step, so Platinum definitely has an advantage here," Fujita said in an interview. "And I believe this can also be a change to introduce a new wave of fans to Platinum Games' titles."

Zarude, Pokemon Sword & Shield's New Mythical Pokemon, Officially Revealed

4 years 2 months ago

As teased, The Pokemon Company has revealed a new Mythical Pokemon for Sword and Shield as part of its Pokemon Day celebration. The new Pokemon is called Zarude, and it'll play a major role in the upcoming Pokemon movie, Coco, which premieres in Japan later this year.

Zarude is known as the Rogue Monkey Pokemon. It's a Dark/Grass-type with the Ability Leaf Guard, which prevents it from being inflicted by status conditions when the weather on the battlefield is sunny. According to the Pokemon website, Zarude is able to grow vines from its wrists, neck, and feet, and can use these to battle or treat wounds thanks to the vines' healing properties.

Few other details have been revealed about Zarude thus far, but the official Pokemon website confirms that you won't be able to obtain it in Sword and Shield through normal gameplay, which suggests it will be released as part of a special distribution or event. The Pokemon Company teases that "more information [is] coming soon."

Dragon Quest 11 For Switch Is On Sale For Its Best Price Yet

4 years 2 months ago

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is one of the best Japanese role-playing games on Nintendo Switch. It also happens to be one of the third-party Switch games that really holds its price. Dragon Quest XI released last September for Switch, and we've never seen it for less than $50, and even a $10 discount has been rare. If you've been holding out for a better price, DQXI is discounted to $37.49 at Target right now.

There is a catch here, though. The discount is only good for in-store pickup online orders, so if you don't live near a Target store, you won't easily be able to take advantage of this excellent deal.

The Switch version, which received a 9/10 in GameSpot's Dragon Quest X1 review, is the "Definitive Edition" for good reason. It features two totally different graphical styles: modern 3D visuals and a top-down 2D render modeled after the old SNES games. The Switch version also adds bonus content found in the original 3DS version that was exclusive to Japan. The soundtrack is also fully orchestrated, replacing the maligned music found in the PS4 and PC versions of its US release.

Nioh 2 Trial Teaser Shows Off Brutal New Weapon

4 years 2 months ago

Nioh 2 is right around the corner, and you can try the Souls-like before it launches during a special free trial period on PS4. Koei Tecmo released a teaser trailer to show off the trial, and it's every bit as flashy and intense as we expected.

The Nioh 2 Last Chance Trial features three missions from the game, including the Mount Tenno location, and the character you make during the demo will transfer into the full version. Your progress won't, but it gives some incentive to play the trial for those already set on purchasing the game. Unlike in the first Nioh, you play as an avatar rather than a set character, so you can go nuts to make them look as ridiculous as possible. Those who play the trial will also get the Kamaitachi Helmet in the full game.

Microsoft Comments On Coronavirus Impact, Xbox Not Mentioned

4 years 2 months ago

Microsoft today issued an alert regarding the coronavirus and how its spread has already and will continue to impact the company's business going forward. In a news release, Microsoft said it expects the More Personal Computing division--which includes Xbox--to make less money during the quarter than previously projected.

Microsoft said in January that it expected the More Personal Computing business unit to make between $10.75 billion and $11.15 billion for the current quarter. However, the company is now telling analysts and investors to expect a number below even the low-end of projections due to the coronavirus.

Microsoft's supply chain is "returning to normal operations at a slower pace than anticipated," the company said. Due to this, the company isn't expecting to make as much money. The Windows OEM and Surface categories were specifically called out as being "more negatively impacted than previously anticipated."

Roblox Is Now Valued At $4 Billion

Roblox, an online gaming platform most popular with Gen Z, has raised $150 million in Series G funding, the Wall Street Journal has reported. This comes as Roblox Corporation announced a new milestone of 115 million monthly users, a dramatic increase from the 100 million it gained when it surpassed Minecraft’s player base last August.

While older gamers might not have paid much attention to the cutely stylized gaming hangout, Roblox has seen huge growth in the last few years with younger audiences.

Only last year it was valued at $2.5 billion, with Roblox claiming that half of all American children between the ages of 9 and 12 used its platform. Last year it broke into the top five most watched games on YouTube.

Insurgency: Sandstorm Is Coming To PlayStation 4 And Xbox One

4 years 2 months ago

Insurgency: Sandstorm finally has a console release date, over a year after the game's initial, fairly buggy PC release. The game, which focuses on realism and teamwork, stripping the UI back to the essentials, will release for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on August 25, 2020.

You can see the console release date announcement trailer below, which shows off the gritty combat. It's a primarily competitive game, featuring multiple online modes where you fight against other players. There's also a co-op mode, Checkpoint, where players team up to fight AI and complete objectives.

The game has been praised for its audio design, which aims for heightened realism and more intense battle noises.

The game is playable at PAX East over the weekend of February 28 to March 2, if you're in Boston. This is good news, since The Last of Us Part II demo won't be there and companies like CD Projekt Red and PUBG Corporation have also pulled out over fears sparked by the coronavirus.

If you're after a different shooter to kill time until Insurgency: Sandstorm releases on consoles, here's our list of the best shooters of 2019.

Rainbow Six Siege Update--Test Server Patch Notes Make A Major Change To Ying

4 years 2 months ago

Rainbow Six Siege is testing out a major change for one of its operators with the latest test server patch. Ying, an operator introduced back in Year 2, is ditching her frag grenades in favor of a claymore.

The notes for this patch on Reddit explain the rationale behind this decision: "We still feel we want to emphasize her teamwork, and are making a few adjustments while she's on the TS to gather some more data." There's no guarantee that this change will make its way over into the game proper, but if it tests well, it just might.

Significant reworks that change weapons are rare in Rainbow Six Siege, although recently the developers announced that Tachanka would be ditching the turret in favor of a grenade launcher. Obviously Ubisoft is doing something right, because the game is more popular than ever.

Diablo 4's Creepy New Cannibal Enemies Are Fast And Hungry

4 years 2 months ago

Diablo IV is handling enemies a bit differently from before, sorting them into "family" groups that are divided by their feel, look, and combat style. The families will better flesh out the game's open world, making it feel more cohesive. This is all explained in Blizzard's new quarterly update for the game, which dives deep into a newly announced family of enemies--the Cannibals.

There are four members of the Cannibal family, all of which, true to their name, delight in eating people--if you spot dead bodies "riddled with bite marks" in-game, the Cannibals are likely nearby. Diablo IV is returning to the series' dark roots, and the cannibals are certainly creepy. Each member has a unique weapon, as well as a "significantly different silhouette or stance" so that they can easily be told apart.

You'll need to buy two participating products at once, and while you can buy the bars early you cannot claim the DLC until the game is out for PlayStation 4 on April 10. The deal will not extend outside America, either, which makes sense: Butterfinger is a distinctly American product.

Xbox Series X: Microsoft Reveals New Features And Discusses Teraflops, Ray-Tracing

Hryb has had an Xbox Series X at home for months now. He said on his podcast that his console had a system update and he expected to have to re-load his game once it was finished. But no. Hryb said he was able to boot directly back into the game. "So it survives a reboot," he said.

Character customization is a big deal for the Animal Crossing fans. In previous iterations of the series, players had little control over their characters' facial features or skin tone, and haircuts were a bit of a guessing game. Now, players have far more control over their villagers' appearance right from the beginning of the game.

Super Smash Bros-Inspired Brawlhalla Adds New Crossover Character

4 years 2 months ago

Developers Blue Mammoth Games and Crystal Dynamics have teamed up to deliver a brand-new character to Brawlhalla's roster. Lara Croft is the free-to-play fighter's latest Epic Crossover, collaborations between Brawlhalla and big-name pop culture properties like Adventure Time and Steven Universe, bringing with her an additional game mode and stage as part of a new Tomb Raider in-game event that runs until March 16.

Lara Croft's moveset mirrors that of Diana, the black-and-red clad hunter with high dexterity and speed; albeit with her own "unique signature attack designs, custom select animations, sound effects, two brand-new weapon skins, and a dedicated roster spot," according to a press release. She comes equipped with her twin pistols and bow, and has a variety of skins that play off her two now-iconic looks: the classic blue-top-and-brown-shorts combo from the first Tomb Raider game in 1996 and her "survivor" getup seen in recent entries like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Please, Bungie, Don't Make Destiny 2's Weapons Like Destiny 1

4 years 2 months ago

When Destiny first launched, I kind of hated it. Bungie's weirdo space shooter was a delight to play when you were actually shooting things, but lost momentum as it picked up all the worst habits of MMOs. In the early days of Destiny, even in the endgame, you were constantly grabbing up new guns and tossing your old ones because of the slightly higher number on the new ones. The loot chase in the game was tedious and time-consuming, forcing you to play and replay content to make minor gains that never seemed like they amounted to much.

Destiny has come a long way since those days, first through the latter expansions of the original game, then through a bunch of smart and interesting changes in Destiny 2. Today, I play Destiny 2 almost every day and the franchise has gone from one of my most reviled to one of my most beloved. I love whipping through the Crucible and raids, I'm fascinated by the story, and I have a heap of cool weapons to use in a variety of situations. I even have come around on chasing the best gun stat rolls, something I'm usually loathe to do in games such as this--it's the thing that keeps me from picking up other MMOs or loot shooters. For some reason, Destiny 2 continues to cut through the noise and make me happy.

Amazon Prime Day Shortages May Occur Due To Coronavirus, Report Says

4 years 2 months ago

We're a handful of months away from Amazon Prime Day, but with the rising threat of COVID-19, more commonly known as coronavirus, the deals may not be as abundant as past years. In a new report from The New York Times, the retailer is apparently concerned it won't be able to meet demand during its big sale, as factories in China are shut down as the virus spreads.

The New York Times reports that Amazon is taking measures to combat stock shortages, including ordering more than its usual amount of products--six to eight weeks' worth as opposed to its regular two to three weeks. The report also says Amazon is contacting third-party sellers in order to assess stock availability for Prime Day--some companies are reportedly not advertising on Amazon to ensure there is stock available for the July sale.

An Amazon spokeswoman told The New York Times, "Out of an abundance of caution, we are working with suppliers to secure additional inventory to ensure we maintain our selection for customers ... We are monitoring developments related to the coronavirus and taking appropriate steps as needed."

Pokemon Go Clone Guide: Every Clone Pokemon And How To Catch Them

4 years 2 months ago

Pokemon Go's Pokemon Day event is underway until March 2. Not only has Niantic brought Armored Mewtwo back for the occasion, it has also introduced new kinds of Pokemon to the game: Clone Pokemon. Like Mewtwo, you can encounter these monsters in Raids, but they'll only be around for a limited time. If you're hoping to catch a few of them while you can, we've broken down everything you need to know about Clone Pokemon below.

What Are Clone Pokemon?

Like Armored Mewtwo, Clone Pokemon are from the Pokemon movie Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution (which itself is a CG remake of the very first Pokemon film from 1998). They are just as their name says--cloned versions of other Pokemon that Mewtwo created. While their general appearance is the same, they feature unique patterns on their bodies that regular Pokemon don't have.

Faction Rallies Aren't Coming Back To Destiny 2, But The Gear Is

4 years 2 months ago

One of Destiny 2's toughest events is making a comeback next season with the return of the Trials of Osiris, but Bungie has confirmed another limited-time event won't be returning anytime soon. That event is its Faction Rally, in which players complete bounties for special gear. While the event isn't returning, the good news is, the loot will soon be making a return.

In another big Director's Cut blog post, Destiny 2 game director Luke Smith quickly mentioned a few big changes the developer is looking to make to the game going forward. One is an adjustment to how Destiny 2 handles seasonal content, although details on how seasons will change in the future haven't been hammered out yet. Another is a shift that might make some weapons obsolete in endgame content after a set period, a change that sounds a lot like going back to the days of Destiny 1. And an in a quick aside, Smith addressed Faction Rallies, which haven't appeared in the game since Destiny 2's first year. They won't be coming back anytime soon, Smith said.

"Lots of folks have been wondering if Faction Rallies will return," Smith wrote. "We have no plans to bring back Faction Rallies. The reward gear hasn’t been used that much, our character cast is growing too large, and crucially, they didn’t drive a bunch of engagement with the game."

Red Dead Redemption 2's Hot Coffee Mod Is In Hot Water

4 years 2 months ago

Modders have had an enjoyable time with Red Dead Redemption 2 since its release on PC in November 2019. Whether it's letting the player fly around as an eagle, turning Arthur Morgan into the Joker, or being able to access freecam and enable a photorealistic reshade. Much like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas before it, there's even a Hot Coffee mini-game now, too. Publisher Take-Two Interactive would prefer that there wasn't, however.

Hot Coffee was an inaccessible mini-game in San Andreas where protagonist CJ could have sex with his girlfriend. The simulated intercourse was fully clothed and more humorous than anything else, but it gained infamy in 2005 when the game was released on PC and modders dug it out of the code. There was plenty of furore from lawmakers and the public alike, and San Andreas was quickly re-rated as "Adults Only" by the ESRB until Rockstar patched the content out.

Diablo 4 Devs Talk Controller Support On PC, UI Changes

4 years 2 months ago

The team behind Diablo IV have released the first in a series of quarterly blog posts taking a look at some of the changes coming to the series, particularly in the UI department.

As part of the game's darker art direction, Blizzard has rejiggered the inventory system to make the individual parts more visible during hectic play, primarily by changing the color spread and contrast levels of the UI. In terms of general UI design, the PC version of Diablo IV will allow players to choose either a center or left-corner configuration for their status bar, while the console version will use the corner option.

According to the post, all items in Diablo IV will take up the same number of inventory slots, as the team feels that they don't want to interrupt gameplay with "pockets of inventory management." Diablo IV will also allow the player to bind any skill to any key, including left-click, which was a feature that many fans requested. The game supports either controller or mouse and keyboard on PC, which required the team to unify the UI for ease of use on either control setup.

Temtem Targeting Spring 2021 Release On PS4, Xbox One, And Nintendo Switch

4 years 2 months ago

The Pokemon-inspired Temtem is off to a strong start, just in early access on Steam so far. But developer Crema has bigger plans for the full launch, including ports to consoles next spring. The studio shared its plans in the latest content roadmap.

Following up on another roadmap that detailed short-term plans through most of 2020, the studio outlined some of its long-term goals. The studio says that it expects to have the console ports (previously announced for Switch, PS4, and Xbox One) ready for the 1.0 release in spring 2021.

It also took a moment to address how the versions will interact with each other. Crema says cross-play between versions is technically very simple, and platforms have recently been very open with each other so it seems achievable. Cross-save is more technically challenging, Crema says, but the studio feels confident it can make it work.

Wolcen: Lords Of Mayhem Patch Notes Nerf The Game's Most Powerful Ability

4 years 2 months ago

Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem has been receiving numerous updates since its launch out of early access earlier this month, addressing multiple technical issues and tweaking endgame content. The patch notes for Patch 1.0.5.0 are here, and it's another sweeping list if ability nerfs, campaign fixes, and a glimpse of what's to come.

Developer Wolcen Studio explains in a brief update that it has heard player requests to keep the ability to convert unique items into legendary ones, but has removed the functionality until it can properly rework it. It also acknowledges the shortcomings of unique gear for endgame players, promising that a future patch will rework raw numbers on the items to make them more viable.

The current patch addresses large swathes of technical issues, with the most egregious being game-breaking bugs. The most common is a glitch that renders the final boss of the campaign invincible, forcing you to restart the entire three-phase encounter. Other fixes address spotty audio problems, issues with networked matchmaking, and several inventory bugs.

GOG Now Allows Refunds On All Games Within 30 Days Of Purchase

4 years 2 months ago

If you've been burned in the past by a game purchase you regret, GOG just announced a policy that might please you. The game store formerly known as Good Old Games will now allow users to refund a game within 30 days of purchase, even if you're launched or played it. The policy does not apply to gifts received from friends or for individual DLC packs, however.

According to the policy details, GOG says that it may refuse refunds in cases where users attempt to "hurt the developers that put their time and heart into making great games." While it's difficult to know exactly what that means, given that there's no stated limit to the number of refunds offered, users should probably refrain from refunding every game they mildly dislike, lest they lose the privilege entirely.

This new refund policy is perhaps the most generous offered by any of the various PC game storefronts on the current market. Both Steam and the Epic Games Store allow users to request refunds for any reason within two weeks of purchase, provided that they have not played the game for more than two hours. GOG's policy has no such cap.

Shovel Knight Dev Announces New Games

4 years 2 months ago

Independent studio and Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club Games borrowed a page out of Nintendo's book by hosting a Direct-style presentation of its own, where the team made a bunch of announcements. Among them was a brand-new game, additional characters for upcoming titles, a release window for another game, and more. We've compiled a roundup of all the news that came out of the YCG Presents livestream below.

Shovel Knight Enters The Dungeon

One of the upcoming projects from YCG is the newly-announced Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon. In a press release, YCG described the game as "an action-packed puzzle adventure mashup." In Pocket Dungeon, you guide the titular Shovel Knight as he makes his way through various environments. Every move you make causes the puzzle to shift. Bump into an enemy and you attack; run into an item and you pick it up.

Pocket Dungeon also features local multiplayer, allowing you to go head-to-head against your friends. And in addition to a brand-new Shovel Knight experience, YCG has introduced a new character you will meet during the journey: Puzzle Knight. It's fitting since Pocket Dungeon is a roguelike puzzler. A release date or platforms have not been provided, but YCG is bringing a playable demo of Pocket Dungeon to PAX East.

PS4's Free PlayStation Plus Games For March 2020 Revealed

4 years 2 months ago

It's hard to believe it's nearly March. The new month is bringing some of the first major game releases of 2020, but for PlayStation Plus members, it also means a new batch of PS4 free games will become available. Right on schedule, PlayStation has announced March's PS Plus games, which will be free to claim starting March 3. Until then, there's still time to claim February's free PS Plus games: BioShock: The Collection, The Sims 4, and Firewall Zero Hour (PSVR). As usual, these games are free to keep as long as you have an active PlayStation Plus subscription.

First up for PS Plus members in March: Shadow of the Colossus, an HD remake of the 2005 PS2 classic. Shadow of the Colossus follows a man named Wander who travels across a forbidden land to battle massive, armored colossi. The game earned a "superb" 9/10 in GameSpot's Shadow of the Colossus review for its stunning visuals, riveting fights, and very good horse.

Square Enix Will Keep Releasing Xbox One And PS4 Games Alongside Next-Gen Versions

4 years 2 months ago

Some major game publishers are likely champing at the bit to release exclusively next-generation games this holiday, but Square Enix isn't one of them. The company is planning on supporting both generations for now, and backward compatibility is a major reason why.

Speaking at a financial Q&A presentation earlier this month, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda explained that the PS5 and Xbox Series X will both support previous generations' games. In the near-future, Square Enix will develop games for both generations, and will hold off on developing next-gen exclusives for the time being.

"It will therefore be somewhat [further] down the road that we release titles exclusively for the next-generation consoles," Matsuda said.

Platinum Games Reveals Project G.G. With Teaser Trailer; Watch It Here

4 years 2 months ago

Platinum Games has released the first teaser for Project G.G., a new IP that will be the first game both developed and published by the independent studio.

Game director Hideki Kamiya revealed the new title in an interview with Famitsu, where he compared the ideas for it to Ultraman. The teaser trailer backs that up, with a shot of an obscured hero with blue eyes facing off against a colossal kaiju in the downtown streets of an unnamed metropolis. Check it out below.

In a blog post, Kamiya stresses that Project G.G. is only a working title, and that the project itself is still in the very early stages of production. He explains that acting as a publisher affords him and his team far more creative freedom than before, but also invites new risks that Platinum Games will need to manage.
