3 years 4 months ago

Fortnite has had no shortage of superhero guests in 2020, including everyone from Deadpool to Aquaman, and it's adding one more hero before the year is up. The legendary archer Green Arrow will arrive in the game on December 31 exclusively for Fortnite Crew members.

Green Arrow's look in the game is based on his appearance from The CW's Arrow series, so he may appear a little bit different than the one featured in the comics or in games like Injustice 2. Original Silent Hill Creator Is Working On New Horror-Action Game

3 years 4 months ago

Last month, Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama announced he had founded a new company called Bokeh Game Studio with veteran developers from games like Gravity Rush and The Last Guardian. Now, we have learned more about Toyama's first project, and it should appeal to Silent Hill fans.

In an interview with IGN Japan, Toyama said his new game would be an action-adventure game rather than a standard survival-horror experience. However, he said it would "appeal to fans of [his] previous work," quite clearly referencing Silent Hill. That series has been on ice for several years now, with Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro's collaborative Silent Hills project being canceled in 2015. The demo, PT, was deleted from the PlayStation Store, and PS4 consoles that have it installed have become valuable.

"If anything, this will be more of a horror-oriented game," Toyama added. "But we will focus on making this a broader entertainment experience rather than a hardcore horror game."

Yes, KFC's Game Console Is Real, And It Has A Chicken Warmer

3 years 4 months ago

KFC has become something of a meme factory over the last few years, with different celebrities playing Colonel Sanders in commercials and Mario Lopez even starring as the long-dead founder in a short romance film for Lifetime. We saw teases on the KFC Gaming Twitter account of a KFC-branded game console for months, and we assumed it was all a joke. Well, it wasn't. The KFConsole is real, and it keeps your chicken warm.

Intel's Mark Walton clarified that the console is legitimate on Twitter, saying it's powered by Intel. Other game consoles are generally powered by AMD processors.

The Cooler Master page provides more information on the system, saying it's capable of 4K resolution and 240fps gameplay. We can't imagine that's for graphically demanding games, but it's impressive nonetheless. Cooler Master primarily focuses on custom PC builds, but this is pretty different from anything else the company has done.

Among Us Reportedly Has Biggest Month Ever For Active Users In A Game

3 years 4 months ago

Among Us has been 2020's biggest surprise hit, taking Twitch by storm and even getting some play time from US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Now, according to a report released by Nielsen's SuperData, it could be considered one of the most popular games ever in terms of active players.

The report shows that Among Us clocked over half a billion active users just in the month of November, which SuperData says makes it the most popular game ever by this metric. Despite these huge numbers, however, Among Us doesn't even crack the top ten games of the month by earnings, due to its low level of monetization. "The PC version (which has a $5 upfront price) accounted for the majority of revenue from August to November (64%)," the report adds. "Despite having an extremely small share of the total player base (3% in November)."

Cyberpunk 2077 Sells 13 Million Copies At Launch

3 years 4 months ago

Developer CD Projekt Red has announced a new sales figure for Cyberpunk 2077. The embattled RPG sold more than 13 million copies as of December 20, which makes it one of the most successful RPG launches of all time.

CD Projekt Red said the number covers sales across all platforms, and it also factors in "returns submitted by retail clients in brick-and-mortar as well as digital storefronts." From the wording of the news release, it sounds like 13 million is the number of copies sold, including returns, except for those filed to CDPR when this news release went out.

Here is the exact wording that CDPR used: "This figure represents the estimated volume of retail sales across all hardware platforms (factoring in returns submitted by retail clients in brick-and-mortar as well as digital storefronts), i.e. the 'sell-through' figure, less all refund requests e-mailed directly to the Company by the publication date of this report in the framework of the 'Help Me Refund' campaign."

Steam Winter Sale 2020 Is Live: Best Game Deals Available Right Now

3 years 4 months ago

As is always the case with Christmas approaching, Valve has kicked off the latest winter sale on Steam. 2020's edition features the usual array of discounts on thousands of games and DLC packs, making for an overwhelming selection to choose from. The Steam winter sale is live right now and runs until January 5 at 10 AM PT.

Make it through the standard server errors that are accompanying the sale's launch and you'll see it doesn't have a corresponding minigame or anything terribly in-depth to it, as some past Steam sales have. That said, you'll notice birds adorning the various hubs on the Steam store, and you can get "festive bird" stickers for use on Steam that celebrate various games. You can grab these from the Steam points shop.

But the real highlight of a Steam sale are the deals, and there is no shortage of them, including great new games released in 2020. Our Game of the Year, Half-Life: Alyx, is discounted to $45, although bear in mind you'll need a VR headset in order to play it. Other GameSpot Game of the Year nominees are on sale, including Hades for $20, Yakuza: Like a Dragon for $45, and Spiritfarer for $22.49.

Developer Treyarch has rolled out an update for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S that shuffles the game's multiplayer playlist and pushes out yet another double XP event for all players.

The update is now live and it makes a number of changes to the game. As previously promised, Treyarch is issuing a double battle pass XP event for all players until December 28. In addition to the double XP event, daily challenges have been added to Black Ops Cold War's multiplayer and Zombies modes. Other changes include playlist updates, such as bringing Face Off, which consists of 3v3 Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Kill Confirmed matches on Gunfight maps. Raid 24/7 is also live, as well as Nuketown Holiday 24/7, Prop Hunt, and Gunfight.

Dragon Ball FighterZ Adds Super Baby 2, SS4 Gogeta Soon

3 years 4 months ago

The last two characters of Dragon Ball FighterZ's third DLC character bundle have been revealed, and one of them is joining the game's roster in about a month's time.

Dragon Ball GT's Super Baby 2 is slated to drop on January 15. Previously released DLC characters for Dragon Ball FighterZ retail for anywhere between $3 and $6 USD. So while Bandai Namco hasn't specified Super Baby 2's price, he's likely to cost around the same as other characters. Alternatively, he can be acquired by purchasing the game's FighterZ Pass 3.

Rounding out FighterZ Pass 3 is Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta, the fusion of Super Saiyan 4 Goku and Vegeta, and another member from Dragon Ball GT's cast. Unlike Super Baby 2, SS4 Gogeta doesn't have a release date. He joins the rest of FighterZ Pass 3's roster, which includes the fusion Kefla, Ulta Instinct Goku, and the recently released Master Roshi. Bandai Namco shared a trailer showing the two characters in-game, which you can check out above.

Microsoft Flight Simulator VR Update Out Now, Adds Winter Weather Tracking

3 years 4 months ago

Microsoft Flight Simulator is a simulator in the classic sense, practically a teaching tool in its realism and attention to detail. But a new update adds even more verisimilitude, by letting you fly everything from puddle jumpers to jumbo jets while immersed in a VR headset.

An update on the Xbox blog announced the sim update 2, which makes the game work with a variety of VR headsets. Those include the Windows Mixed Reality headsets, along with the headsets from Oculus, Valve, and HTC. Just make sure you've updated to the latest version of Flight Simulator before you strap on your headset and take to the skies.

Flight Simulator already uses a first-person perspective with realistic dashboards and control panels for lots of aircraft, and actually taking off, flying, and landing your plane takes a high degree of skill. With the VR update, you'll have to manage all that and your airsickness.

Pokemon Sword And Shield 1.3.1 Update Out Now, Fixes A Few Bugs

3 years 4 months ago

Pokemon developer Game Freak has rolled out a new update for Pokemon Sword and Shield. This patch appears to be very minor, however, primarily resolving a handful of bugs.

According to the patch notes on Nintendo's support website, Sword and Shield's 1.3.1 update "fixed some issues for a better gameplay experience." The notes don't delve into any more detail beyond that, so it's not quite clear what has been fixed. If the update is not automatically installed, you'll need to highlight your game's icon on the Switch home screen, press the Plus button, and select Software Update to manually download the patch.

This marks Sword and Shield's first update since October's 1.3.0 patch, which added the games' Crown Tundra expansion. That is included alongside the titles' first DLC, The Isle of Armor, in the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass.

The PlayStation Store has kicked off its annual Holiday Sale, and it features many of 2020's most popular games, including PlayStation exclusives like The Last of Us Part II and Final Fantasy VII Remake. While most of the deals are on PS4 games, all of them are backwards-compatible with PS5, meaning you can potentially get benefits like faster loading times and higher frame rates or resolutions. New Dead Cells Update Adds A Katana, New Enemies

3 years 4 months ago

Dead Cells' latest free update is live now, just in time for players to dive back into the beloved roguelike over the holidays. The update adds new content--including the much-requested katana--as well as reworks and tweaks on existing systems.

While Dead Cells got its full release over two years ago, the side-scrolling roguelike still receives regular updates, and is in line for a brand new DLC set to launch early next year.

Epic Games Is At It Again With The FreeFortnite Merchandise

The latest in Epic Games' ongoing dispute with Apple and Google has seen the Fortnite developer team up with Samsung to send out a number of #FreeFortnite themed care packages to gaming journalists and influencers. Like its previous 1984-style parody video, the merch--and even the boxes they were packed in--reference iconic Apple imagery.

Epic Games previously invited fans to make and sell their own Free Fortnite merchandise, even providing a full asset pack of the campaign's Apple-spoofing imagery. It's unclear how many people actually took up the invitation, but Epic is now sending certain influencers merchandise of its own making.

The merch is bundled with a Samsung Tab S7 and a note explaining that Samsung's Galaxy Store is the only place where Fortnite is currently available on mobile.

Nintendo Boss Says Switch Is Entering "Midpoint" Of Its Lifecycle

3 years 4 months ago

Having launched almost four years ago, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser believes the Switch has finally entered the midpoint of its lifecycle.

In an extensive interview with Polygon, Bowser discussed the company's 2021 outlook, how well the Switch performed amidst the ongoing pandemic, and what the midpoint for both the standard Switch and more-affordable Switch Lite means for the platform's ecosystem. According to Bowser, it means the company will "really lean into both platforms" while continuing to call attention to the Switch's unique console-handheld hybrid nature.

"[T]he way we build games onto the platform, and the way partners build games onto the platform, is really what matters and the experience that you have when you play," Bowser said. "So that's what we'll continue to lean into as we go into really what will be the fifth year of Nintendo Switch. And as Mr. [Shuntaro] Furukawa [president of Nintendo] mentioned in his corporate management policy briefing, we believe we're just at the midpoint of this life cycle on this platform."

Cyberpunk 2077 Is Playable On Nintendo Switch Through A Google Stadia Workaround

3 years 4 months ago

It's no secret that playing Cyberpunk 2077, particularly on last-gen systems, can be messy, so imagining the game playing on Nintendo Switch sounds implausible. But a Nintendo enthusiast has found a way to get the open-world RPG running on Nintendo's console-handheld hybrid--and the process involves hacking the system to access Stadia.

YouTuber Nintendrew uploaded a video to his channel demonstrating how he got Cyberpunk 2077 to play on his hacked Nintendo Switch. He discusses the game's performance, which seems to run steadily at 720p when undocked and 1080p when connected to a TV, and how Stadia allows users to stream Cyberpunk 2077 to the system. There are a few required tools, like a Stadia account and payload injector, but Cyberpunk 2077 is apparently fully playable on Switch after downloading and installing a version of Google's Android operating system.

Once Android is installed, Switch players can download the Stadia app from the Play Store and start streaming Cyberpunk 2077. Both Joy-Con and Pro controllers are compatible with Cyberpunk 2077, with controller mapping being identical to its Xbox console inputs. And of course, once Stadia is installed on Nintendo Switch, a bunch of other AAA, non-Switch games--such as Destiny 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order--can be streamed to the system as well. It's worth noting that while Stadia isn't directly available on Switch, Nintendo has released a few titles through the cloud, including Remedy's Control and IO Interactive's Hitman 3.

Cyberpunk 2077 Modder Adds Ability To Change In-Game Hairstyle For PC

3 years 4 months ago

Cyberpunk 2077 has been mired in controversies since launch, but a brand-new Nexus Mod aims to bring some much-needed levity to the experience by giving PC players the ability to change their in-game hairstyle whenever and however many times as they want.

The mod, created by user woodbricks, grants players access to all the hairstyles available in Cyberpunk 2077. Once installed, players can swap between the 39 haircuts for both male and female characters. However, those who've customized their V with a totally bald cut cannot change it to any of the other 38. Additionally, while the mod is compatible with both genders, hairstyles won't neatly swap between the two due to head shape and character model.

There are specific instructions for changing V's hairstyle with this Nexus Mod. PC players will have to locate their save file, download and install a Hex editing program like this one, edit the file in question by changing V's hair to the corresponding Hex code of their choosing, and save. Relaunching the game after completing the steps is not necessary; players can simply load their save file and continuing playing Cyberpunk 2077 with their freshly cut V.

2020 is finally coming to a close, wrapping up what was certainly an unprecedented year for the video game industry. While Sony and Microsoft both ushered in next-generation consoles, the Nintendo Switch marched into its fourth year on the market with some great releases that helped sustain its impressive sales momentum.

Nintendo also put out some great titles this year, from an original Switch entry in the Paper Mario series to the record-smashing Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Stardew Valley 1.5 Update Out Now, Lets You Own A Beachfront Farm

3 years 4 months ago

The awaited 1.5 update for Stardew Valley has arrived on PC, and ahead of its release indie developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone outlined some of what we can expect from the big patch.

In a tweet, Barone highlighted a couple of key features for new farmers just starting out after the version 1.5 update goes live. Those include a new farm type, Beach Farm. According to an attached screenshot, sprinklers don't work on a beach farm, but it's great for foraging and fishing, and sometimes you'll a supply crate will randomly wash up ashore. There's also be a new Advanced Game Options menu, which lets you toggle aspects like your community center bundles, mine rewards, and whether monsters will spawn on your farm.

Barone followed up shortly after with an update that the patch is now live. He had said just recently that it could release on PC this year, followed by consoles early next year.

Genshin Impact Update 1.2 Patch Notes Reveal Tons Of New Content And Rewards

3 years 4 months ago

Genshin Impact's big 1.2 update is arriving on December 23, bringing with it a huge new area, a host of new rewards and content, and some well-overdue quality-of-life updates. The update will bring two new 5-star characters across two banners--first, the sword-wielding Geo alchemist Albedo, and later in January the Cryo archer Ganyu.

Developer Mihoyo has now revealed the event banner for Albedo, showing that 4-star characters Bennett, Fischl and Sucrose will all be easier to obtain while wishing on the "Secretum Secretorum." The new main character Albedo is a Geo sword user who seems to be designed for a support role.

Albedo's story quest "Princeps Cretaceus Chapter" will launch at the same time as his banner and will be a pre-requisite for the Dragonspine-centered The Chalk Prince and the Dragon event. Accordingly, the story quest will temporarily be available to all players above AR20 without the need for a story key. After the event, the level requirement will be raised to AR40 and a story key will be required.

Bungie Talks About Vault Of Glass Returning In Destiny 2

3 years 4 months ago

Destiny 2's big Beyond Light update may have started the process of retiring much of the game's old content, but Bungie is also bringing back some old favorites--starting with the original Destiny raid, Vault of Glass. In a new interview with Polygon, assistant game director Joe Blackburn has explained how he's working to make sure the new version of Vault of Glass plays just how you remember, despite the differences between Destiny and the current version of Destiny 2.

Blackburn said that the goal of the re-release is to make running Vault of Glass in Destiny 2 feel the same as it did when players got into it for the very first time. He explains why this means that some tweaks are necessary, rather than including the original version of the raid as a straight port.

"The guardians have become significantly stronger in this amount of time," Blackburn explains, saying that the raid team went back into the original raid to see how it played, before deciding that "we would smoke this with Destiny 2 weapons and armor mods."

Steam's 2020 Black Friday Sale Was Its Most Successful Ever

3 years 4 months ago

Steam runs a number of big seasonal sales each year, but it has revealed that the most recent--the Autumn Sale that coincided with the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend--was its biggest yet. The sale drew in new users to Steam, as well as a huge number of returning players.

While the sale exceeded previous events according to a number of benchmarks Steam tracks, the one it chose to highlight was a record amount of revenue going back to developers and publishers. The blog post says that, while it's difficult to quantify how many games are finding success on Steam, the data shows that there are more games than ever grossing at least $10,000, all the way up to $1,000,000.

Valve also reveals that just under a million players spent money on Steam for the first time during the Autumn Sale--which isn't too surprising in a year that has seen rapid increases in the number of people gaming on all devices, due to the pandemic keeping them inside. The peak number of concurrent players logging on for the sale also increased by around 7 million when compared to last year's Autumn Sale.

PUBG Mobile Hits 2 Million Players With The Ban Pan

3 years 4 months ago

The PUBG Mobile development team has been on a roll with its anti-cheat actions, as it has banned more than 2 million people over the course of a week. Dubbed the "Ban Pan," the latest anti-cheating report for the game says that nearly a third of all banned players had modified their character model, while about 15% of players were using aim hacks.

The accounts banned as part of the mass action are permanently suspended from using the game. Other reasons for the bans include x-ray vision hacks, speed hacks, and hacks that modify an area of damage. All of them threaten to undermine the competitive nature of a game that game that has more than 50 million daily users. That means the banned total equals roughly 4% of the total daily number, though the game has been downloaded more than 600 million times to date.

Best New PlayStation Games In 2020 By Score

3 years 4 months ago

2020 was a big year for PlayStation. As Sony prepared to launch the PS5 and usher in a new generation, developers were preparing to say goodbye to the last one with swan song games that pushed the PS4 hardware to its limit, and others transitioned to the PS5 with next-gen upgrades.

That made this an especially strong year for PS4 games, as exclusives like Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II showed off what the hardware can do. Meanwhile, some games like Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs Legion crossed between generations. And the PS5 itself got some of its own highly-regarded exclusives like Astro's Playroom and Demon's Souls.

We've compiled a list of the best-reviewed PlayStation games in 2020 below. For more of the year's best, be sure to check out our Best Games of 2020 and familiarize yourself with GameSpot's top 10 nominees.

Best New Xbox Games In 2020 By Score

3 years 4 months ago

2020 has been quite the year, and now that it's finally coming to a close, we figured it's the perfect time to look back at some of our favorite games. Our top 10 picks make up our Best Game of 2020 nominees list, but there were plenty of other wonderful gems that we liked. And many of those games released on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Below, we've rounded up GameSpot's best-reviewed Xbox games of 2020.

Now, remember, this list only includes the games for Xbox that GameSpot reviewed. We're only human and there aren't enough of us to cover literally every single game. This list is not designed to diminish other excellent games that were released on Xbox this year, such as Call of the Sea, Evan's Remains, and Coffee Talk (all of which you should go play, by the way); it just compiles the collection of games that we managed to publish a review for on the website that scored an 8/10 or higher. We've listed the games in alphabetical order.

Shigeru Miyamoto's Kids Were Big Sega Fans Growing Up

3 years 4 months ago

No one is more closely associated with Nintendo than Shigeru Miyamoto. "Mario's dad" and the creator of series like Donkey Kong and The Legend of Zelda has been with the company for decades, and his own children grew up with access to Nintendo's game library. That's why it's particularly amusing that they were also big Sega fans.

Speaking to The New Yorker, Miyamoto said that growing up, his children were big fans of Space Harrier and Out Run--two classics we've seen on numerous systems, including Sega Genesis. They both hold up fairly well today, and you can actually play them both on Nintendo Switch via the Sega Ages series.

Perhaps that Sega love came as a result of the house's game consoles being owned by Miyamoto himself rather than his kids.

Cyberpunk 2077 Save Data Could Be Corrupted If File Size Is Too Large

3 years 4 months ago

Especially if you are far along in the Cyberpunk 2077 storyline, you are going to want to monitor your save file size closely. Players are reporting that their save data is being corrupted after it goes beyond 8MB, and there isn't any way to recover the data if this happens.

Players on Reddit are discovering that, at least in some instances, their save files are corrupted and unrecoverable once they reach that 8MB mark. For those who have been crafting items extensively over the course of their playthrough, the file size can balloon, putting them at greater risk of having their data corrupted. It isn't affecting all players, and you seem to be more likely to corrupt your data if you've crafted literally thousands of items.

GOG support (GOG is owned by CD Projekt Red's parent company, CD Projekt) seemed to acknowledge that there was indeed a file size limit in a reply to a concerned player. The company said it may increase the save file size limit via a future patch but this would not revert already corrupted save data back to a useable state. It also recommended not using any item duplication glitches and loading a save file that hasn't made use of it yet. Because you can manually save, you can potentially keep a "safe" save file if you don't mind the risk of losing progress and reverting back to that file.
