Iron Man PSVR Bundle Announced With Everything You Need To Play

3 years 11 months ago

One of Marvel's biggest heroes is coming to PlayStation VR this summer. After a few release date delays, Iron Man VR will finally launch for PSVR on July 3, and if you're thinking about buying the virtual reality system just to play the game, you've now got a great option for doing so. Sony announced a brand-new Iron Man PSVR bundle will release alongside the game in July, and it includes the game itself along with everything you need to play. It's available to pre-order starting today in the US, Canada, and many South American countries for $350 USD / $450 CAD. As of right now, we're only seeing it available at PlayStation Direct, but we expect more retailers will post listings soon.

The PlayStation VR Iron Man bundle includes the VR headset, a PlayStation Camera, two PlayStation Move motion controllers, the Iron Man VR game on a Blu-ray disc, and a PSVR demo disc. It's notable that this bundle includes the two PSVR motion controllers (normally $100 a pair), as those don't come with every bundle, and they're required to play Iron Man VR. They also happen to be sold out everywhere right now, making this bundle a hot commodity if you plan to get the game. Because of that, we expect the Iron Man PSVR bundle won't stay in stock for very long, so you'll want to get in your pre-order today if you're looking to buy at list price.

Ghost Of Tsushima Head Says Swords Should Be Lethal, Or "It's A Nerf Tube"

3 years 11 months ago

Ghost of Tsushima is coming very soon, and Sony finally gave us a lengthy look at gameplay with the latest State of Play presentation. That included a detailed section on combat, and in an interview with GameSpot Sucker Punch creative director Nate Fox explained how the studio is aiming to make swordplay feel authentic.

In the demonstration, we saw both stealthy, distraction-based gameplay and more direct combat, as the hero Jin took down a half-dozen Mongols with a few strokes of his katana. Instant-kill animations are common for stealth games, but quickly dispatching enemies in open combat looked much different. Fox explained why that was important.

"One of the things that we strive for really, really diligently is to keep swords lethal," he said. "To feel like those samurai movie battles, enemies have to die with a few strokes of a katana, otherwise it's not a katana, it's a Nerf tube. That means that when they hit you with swords, you also are going to die in a few strikes. It's very challenging."

Detroit: Become Human Is Getting A Twitch Extension

3 years 11 months ago

French studio Quantic Dream is giving fans a new way to experience its latest release, Detroit: Become Human, with a Twitch extension aimed at streamers. The Detroit: Community Play extension will let streamers easily send out polls to their viewers related to the decisions posed by the game's branching narrative--something Detroit streamers have done in a more informal way since the game's release.

Like other Quantic Dream games, Detroit: Become Human is a narrative-heavy game where the outcome of different situations is influenced by the decisions the player chooses, or the relationships they build with characters. The new extension is designed to simulate a multiplayer experience, letting viewers have a say in the direction the playthrough will go.

The feature will be demoed by Bryan Dechart and his partner Amelia Rose Blair. Both actors appeared in Detroit: Become Human, and later gathered a large following on Twitch when they streamed their first playthrough of the game they worked on. The duo are now Twitch Partners under their channel Dechart Games.

Command & Conquer Remastered Announces Support For Modding

3 years 11 months ago

The team behind the upcoming Command & Conquer Remastered Collection has previously spoken about working with community modders to update the classic RTS games, but a new announcement details how they're planning on giving back to that community. Not only will the Remastered Collection launch with a new Map Editor, EA will also be releasing the games' source code under a GPL version 3.0 license.

"We believe this will be one of the first major RTS franchises to open source their source code under the GPL," a new blog post about the project reads. "This initiative is the direct result of a collaboration between some of the community council members and our teams at EA. After discussing with the council members, we made the decision to go with the GPL license to ensure compatibility with projects like CnCNet and Open RA."

The release of TiberianDawn.dll and RedAlert.dll will allow keen modders to change everything from art assets and game logic to custom units and maps. For those who don't want to dive all the way into the source code, there will also be a Map Editor tool, and Steam Workshop support to enable modders to share their custom maps and mods.

Dragon Ball FighterZ Is Handing Out Free In-Game Money To Celebrate 5 Million Sales

3 years 11 months ago

Dragon Ball FighterZ has been a huge success for developer Arc System Works, and it's just been announced on the game's official site (in Japanese) that the game has achieved 5 million lifetime sales between shipped copies and digital purchases. To celebrate, everyone who logs into the game within the next week will score some free stuff.

From now until May 28, players who jump into the game will be awarded a massive 5 million Zeni, along with three lobby characters: Android 21 SPECIAL 01, Goku (SSGSS) SPECIAL 01, and Vegeta (SSGSS) SPECIAL 01. You'll be able to walk around the menus with any of these avatars.

Incidentally, two of the game's unlockable characters--the Super Saiyan Blue variants of Goku and Vegeta--can be unlocked by earning zeni, and 5 million is comfortably enough to unlock both of them. I can verify that I loaded up the game without these characters unlocked, and once I connected to an online lobby, I was immediately granted both fighters, alongside two trophies.

CD Projekt Overtakes Ubisoft To Become Europe's Most Valuable Game Company

3 years 11 months ago

After being valued at $8.13 billion, Polish company CD Projekt have overtaken France's Ubisoft to become the most valuable game company in Europe, Video Games Chronicle reports. While the company's gaming branch, CD Projeckt Red, has only three titles under its belt (not including a handful of spin-off Witcher titles), CD Projekt also runs the GOG distribution platform. This year, a resurgence of interest in The Witcher spurred by the Netflix show, as well as hype for the studio's upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077, have helped push the company's value even higher.

While the numbers are still relatively small compared to gaming behemoths in North America and Japan, with Nintendo valued at $53.73 billion and Activision Blizzard at $56.27 billion, it's still an impressive result for the Witcher developers.

After a number of delays, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 is on track for its planned September release date, despite the studio's switch to remote working due to the COVID-19 crisis. CDPR has also confirmed it will be returning to the Witcher universe in the future, though its current focus is entirely on Cyberpunk 2077.

Nintendo Says Its Developers Face "Big Limitations" Working From Home

3 years 11 months ago

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, developers around the world are working from home to stay safe and healthy. Working on video games at home isn't proving to be the easiest, however.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in Nintendo's latest earnings briefing that its developers, and its partner studios, are facing "big limitations" working from home. As such, the company expects this to result in a "large impact" on the business.

"Since there are indeed big limitations on what can be done from home, we do think this will have a large impact," Furukawa said. "Nintendo has development partners and development offices not just in Japan, but all over the world. The first locations to be affected were the offices in Europe and America, where working from home started early. Then our offices in Japan also switched to working from home. In the case of Japan, this had a major impact on development because we did not already have a remote development environment in place."

Tony Hawk Says People Called Him A Sellout After Launching His Video Game Series With Activision

3 years 11 months ago

Tony Hawk's life changed after he started working with Activision on the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series. Already a big name in the world of skateboarding, partnering with Activision on the skateboarding video game franchise bearing his name elevated him to a household name. Along with this success, Hawk faced scrutiny from those in skating circles--he was labeled a "sellout."

Hawk recalled these early days in an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast recently. With the success of the game series, Hawk also got a suite of endorsement deals from gigantic companies such as McDonald's and Jeep. This only fueled his critics.

"In those days, skating was very much a novelty. In the '90s, X-Games came into play, and then all of a sudden my name was well-known, not mainstream, but getting there. Then our video game came out, and it was just like, 'Oh, you're just a sellout,'" Hawk said. "Because of the video game and the endorsements that followed from that. I was doing stuff for Jeep, for McDonald's, for Doritos, and they were like, 'Oh, you're just a sellout.'"

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Game - Film Director Edgar Wright Wants It Back

3 years 11 months ago

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - The Game, Ubisoft's scrolling 2010 beat-em-up based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit comic (and Edgar Wright's movie adaptation), hasn't been available for some time. The game was delisted at the end of 2014, likely due to the expiration of one of Ubisoft's licenses, and it has remained impossible to buy since.

Now, during a watch party for Wright's film that O'Malley joined Twitter to take part in, the book's author tweeted out a request to "bring back the Scott Pilgrim game". The official Ubisoft account--which was not tagged in the tweet--issued a simple, cryptic response of an emoji scratching its chin.

Of course, this is not a confirmation that the game is coming back. But at the same time, the game has a bit of a cult following, and to raise people's hopes like this would be cruel.

The Last Of Us: Part 2 Won't Let You Fully Upgrade Ellie In One Playthrough

3 years 11 months ago

The Last of Us: Part II is finally nearly upon us, and as new details emerge we're getting a better idea of how the long-awaited sequel will play. One new thing we've learned, thanks to the new Inside the Gameplay video below, is that you won't be able to fully upgrade Ellie in a single playthrough.

Kurt Margenau, the game's co-director, explains in the video (at around the 7:30 mark onwards) that The Last of Us: Part II will feature seperate weapon and player upgrade systems, but that you won't be able to acquire the necessary resources to fully upgrade Ellie in a single playthrough. This is because the game is focused on the consequences of your choices, and that includes which skills you decide to focus on.

Naughty Dog wants players to make choices and then be forced to live with them, and to that end even the upgrade system choiced needed to have "a really noticable and tangible impact" on how you play. So if you decide to bulk up one of Ellie's abilities, it might mean you can never fully develop another, for instance.

G2A Pays Developer $39,600 For Stolen Game Keys

3 years 11 months ago

In July 2019, online games retailer G2A extended an offer to devs to open up its records to an independent auditor, and to reimburse the developers 10 times the value of any game keys that were found to have been illegally sold. So far only one developer, Wube Games, has taken them up on the offer, and G2A has finalized a figure of $39,600 as compensation for stolen Factorio keys.

While G2A initially promised to involve an independent auditor in the process, their most recent blog post on the subject says they found that "none that would meet our agreed requirements." Wube then agreed to G2A carrying out its own internal investigation.

The developers provided G2A with a list of 321 keys it believed had been illegally sold, and G2A concluded that 198 of those had been sold on its platforms. G2A has agreed to pay Wube Software a total of $39,600 for the keys, 10 times their full retail price. The company confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that they have received the payment in full from G2A.

Free Battlefield 5 Currency Now Available To Make Up For Recent Issues

3 years 11 months ago

DICE is giving away free currency in Battlefield V to make up for recent issues. The studio announced on Twitter that everyone is getting an allotment of 200 Battlefield Currency (BFC) as a thank you to fans for their patience for recent issues regarding the game's weekly mission.

The BFC is automatically applied to your account, so you don't need to do anything at all to claim it. The problem was related to not being able to unlock the latest weekly reward, and the following week's challenge should go forward without issue.

Battlefield V's latest big update was version 6.6, which rebalanced many of the game's vehicles and made further changes to weaponry. The update also tweaks the layout of several of the game's maps, particularly Wake Island, and adds body dressings for vehicles, as well as fixing many small bugs and issues. You can read the full 6.6 patch notes here.

New Saints Row And Dead Island 2 Are Not Planned Until After March 2021

3 years 11 months ago

Embracer Group, the parent company that owns the rights to franchises such as Dead Island, Saints Row, Darksiders, and Timesplitters, has announced their financial records for the 2019-2020 financial year, alongside a few tidbits of information about what to expect in the future. The studios working under the company have 118 titles in development, 69 of which have not been announced yet--and some of the most anticipated titles will not release until after March 2021.

"Looking into the next financial year ending March 31 2022, we expect continued organic growth driven by further increase in the value of completed games including the first AAA games releases since Metro Exodus," the report reads. "From this year on we expect to have AAA releases every year."

This likely means that the new Saints Row in development will not launch until after this date. Dead Island 2 is also unlikely, despite having been in development (across multiple studios) since at least 2014--as a new open-world title, it's likely to be considered AAA. The zombie sequel is currently in the works at Dambuster Studios (Homefront: The Revolution).

System Shock 3 Is Moving Forward With Tencent's Involvement

System Shock 3, which was announced back in 2015, but has faced a rocky road since then, and for a while the game's future was unclear. While Otherside Entertainment has been working on the game for some time, and brought on System Shock lead designer Warren Spector to help craft the sequel, reports of layoffs within the studio painted a worrying picture. Now, however, it's clear that System Shock 3 will be moving forward, but with a new studio involved.

On Twitter, OtherSide Entertainment has announced that Tencent--the Chinese holding company with several major investments in multiple game developers and publishers--is coming on board to assist. Tencent will "be taking the System Shock franchise forward", according to the developer--although what this means, exactly, is unclear. A follow-up tweet suggests that the company will be assisting the development team, which has struggled with the game's scale.

Last Of Us 2 Dev Warns You'll Miss Entire Story Moments On First Playthrough

3 years 11 months ago

The Last of Us: Part II will feature level designs that are even more open than in the first game, and due to this, there could be "entire story moments" and scripted sequences you might miss. Co-game director Anthony Newman revealed this in the newest Inside the Gameplay video for The Last of Us: Part II.

"In this game we've gone so far in making the level design open that there are actually entire story moments, entire combat encounters, full scripted sequences that you may completely miss," Newman said. "And there are things that we feel like, even though a portion of our player base may never see these things, the fact that when you do encounter them, you feel like you discovered them, it lends them this charm and this magic, 'I think is unique to games that this happened to me, because of what I did and the place I explored to.'"

Elsewhere in the video, writer/director Neil Druckmann said The Last of Us: Part II aims to heighten the feeling of being a survivor. You play as Ellie in the sequel, and she is smaller and more nimble than Joel, the protagonist of the first game. Ellie may not always be the strongest person in the room, but she is capable of fighting bigger, stronger enemies thanks to her unique skills and quickness.

Here's How Much Money Take-Two Makes From Microtransactions And Which Games Are The Biggest

Take-Two Has 93 Games In Development, But Company Won't Comment On GTA

3 years 11 months ago

Take-Two Interactive, the owner of Rockstar Games and 2K Games, confirmed on an earnings call that it has a whopping 93 titles in development, but the company won't say if a new version of Grand Theft Auto V is among them.

During the earnings call, Take-Two president Karl Slatoff said the 93 games are scheduled to launch by the end of March 2025. However, they might not all release. The 93 games represent what Take-Two has in the works right now, but Slatoff cautioned that, "It is likely that some of these titles will not be developed through completion and we will undoubtedly be adding new titles to our slate."

During a Q&A, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was asked if a new version of Grand Theft Auto V (presumably for next-gen consoles) would be one of the 93 titles planned for release by the end of 2025. The executive declined to comment, but the company did confirm that the 93 titles will come from all of Take-Two's divisions, including Rockstar.

Doom Eternal's Controversial Anti-Cheat Is Being Removed

3 years 11 months ago

After a deluge of complaints and comments from Doom Eternal players, Id Software is planning to remove the recently implemented Denuvo Anti-Cheat in the game's next update.

Doom Eternal executive producer Marty Stratton broke down the decision in a post to the Doom subreddit on Wednesday, saying that "feedback from players has made it clear that we must re-evaluate our approach to anti-cheat integration."

Id Software's first update for Doom Eternal brought a number of changes, including Denuvo Anti-Cheat, which uses a kernel-mode driver that can access your operating system. While patch notes tried to quell player concerns, the community was not happy with Id Software's decision to add what they consider an invasive anti-cheat tool. Player reactions since the update have been severe, including many negative reviews on Steam.

Amazon's Crucible Is Available Now

3 years 11 months ago

Amazon is making its first major push into AAA games began today with the release of the hero shooter Crucible. The free-to-play game is available through Amazon for PC or via Steam.

Crucible is a third-person hero shooter, so it has some elements similar to others in the genre. It adds a PvE element to the mix, though, spawning beasts to defeat throughout the world that help you rank up your team for when they run into other human players. It has 10 characters, each with their own variety of abilities. The characters largely don't fall into familiar archtypes like tank or support. Instead, their abilities let them plug into multiple functions in the heat of battle. Instead of ammo drops, each character has their own weapons and abilities with cooldown timers. You can also use the environment to set traps.

It's launching with three game modes: the capture point Harvester Command, team doubles Alpha Hunters, and PvE-focused Heart of Hives. While it has some elements of battle royale like care packages and a tightening play area "ring," it's not a typical battle royale. However, it does include a battle pass to unlock cosmetic rewards.

Kerbal Space Program 2 has been pushed to fall of 2021, past its previous target of releasing by March 2021. Take-Two Interactive announced the delay in an earnings statement, chalking it up to complications from the coronavirus. It said this will give the development team the time it needs to create the "best experience possible."

The dev team itself also chimed in on Twitter with a statement.

"As you all know, we've been working hard to make this the best and most authentic KSP sequel possible," the statement reads. "This is an ambitious goal. We're making a big, expansive game loaded with new features, but doing so will take longer than we previously anticipated. With everything going on today due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we're facing many unique challenges that require more time to safely iterate, create, test, and make KSP2 as great as it can be."

With Xbox Series X, Microsoft Is Selling A Console You May Never Buy (And That's Still Good News For Xbox)

3 years 11 months ago

One of the key pillars of Microsoft's next-generation strategy is Xbox Game Pass, and it could be a game-changer for the Xbox Series X and Microsoft's overall ambition for the future of gaming long-term. Xbox Game Pass is so much more than a catalog of games you can play--it's also the foundation for where Microsoft believes gaming is headed in the future. And with the launch of Xbox Series X this holiday season, Microsoft has a chance to start this next generation on a much stronger footing than the current one and better set itself apart from its competitors.

Microsoft's bold new vision for the future of gaming is rooted in its past. Microsoft came up short against Sony in terms of current-generation console sales. Some estimates state that the PS4 outsold the Xbox One by a 2:1 margin. There are plenty of reasons for that, including Microsoft's hubris around the launch. After a strong Xbox 360 era, Microsoft announced policies around the new Xbox One that fans immediately and loudly rejected, including internet check-ins, a lack of used game support, and bundling Kinect with every system. The console retailed for $500 USD at launch, a full $100 above the price of the PlayStation 4.

In an interview just ahead of launch, I remember asking then-executive Albert Penello about the price gap, and he shrugged his shoulders, appearing confident that it would not make a difference. But it did. Even if some of these digital-centric policies might now be considered by some to be forward-thinking, 2013 was clearly not the time for those ideas to thrive. The Xbox One could never fully recover from its initial launch struggles, but things are different now, and Microsoft is putting itself in a very strong position as it heads into the Xbox Series X era and beyond.

Cicadas Are Back After 17 Years, But Won't Be In Animal Crossing Until July

3 years 11 months ago

If you've played any of the Animal Crossing games before New Horizons, then you're no stranger to the mystical buzzing of the cicada. The loud summer bugs are a staple of the franchise and are finally returning to the real world after 17 years of underground development. They'll start to cover trees across Eastern North America and elsewhere in the coming weeks.

While real-world cicada's will start emerging throughout May, we won't see them in Animal Crossing until the first day of July when the Brown, Giant, and Robust Cicadas start sucking the fluid from every tree between town hall and the museum. Cicadas show up during the summer in the Northern Hemisphere and next year in early January for people playing in the Southern Hemisphere. You can find complete details about how to catch every type of cicada in our bug catching guide.

There isn't a 13 or 17 year cycle with the insects within Animal Crossing, but there has been an eight-year gap between Animal Crossing: New Leaf and New Horizons.

New Overwatch Patch Notes: Anniversary Skins, New Chat Wheel

3 years 11 months ago

Overwatch turns four years old this Sunday, May 24, and Blizzard is releasing some new content to celebrate. As part of the game's latest update, Patch 1.48, Blizzard has introduced some new skins and anniversary challenges, including Carbon Fiber Sigma and Masked Man McCree. During this event, players can unlock items from past events with credits, or by opening lootboxes.

Among these festivities, the patch introduces a few changes to the game. Chief among these is a complete overhaul to the communications wheel. Players can now customize the location of key commands and call-outs. Blizzard has also removed the limit that previously prevented players from using multiple commands in a short timeframe, although spamming commands will cause delays. The patch also marks the start of Season 3 of the game's competitive deathmatch.

Overwatch's previous big patch added a new hero to the game, the robotic Echo, who can duplicate the abilities of any hero in her sight. Game director Jeff Kaplan indicated that Echo will be the last character added to Overwatch until the game's sequel is released. Though Overwatch 2 is confirmed for current platforms--including Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Xbox One--there's no word on a release date yet. The first new hero for Overwatch 2, Sojourn, was revealed back in November 2019.

Animal Crossing: Here's The Odds Of Redd Totally Screwing You Over

3 years 11 months ago

We already knew that Jolly Redd, the shady art dealer in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, is an unscrupulous fellow. He shows up on a rickety boat, invites you into a dimly lit room, and sells artwork that is often fake and sometimes even haunted. But new details from datamining appears to show the odds of getting legit art pieces for your collection, and it reveals Redd is quite the scammer.

According to Twitter user Ninji, the four art pieces have a rolling chance of the real-to-fake distribution. There's a 50% chance that only one will be real, and a 30% chance that you'll have two real and fakes. Your best odds of getting a good distribution is 10%, which gives you three real and only one fake. But that chance is matched by having all four fake and no real art at all. That means Redd could give you absolutely no chance of choosing a real piece, but no counter-balance of having no chance for a fake.

The thread shares some other details as well. If a spot is marked for real art, 20% of the time the game will guarantee it's a piece you haven't already donated to the museum. That helps raise the odds slightly of getting new pieces to help you fill Blathers' collection. It also details how the spots are devoted to different types of artwork. The art appears four spots (designated 1, 2, 3, and 4 in the datamine). Spots 1 and 2 can have paintings, while 3 and 4 can have paintings or sculptures. Spots 2 and 3 will always be small, while 1 and 4 can be any size.

The Last Of Us 2 "Inside The Gameplay" Trailer Explains How Systems Inform Story

3 years 11 months ago

The Last of Us 2 is fast approaching, and Naughty Dog is continuing to promote its blockbuster with new trailers explaining the story and gameplay systems. The latest trailer, titled Inside the Gameplay, is all about how the game systems themselves help build the world and story.

The eight-minute video goes over some of the gameplay elements you can expect, from dodging or running away to crafting. But true to form for the narrative-driven game, Naughty Dog explains many of these in the context of how they impact or reflect the story and characters. Dodging or running away is a choice you make for gameplay reasons, but it also shows how dangerous the world is. Crafting is a reward for exploring thoroughly. And the brutal violence Ellie has to use to defend herself should be hard to stomach, because it's hard for her.

The trailer also explains that some parts of the world, including entire scripted sequences, are entirely missable. The studio explained that the presence of these sequences helps make the world feel responsive to you and gives you ownership over the story.
