Amnesia: Rebirth Is The Original Developer's Terrifying Return To The Series

4 years 1 month ago

Amnesia: The Dark Descent became a quick hit with the YouTube Let's Play community for its terrifying atmosphere and tone. Developer Frictional Games didn't develop its follow-up Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, but the studio is back for the third game, Amnesia: Rebirth, and it's due to arrive later this year.

Amnesia: Rebirth will feature a new protagonist, setting, and story, but it's being made in the spirit of the original game. That means a focus on scaring you above gameplay or systems innovation, and Frictional is focusing on delivering new types of horror in place of mere jump-scares.

"Set in the desolate landscape of the Algerian desert, the game will focus on new character Tasi Trianon as she sets out on a harrowing journey through devastation and despair, personal terror and pain, while exploring the limits of human resilience," Frictional Games said in the announcement.

First-Party Nintendo Switch Games Will Get Great Discounts For Mario Day

4 years 1 month ago

Over the past few years, March 10 has become a special day for Super Mario fans much like May 4 is a punny celebration for Star Wars fans. It's unknown who happened upon the fact the platforming hero's name resembles this date when stylized as MAR10, but Nintendo started embracing the holiday in 2016. Ever since then, Nintendo and major retailers have been offering discounts on Mario games and merchandise throughout Mario Day week. Target's latest ad reveals the first batch of Mario Day deals that go live Sunday, March 8, which includes discounts on first-party Nintendo games, accessories, and Mario plushies.

Three of the four Switch games that are discounted to $40 released just last year. The big one is Super Mario Maker 2, which rarely goes for under $50. The create-your-own 2D Mario game has a seemingly endless supply of user-created levels while also boasting an impressive single-player campaign designed by Nintendo. Super Mario Maker 2 is joined by the adorable Yoshi's Crafted World, and a pair of multiplayer-focused titles, Super Mario Party and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Target is also offering a two-pack of Joy-Con wheels ($15 value) with the purchase of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but it appears the game will be sold for its full $60 price.

Is Something Behind The Waterfall? A New Twitter Account Investigates

4 years 1 month ago

Waterfalls in video games are like Groucho glasses. Everyone knows they're hiding something, but we're never quite sure what it is. A new Twitter account called Is Something Behind the Waterfall? is helping to solve this problem by curating the best waterfall secrets across all sorts of games.

Created by the same user behind Can You Pet the Dog?, the Is Something Behind the Waterfall? account began a few months ago and not only reveals if there is a secret behind a game's waterfall, but what that secret happens to be. In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, for instance, you can find a treasure chest behind this particular waterfall.

There are only a few posts on the account so far, but they vary between newer games and retro ones. If you've ever missed a waterfall in Earthbound, you can correct that more than 25 years later, and even find a secret skull in the original Halo. The game just came to PC as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX Review Roundup

4 years 1 month ago

Pokemon Sword and Shield are getting big chunks of DLC this year, but Nintendo's blockbuster monster-catching series isn't going a year without a new packaged release. This time it's Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, a remake of the classic Red and Blue Rescue Team games from Game Boy Advance. The new game combines these with a lovely new art style.

As with the other Mystery Dungeon games, Rescue Team DX is a roguelike dungeon-crawler, where you and a companion Pokemon explore areas like caves to defeat monsters and collect treasure. The spin-off series has been secondary to the main Pokemon RPGs, but GameSpot's Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX review argues that it deserves its own place in our hearts.

"When the original pair of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games were released in 2006, they were received as the ugly Duckletts of Pokemon spin-offs," wrote Cian Maher. "Now, almost 15 years later, it is clear how wrong we were to write off Spike Chunsoft's ambitious take on the titanic series: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX for Switch is wondrous to play and, in a way, boasts a substantially more resonant fable than most other recent Pokemon games."

How The Final Fantasy 7 Remake Treats Female Friendships

4 years 1 month ago

Final Fantasy 7 was home to one of the most famous video game love triangles of all time, between Cloud and the two female leads, Tifa and Aerith. For the FF7 Remake, the introduction of these characters and their blossoming friendship has been further fleshed out with an extended period in Midgar. In an interview with GameSpot, the voices behind the characters say, as a result, the story and relationship feel refreshingly current.

"I asked a lot of questions cause I didn't understand. Are we rivals, competing for Cloud? What's happening?" said Britt Baron, who voices Tifa. "And what I ended up learning, at least in this iteration, I love the relationship that they have. They're friends. They're on the same team. It's not about these two women who could hate each other and be at each other's throats. [They] end up working together and becoming friends and fighting side by side. So I think coming out at a time like this, I was so happy for it and it's a really good lesson that women don't have to tear other women down."

Erica Lindbeck, who voices Jessie, added that the friendship between her character and Tifa is similar in tone. "I loved the relationship between Jessie and Tifa too," she said. "It was so sweet. I was like, 'Oh, this is dope. Girlfriends, girl power.'"

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Cast Gives Voice To A Classic

4 years 1 month ago

Few projects have amassed the level of expectation as Final Fantasy VII Remake. The highly-anticipated reimagining of the classic RPG is finally coming--at least, as a first piece in the multi-part saga--on April 10 for PS4. Unlike the original, it will feature a full voice cast to help imbue the iconic journey with a more cinematic quality. At PAX East, GameSpot spoke with four of the upcoming remake's cast members--Erica Lindbeck (Jessie), Gideon Emery (Biggs), Briana White (Aerith), and Britt Baron (Tifa). They each shared their thoughts on stepping into the roles of such beloved characters, the challenges of getting their performances just right, and how some parts of the story are timeless.

For some of the voice cast, the journey started years ago with the second trailer shown at the PlayStation Experience in 2015. That trailer will look familiar to those who have played the now-public demo, which heavily features the opening bombing run organized by the Avalanche revolutionary group. It uses the resistance members Jessie, Biggs, and Wedge to introduce the world and the stoic Cloud, and so their voice actors were brought on early.

Bleeding Edge Is Pretty Fun Once You Overcome Its Steep Learning Curve

4 years 1 month ago

Given my penchant for shooters as opposed to melee-focused action games, I'm a bit surprised by how much I enjoyed playing Bleeding Edge. At a press preview event, I played Ninja Theory's hero-focused multiplayer game for the first time (I missed chances at E3 and the open beta weekends) and Bleeding Edge impressed me with its satisfying combat and a surprising attention to sound design.

After spending 90 minutes with the game, it's so immediately apparent that Bleeding Edge started out as a multiplayer online battle arena game. Success is almost totally dependent on teammates communicating with each other and fulfilling the established roles of a balanced unit.

Might Be Too Role-Focused For Its Own Good

Every character in Bleeding Edge fits into one of three classes: damage, support, or tank. Bleeding Edge seems entirely dependent on a team fulfilling an exact quota: one damage, one tank, one support, and a fourth player who changes their role to fulfill the needs of the team. Bleeding Edge's meta allows for experimentation (in that you can pair different damage, support, and tank characters with one another), but it's a rigid level of choice--going without any one class will screw over your team.

The Last Of Us TV Show Writer Confirms He Won't Change Ellie's Sexuality

4 years 1 month ago

On Twitter, Craig Mazin, the writer and producer of the just announced The Last Of Us HBO show has confirmed that he will not be changing Ellie’s sexuality, much to the relief of fans.

Ellie’s sexuality has been a divisive issue among fans ever since it became apparent that Ellie was gay in the first DLC, Left Behind. Ellie's sexuality has been further confirmed by the marketing for The Last of Us Part II, with an early trailer showing her kissing another woman. Ellie is a rare example of a gay protagonist in a major AAA game, and Mazin clearly recognizes the importance of representing this in the series.

Someone Made A Baby Yoda Mod For Star Wars Battlefront 2, Because Why Not

4 years 1 month ago

After the success of The Mandalorian and the craze of memes and love surrounding Baby Yoda online, it’s surprising it took this long for a Baby Yoda mod to surface.

The mod replaces the BB-8 model in Star Wars Battlefront II, a hero character only added recently to the game. Due to the similar sizes of the characters, as this Baby Yoda is in his levitating cradle, switching them makes sense.

While this mod was originally teased near the end of last year as a joke, it was finally completed this week. The creators of this mod are also responsible for the cyborg Darth Maul and battle damaged Darth Vader cosmetic mods. Clearly Nanobuds is an individual with both style and talent.

Disgaea Spin-Offs Prinny 1 And 2 Are Coming To Switch

4 years 1 month ago

Prinny, a penguin who started life as a character in the Disgaea series before spinning off into two PSP games, is coming to Switch. Prinny 1•2: Exploded and Reloaded collects together Prinny: Can I Really Be The Hero? and Prinny 2 in one package, complete with upscaled graphics.

In the Prinny games, you have 1000 lives to get through every level. They're side-scrolling platformers that are known for being pretty difficult. You can check out gameplay from the new Switch version in the trailer below.

The first Prinny game received an 8/10 in the original GameSpot review, and reviewer Tom McShea wrote that it was "an undeniable success, even with a few missteps along the way." Prinny 2 was scored 6/10 in its own review, again by McShea: " Not only does Prinny's second effort fail to fix (Prinny 1's) problems, but it also adds new ones that sap away most of the joy present in the first game."

Battlefield 5 Adds A Much-Requested Feature After 457 Days Of Waiting

4 years 1 month ago

Battlefield 5's big new 6.2 update has now arrived--you can check out the full patch notes here. The update includes a number of updates and improvements for weapon balance, but there is one feature in particular new to the game that players have requesting for a very long time.

That's tank customization. This feature was promised to the Battlefield community some 457 days ago. Developer DICE is taking it all in stride, as Battlefield's community manager posted a picture of precisely how long the feature took to be released: 457 days, 6 hours, 33 mins, and 29 seconds.

As a thank-you for fans for their patience, DICE is giving away a set of tank customization items for the Sherman tank to those who log into Battlefield before March 24. This gift contains a cheeky nod to the long wait, as one of the customization items is a spray for "Coming Soon," which became a meme in the Battlefield community. Check out the images below to see more of the new tank customization options.

Those who have played Total War: Three Kingdoms will understand just how much these changes can affect the story line, with the DLC intending to create all new friction between different characters and factions.

Overwatch Competitive’s Hero Pool Is About To Rotate--Here’s Who’s Being Removed

4 years 1 month ago

Year three of the Overwatch League is underway and a large part of keeping this season new and exciting is the addition of Hero Pools. These Hero Pools are an alternative to how hero bans usually go down in tournaments, with players and coaches picking characters to ban at the start of each match. In Overwatch Competitive Season 21, four different heroes will be banned each week.

The most important part of this update is that these heroes aren’t just banned in the Overwatch League, but across all competitive play. This includes Competitive Play mode, which is available to any player in Overwatch, regardless of platform. Game modes like Quick Play and Arcade are not affected by the bans.

This week Hanzo, Mei, Orisa, and Baptiste are all banned. This follows the two DPS, one tank, and one support hero formula, which the Hero Pool system will stick to every week. Each week four heroes will be picked from those roles, with no hero being banned for more than two weeks in a row.

Destiny 2 Season Of The Worthy Patch Notes: Update Changes Lots Of Exotics

4 years 1 month ago

A big Destiny 2 patch is coming with the launch of the Season of the Worthy on March 10, and it'll extend beyond adding new content to the game. Bungie shared early details about what's coming with Update 2.8.0, which includes a bunch of changes to various Exotics and how they work in both PvE and PvP activities.

You can check out the full list of changes in the update in Bungie's latest weekly blog post. If you've spent time in the Crucible in the last two seasons, either as a Warlock or playing against them, you'll be interested in the change to Contraverse Hold. The Warlock Exotic gives you a powered-up Handheld Supernova grenade, while also reducing incoming damage. The result in the Crucible has made Handheld Supernova a very powerful move that almost always guarantees a kill, while making Warlocks very tough to take down. Bungie is shifting the Exotic to reduce its damage reduction from 40% to 20%, which will make Warlocks easier to kill when using it--bad news for fans of the Exotic, but good news for everybody else.

Another Exotic that gets heavy use in the Crucible is Titans' One-Eyed Mask, which allows you to track opponents who damage you and encourages you to chase them down and kill them. Bungie is changing that tracking so you won't be able to see enemies through walls anymore, and you won't get a damage boost when fighting your marked targets anymore. One-Eyed Mask also provides an overshield if you kill a marked enemy, but the update reduces its duration from eight seconds to six seconds.

Destiny 2's Power Cap Going Up 40 Levels In Season Of The Worthy

4 years 1 month ago

Each new season of Destiny 2 content includes an increase in the game's Power cap, pushing you to complete activities and gather new gear to make your characters as strong as they can be. The last few seasons have raised that cap by 10 points, but in the Season of the Worthy, the Power cap is leaping up 40 points, which will give players plenty to do over the next few months.

Bungie detailed the Power rise in its latest This Week at Bungie blog, which explains some changes to the way you'll increase your characters' strength when the Season of the Worthy kicks off on March 10. "Power" in Destiny 2 is a measure of the total strength of your character, based on the stats of your weapons and armor. The current soft Power cap in Destiny 2 is 960, which players can reach by completing events that drop "Powerful" gear. After that, you can work up to 970 through activities that drop "Pinnacle" gear, like the Garden of Salvation raid or the Pit of Heresy dungeon. Since the release of Shadowkeep, each season also includes a seasonal artifact that allows you to keep increasing your Power by earning experience points, but those Power gains disappear at with the end of each season.

GTA, Red Dead Parent Company Boss Responds To Coronavirus Concerns

4 years 1 month ago

Take-Two, the parent company of 2K Games and Rockstar Games, is the latest company to speak about the impact of the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick started off by stressing that the health and safety of people around the world is far more important than the business of making video games.

In terms of Take-Two's business, Zelnick said he is not concerned about a significant impact. Take-Two's Private Division has delayed the Switch version of The Outer Worlds due to the coronavirus, as the developers at port specialist studio Virtuos are based in China where their office was closed. However, Take-Two is not expecting a material impact beyond that, Zelnick said.

The global financial market may take a "real hit" due to the coronavirus, Zelnick said, but he doesn't believe the games business will be meaningfully impacted.

Gears 5 Update 4.2 Will Bring Back Horde Frenzy

4 years 1 month ago

The next major title update for Gears 5, title update 4.2 will release on March 10. Along with various fixes, it's also bringing back a fan-favorite mode from Gears of War 4. The mode, Horde Frenzy, is a half-length version of Horde mode that cranks up the intensity.

It's a 12-wave mode, which should take players about half an hour to play through, and every four waves there's a boss encounter--a mini-boss at 4, then a mini-boss and a boss at 8 and 12. You'll start with more power than in regular Horde mode, but it'll also ramp up faster. It's shorter than regular Horde, but beating it will still be a challenge.

Horde Frenzy will be available across the Exhibit, Forge, and District maps at first, but once Operation 3 drops, it will be available across all maps. The first week of Horde Frenzy will also be a week of Free Boost and Double Character XP across all Horde modes.

The update will make some other changes to the game, too, including a few basic fixes and balance changes. Here's the full list.

Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Surpassed Ocarina Of Time By Defying Its Influence

4 years 1 month ago

The Nintendo Switch is celebrating its third birthday this week, which means it's also the third anniversary of the system's marquee launch game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild--an exquisite open-world adventure that remains, arguably, the best title in the console's library. Much of the Switch's early success can be attributed to Breath of the Wild, as it gave the unorthodox system an enticing must-have experience from the outset, but perhaps even more importantly, the game breathed new life into the beloved-but-aging Zelda series.

Before Breath of the Wild arrived, the Zelda franchise was in something of a rut. The series had spent the past two decades struggling to step out of the monolithic shadow cast by Ocarina of Time, which is still widely regarded as one of the greatest video games ever made. Ocarina's influence on the medium cannot be overstated. In the burgeoning days of 3D gaming, when many developers were struggling to bring their franchises into the third dimension, Ocarina was a landmark title--a sprawling adventure that seamlessly reimagined the world of Hyrule and set the standard for all action-adventure games that would follow.

Control Will Get An Improved Map And The Foundation DLC This Month

4 years 1 month ago

Developer Remedy Entertainment has confirmed that its surreal action-adventure game Control will get some new content and improvement sometime this month on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The studio's communications director Thomas Puha tweeted that Remedy will drop The Foundation DLC at some point this March. With that expansion's launch, which is part of the game's $25 Season Pass, Remedy will also implement some quality-of-life improvements to enhance Control's gameplay. These improvements include more tweaks to the maligned map and "some other requested" changes. Puha provided no concrete date for when to expect these adjustments, but he did say Remedy will "show and talk about it soon."

The Foundation will be Control's first major expansion and follows December 2019's Expeditions DLC. Revealed as part of Control's roadmap, The Foundation will see Jesse Faden descend beneath the Bureau to restore order the Oldest House. The Foundation originally had a vague "early 2020" date attached to it and will be followed-up by Control's second expansion, AWE, in mid-2020. It seems the AWE DLC may connect Control to one of Remedy's most popular games, 2010's Alan Wake.

Best PS4 Controller To Buy In 2020

The best PS4 controllers to try in 2020

The PS4 has had an excellent generation, despite its slow start with must-play exclusive games. But while those big marquee exclusives trickled out slowly, the PS4 held on by delivering the best console versions of most third-party games. Now, the PS4 is knocking out multiple big exclusives every year, three of which will release in 2020--Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima, and The Last of Us Part II. Throughout the PS4's lifespan, however, Sony's DualShock 4 has been an incredible controller to experience all of the PS4's games with--especially since all it takes is the push of a button to share incredible moments like a hilarious glitch or beating a Bloodborne boss without getting touched.

You Might Have To Prove Your Age To Buy A Loot Box In Australia Soon

4 years 1 month ago

If you're planning to buy video game loot boxes in Australia, you might have to provide an ID soon. In a report prepared by the Australian House of Representatives Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs the body recommends that the government investigate options for age-gating loot boxes and other elements of gaming that could be considered virtual gambling.

"The committee recommends that the Office of the eSafety Commissioner or other relevant government department report to the Australian government on options for restricting access to loot boxes and other simulated gambling elements in computer and video games to adults aged 18 years or over, including through the use of mandatory age verification," a portion of the report reads.

The majority of the report explores the logic and effects of age-gating internet pornography on a massive scale, which recalls the UK's ill-fated attempt to pass a similar national barrier, which finally failed once and for all in October 2019. This isn't the first time that paid loot boxes have proven controversial to lawmakers. In the past, countries like Belgium and the Netherlands have passed regulations preventing the practice, which forced game developers to remove them from their games.

New Trials Of Mana Remake Trailer Focuses On Gameplay

4 years 1 month ago

Square Enix has released a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming remake of Trials of Mana, taking a deep dive into what features to expect when the game launches for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on April 24.

The video (which you can watch below) reveals that there are six playable characters to choose from when assembling your three-person party, much like the original game. Depending on who you pick, the story can play out in many different ways, too.

The trailer also shows off the customizable combat system, chain abilities that can be shared with your team, how to switch classes to gain strength and improve your stats, and how you can learn over 300 different abilities--with some of them being dependent on a day/night cycle.

You Can Snitch To Isabelle In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

4 years 1 month ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons revolves around a delightful vacation on Tom Nook's island getaway. And to make sure your time there stays delightful, you'll have Isabelle to confide in if any of the villagers get a little too wild. It'll be a way for you to get rid of any inappropriate clothing designs or dialogue villagers might use, but the process was definitely one of the funniest parts of our time playing the game because Isabelle is an international treasure.

We had a chance to play New Horizons through an expanded demo during PAX East 2020 and got a quick look at some of its new features. You can check out our tour of the island and some of the facilities on it in our gameplay video below, which includes the snitching process.

When you get the Town Hall on your island, you can find both Tom Nook and Isabelle there, and if you talk to Isabelle, you can change the island's song or flag, and you can report any of the villagers for wearing or saying anything out of line. We're fairly certain it's going to work similarly in New Horizons as it did in the previous game New Leaf; a simple method of preventing villagers from wearing with custom designs adopted from other players' islands that you find problematic. The same goes for if they say any custom phrases or words they got from another player's island.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fashion Options Have Me Hyped

4 years 1 month ago

There's nothing quite like rocking a fresh outfit comprised of a combat helmet and a bath towel on your island vacation. You can do that in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which we got to experience during a hands-on demo at PAX East 2020. In it, we saw just how much the Able Sisters shop has expanded with a larger catalog of clothing and accessories--shirts, jackets, dresses, pants, skirts, hats, helmets, glasses, shoes, socks...it was pretty overwhelming to put an outfit together.

Animal Crossing has given us customization options since its inception, letting you draw your own patterns and apply them to shirts and hats (or use as wallpaper) in the original, and expanding a bit more in follow-ups City Folk and New Leaf. However, New Horizons presents the biggest suite of options for the series thus far, which you can see in the video below (between 4:53 and 6:34).

What's more is that you can preview all clothing and accessories to see how they look on your character before buying anything. It's a quick and simple way to coordinate an outfit and purchase what you want in one fell swoop. Also, every time you select a different clothing item, your villager strikes a new pose and it's the cutest thing I've ever seen in Animal Crossing.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Museum Is Absolutely Wonderful

4 years 1 month ago

One of the biggest gameplay loops of Animal Crossing has been the act of collecting bugs, catching fish, and digging up fossils for your town's museum to put on display. Those things are still a core part of New Horizons, and this new entry into the Animal Crossing series will likely further motivate you to do all that, because the new museum is absolutely beautiful.

We had a chance to play an expanded demo of Animal Crossing: New Horizons at PAX East 2020, and we saw a little bit of the crafting system, a ton of fashion options you'll eventually unlock, and more of what the island has to offer. But the redesigned museum still stands out to me as one of my favorite features. You can see what I'm talking about in our gameplay video below (starting at 6:38).

Fortnite: Hydro 16, The Rig, And Logjam Woodworks Locations Guide

4 years 1 month ago

We've reached Week 3 of Fortnite Season 2, which means there's a new set of challenges to complete in the battle royale shooter. As before, this week's batch--TNTina's Trial--is themed after one of the new character skins you can unlock through the Season 2 Battle Pass. While most of the challenges fittingly revolve around explosives, one asks you to land at three specific landmarks: The Rig, Hydro 16, and Logjam Woodworks. If you're not sure where those are, we show you where to go below.

Where Are The Rig, Hydro 16, And Logjam Woodworks Locations?

All three landmarks that you need to visit for this challenge are located in the southwestern portion of the map, so they shouldn't be too difficult to track down. The Rig is perhaps the easiest to find; it's the small island in grid square B7. Logjam Woodworks is directly northeast of it in the corner of grid square B6. Finally, Hydro 16 is the dam on the western edge of the lake in the southern portion of the island. You can get a better look at where all three landmarks are on the map below.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Side Quests Will Be As Large As The Main Story

4 years 1 month ago

Final Fantasy VII Remake will only include a portion of the entire story from the original game, taking place solely in Midgar. Considering how small that portion is in the original, it's led many to wonder about how Square Enix plans to flesh it out more in its Remake. According to game co-director Tetsuya Nomura, that won't be an issue.

Speaking to Famitsu (translated by Dualshockers), Nomura mentioned how he and his team prioritized quality content over quantity, with some side content being cut. "At the beginning, the development team readied even more content, but we wouldn't have been able to do everything without cutting corners, so we prioritized quality," explained Nomura. "We wouldn't have been able to finish the game otherwise."

Nomura mentioned that this new side content is as large as the main story, but it's unclear whether he was referring to individual mission sizes or the overall time it will take to complete either. In a separate interview with 4Gamer (also translated by Dualshockers), Nomura also mentions that main story quests have been expanded upon too, giving characters more depth in the process.
