King Of Fighters 15, Samurai Shodown Season Pass 3 Announcement Delayed

3 years 3 months ago

Developer and publisher SNK has announced that the reveal of King of Fighters XV and Samurai Shodown's Season Pass 3 has been postponed, though a reason hasn't been confirmed.

SNK had planned to officially unveil King of Fighter XV this week. The reveal of the latest entry in the King of Fighters series was to be followed by an announcement of the new characters coming to Samurai Shodown as part of the game's Season Pass 3 bundle. However, the company said it will "inform our fans as soon as the new date and time has been confirmed."

King of Fighters XV was teased in December, with SNK calling it the "most ambitious KOF yet." The studio shared no gameplay at the time. King of Fighters creative director Eisuke Ogura revealed King of Fighters XIV newcomer Shun'ei is the franchise's latest protagonist. As such, Shun'ei has a new outfit (shown off in some concept art), as well as an overhauled moveset.

Samsung Announces New 8K And 4K TVs With Drastically Improved Picture Quality

3 years 3 months ago

Ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show next week, Samsung has revealed its new line of 4K and 8K TVs set to launch later in 2021.

All the models announced today make use of brand new QLED technology that Samsung is branding "Neo QLED." The biggest benefit is that Samsung has managed to reduce the size of the LEDs that act as the backlight in its display, allowing for drastically more dimming zones and the reduction of blooming. Traditional LED displays require backlighting for brightness, but the size of the LEDs has often led to distracting light bleed in scenes where only small portions of the image are overly bright or dark. This is one of the biggest benefits of OLEDs, which are self-emissive.

According to The Verge, Samsung is promising up to "up to almost 30,000 tiny LEDs" and "up to 2,500 dimming zones," which will make backlighting in this year's models noticeably better than those from 2020. Samsung announced to 8K models (the QN900A and QN800A) as well as numerous 4K models (QN95A, QN90A, and the QN85A). The number of dimming zones does decrease with less expensive models, but Samsung hasn't detailed each individually yet.

Earth Is Spinning Unusually Fast, And We Might Have To Delete A Second

3 years 3 months ago

2020 was a rough year for many of us, but there was another crisis going on that you probably weren't even aware of: a time crisis. Unfortunately, no light guns will save us here. According to TimeAndDate.com, the Earth spun faster than in 2020 than in any other time in the past 50 years, with the 28 shortest days since 1960.

As reported in the Telegraph, experts and astronomers warn that timekeepers may need to introduce a negative leap second in order to stay accurate. Leap seconds--which are used to accommodate differences between atomic time and less-precise solar time--have previously been used to solve such issues. However, a leap second in 2012 wreaked havoc across the Internet, with Reddit, Yelp, Mozilla, and others reporting Y2K-esque crashes due to the shift.

Some experts have called for an end to leap seconds entirely, opining that they are a relic of a past age, since much of the world relies on atomic time today. The World Radiocommuncation Conference may end up abolishing the practice in 2023, though it's unclear how likely this is to happen. Earth's rotational speed varies considerably due to the motion of tides, the atmosphere, and the planet's core, as well as other factors, such as snowfall on mountains.

Outriders Delayed Again, Demo Coming In February

3 years 3 months ago

Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly's new game, Outriders, has been delayed again. The Square Enix-published shooter will no longer release in February, and is now scheduled for release on April 1. That is not a joke.

"We will spend this extra time fine tuning the game and focusing on delivering a fantastic experience at launch. Thanks for hanging tight a little longer. We appreciate your patience!" the developer said in its message posted on Twitter.

While Outriders will no longer release in February, the developers are releasing a free demo for the game on February 25 that showcases its first few hours. All four character classes will be available in the demo for both single-player and co-op. Additionally, progress from the demo will carry forward to the full game, People Can Fly said.

Monster Hunter World's Latest Patch Fixes Delivery Quest Glitch

3 years 3 months ago

If you have been playing Monster Hunter World: Iceborne lately and have been running into issues with a bugged delivery quest, we have good news for you! Iceborne version 15.11's patch update is now live and will squash those bugs.

In the previous version of Iceborne, 15.10, delivery quests would disappear from the list at the Resource Center when playing on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles in offline mode. This bug made it impossible to complete these quests, which was a pretty significant drag on the Monster Hunter experience. If you play in online mode, those quests should reappear anyway, but with the 15.11 update, even players who want to remain offline will no longer see delivery quests up and vanish on them.

The bug was originally discovered by Twitter user JalBagel, a Monster Hunter speedrunner, during a charity stream back in early December. He noticed that while playing with an offline mod on Steam, the delivery quests were disappearing. This was noticeably strange since JalBagel knew that prior to the game's Movie Event Quest update, delivery quests were not going missing.

Call Of Duty: Warzone Patch Nerfs The DMR 14

3 years 3 months ago

Activision has followed through on its promise to nerf the DMR, which was causing some issues and headaches in the battle royale game Call of Duty: Warzone.

The newest patch is now live, and it reduces the headshot damage of the DMR 14 while also increasing recoil to deliver an overall nerf to the weapon. The Type 63 has also been nerfed with the same adjustments through the patch notes.

The Mac-10, meanwhile, sees its headshot multiplier decreased, while players using dual pistols will discover more hip fire spread and a decreased damage range. All of these nerfs and adjustments are specific to Warzone, not Black Ops Cold War.

Netflix Shutting Down Service On Wii U, 3DS

3 years 3 months ago

You'll have two fewer options to watch Netflix starting later this year. The company has announced plans to stop supporting the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS starting on June 30, 2021. And if you didn't already have the app on those devices, now it's too late.

In a statement, Nintendo gave word that Netflix removed its app from the Wii U and 3DS eShops on December 31, 2020. If you downloaded it in the past, you can re-download the applications and use them until support is discontinued on June 30.

Netflix functionality is mostly ubiquitous, so you should have no trouble finding other devices with which to watch the service. But the pending absence of it on Nintendo devices is a reminder that years into the Nintendo Switch lifecycle, Netflix still hasn't come to the console. The console/handheld hybrid does support some other video streaming apps, such as Netflix competitor Hulu.

With Flash Games Dead, One Developer Is Saving Theirs With A Game Boy Port

3 years 3 months ago

If you're old enough to remember the early 2000s, you probably have fond memories of playing Flash games to while away the hours at your job or at school. As many longtime Flash fans know well by this point, Adobe officially halted support for the longtime multimedia platform back on December 31, citing security flaws and the existence of better tech. However, one prolific Flash developer took an unusual step to preserve their work: porting it to the original Game Boy.

That game is Anthony Lavelle's IndestructoTank, and you might have hazy memories of it from your youth, as I do. It's a grounded shoot 'em up similar to Defender or Moon Patrol, only your tank is completely invincible, and your goal is to bounce onto your enemies' heads continuously so you don't run out of fuel. The Game Boy port obviously limits the game's color palette, and the on-screen action is a little bit tighter, but it plays just as I remember.

Though the ROM will work on a real Game Boy, for the rest of us, Lavelle has provided an emulator that works in your web browser on his Itch.io page. As a whole, Lavelle exhibits a sense of humor about the demise of Flash in a recent AMA, but it's clear that he still has a lot of love for the platform. Arguably best-known for the puzzle game Shift, he says that Flash is the reason that he got into making games, and there will never be a tool quite like it.

Amazon's Top 10 Selling Games Of 2020 Were Almost All Nintendo Games

3 years 3 months ago

Amazon has revealed which video games were its top-sellers in 2020, and in a year that saw no shortage of excellent titles on offer, Nintendo proved to be a dominant force.

Out of the top 10, Nintendo claimed eight spots on the list which saw Animal Crossing: New Horizons take first place. In a year where many people were forced to stay at home during the coronavirus pandemic, the relaxing island getaway game proved to be a winner in not one but two slots.

Animal Crossing's physical edition was joined by demand for digital downloads sold through Amazon, with that version of the game also ending up in fourth place. Super Mario 3D All-Stars came in second place, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe took the third spot, and Smash Bros. Ultimate claimed the fifth position on the list.

Graphics Cards Are All Set To Become More Expensive Very Soon

3 years 3 months ago

If the ongoing supply issues and resurgence in cryptocurrency mining isn't enough to make grabbing a new graphics card challenging, prices for them might soon be increasing in the US to make stock even harder to come by.

The price increase might soon affect numerous GPU manufacturers, as waivers that kept trade tariffs at bay have now expired. President Trump instigated a trade war with China in 2018, which would've increased GPU prices had companies not applied for waivers to prevent it. Those waivers expired, however, this month, meaning tariffs between 7.5% to 25% can now be applied to all PC hardware.

ASUS is the only company that has acknowledged this right now, writing to customers to explain why they might encounter higher than expected prices on products.

Madden 21 CPU Teams Are About To Get Better At Drafting

3 years 3 months ago

It's one of the longest running jokes for Madden fans. A CPU team with a veteran quarterback steps up to the mic during the first round of the draft and picks another QB. The team is filled with holes and they choose not to fill any of them.

Madden CPU AI has always been flawed and Madden 21 is no different--but EA hopes to change that. A new update is bringing improved QB draft logic alongside other changes to the only licensed football game.

"We have added new logic checks that CPU teams will use to guide whether they should even be interested in drafting a QB when they’re on the clock in Round 1," EA said in a statement sent to GameSpot. "Now, teams will evaluate their roster and previous draft picks of the last two years to keep teams from replacing players too soon."

Microsoft Tried To Acquire Nintendo, Square, And Midway Years Ago

3 years 3 months ago

2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the Xbox, and to celebrate the occasion, Bloomberg spoke with more than 20 people involved with the creation of the console. It's a fascinating read that is stuffed with interesting insight, one part of which was that Microsoft wanted to collaborate with Nintendo, and potentially even buy the Japanese company.

Former head of business development at Microsoft, Bob McBreen, said Microsoft reached out to a number of companies to discuss an acquisition many years ago, the first of which was Electronic Arts. They said "no thanks," according to McBreen. Nintendo also declined to get acquired, and the meeting apparently did not go so well.

Former Xbox executive Kevin Bachus said then-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told senior staff they needed to travel to Japan to speak to Nintendo about a potential sale.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Adds New Abilities If You Disconnect From The Internet

3 years 3 months ago

Assassin's Creed Valhalla players spotted several new abilities within the game's Bear, Raven, and Wolf skill trees a few weeks ago, which then quickly disappeared. The first node allowed for players to "let the fates guide your path" and automatically allocate skill points into any empty slots.

The other nodes revealed new abilities that players could acquire: The Raven tree added the Assassin Carry ability, a skill that lets you automatically pick up a body after performing an assassination.

The Bear tree added Fight Ready, which guarantees a full adrenaline slot at the start of a fight and the Wolf tree's new Arrow looter skill increases your chances of finding extra arrow ammo on the bodies of dead enemy archers. None of these new abilities were mentioned in the December update patch notes, and some players reported seeing them for an instant before they vanished.

Wasteland 3 Studio InXile Appears To Be Working On First-Person RPG

3 years 3 months ago

Role-playing game developer InXile Entertainment is perhaps best known for Wasteland 2 and Wasteland 3, which helped to inject new life into the CRPG genre as other series focused more on action elements. However, the studio has another project cooking--a AAA-level first-person RPG--that could reach a wider audience.

Twitter user Klobrille pointed out that InXile is currently looking for an art director on a "next-generation role-playing game" that will use Unreal Engine. A separate listing for a gameplay designer explicitly mentions first-person perspective, rather than the isometric and zoomed-out views we've seen in many of the studio's other games.

Mario Kart Live And Lego Mario Combine To Make A Toyetic Mega-Game

3 years 3 months ago

Nintendo mascot Mario appeared in two major toy lines last year, but one enterprising tinkerer found a way to combine them. The AR racer Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit and the Lego Mario line of building toys weren't meant to work together, but a clever Redditor found a way.

Reddit user studioplayfool strapped the Lego Mario toy to the back of a Mario Kart Live kart. Since the Lego Mario toy functions by scanning barcodes on the other Lego toys, the mash-up used those same barcodes in order to track obstacles for the kart. The result is a Mario Kart Live track that works with the Lego Mario timer and awards coins for taking out goombas and question blocks along the way.

It's very impressive, but on top of the flashy video, studioplayfool provided a link to open-source files, including instructions and bar codes, for creating your own Mario Kart Live / Lego Mario mash-ups. It even includes a papercraft "saddle" for Lego Mario to ride around in.

Xbox Asks Players If They Want PS5 Controller's Features

3 years 3 months ago

The Xbox Series X|S uses a controller that is remarkably similar to the Xbox One controller, with it even being compatible with both console generations. However, it lacks the fancy features of the PS5's DualSense controller, and it appears Microsoft could be considering some sort of upgrade in the future--or it's at least asking players if they'd want that.

Spotted by TechRadar, a survey being sent out to certain Xbox Series X|S users asks a number of questions about their thoughts on the console thus far, including if it feels faster than previous systems and feels like a complete next-gen upgrade. But it also mentions PlayStation by name, asking if players are aware of PlayStation controllers' features and whether they want them on the Xbox controller.

Those features include motion control, advanced haptic feedback, and, most notably, the adaptive triggers on the PS5's DualSense. These allow for variable response depending on the game and situation, adding increased tension or rumble. They can simulate the force necessary to pull back a bow or even the recoil from a gun, and are showcased heavily in the pre-installed game Astro's Playroom.

The Best Persona Songs On Spotify You Can't Overlook

3 years 3 months ago

There's just nothing like a Persona soundtrack. Lead composer Shoji Meguro and others such as Atsushi Kitajoh from Atlus' sound team have churned out so many hits that stand out as fantastic songs, but are also able to perfectly communicate the emotions that you feel in the moments they're played. And with each entry, Atlus finds new ways to incorporate different music genres into their soundtracks, making each game carry a distinct vibe and sound. Now, a good chunk of that work is available on Spotify.

While many fans are familiar with the bangers and jams from the more popular mainline games (let's say, Persona 5, Persona 4, and Persona 3), there is more to dig into beyond the big hits. For this particular article, I want to highlight a few standouts from other Persona entries that may not have the same spotlight, but absolutely deserve that level of recognition.

Keep in mind, there's nothing wrong with not being familiar with every entry in the series. It's okay! There's no shame in that! I just want to spread the good word, and maybe let folks know about other songs that might become their new favorite Persona tracks. It's also worth noting that music from Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 and 5 Dancing, and the original Persona are not on Spotify at the moment. You can find a playlist at the bottom of this article that includes the songs mentioned here (and a few more).

Destiny 2 Coup De Grâce Mission's High Celebrant Rewards May Not Be Dropping

3 years 3 months ago

The latest weekly reset in Destiny 2 has brought a new quest, Coup de Grâce, where you kill High Celebrant, capping off an ongoing story thread in Season 12. However, Bungie has alerted players that rewards may not be dropping as they should.

"We are investigating an issue where some rewards are not dropping from completion of the High Celebrant mission," Bungie said in a tweet. It didn't offer any further specifics, but players on the Destiny subreddit have reported possibly related issues. That includes not receiving the promised Exotic ship, although that may be due to further, as-of-yet unavailable steps that still need to be completed.

Whatever the case, you may want to hold off on completing High Celebrant, though Bungie will hopefully be able to retroactively hand out the correct rewards to those who finish it in the meantime. If you want to try your hand at it anyway--and who can blame you, with Destiny 2's story being in such an interesting place--you can talk to Crow on Tangled Shores to get started.

Apex Legends Fight Night Update Makes Welcome Ring Closure Change

3 years 3 months ago

The latest event in Apex Legends, Fight Night, is now live. The new limited-time event adds a Pathfinder-themed town takeover to Olympus, a brand-new mode, over two dozen legendary and epic cosmetics, and makes several quality of life adjustments to the in-match meta. Of note, there's a particularly interesting adjustment to how ring closure works.

In order to address the chaotic nature of the last few fights in a match, developer Respawn is tweaking how the ring closes for rounds five and six. Ring 5 is now a bit bigger, expanded from a 1500 unit radius to a 2000 unit radius, though it still closes at the same rate. And Ring 6 is now the final ring of every match, closing over the course of 100 seconds.

This change completely removes Rings 7 and 8, which were traditionally only seen in a handful of matches anyway because most squads were killed off and a winner decided by Rings 5 or 6. But when multiple teams did manage to survive that long, those final rings were always a cluster of character abilities and shotgun/submachine gun fire--any squad with a surviving Caustic and his ultimate ability at the ready was practically guaranteed to take the win.

New Mad Catz Gaming Mouse Offers Precision Aim Button And Barrel Scroll Wheel

A new year means a new slate of PC gaming accessories, and one of the first announcements comes from peripheral maker Mad Catz. The RAT DWS doesn't currently have a price or release date, but we'll likely learn more soon as it starts shipping in February.

In addition to the new mouse switch and huge battery life, the RAT DWS also features a precision aim button. Mad Catz hasn't said exactly how this works, but it likely lowers the mouse's sensitivity for fine-tuning those long-distance sniper shots. On top of that it comes with a barrel scroll wheel that should work well for switching weapons, an adjustable 16K DPI optical sensor, and 14 programmable buttons.

Developer Rockfish Games is launching Everspace 2 in both Steam Early Access and the GOG Games in Development program later this month. Starting on January 18, you can dive into the space loot shooter for $40 USD / £32 / €37 and experience what looks to be a pretty substantial chunk of the game.

"After multiple rounds of community testing by some 2,000 players, and great feedback from various gaming outlets and content creators on the closed beta, Everspace 2 is ready for early access," Rockfish Games CEO and co-founder Michael Schade said in a press release. "We can't wait to receive feedback on the initial release version from space game enthusiasts on Steam and GOG."

This early access version of the game will be good for about 25 hours of gameplay, composed of a story-driven campaign that lasts for a little over 12 hours and then several side quests. Everspace 2 is scheduled to remain in early access for the rest of the year, officially launching for PC in 2022 at an increased price.

Cyberpunk 2077 Bunnyhopping Is Faster Than Any Car You Can Find

3 years 3 months ago

Cyberpunk 2077 launched in rough shape, and even though developer CD Projekt Red has addressed some issues with various hotfix patches the reality is that the open-world RPG still has numerous issues. One such issue allows you to propel yourself across the highways faster than any vehicle, and it's already being put to good use.

Bunnyhopping shouldn't be unfamiliar to you if you've watch a speedrun or two. With careful input and care for momentum conservation, players can turn a simple forward hop into a cascade of acceleration that sometimes never hits a ceiling. Cyberpunk 2077 doesn't go that far, but it's clear from some videos (via Rock Paper Shotgun) that you can build up a ridiculous amount of speed on foot as V.

In a city filled with cybernetic limbs, having characters move this fast doesn't seem as out of the ordinary as it might in other games. Yet it's clearly not a method of movement the game was designed for. Despite that, it's become a big part of the blossoming speedrunning scene the game has already fostered, with improvements allowing for the technique to be used without any special augmentations required.

Minecraft Earth Shutting Down, Citing Coronavirus Pandemic

3 years 3 months ago

The AR game Minecraft Earth will be shutting down this summer, Mojang has announced. In a statement, the studio explained that the coronavirus pandemic had hampered key components of the game, forcing it to move its resources to other projects.

"Minecraft Earth was designed around free movement and collaborative play--two things that have become near impossible in the current global situation," Mojang said on the Minecraft blog. "As a result, we have made the difficult decision to re-allocate our resources to other areas that provide value to the Minecraft community and to end support for Minecraft Earth in June 2021."

A final update to the game, releasing today, will make some changes to facilitate playing indoors, while also removing monetization hooks. The update will remove all real-money transactions, grant some free character creator items, drastically reduce ruby costs, and reduce the time and resources needed for crafting items.
