The PlayStation 5 will offer what Sony is calling an "evolution" for sound. This is according to the slides from Sony's latest corporate strategy meeting, which outline many of the company's plans for the upcoming next-generation console.

One slide of their presentation outlines how the PlayStation 5 will open up new sound possibilities thanks to the new processing unit it contains. "By installing a customized 3D audio processing unit in PS5, we have made it possible to deliver diverse and sophisticated 3D audio experiences," the slide reads. "Players can experience sound that moves in from front to behind, above to below, and all around them."

According to the report, combining these new sound possibilities with other features like the speed of an SSD and haptic feedback controllers, the PlayStation 5 will offer "experiences that were not possible before."

Hunt: Showdown Has Added Console Cross-Play With Update 1.3, But Not For Friends

3 years 11 months ago

Hunt: Showdown has received a major update for its PS4 and Xbox One versions, and it has brought cross-play to the online shooter. Players can now team up--or fight against--players who own the game on another system.

There's a catch, though--right now, you can still only send invites to players on the same console as you, so cross-play between friends isn't possible to organize just yet.

Update 1.3 has been detailed on Reddit, which explains that when searching for random partners, you can get matched with players from either console. While the game is also available on PC, this update is console-only.

Plenty of other new features have been added with this update too, including the new Grunt Doctor and Concertina Armored AI enemies, a new time of day (sunset), and some new equipment, including the Martini-Henry IC1 Marksman and the Decoy Fuses tool.

As part of a recent investor presentation, Sony announced that PS Plus added 2.7 million subscribers in the latest quarter to reach 41.5 million in total as of March 31.

Sony said it will be important for the company to "expand this increased engagement going forward" as it heads into the PlayStation 5 generation. The company also saw an uptick in PlayStation Now subscribers, which reached 2.2 million for the end of April 2020.

Both PS Plus and PS Now benefitted from how people are spending more time at home during the global COVID-19 pandemic. "At a time when people are voluntarily not going outside, demand for digital entertainment such as games is increasing globally. In this environment, PlayStation users have increased significantly," Sony said.

The Last Of Us Part 2 Now Has An Official Twitter Emoji

Lawbreakers Director Thinks That Putting The Game On PS4 Instead Of Xbox One Was A Mistake

3 years 11 months ago

Cliff Bleszinski is best known for his work at Epic Games, but in a series of recent tweets he's reflected on another recent game of his that did not do so well. Lawbreakers scored good reviews (GameSpot gave it an 8/10) but failed to attract the player base that a hero-based shooter needs to survive, and Bleszinski believes that one of the issues was that the game was on PS4 instead of Xbox.

He says that releasing the game on Sony's system instead of Microsoft's was "a mistake", as you can see below.

In a follow-up tweet, Bleszinski suggests that fans of Gears of War, his previous series, and would perhaps be more likely to play his next game. He also said that the decision was based on the PlayStation 4 having a larger install base, and limited resources meant that they could not release the game for both systems at launch. Lawbreakers was also available on PC, but can no longer be purchased or played.

See Gears Of War 3 Running On PS3 In Leaked Video

3 years 11 months ago

The Gears of War franchise is synonymous with Xbox. Even before Microsoft acquired the franchise, the series was exclusive to Xbox. The game began as a console exclusive to Xbox and has remained that way ever since. So it was an interesting piece of news recently when footage of 2011's Gears of War 3 running on PlayStation 3 was published online.

Epic Games has now confirmed that the studio never had any plans to release Gears of War 3 on Sony's console. The footage is derived from tests that Epic conducted for Unreal Engine 3.

"This footage is a byproduct of Epic's internal Unreal Engine 3 testing process, which utilized both Gears and Unreal Tournament, and was never part of any actual product work for PS3," Epic told Kotaku.

Apex Legends Season 5's First Hunt Is Live--Unlocks More Story Details

3 years 11 months ago

The first Hunt for Apex Legends Season 5: Fortune Favor is now live. Called The First Piece, the Hunt can only be accessed if you have five treasure packs or party up with someone who does. However, you'll need the five packs in order to get the rewards for completing the Hunt--no exceptions.

The First Piece is a relatively short and simple PvE mission. You shouldn't have much trouble completing it solo, though you will have a much easier time with allies. You can access it via the Quests tab in the Season Hub. Taking place on Kings Canyon After Dark, The First Piece will see you complete a simple fetch quest in Artillery.

You'll go up against prowlers and what we're going to affectionately nickname nightmare prowlers. The former are what you face in certain campaign missions in Titanfall 2 and Bloodhound's Trials on Apex Legends' World's Edge map. However, we've never seen nightmare prowlers prior to The First Piece. They're prowlers that seem to be corrupted by Revenant's Death Totem, so they die quickly but they respawn just as quickly and can easily swarm you.

Destiny 2 Patch Notes For Update 2.8.1.2

3 years 11 months ago

Destiny 2's servers are back online after Bungie rolled out a new update to squash some bugs that have plagued the Season of the Worthy. Unfortunately, that patch didn't fix the bug that has broken Destiny 2's latest story quest, The Lie--Bungie is still working on that one.

Hotfix 2.8.1.2 was planned before Bungie released The Lie and players discovered the bug that breaks its final mission, "The Tyrant," over the weekend. The new patch fixes some issues related to Warmind Cells and some Exotics that have allowed players to quickly annihilate some of the toughest bosses in the game.

Those Exotics are Wormgod's Caress for Titans and Winter's Guile for Warlocks. A bug in both has allowed players to extend their specific buffs far longer than intended. That allows players to build up massive damage against enemies like raid bosses and knock them out with ease. Bungie had disabled both Exotics previously until the bug could be identified and fixed, but this isn't the developer's first attempt. The same issue was present last season, and Bungie issued a hotfix then that wasn't quite enough to defeat the bug once and for all.

Epic Games Store Now Lets You Self-Refund Games You've Bought

3 years 11 months ago

Epic Games has updated its refund policy for all EGS purchases. Now, you will be able to return any Epic Games Store title within 14 days of purchase so long as you have no more than two hours played.

In order to initiate the new self-refund, you must sign-in to your account and select the "Account" dropdown option. From there, click on the "Transactions" tab and choose the game you want to return. If the title you are returning meets Epic Games' refund requirements, you will then see a "Refund" option next to it. Click that and you will begin the self-service refund.

There are a few stipulations to this policy, however. In addition to the above requirements--the 14-day ownership and no more than two hours played--you must not have been banned in the game or have violated any other Terms of Service. And, of course, all refunds are up to the discretion of Epic Games itself. This means if Epic determines you are abusing the refund policy, you will not be able to complete the transaction. All refunds will be issued back to the method of payment, meaning timing on when refunds will be received are dependent upon how you paid for the game.

Amnesia: Rebirth Offers A "Different Kind Of Horror" Than The Dark Descent

3 years 11 months ago

Amnesia: Rebirth is releasing into a very different world than its predecessor, 2010's Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Developer Frictional Games' first Amnesia--and, to an extent, The Chinese Room's indirect sequel, 2013's Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs--is the most noteworthy precursor (and perhaps even inspiration for) the streaming trend that saw content creators visually reacting to survival horror games in exaggerated ways. This trend popularized first-person, jump scare-focused horror games, such as Outlast, Five Nights At Freddy's, and the playable teaser for Silent Hills.

However, this is not the legacy that Frictional Games wanted--the studio hoped mainstream audiences would gain a more introspective interpretation from The Dark Descent, and that they'd see a game that's deeper than just a scary experience to react to. Conveying a deeper horror experience is something the team is now attempting to do with Amnesia: Rebirth, relying on the lessons they learned from developing 2015's SOMA. The new Amnesia will take place in a brand-new setting for the franchise and explore a different kind of horror.

Ghost Of Tsushima Won't Force You To Choose Between A Samurai Or A Ghost

3 years 11 months ago

In the recent Ghost of Tsushima State of Play, developer Sucker Punch showed how you'll be able to play as its protagonist Jin in two ways: the Samurai and the Ghost. While the game distinguishes the two as honorable and dishonorable paths, it won't force you to choose one or the other.

In an interview with IGN, creative director on Ghost of Tsushima, Jason Connell, explained that the team initially thought about putting in a morality system to govern your actions as Jin, akin to the one in the studio's previous Infamous games. But ultimately, the team decided against it, letting Jin's transformation unfold naturally.

"We thought about [a morality meter] because we had the karma system in [Infamous: Second Son], but we realized it was more important to us that we wanted to tell a human story of someone who is this way and has to evolve into something else, versus transform completely into something else," Connell explained. "He doesn't flip flop back and forth, it muddied it up for us. We really wanted the story to reflect his transformation."

Everything We Know About Crucible, Amazon's Multiplayer Shooter

3 years 11 months ago

Three years after it was announced, Amazon's first PC game is finally making its debut. Third-person multiplayer shooter Crucible is trying to carve out a place in the genre, and it's doing so by being similar to, but not quite the same as, many of the other competitive shooters on the market.

A big difference between Crucible and similar games is the addition of PvE elements that tie into its in-match progression system. In Crucible, you're not just fighting the other team, you're fighting various beasts scattered throughout the game world. Beating those PvE monsters gives you the fuel to rank up your team and make them more lethal and resilient on the battlefield, so you're better equipped to take on other players when they show up.

We've played Crucible a few times now and got a sense of the game world, the characters, the progression, and the PvE elements. Here's everything we know about Crucible.

New Fallout 76 Update: Patch Notes Add Ally Customization, New Limited-Time Events

3 years 11 months ago

Bethesda has released Update 19 for Fallout 76, and it adds a significant amount of new content to its multiplayer take on the beloved RPG series. For one, you can now finally customize the clothes that your allies wear by sharing your wardrobe with them. These outfits are purely cosmetic, however, and they cannot wear power armor or carry specific weapons.

The patch adds support for some upcoming limited-time events on the Fallout 76 calendar. Starting May 21, players can hunt Mole Miners in order to obtain their loot, which is sorted into three different tiers of rarity. Soon after that, the Fasnacht Parade will make its return, which tasks players with protecting marchers in a parade route. Additionally, the patch introduces more challenges for Nuclear Winter, which is 76's 52-player battle royale mode.

As with previous patches, Update 19 tweaks a large number of small aspects of the game, fixing many bugs and adjusting quests. For example, when players craft new weapons and armors, the automatically-generated names should now follow a more consistent pattern, and changing your backpack skin is a lot easier now.

Sony To Announce PS5 Game Lineup "Soon"

3 years 11 months ago

The next generation is fast approaching, but so far we haven't seen many games for either of the new platforms. That could change soon, as Sony said in a recent investor meeting that it's preparing to show off its PlayStation 5 lineup.

In a Sony corporate strategy meeting, the company said it plans to "introduce a compelling lineup of titles soon" for the new platform. That phrasing is vague enough that it could be any time, but considering the console is still targeting a fall launch, we expect to see more details sometime over the summer.

Ordinarily, such a reveal would be planned for an event like E3, but Sony bowed out of the annual event even before it was canceled due to coronavirus. That has left a lot of the usual publisher events up to their own schedule, and the pandemic has reportedly scrambled some of Sony's PR plans.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare's Latest Update Once Again Has A Massive File Size

3 years 11 months ago

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is one of the most successful entries in the CoD franchise in years, due in part to the popularity of its free-to-play battle royale mode, Warzone. However, there's one aspect of the package that's had fans up in arms for months now, and that's the ballooning size of the game and its updates. The most recent May 18 patch is no exception, weighing in at nearly 31 GB across Xbox One, PS4, and PC. We've got the patch notes here.

With massive updates like that, it's no wonder that Modern Warfare is inching toward the 200 GB mark. Prior to the patch, the game required around 180 GB of hard drive space, with some fans complaining that they need around 100 GB free just to download a 30 GB patch. In the rollout of Season 2 back in February, when fans complained about the size of the accompanying patch--which was around 94 GB on PC and smaller on consoles--Infinity Ward said that future updates would be smaller.

The Last Of Us 2 Gets Special PS4 Pro Limited Edition Console

3 years 11 months ago

The Last of Us 2 is just a month away, and Sony has now debuted a limited edition PS4 Pro bundle that will launch alongside the game. The bundle includes a PS4 Pro and controller with a unique TLOU 2 design, the game, and a digital voucher for a dynamic theme, avatars, and other goodies.

The console has a matte finish PS4 Pro engraved with the design of Ellie's tattoo, and a similar design element on the controller with the TLOU 2 logo on the touchpad. The bundle will cost $400, while the controller is available to pre-order separately as a standalone purchase for $65.

"When the opportunity arose to create a custom PS4 Pro for The Last of Us Part 2, I worked with our graphic designer at the time, Angel Garcia, and we considered a few different ideas, but we kept coming back to Ellie's tattoo," said John Sweeney in the announcement. "By that point, it had become a symbol of the game and for the community--much like the Firefly logo in the first game. It was the clear choice, but we wondered: what if it could be engraved? It hadn't been done before, so we weren't sure it was even possible, but thanks to the incredible efforts of the teams at PlayStation, we found a way."

In a follow-up tweet, the New Super Lucky's Tale account addressed a fan who owned the original game on Xbox One, and was wondering if the "New" version would be available as an update. New Super Lucky's Tale is being treated as a "new" game, though, as quite a bit has been changed--so fans of the original will need to buy this version of the game anew.

Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road, The Upcoming Mobile Game, Has Been Delayed

3 years 11 months ago

Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road, the upcoming fast-paced mobile spin-off, has been delayed. The game, which was originally targeting a Spring 2020 release, will now arrive later than expected.

The news of the game's delay was announced on its official Twitter account, which said that more details will be revealed in June. Kingdom Hearts fans will have to wait a while to find out when Dark Road is releasing, but as the tweet notes, "current conditions" amid the COVID-19 pandemic aren't ideal for development.

If it still comes out this year, it'll be the second Kingdom Hearts release of 2020, following Kingdom Hearts III Re:mind. Once it releases, Dark Road will be available within the Kingdom Hearts Union X app, although it'll be a standalone experience.

The game will explore the pass of villain Xehanort, so fans of Kingdom Hearts' lore will likely appreciate it. Hopefully we'll have an updated release window soon.

Colin Farrell Says He Has Some "Tasty" Scenes In The Batman

3 years 11 months ago

Actor Colin Farrell has shared a little more information about the upcoming Batman movie starring Robert Pattinson that shut down production recently due to COVID-19. In a recent interview with GMA, Farrell said The Batman feels "original and fun," adding that he's excited to return to filming.

Farrell, who plays Penguin in the film, set expectations for fans that his character isn't the focus of the movie. However, the Irish actor said Penguin is featured in some "tasty" scenes, which certainly gives us a lot to think about.

"I had only started it and I can't wait to get back. The creation of it, the aesthetic of the character, has been fun and I really am so excited to get back and explore it," Farrell said (via Collider). "And I haven't got that much to do. I have a certain amount in the film. I am not all over it by any means. But there are a couple of some tasty scenes I have in it ... and I can't wait to get back."

Madden Bowl Winner Never Throws A Pass, Wins Tournament And $65,000

3 years 11 months ago

The latest Madden Bowl competitive gaming tournament took place over the weekend, and Raidel "Joke" Brito won the series and claimed a giant cash prize in addition to bragging rights. It's notable because, despite being one of the best players on the Madden pro scene, Joke had never won the Bowl. Not only did he win this year's event, but he claimed the title in the final without throwing a single pass.

That's right, Joke defeated Daniel "Dcroft" Mycroft by a score of 17-0 with his run-only offense. In fact, Joke won all of his Madden NFL 20 games in the tournament without ever passing the ball, according to ESPN.

Joke employed a unique strategy to secure the victory. He opted to select specialist players, forgoing a true quarterback, and instead chose to run the ball and rely on his defense to win the tournament. The event was conducted virtually this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can watch a replay of the competition in the video above.

Maneater Launch Trailer Looks Like The Meg From The Shark's Perspective

3 years 11 months ago

Maneater is out on PC, PS4, and XBox One on May 22 (and will come to Switch later this year), so it's not long now until we can take control of the game's shark protagonist and wreck havoc. It reminds us a lot of The Meg, Jason Statham's fun shark action movie, but with the comedy ramped right up.

The trailer frames Maneater as the next season of a shlocky TV drama about a shark out for revenge. Said shark will be able to fight other sharks, leap out of the water to eat people, and spin through the air to dodge bullets--so don't expect anything too scientifically accurate.

Check out the trailer below--but bear in mind that it's pretty violent.

One thing's for sure--it looks a lot better than earlier shark action game Jaws Unleashed, a game that never once let you smack an explosive canister into a boat with your tail like you were spiking a volleyball.

Maneater will retail for $40 across all platforms. For more details, here's the game's first 13 minutes.

Halo: MCC Bugs Are One Step Closer To Being Fixed

3 years 11 months ago

Halo developer 343 Industries is now one step closer to releasing a hotfix for The Master Chief Collection that should sort out some of the issues that are currently impacting the experience. If you need a refresher, a recent Master Chief Collection update added Halo 2 Anniversary on PC and made changes on Xbox One as well, but the release was riddled with bugs.

In a blog post, 343 said it has created fixes for three of the most pressing issues with The Master Chief Collection, including projectile physics that are borked, match stability in Halo 3, and crashes in Halo 3 on the Valhalla map. Assuming everything goes to plan from here on out, 343 will release a hotfix that fixes these issues in the near future. Before the update can be released, 343 needs to have it certified for released, and that can take time.

"As the build moves through this standard release process, we will continue to share daily updates on its progress," 343 said. "Thank you for your reports and continued patience as we work to address these issues."

A Free Kerbal Space Program Update Will Introduce Some Real-Life Space Missions

3 years 11 months ago

Kerbal Space Program is teaming up with the European Space Agency (ESA) to launch a free update, which will celebrate the ESA’s numerous contributions to space exploration.

The update is called “Shared Horizons” and will include two new missions recreating ESA ventures, using the Arian 5 rocket and some ESA-themed space suits for Kerbals.

"Here at the European Space Agency, many of our engineers and scientists are very familiar with KSP," ESA Director of Science Günther Hasinger said in a statement on the ESA official website. "Both Rosetta and BepiColombo are highly complex missions that have specific challenges; however, each prove to be very rewarding for ESA and the global scientific community. Because of this, I am very happy that these ground-breaking science missions can be experienced on Kerbin as well as on Earth."
