Cliff Bleszinski Reflects On The Closure Of His Studio, Boss Key

3 years 11 months ago

Cliff Bleszinski, the designer of the original Gears of War games, has reflected on the closure of his latest studio, Boss Key. Appearing on the Animal Talking show with Star Wars writer Gary Whitta, Bleszinski said the closure of his studio affected him personally in a serious and significant way.

"I was deeply, deeply depressed for about a year," he said. "My doctor put me on Lexapro for a little bit. That messed me up, so I got off that. It was one of the hardest things to happen to me in my entire life. It was almost harder than losing my father when I was 15 years old."

Half-Life: Alyx Update 1.4 Introduces Incredible New Liquid Physics

3 years 11 months ago

Half-Life: Alyx has received a new update, bringing the game up to version 1.4, and it's added a nifty new feature--liquid inside bottles. That's not normally the kind of thing that would excite us, but Half-Life: Alyx's liquids are an exception.

The GIF below shows off the new liquid in action inside a bottle, and it looks extremely realistic. The new feature isn't the liquid itself so much as the physics underpinning it, which should look extra impressive in VR.

No Caption Provided

Update 1.4 adds several other features and fixes to the game, including a raft of new subtitles, some UI improvements, and crash fixes. The Workshop has also been updated, which will be good news for anyone who likes to tinker.

Minecraft Dungeons Has A Clothing Line That Includes Proper Dungeon-Crawling Cloaks

3 years 11 months ago

Minecraft Dungeons is out now, and Microsoft has teamed up with the fashion company CLOAK to release a clothing series for the title--including, yes, a series of wearable cloaks. The brand, which was co-founded by Minecraft content creators Markiplier and Jacksepticeye, has released a whole range of Minecraft clothing.

Along with cloaks, which are undoubtedly the highlight (especially if you're living in a cold climate currently), there's also shirts, hoodies, jogger pants, and caps available. All the clothing in this range is inspired by Minecraft Dungeons, and the Bauhaus and De Stijl art movements are cited as influences.

No Caption Provided

The cloaks are "ultra-limited", according to the press release, and are designed for comfort in mind. They're also, of course, the exact sort of outfit you might wear if you were exploring a dungeon. You can see more from the range below.

GTA 6 Release Window Might Still Be A Few Years Away [Update]

3 years 11 months ago

Grand Theft Auto VI is presumed to be the next title in development at Rockstar Games, and now an SEC filing by publisher Take-Two Interactive might indicate that it won't be ready until 2023. [Update: Take-Two has contradicted the takeaway in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, saying the table only reflects marketing commitments for third-party companies and not its internal projects. As a result, this wouldn't indicate any potential marketing spend on a new Rockstar game.]

A 10-K filing by Take-Two, which includes presumed marketing spend for the next five years, shows that the company is planning to spend over $89 million in its 2023 financial year. This period starts on April 1 2023 and ends on March 31 2024, with double the marketing budget than any other year during this five-year stretch by. According to analyst Jeff Cohen of investment firm Stephens (and reported by VentureBeat), the budget is likely for Grand Theft Auto VI.

Despite this, Cohen points to previous 10-K filings by Take-Two where the marketing budget accurately predicted the launch windows of games before their announcement, with Red Dead Redemption 2 being the most recent example. Although timeline can change over a five-year forecast, it seems plausible that Take-Two's current plan is to launch the next Grand Theft Auto installment a decade after Grand Theft Auto V.

Danganronpa--The First Game In This Amazing Visual Novel Series Is Now Available On Mobile

3 years 11 months ago

Danganronpa, the cult-classic visual novel that recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in Japan, is now available on mobile for the first time. The first part of the trilogy is on both iOS and Android, and the store description specifically calls it "Part 1" of an anniversary release--because Danganronpa 2 and 3 are coming as well.

The first game in the series casts players as Makoto Naegi, a new student at Hope's Peak, a top-class school that only invites students who are at the absolute top of their field--but Naegi has been invited as the "most lucky" student, having gotten in based on a lottery system.

The students that arrive at the school soon find themselves locked off from the rest of the world and issued a challenge by Monokuma, a malevolent teddy bear (stay with me here)--the only way to escape the school is to commit a murder and not get caught during the class trial that follows. If one student can convince the others to unanimously declare the wrong party guilty, they'll be allowed to escape while everyone else is killed.

It's a weird, fun adventure, and has become a cult classic since its 2010 release in Japan on the PSP. The Vita version received an 8/10 in GameSpot's review.

The game is $15.99 on iOS and $17.99 on Android. It's also available on Vita, PS4, and PC. Release dates for the second and third games on mobile have not been announced as of yet.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Is Changing Progression And Cutting Down The Grind--Here's How It Will Work

3 years 11 months ago

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is in the works for the launch of both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (as well as PC and current systems), and it's going to introduce a few changes to the Assassin's Creed formula. The two most recent games in the series, Origins and Odyssey, have taken the series in a new direction by melding the action gameplay with RPG elements. Valhalla isn't necessarily dropping those, but it sounds like progression will be a bit different in the new game. It should serve as a more comfortable play experience for fans of the earlier games, which were pure action-adventure games with very little in the way of role-playing elements.

Talking to Kotaku, creative director Ashraf Ismail has delved into the game's progression system, as well as how new missions will be doled out, among other details. Ismail says that one of the goals with this game is to prevent players from hitting progression walls, so that you're less likely to need to grind to level up.

"We have a new take on progression in this game," Ismail says. "We have more the concept of power, power that is gained through, let’s say, the player gaining skills." He wants to avoid "big progression walls" with this game, so that players can explore freely without being held back too much.

8 Things You Should Know About Minecraft Dungeons Before You Play

3 years 11 months ago

Minecraft Dungeons is a brand new spin-off from blockbuster crafting game Minecraft, but it's pretty different to its source material. What I mean is, even if you're a huge fan of Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons might not necessarily be what you're expecting--instead of mining blocks, chopping down trees, and building all kinds of creative structures like you would in a building game like Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons is an action role-playing game. For those less acquainted with the genre, that means it involves the hacking and slashing of a lot of monsters and other bad things, taking inspiration from a variety of classic titles like the illustrious Diablo series.

Minecraft Dungeons tells the story of a bad guy called the Arch-Illager, who was ostracized by a group of mean Villagers because he looked a bit different to them--sort of like what happened to Shriek in Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Anyway, he ended up becoming quite powerful, which radically accentuated the chip on his shoulder and made him reckon it was a good idea to set loads of villages on fire. Naturally, Minecraft Dungeons is all about your quest to stop him.

Once you're up to speed, consider reading about our essential tips and tricks for playing Minecraft Dungeons, and keep an eye out for more nitty-gritty guides coming soon.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Review Roundup--Check Out The Scores Here

3 years 11 months ago

Over the past decade, the Xenoblade series has transformed from a little-known cult series into one of the biggest Japanese RPG series of the current day, known for their strategic real-time combat and sprawling worlds. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition has finally arrived to the delight of a much larger fanbase than it had back on its original Wii release in 2010, and the reviews are unabashedly positive.

In our Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition review, critic Jacob Dekker gave the game a 9/10, calling it one of the most memorable JRPGs of its era. "Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is just as vast and fantastical as it was in 2010," he wrote. "...Definitive Edition proves that Xenoblade Chronicles is still a fantastic JRPG with an immense amount of strategic depth that's still impressive in 2020. Its bevy of improvements and additions, as well as its fantastic epilogue, make this an adventure worth embarking on a decade later."

We've rounded up some more reviews below, with most of them finding few flaws with the game. In general, critics praise the improvements to the game's more dated-aspects, particularly in regards to the UI and quality-of-life improvements like map markers. However, some chide the game for a high level of perceived "grindiness," as well as faulting its sidequests for lacking much in the way of depth.

The Last Of Us Part 2 State Of Play Is Coming Today

3 years 11 months ago

The Last of Us Part II will be the focus of Sony's next State of Play stream, scheduled to take place today, May 27, at 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET / 10 PM CEST.

The stream will feature a deep-dive on gameplay mechanics seen in previous showings of the sequel, with Naughty Dog vice president and The Last of Us Part II co-director Neil Druckmann narrating the footage. Although a lot of the stream will give context to gameplay that's already been shown, there will be around eight minutes of gameplay for a brand-new area of the game, too.

The State of Play stream is expected to be around 20 minutes long in total, similar to the most recent stream for Sony's other upcoming PS4 exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima. And in case you were wondering, Sony makes it very clear in the announcement of this State of Play that there will be no mention of the PlayStation 5. While $15 isn't a huge discount, all three of the games are currently full price at other major retailers, and Dragon Quest XI is sold out at Amazon right now. We have seen Octopath Traveler for as low as $30 and Dragon Quest XI for under $40 at one point, but there's no telling when they will dip below $45 again. Meanwhile, Dragon Quest Builders 2 has received regular discounts on PS4 and PC, but we don't often see it on sale for Switch.
