Call Of Duty: Warzone Revealed - Free-To-Play Battle Royale Game Launches Tomorrow

4 years 1 month ago

Following Black Ops 4's battle royale mode, Blackout, Activision is going much bigger in the battle royale space with a standalone free-to-play game called Call of Duty: Warzone that supports 150 players.

The game will be available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC beginning Tuesday, March 10. Activision is surprise-releasing it much like EA did with Apex Legends last year. It's not a complete surprise, however, as the opening cinematic for Modern Warfare Season 2 strongly hinted at a new battle royale mode, and numerous leaks have emerged in recent weeks. The latest was an actual gameplay video, which was soon after followed by the addition of an in-game countdown clock that pointed to a March 10 release.

But this is more than a mode for Modern Warfare; it's a free-to-play game that everyone can download. You don't need to have a copy of Modern Warfare to play it, but MW owners will be able to jump into it earlier than other players. Warzone will go live for MW owners at 8 AM PT, while everyone else will be able to download it starting at 12 PM PT.

2K Games Pulls Its Titles From Nvidia GeForce Now

4 years 1 month ago

Another company has removed its games from Nvidia's GeForce Now cloud gaming service. And this time, it was much more direct, as publisher 2K Games purposefully requested to have its titles pulled.

Nvidia community manager Cory Banks posted on the company's official forums that 2K Games has made the choice to remove its games from GeForce Now. Though a reason has not been provided, Banks said that Nvidia is working with 2K to "re-enable their games in the future."

2K's decision echoes that of other game publishers such as Activision Blizzard and Bethesda, which have also pulled its games from GeForce Now. While Bethesda's reasons remain just as hazy as 2K's, Nividia said Activision Blizzard's removal was a "misunderstanding." Hinterland Studio, the developer behind The Long Dark, also pulled the survival game from the service.

Ori And The Will Of The Wisps' Story Goes In "A Different Direction," Say Devs

4 years 1 month ago

Ori and the Blind Forest was a surprise hit for Moon Studios. The small, decentralized company put together a Metroidvania with heart, thanks in large part to writer Thomas Mahler and composer Gareth Coker. As the studio approaches its sophomore effort with Ori and the Will of the Wisps, the duo spoke with GameSpot about how they approached the sequel, which moments touched fans, and how they continued Ori's legacy.

Spoilers for Ori and the Blind Forest follow.

When you began working on the sequel, was the ending of the first game a natural jumping off point? How much consideration was there of how much of that to use versus doing something completely new?

Call of Duty: Warzone Gameplay Leaked Ahead Of Official Announcement

4 years 1 month ago

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is expected to get its own battle royale mode, called Warzone, after numerous leaks have pointed towards its existence. A new gameplay video for the mode, shared accidentally and since pulled, has confirmed many already leaked details. [Update: It now appears even more likely that Warzone's launch is imminent, as the Classified menu option in Modern Warfare has been replaced with a countdown ending on Tuesday morning. The official Call of Duty Twitter account has announced the upcoming mode.]

First and foremost, Warzone seems to be an entirely standalone product from Modern Warfare and will be free-to-play without requiring a purchase. Apex Legends' Fake Character Was Created Just To Mislead Dataminers

4 years 1 month ago

Before Revenant was introduced into Apex Legends in the game's latest season, many players were convinced Forge would be the newest addition. That was by design, as Respawn intentionally misled dataminers to avoid any early leaks of its latest character.

Dataminers often scrounge around in a game's files after updates, looking for changes and additions that hint at content to come. Resapwn design director Jason McCord knew this would be the case in the weeks before Revenant's release, spoiling the surprise he and his team had been crafting since the game's launch in February 2019. To avoid this, McCord created Forge--a means to introduce Revenant through in-game lore and misdirect dataminers.

"Honestly, it started as a fun way to misdirect dataminers who, at the time, felt like they had solved our next legend and had ruined our surprise," McCord said in an interview with Dotesports. "We actually purposefully leaked fake concept art and details of Forge's kit in patches, so there would be a bread crumb trail by the time we announced him. It's pretty insane, really. I can't think of any other game that has gone through such hijinks."

Command And Conquer Remastered Will Upscale The Iconic Original FMV Cutscenes

4 years 1 month ago

The team on EA's new Command & Conquer Remastered have been hard at work hunting down the original assets used in 1995, though some creativity is needed when files go missing.

EA has posted a new video with Producer Jim Vessella, chronicling his search for the original HD copies of Command & Conquer's iconic FMV cutscenes. The team decided that they had to use the original footage, as remaking the cutscenes would never be the same, but finding the files was a challenge.

While Vessella managed to track down archival tapes of the footage, it was only saved in a low quality VQA format. The only option left was to upscale the footage, using AI to improve resolution, increase frame rate, and improve the audio.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Midgar Is Designed To Make You Feel Bad About Your Actions

4 years 1 month ago

With the news that Final Fantasy VII Remake will take place exclusively in Midgar, it's not surprising that the city is going to be expanded and reworked. In the remake, the city will be a sprawling, living city--just to make you feel bad about blowing part of it up.

A new interview with producer Yoshinori Kitase and co-director Naoki Hamaguchi has revealed some of the thought that has gone into designing a larger, more complete Midgar.

In the original game, players only spent a few hours at the start of the game in Midgar, while the remake promises a full game's worth of content in the city.

Everspace 2 Early Access Pushed To Avoid Cyberpunk 2077 And Outriders

4 years 1 month ago

Indie game developers are having a tough time right now, with the postponement of GDC and other big events that, in a normal year, can provide a big boost to a game's marketing. It's even more challenging when you find out that your intended release date is close to that of big-name AAA games in the same genre, as Rockfish Games has.

An update on Everspace 2's Kickstarter has outlined the game's bad luck around timing, and given a little insight into how uncertainty around coronavirus has impacted their small studio. “It sounds like right out of a sci-fi horror movie: An aggressive virus is spreading around the globe, causing great uncertainties, severe supply chain issues and cancellations of big international events pretty much everywhere,” the studio said in the Kickstarter update.

“Unsurprisingly, all our GDC meetings with major platform holders and potential console co-publishing partners have been canceled, too. We are now setting up conference calls or meetings at upcoming events. Right now, we are prepared for everything and are hoping for the best. In short: We have to deal with a lot of uncertainties regarding business development, external game production as well as marketing and PR.“

Former PlayStation Boss Doesn't Miss The Console Wars

4 years 1 month ago

Former PlayStation executive Adam Boyes sounds as if he is happy for the "console wars" period of his life to be over. Boyes, who was vice president for third-party relations at PlayStation from 2012-2016, told USgamer that he loved what he did, who he worked with, and what he achieved during his run at Sony. But there was also a lot of stress.

"Sometimes I feel like I have an opinion, but it doesn't matter because I did that," Boyes said about the forthcoming launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X later this year, and all the pressure that comes with being an executive at a company launching a new system. "I put in my all. I loved it. Built an incredible team, had an incredible experience. [...] So you think that I would have a FOMO that I'm not part of it, but it really isn't. There was so much stress and I think the whole console battle concept, it takes you over. It's like, that's all you think about."

Boyes was an executive at PlayStation for the launch of the PlayStation 4 in 2013. The "console battle concept," as he calls it, is surely in reference to how PlayStation and Xbox are historically known to push very hard against each other as they try to position their own console as the one to buy. Boyes has a history in that kind of upfront strategy.

Fallout 76's Wastelanders Update Broke The Budget On Voice Actors

4 years 1 month ago

The Fallout 76 team has had a lot to do in the last year, working to flesh out a world once populated only by players and monsters. It may come as no surprise to find out that some of the game's upgrades came in over budget.

In an interview published by USgamer, Bethesda Vice President Pete Hines went into some detail about the process of developing Wastelanders, discussing both the project's goals and what went into achieving them.

With a world of new NPCs to be integrated into the game, Hines reveals that the designers went a little ham with adding dialogue that would then have to be delivered by voice actors. "They went much beyond what they were budgeted to do because designers can't help themselves. So they blew past their word count budgets," he said.

Mario Kart Tour Multiplayer Update Has Finally Arrived

4 years 1 month ago

Mario Kart Tour's long-awaited multiplayer update has finally arrived. This is right on schedule, as Nintendo previously announced that the multiplayer update was coming on March 8.

All you need to do is update Mario Kart Tour to unlock multiplayer, which allows you to finally race against other human opponents. For "Standard Races," the rulesets will change every day, which in theory should encourage people to come back each day to see what's new. Players can also invite specific players to custom races where they decide the rules as it relates to items, laps, etc.

Another variant is called "Gold Races," and these are locked behind a paywall. Players must buy the $5 USD/month Gold Pass to participate in these races, which include faster speeds at 200cc. The Gold Pass also comes with an allotment of in-game currency and badges.

You Can Finally Pet The Dog In The Division 2

The latest game to update with the highly sought after dog-petting feature is The Division 2, with the introduction of a cute pettable puppy in Warlords of New York's new hub space.

A number of high-profile games have added dog-petting mechanics in the last year, partially spurred by the popularity of Twitter profile Can You Pet The Dog.

In a moment of serendipity, The Division 2's original lack of dog-petting was one of the reasons this account was started. The core game is littered with sad-looking stray dogs, but the player's only option to interact with them is to shoot them (which, hopefully, no one has ever done).

After the success of the Resident Evil 2 remake, we're all looking forward to seeing what will be done with the next game in the series. This video gives a bit of insight into how 2020's gaming technology can make the game (but mainly Nemesis) feel so much bigger, badder and scarier.

Like its predecessor, the Resident Evil 3 remake isn't a shot-for-shot remake of the original game, but will include changes that will keep you on your toes.

Mortal Kombat 11: Watch Spawn Brutalize His Foes In The New DLC Trailer

4 years 1 month ago

During the livestream for Netherrealm's Final Kombat tournament, Ed Boon and actor Keith David took to the stage to reveal the first gameplay trailer for Spawn, the final character for Mortal Kombat 11's Kombat Pack. As another character based on a comic book series, Spawn's brutal combat style and demonic abilities make him a great fit Mortal Kombat 11's roster. As one of the more anticipated characters from fans to make their debut in the game, the latest fighter will be playable on March 17 in early access for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

In the new gameplay trailer, we see Spawn--voiced by returning actor Keith David from the short-lived HBO animated series--take on the various MK11 fighters with his unique brand of devious powers and tactics. Formerly a government assassin, Al Simmons met his death after a betrayal and was reborn as a hellspawn after making a deal with the devil, imbuing him with demonic powers and an organic suit that can summon tendril-like chains and a massive cape that can attack his enemies. In addition to his hellspawn powers, Spawn also has an arsenal of conventional weapons such as grenades and machine-guns, allowing him to mix up his attacks--seen in glorious detail during his Fatal Blow attack.

Just like in the comics, Spawn is a no-nonsense character who's straight to the point, and that's certainly reflected in his pre-match dialog with Scorpion, a similar revenant from the underworld. During the livestream, Ed Boon stated that the developers at Netherrealm have wanted to bring Spawn into Mortal Kombat for quite some time.

One Of The Rarest Video Game Consoles Ever Sells For A Record-Breaking Price At Auction

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Is Not Awarding XP Right Now, And Fans Are Upset

4 years 1 month ago

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is currently facing what sounds like a pretty big issue. In some cases, the game is not awarding XP after matches, which is pretty much the whole reason to play.

The issue was first acknowledged by Infinity Ward's Twitter account earlier in the day on March 8, and then the studio said hours later that it's still investigating the issue. "We'll keep you updated and thank you again for your patience," Infinity Ward said. So far, however, there is no timeline for when the fix will be available, or details on what was causing the problem in the first place.

A quick Twitter search for "modern warfare XP" shows that a lot of people are experiencing this issue, so hopefully it gets resolved quickly and that XP can be retroactively restored.

Borderlands 3 Steam Pre-Loading, Cross-Play, Release Time, And More Detailed

4 years 1 month ago

We're only a week away from Borderlands 3's Steam launch, and as developer Gearbox gets ready to welcome a new crop of PC players, the studio has released an FAQ that breaks down everything you can expect from the looter-shooter's Steam release on March 13. We've compiled it all down below.

Borderlands 3 was originally an Epic Games Store exclusive when it launched in September 2019. Despite this exclusivity deal (that lasted almost six months), Gearbox's looter-shooter was rather successful on Epic, with the number of peak concurrent players doubling the all-time top concurrent player record set by Borderlands 2. And across all platforms, Borderlands 3 became 2K Games' fastest-selling title ever.

Gearbox is preparing to launch Borderlands 3's second major campaign add-on Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock, which arrives on March 26. While announcing this piece of DLC, the studio also teased the looter-shooter's third expansion that will feature outlaws and dinosaurs. Both expansions are part of Borderlands 3's Season Pass, which retails for $50.

Mortal Kombat 11 Is Free To Play On PS4 And Xbox One This Weekend

4 years 1 month ago

Mortal Kombat 11 was a fantastic conclusion to the modern trilogy's story, but it's also an incredible fighting game with a robust online community, and this weekend, you'll be able to join them free of charge. Mortal Kombat 11 is free to play on PS4 and Xbox One from now until Monday, March 9. The best and most surprising part is that the free trial includes the latest DLC character, The Joker--normally, games don't offer extra content during free periods.

If you're interested in keeping Mortal Kombat 11 and playing past the weekend, then you're in luck. Publisher Warner Bros. Interactive has discounted all versions of the game and the Kombat Pack, which comes with every DLC character announced so far--this includes Terminator T-800, The Joker, and the upcoming Spawn. You can grab the base game on either platform for $42, the Kombat Pack for $28, or the Premium Edition for $63. If you're subscribed to PlayStation Plus, Xbox Live Gold, or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, then you'll receive an even greater discount. Thankfully, the Steam version is discounted as well.

On top of that, Plus, Gold, or Game Pass Ultimate will give you access to Mortal Kombat 11's online multiplayer portion. Being a fighting game, a large amount of the appeal is playing online against other players, but Mortal Kombat 11 puts a large focus on staying connected to the internet due to its loot system. Thankfully, without a subscription, you can still get loot as well as access the Krypt, AI battles, and most of the Towers of Time--there are specific co-operative towers you won't be able to participate in.

Black Mesa, The Ambitious Fan Remake Of Half-Life, Has Finally Hit Version 1.0; Full Patch Notes Included

4 years 1 month ago

Black Mesa, the fan-made remake of the original Half-Life, has finally hit version 1.0 after 16 years in the making. A slight delay halted its exit from Steam Early Access by 24 hours, but the long-time labor of love from developer Crowbar Collective has now officially released.

It's been a long time coming, too, with the entire project originating as a mod for Half-Life 2 back in 2004. Black Mesa was initially scheduled for a late 2009 release, but that was eventually pushed back until 2012 when a standalone version of the game launched as a free download. This version included recreations of every chapter in Half-Life with the exception of the final chapter set on the alien world of Xen. Gordon Freeman's excursion to Xen was widely considered the weakest part of the original Half-Life, so Crowbar Collective intended to rework the final chapter for a later release.

It seems you're not alone either. Modern Warfare's official reddit is teeming with questions about the tomogunchi, so much so that a developer from Infinity Ward has broken down exactly how to care for the pet on your wrist.

Firstly, you want to make sure that you have both the Watch Interact and Check Watch gestures equipped, so that you can use the former to activate bonuses and the latter to see the status of your tomogunchi at all times. The bonus bar beneath the pixelated pet is directly tied to actions based on its current evolution, and you can bank what you've accumulated at any time to speed up your tomogunchi's evolution.

4 years 1 month ago

March is a busy month for Pokemon Go, with a variety of different events on the way over the next few weeks, including the kickoff of the Go Battle League's inaugural season. Two of this month's events are now live, both of which will run through Monday, March 9.

During the event, there will be a surge in Team Rocket activity on Saturday, March 7, from 2-5 PM local time. During that window, more Poke Stops will be under the control of Team Rocket grunts. Resident Evil 3 Remake Won't Let Nemesis Break Into Safe Rooms After All

4 years 1 month ago

Update: Capcom has issued a clarification to GamesRadar stating that RE3 Remake will in fact have safe rooms, and clarifying an earlier report. Nemesis did break into a room with a progress-saving typewriter, but not all save points are safe rooms. A designated safe room will be identifiable by musical cues. The original story follows.

Since its inception, there's one aspect of Resident Evil that has never changed: safe rooms. They're a reprieve from the dangers on the other side of their entrances, but in Resident Evil 3 Remake you won't have a space for a breath.

In the latest issue of the Official Xbox Magazine, it's been confirmed that Nemesis will be the first enemy in Resident Evil history that can follow you into safe rooms, giving you no chance to heal up or save your game in peace. This is in addition to the persistent foe being far more nimble and deadly than Mr. X in Resident Evil 2, making it a far more imposing threat on the streets of Raccoon City.

4 years 1 month ago

We're just one week away from the PS4 release of Nioh 2, the sequel to Team Ninja's engrossing 2017 action-RPG. If you haven't played the original yet, PC players can pick up Nioh's Complete Edition for 70% off at Steam until March 9, dropping the price from $50 to $15. The Complete Edition comes with Nioh's three story expansions: Dragon of the North, Defiant Honor, and Bloodshed's End. Each expansion contains new story campaigns and opens up previously unexplored regions in Japan circa 1600, adding hours of new content to an adventure that already clocks in north of 50 hours. PC players also get the exclusive Dharmachakra Kabuto helmet to wear in-game. The Complete Edition isn't on sale on PS4, but you grab the base game for $14.88 at Amazon (was $20).

For those unfamiliar with the surprise 2017 hit, Nioh is likely to appeal to fans of Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but it's far more than a From Software imitation. Nioh's fast-paced, brutal combat is a thrill whether you're fighting enemy factions or the supernatural Yokai monsters. With a wealth of customization options, Nioh never grows stale despite its length.
