Call Of Duty: Warzone Playlist Update Features A Stripped-Down Battle Royale Mode

3 years 11 months ago

Some new content is headed to Call of Duty: Warzone on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One later this week, developer Infinity Ward confirmed. This includes updating the battle royale's game modes and more.

First up is the introduction of Blood Money Quads. Instead of a group of three, however, players can take teams of four into the battle royale's Blood Money mode, giving you more opportunities to collecting cash and complete contracts.

In addition to Blood Money Quads, Infinity Ward is adding a new limited-time game mode: Classic Battle Royale. As the name implies, this mode removes all the extras from Warzone's battle royale experience, stripping it to the barest of essentials. There are no buy stations, no contacts, and no Gulag to give players any sort of edge in-game this time around.

Pokemon Go Will Let You Vote On The Next Community Day Pokemon

3 years 11 months ago

Pokemon Go's May Community Day is set for this weekend, but players will have a chance to shape the game's next two events. As it did back in February, developer Niantic is letting players vote on what the featured Pokemon will be for June and July's Community Days.

This time around, rather than casting votes by completing in-game Field Research tasks, players will simply be able to vote for their Pokemon of choice via a Twitter poll, which will be live from May 23-24. There will be four candidates to choose from; the one that receives the most votes will be June's featured Pokemon, while the runner-up will be July's.

The four candidates, and the Community Day moves they'd be able to learn if selected, are as follows:

Call Of Duty: Warzone Adds An "Armor Box" Item

3 years 11 months ago

Call of Duty: Warzone, the free-to-play battle royale spin-off of Modern Warfare, has gotten a new item with the latest update. The "Armor Box" can be purchased before or during a battle if you need a little extra protection. According to an update on the Call of Duty Blog, the new Armor Box is available across all battle royale modes. It's similar to a Munitions Box in that you can use it to supply the entire team, but as the name implies, it provides armor instead of ammo. You can find it in ground loot or supply boxes, or you can purchase it at the Buy station.

That's not the only change in Warzone this week. The update also adds more weapons to the Gulag, giving ranged options that Infinity Ward hopes will make for more diverse strategies. And a limited-time "Classic Battle Royale" mode gives you the same Warzone but without Buy Stations, Contracts, or the Gulag.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone have been getting frequent updates, both with game updates like new maps and balance changes, as well as security measures. Recently the game added mandatory 2FA as an anti-cheating measure on PC.

Call Of Duty: Warzone Adding More Weapons To Gulag Duels

3 years 11 months ago

The Gulag is one of Call of Duty: Warzone's most defining elements, letting players fight for their right to return back into the game after dying. And if you thought your options within the cramped tiled walls of the prison were limited, developer Infinity Ward is giving you more weapons to play with.

When you're sent to the Gulag, you start a one-on-one match with a random weapon. The pool for these options was shallow, however, with only pistols and shotguns available. This meant that options for ranged engagements were limited, which is why this week's update will introduce SMGs and assault rifles into the mix.

Specifically, you can look forward to getting served the AK-47, M13, Kilo 141, Ram-7, Striker 45, and more when fighting in the Gulag. Infinity Ward hopes that these additions will shake up the way players approach these duels, with more options beyond simply rushing your opponent.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Adds New Gunfight Map This Week

3 years 11 months ago

Another week means some new content will hit Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. This week, developer Infinity Ward will introduce a new Gunfight map to Modern Warfare's multiplayer mode: Aisle 9.

Infinity Ward said there are "multiple ways to fight on this small map," which will host a variety of game modes in its own playlist. Dubbed "Clean Up on Aisle 9," the 3v3 moshpit will feature Domination, Grind, Kill Confirmed, and Team Deathmatch. It will also get tossed into the mode's map rotation.

I wonder if that truck is good for cover...

Some other additions and changes will come to both Modern Warfare and Warzone this week as well. This includes a new multiplayer map, bringing more weapons into The Gulag, adding a new item to Warzone, and more.

Epic Games Store Just Made Things Easier If You Buy Games On Other Stores

3 years 11 months ago

The Epic Games Store is partnering with three more digital retailers for keyless game authentications, similar to its partnership with The Humble Store last year.

Fanatical, Green Man Gaming, and Genba Digital have announced integration with the Epic Games Store, letting your purchases appear on the client without any additional steps. Each of these retailers will now let you link your Epic Games account to their storefront. When you purchase a game, it will then automatically appear in the Epic Games client on your PC, without the need to add it manually using a generated key. Epic Games states it does not take a cut of game sales from third-party retailers.

This process helps both consumers and game developers. For consumers it streamlines the process of purchases, and gives additional choices when making a purchase decision. For game developers and publishers, it gives them the peace of mind that sales of its games are coming from legitimate retailers, with the removal of generated keys meaning fewer grey market sales issues.

3 years 11 months ago

Pokemon Go's May Community Day is just around the corner. The event takes place this Sunday, May 24, and just like last month, developer Niantic is tweaking the event to make it easier to participate in from home amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. To catch you up, we've rounded up everything you need to know about May 2020's Pokemon Go Community Day below.

May's Featured Pokemon: Seedot

The featured Pokemon during this month's Community Day is Seedot, a Grass type first introduced in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. Throughout the event, Seedot will appear in the wild much more frequently than usual, making this a good chance to stock up on Seedot Candy. You may also encounter Shiny Seedot during the event with a little persistence and luck.

May's Community Day Move: Bullet Seed

If you can evolve Nuzleaf--Seedot's evolved form--into Shiftry during May's Community Day, it'll know the event-exclusive move Bullet Seed, which it normally cannot learn in Pokemon Go. You'll have up to two hours after the event ends to evolve Nuzleaf and have it learn Bullet Seed.

Oculus Quest Will Let You Use Your Hands As Controllers Starting This Week

3 years 11 months ago

Last year Oculus added hand-tracking support to its standalone VR headset, the Oculus Quest. While it was initially released as an experimental feature, it will be released to all users at the end of this month.

Hand-tracking support on the Oculus Quest requires no new peripherals or setup. The feature uses the same built-in cameras and sensors to detect both of your hands and individual finger motion, giving you an alternative input option to the included Oculus Touch controllers.

Apps and games need to be updated with this support in mind, which is why Oculus initially released the features as an experimental one. In a blog post announcing the move to a full release, Oculus highlighted three games (Elixir, The Curious Tale of Stolen Pets, and Waltz of the Wizard) that will make use of hand-tracking when the feature releases with a Oculus software update this week. Oculus also stated that it will begin accepting third-party titles with hand-tracking support on the Oculus Store from May 28.

Mortal Kombat 11's Friendships Showcased In New Aftermath DLC Trailer

3 years 11 months ago

Over the years, the Mortal Kombat series has offered a panoply of ways of finishing off your opponent, from the original "fatalities" to the infantile "babalities" and even the beastial "animalities." Starting in Mortal Kombat 2, however, you could also choose to spare your opponent with a goofy gesture of "friendship," such as Scorpion cranking a jack-in-the-box with a skull in it, or Shang Tsung making a rainbow.

Now, NetherRealm Studios is bringing back friendships for Mortal Kombat 11 as part of a free content update ahead of its Aftermath expansion. According to the trailer, these friendships include Jax playing a lengthy saxophone solo, Liu Kang disco-dancing, and the long-awaited return of Raiden's diminutive friend (and possible nephew) Kidd Thunder. Kitana's friendship involves her playing patty-cake with her "sister" Mileena, a possible new character tease, since she is not a playable character in MK11.

You can perform friendships on May 26, the same release date as Mortal Kombat 11's new expansion. Titled Aftermath, it will add new playable characters--including the wind god Fujin, the four-armed Sheeva, and special guest RoboCop--as well as new story content that explores where MK11 left off. The free friendship update will also include brand new arenas, including classic favorites like MK2's Dead Pool and MK3's Soul Chamber, as well as introducing stage fatalities back to the franchise.

Pokemon Sword & Shield's Gigantamax Eevee Event Begins Today

3 years 11 months ago

Gigantamax Pikachu is leaving Max Raids in Pokemon Sword and Shield today, but another previously exclusive Pokemon will take its place. Starting at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET, Gigantamax Eevee will appear in Max Raid dens around the Wild Area for a limited time, giving everyone a chance to catch one.

Up until this event, the only way to get Gigantamax Eevee in Sword or Shield was if you had save data for Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee on your Switch. If you fell into that category, you would receive Gigantamax Eevee as a free gift from a character in the Wild Area station. Thanks to this event, however, you can catch one even if you don't have a Let's Go, Eevee save.

Much like Gigantamax Pikachu before it, Gigantamax Eevee cannot evolve. You'll need to refresh your Raid dens before it begins appearing in your game. You can do so either by connecting online via the Y-Comm or going into Mystery Gift and selecting Get the Wild Area news.

Respawn Opens New Studio Focused Entirely On Apex Legends

3 years 11 months ago

Respawn Entertainment has come a long way since the critically-acclaimed Titanfall 2 fell well-below EA's sales expectations in 2016. The combination of the free-to-play shooter Apex Legends and the cinematic action game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order gave the studio an outstanding 2019. As it marks its tenth anniversary, Respawn has announced that it is expanding, with a second studio opening in Vancouver that will focus entirely on Apex Legends.

According to interviews with key Respawn staff conducted by GamesIndustry.biz--including with Apex game director Chad Grenier and head of operations Henry Lee--the decision to expand into Canada is driven in part by the existing EA Vancouver campus. Lee says the proximity to other EA developers will help the studio leverage their resources more efficiently. Additionally, Grenier says that the new location will help Apex grow into a larger franchise like Call of Duty and FIFA.

Yes, There Really Is A Chex Quest HD, And It's Free On Steam

3 years 11 months ago

Chex Quest was the result of one of the most creative ad campaigns of the '90s, which bundled a non-violent take on Doom with Chex cereal. Now, General Mills has released an HD remake of the original Chex Quest on Steam, and it's free.

The Chex Quest of 1996 was essentially an ambitious Doom mod, which meant that it used a now-dated combination of 2D sprites in 3D environments. This HD remake overhauls the game's visuals, as well as adding in multiplayer modes with six playable characters. This is still an advergame, however: In order to unlock those characters, you can buy packages of Chex Mix or check Chex Mix's Instagram account for the codes.

Despite its "advergame" status, many kids from the era fondly remember playing Chex Quest as one of their formative PC gaming experiences, which has led to its continued popularity over the years. Recently, boutique publisher Limited Run Games announced that it will be giving the game a physical release, as well as a $150 collector's edition that comes with a replica Zorcher and several other goodies. Today is the last day to pre-order either package.

Following a rebranding to Mojang Studios, the Microsoft-owned developer is celebrating over 200 million sales of Minecraft, with over 126 million players logging in monthly.

The milestone was celebrated during a difficult period for Mojang Studios due to the ongoing challenges present by COVID-19. Helen Chiang, Studio Head at Mojang Studios, explains in a Minecraft update that as soon as the pandemic started affecting its players, the studio switched to thinking about how to better support its players.

One of those initiatives was to make Minecraft: Education Edition free until the end of June, helping educators use Minecraft to engage learners remotely. Since March 24, Mojang Studios has seen a big uptake in its educational Minecraft offering, with over 50 million downloads of education content from the Minecraft Marketplace.

Bad News: Destiny 2's The Lie Quest Is Bugged

3 years 11 months ago

After a week of players working together to complete the first step of Destiny 2's latest story quest, "The Lie," it appears many won't be able to finish it. The last step of the quest is bugged, failing to trigger the mission players have to go through to get their reward.

Bungie confirmed the issue Sunday night on Twitter. After completing the other steps of the quest, The Lie directs you to Rasputin's bunker on the Moon to activate a mission called "The Tyrant." For many, starting the quest respawns you not at its start, but near bounty vendor Eris Morn at the Moon's main landing zone. When that happens, there's no way to advance; you just have to quit the activity and try to load it again. As of this writing, we've tried to run the quest roughly 10 times, to no avail.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated's Boss Fight Trailer Makes Us Nostalgic

3 years 11 months ago

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, which is due to release on June 23, has shown off its boss fights in a new trailer. Watching this footage reminds us of the hey-day of the PS2 3D platformer--after all, this is a remake of a game from 2003, when boss fights like this were a dime a dozen.

In the footage below, you can see SpongeBob take on a variety of giant enemies, including robots based on his friends, a huge jellyfish, and his arc nemesis, Plankton. The game has received a huge visual update, but it still looks like a PS2 platformer in many ways--and that, for many fans, is surely a good thing.

Battle for Bikini Bottom is receiving the remake treatment because the original game has earned something of a cult following among the speedrunning community--and also because SpongeBob is still going, with a new movie on the way, and the 12th season of the TV show currently airing sporadically.

After New Halo: MCC Update Causes Issues, Developer Working On A Hotfix

3 years 11 months ago

Halo: The Master Chief Collection's latest update, which also brought Halo 2 Anniversary to PC, did not go exactly to plan. The release led to numerous bugs, issues, and oddities, and now developer 343 Industries has posted an update that explains what's being done to fix them.

As of May 17, 343 said it conducted a "full day of testing" on the changes to address the issues, and the developer is seeing "good results" so far. An upcoming "hotfix" patch for The Master Chief Collection will feature fixes for two main issues.

First, the hotfix will address a projectile bug in Halo 2 that caused various projectiles to not operate as intended. 343 said it identified and fixed the bug, and players can expect the fix soon. The hotfix will also address issues with Halo 3 including rubber-banding, desycned vehicles, and missing effects. Additionally, 343 continues to look into a problem with the Valhalla map that can cause the game to crash in custom games and matchmaking. While the studio has not yet fixed this issue in its internal tests, it believes it will be able to do so and include it with the upcoming hotfix.

Epic Games Store Now Offers A Partial Refund If You Buy A Game Shortly Before It Goes On Sale

3 years 11 months ago

If you've ever bought a game on a digital store and then seen it go on sale at a greatly reduced price days later, you know how painful an experience it can be. If you're using the Epic Games Store to buy games, though, that feeling might soon be a thing of the past--users are now receiving partial refunds for recent purchases made before a game comes on sale.

This news comes via Joshua Boggs, the director at Studio MayDay (and previous director of Framed at Loveshack Entertainment), who tweeted out part of an email he received about a partial refund being paid into his account.

"You recently placed orders from the Epic Games Store," the email reads. "The price of the game(s) you purchased were recently lowered, so we are issue partial refunds for the difference(s)."

This means that players will receive back what they would have saved. It's a very generous move, in line with their recent decision to not charge developers royalties on their games until they hit $1 million in revenue.

Disney Has Shut Down A Club Penguin Clone For Being Wildly Inappropriate

3 years 11 months ago

Disney has ordered all unauthorized clones of Club Penguin to be shut down after a fan-run clone was found by the BBC to be exposing children to explicit messages.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a fan-made Club Penguin Online server was flooded with over a million new players. Usually this would be enough for Disney to order a take down, with Club Penguin falling under the mega corporation’s ownership in 2007 for $350 million.

It seems some fans have missed the original so much that they made their own server of the game, using stolen or copied source code. These clones are relatively easy to find online, with even children finding their way onto the servers. This is where the issue lies, as the nature of this particular Club Penguin clone was not suitable for children at all.

There's A New Harry Potter Game On Mobile, But It's Probably Not Very Magical

3 years 11 months ago

There's a new Harry Potter game coming to mobile, but it doesn't look like it's going to be quite as exciting as Wizards Unite. The game, which has received its first trailer ahead of release, is called Harry Potter: Puzzles and Spells, and it's a match-3 puzzle game.

You can watch the trailer in the tweet below, although it doesn't show off any gameplay.

The game is being released under the Portkeys label, and is developed by Zynga (Words with Friends, Farmville). It seems to be set early in Harry's time at Hogwarts, based on how young the characters are in the key art. If you're in Australia, the game has already soft-launched on both the App Store and Google Play--but other regions will have to wait a little longer. No release date has been announced.

Ubisoft's latest financial report included new details on microtransaction spending for Rainbow Six Siege and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey. In short, both are performing very well in regards to microtransansactions.

Ubisoft categorizes microtransactions as Player Recurring Spending (PRI), which covers digital items, DLC, season passes, subscriptions, and advertising. The team-based tactical shooter Rainbow Six Siege enjoyed "record engagement" in the months of January, February, and March 2020, with PRI spending jumping by 26 percent.

That's an incredible achievement for a game that was released in 2015. Ubisoft will be supporting Siege for a long time to come, as the company is releasing the game as a launch title for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X later this year. GameSpot recently re-reviewed Siege, and we awarded it a 10/10.

Ubisoft Files Lawsuit Against Google And Apple Over Alleged Rainbow Six Siege Copycat

3 years 11 months ago

Rainbow Six Siege is one of the most popular multiplayer games on the planet, so it comes as little surprise that it has its share of imitators. One such imitator, however, is doing more than that in eyes of Ubisoft. The company has filed a lawsuit against both Google and Apple for selling a game Ubisoft says is a direct ripoff.

As reported by Bloomberg, Ubisoft's suit against Google and Apple concerns the game Area F2, a multiplayer shooter created by Chinese mega-corporation Alibaba and its website Ejoy. According to Ubisoft's suit, the game allegedly copies Rainbow Six Siege's user interface, including its final score screen and the operator selection screen. Area F2 is available in the United States on mobile devices and is currently in a free period, while Rainbow Six Siege is only on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Prior to filing the lawsuit, Ubisoft said it had told Apple and Google that the game infringed on its copyrights but the games were not taken down. The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles, and neither Google nor Apple have commented on it yet.

We Revere Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Because It Helped Form Our Identity

3 years 11 months ago

I probably speak for many of us in our mid/late-20s or early-30s when I say that the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games were a cultural phenomenon that permeated our real lives at a young, impressionable age. We were smart enough to realize that dreams of launching off ramps to land a Kickflip Mctwist or grinding on a 50-foot handrail doing a Casper Slide were well out of reach, yet that didn't stop us from asking our moms for a cheap deck and a few bucks to buy our new favorite punk band's album on CD. But while many impulses or fads throughout the years have come and gone, the ones born out of THPS have been ever-lasting.

Seeing the reveal of THPS 1 and 2 remastered was yet another reminder that the storied video game series has, in many ways, significantly helped in forming our identities. I vividly remember watching Tony Hawk himself landing the first 900 at the 1999 X-Games and realizing it was sports history in the making, yet it wasn't quite the motivation to seek out skating for myself. Participating in the act virtually in THPS bridged that gap and packaged a chunk of skate culture in a form that I did have expertise in: video games. And through the THPS games, I then looked at skating more like, "this shit is cool."
