Valve dev apologises for banning Dota 2 player over gameplay dispute

3 years 5 months ago

We've all been there - a match where something's gone wrong, or you end up frustrated with your teammates. But I doubt you've ever had the power to get someone banned over a gameplay disagreement, and it seems one Valve employee was unable to restrain themselves from doing so, as Firewatch co-creator Sean Vanaman has now apologised for giving out an unwarranted manual ban.

The situation began when Dota 2 player minijuanjohndoe posted on Reddit claiming they'd been sent to low priority - essentially a temporary matchmaking penalty - simply for suggesting a tactic the Valve employee didn't like (via Dot Esports). "So can employees just send you to low priority for telling the team to let mid tower go and he just thinks its a bad idea?," minijuanjohndoe asked, having discovered he'd been bickering with a Valve employee during their argument over tactics. minijuanjohndoe provided an image of their behaviour score to prove their innocence, and later gave the name of the player who had given them the penalty - Vanaman.

Black Friday's best 4K TV deal is on the LG CX OLED

3 years 5 months ago

When it came time to choose our top 4K TV for HDR gaming, there was only one real option: the LG CX OLED. It boasts impressive contrast, low input lag and pixel response times and support for the latest technologies - including the HDMI 2.1 standard that allows 4K 120Hz HDR gameplay. The 55-inch CX has now dropped by £400 to its lowest-ever price of £1299 - making it the perfect companion for the next-gen Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Here's why we think this TV is so good, where to find it and how much cheaper it's likely to get.

Update: November 23. Black Friday has begun and this is still the best deal we've found on a top 4K HDR TV. The CX OLED really ticks all the boxes for gamers on PS5, Xbox Series X and PC. Original article continues below:

First of all, let's cover where this deal is available. We've spotted the £1299 price at Amazon, John Lewis and Currys. Currys and John Lewis both include a five-year guarantee as standard, but John Lewis also offers accidental damage insurance - including burn-in damage - for £140, making it the best place to buy if you want the extra reassurance.

Humble Choice Premium is 45% off for Black Friday

3 years 5 months ago

New subscribers who start a year of Humble Choice Premium from the Humble Bundle website can get 45% off for Black Friday, reducing the price from £142.99 to £81.99 for the first year itself.

For those who don't know, Humble Choice Premium is a PC subscription service that allows players to pick a series of digital games to keep each month from a pool of 10 games or more. These range from small indie games to big AAA installments, but the amount you get to pick depends on the subscription plan you're on.

Fortunately, Premium is one of the best options, giving players the option to keep 9 of those games, as well as access to the Humble Trove (an online database of DRM-free games you can download for free), and a 20% discount on any other game you buy via Humble Bundle. If you need any more details, you can see them explained here.

Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay has already leaked on the internet

3 years 5 months ago

We're still several weeks out from Cyberpunk 2077's new release date of 10th December, but it seems someone has already managed to get their hands on a copy, as 20 minutes of gameplay has spilled onto the internet.

While I can't say the stream itself is of brilliant quality - the two people talking over the footage seem like they've been smoking something, to be honest - but it does give you an idea of what the start of Cyberpunk 2077 will look like. The streamers rush through the character creation features, help a mechanic fix his car, talk to a sheriff and then head out into the wastelands surrounding Night City to fix a radio tower. Riveting stuff.

It looks like the whole thing was played on a PS4, although it's hard to definitively say whether the game was played on a base PS4 or PS4 Pro, as the feed isn't of particularly good quality. If you want to watch the whole thing, you can find a host of mirror videos on ResetEra - but frankly I'd recommend turning the audio off, or simply waiting a few more weeks to experience it for yourself.

Titanfall surprise launches on Steam - is met with immediate "Mostly Negative" reception

3 years 5 months ago

UPDATE 23RD NOV 2020: Respawn appears to be sorting out Titanfall's rough launch on Steam.

Late on Sunday the developers issued an audio issue patch, which fixes the awful audio issues the game had at launch. I've tested Titanfall on Steam this morning and confirm the audio is now as it should be. "Thanks for all your patience," reads a note.

Meanwhile, while some are still reporting matchmaking issues, I've found the game relatively stable since Sunday, and I've been able to complete the training. It looks like Respawn is getting on top of Titanfall's issues, and its "Mostly Negative" Steam user review rating has improved to "Mixed".

The best launch titles ever: Tetris on Game Boy

3 years 5 months ago

This week it seemed appropriate to look back at some of our favourite launch titles ever. And we're starting with a classic.

One of the weird things about Tetris is that, even if you ignore the incremental additions to the game over the years, like the hold space and hard and soft drops, each version of Tetris really feels different. Different in a way that is hard to pin down, as if each machine is haunted by a different ghost.

Glowing green and letting out a surprising digital raspberry whenever you lose, the Game Boy's Tetris may be the most characterful - a wilful, often cruel Tetris, and rightly so. After all, this version, bundled with Nintendo's handheld masterpiece, has probably introduced more people to Alexei Pajitnov's beautiful game than any other.

You can now transfer your Marvel's Spider-Man PS4 save data to Remastered on PS5

3 years 5 months ago

Insomniac Games has just dropped an update for Marvel's Spider-Man to enable players to import their PS4 suits and saves to Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered.

When news broke that players wouldn't be able to import their save data from the original game, Insomniac promptly responded to complaints by promising it would work to get the update to players "around Thanksgiving" (which is 26th November this year).

"Just to be clear. You must use the PS4 game to export your save," community director, James Stevenson, confirmed on Twitter earlier today. "Remastered cannot see a save until it is exported by the PS4 game. This is the way."

Mediatonic has revealed the first glimpse of Fall Guys' all-new season 3.

And when I say glimpse, I really do mean glimpse; the zoomed-in shot doesn't give away much other than the game's signature colour palette and the underside of... well, I'm not sure, quite honestly.

The knockout battle royale already has a wide and surprising selection of tools to send us hurtling off into the pink slime, but - to me, anyway - this looks a little like a hot-pink yoyo besides the corner of a salmon-coloured cube. Curiouser and curiouser, eh?

Kokiri Greens, Sega Blue Skies, and they've changed the shadows in Crystal Chronicles

3 years 5 months ago

Have you played that YouTube game, where you scan through endless videos of the original Crystal Chronicles on GameCube, clicking and holding the TV remote buttons, dragging back and forth, trying to work out what exactly had changed in the opening level River Belle Path? It's good fun!

You have to get used to the quick acceleration of that scanning pimple along the time bar, but once you've got it down it feels good, and the buttons on my Sony remote have a pleasingly matte and rubbery top-feel, then a satisfyingly crisp click to them. Click-and-hold, then a quick release! This time, on a good comparison video of the newly released remastered Crystal Chronicles. And I knew it. Not only does the GameCube one have darker, richer cloud shadows that dapple and drift across the landscape, but it also has a whole layer of smudgy shadow cast by its trees and paths and walls. The atmosphere's all changed. In the waterfall clearing where you fight the crab boss, originally it was moodily half-eclipsed in a darkness cast by the surrounding trees, whereas in the remaster it's all just limply even. I think the lighting in general is different, the whole thing a little paler, maybe a little cooler? Username 'Rami' in the YouTube comments agrees!:

the PS4 version looks nice, but the lighting is a lot cooler than the GameCube. If it were tinted with more of a greenish-yellow, just slightly, I think it would be quite perfect. (o^^o).

EA have announced their Black Friday deals for 2020 and they're definitely worth a gander.

First up, sports fans are in for a treat, with Fifa 21, Madden 21, NHL 21 and UFC 4 all reduced. During these challenging times, I think we could all do with slotting a screamer in your opponent's net in Fifa, followed by perhaps the odd-rage quit or two.

"When creating our representation of the city we wanted to include as many landmarks as we could to add to the sense of immersion," James Stevenson, Insomniac's community director, told Game Informer.

As F-Zero turns 30, our fingers are still crossed for a triumphant return on Nintendo Switch

F-Zero turns 30 years old today.

Nintendo's famous sci-fi racing series made its debut on the Super Famicom in Japan on 21st November 1990. It was a huge success, and spawned multiple sequels.

I was a huge fan of F-Zero on the SNES (a year and a half later!). I was blown away by the sense of speed as well as the visuals, which were powered by the SNES' Mode 7 tech. F-Zero felt 3D to me at a time when I only thought of video games as these 2D experiences.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's first big patch takes aim at the FFAR1, sniper rifles and Scorestreaks

3 years 5 months ago

Treyarch has released Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War's first big patch - and it makes some significant weapon balance changes.

First in the firing line is the FFAR1 assault rifle, which has been nerfed. It now has increased recoil, max damage reduced by 3.5 per cent (28 to 27), and max damage range reduced by 34 per cent (38m to 25m). That's a significant nerf to one of the most popular guns in the game at launch.

Meanwhile, Treyarch has nerfed all sniper rifles by adjusting sprint to fire times "to account for early blend/interruption allowed via animation system". The developer has also adjusted movement speed impact when firing sniper rifles to intended values "to make each shot feel more powerful". And finally on snipers, barrel attachments have been fine-tuned to improve idle sway "to provide a unique feel on each gun".

The week I went to Art Sqool

3 years 5 months ago

I had a friend once whose father was an artist. He had a gallery for a bit, and had done a stark, mesmerising painting of a tiger that my friend hung in his living room. I close my eyes and I can still see that tiger, the paint piled up thick on the fur, the frightening energy of a beast frozen in movement, one paw raised, eyes fixed on the rest of us, that bland and deadly tiger confidence purring deep inside. "Did your dad like William Blake?" I asked. "YES!" said my friend. "It's that tiger! How did you know?" How could you not know? That's art I guess.

His dad had gone to art school in the fifties. Back then, I remember my friend explaining, for the first few weeks of art school you learned how to draw a circle. "Just a circle?" I asked, but there was no just about it. You had to learn how to draw a circle freehand. The circle had to be perfect. It took weeks. This was the foundation. Art school, I learned, back in the fifties, seemed whimsical, but when you tried the whimsy out for yourself with a pad and pen, you discovered it was actually a sheer form of rigour.

That's art school, then. But what about Art Sqool, which I have been attending for the last few days? Art Sqool is a game by the artist Julian Glander that has been out on PC and Mac for a few years, but which has just found its perfect home on the Switch. In Art Sqool you go to Art Sqool. Your teacher is a neural network. There are projects. You wander a campus. All that's missing really are those huge folders art students carry around that seem to act like rudders whenever it's windy out.

Raise rapidly mutating dogs in ex-Sims 4 dev's gloriously weird pet sim Wobbledogs

3 years 5 months ago

What is a dog but a wobble with infinite potential? That's the question Wobbledogs - a wonderfully odd pet sim of rapidly mutating proportions - is possibly pondering as it prepares to wobble its weird pet sim self into Steam early access next year.

Wobbledogs is the work of Tom Astle, a former gameplay engineer on The Sims 4, and lets players loose in a world of physically simulated - but crucially, and slightly terrifyingly - rapidly mutating dogs. As such, while dogs start out in a broadly familiar form, they'll quickly take on strange new shapes and behaviours as their evolutionary lines advance.

"Dogs have highly variable bodies controlled by a simulated genetics system," explains Wobbledogs' newly launched Steam page, "As they age, they periodically enter a pupal state and physically mutate. The foods they eat fill their guts with different flora [that] influence the dogs' mutations, letting you craft and mold them to fit your own idea of canine (im)perfection!".

The mystery of Demon's Souls remake's enigmatic new door has been solved

3 years 5 months ago

Shortly after the arrival of developer Bluepoint's Demon's Souls remake on PS5, players discovered an enigmatic new addition not found in From Software's seminal 2009 action-RPG: a steadfastly locked door where one hadn't been before. But now, after some swift communal thinkery, the puzzle has been cracked, the door is open, and its secrets have been revealed.

But first a quick recap for the those latecomers at the back; players located Demon's Souls' mysterious new door in World 1-3, squirrelled away at the top of a staircase hidden behind an illusory wall - itself obscured by a mountain of rubbish at the end of an unassuming corridor.

After a few exploratory failures, the community latched onto the theory that the perpetually locked door might be related to an item newly introduced in Demon's Souls PS5 - the Gold Coin. It seemed especially plausible given that developer Bluepoint's previous remake, Shadow of Colossus, also included a secret door requiring the accumulation of coins to unlock.

Cyberpunk 2077 gets new ray tracing trailer and updated PC requirements

3 years 5 months ago

Earlier this week brought first footage of Cyberpunk 2077 running on consoles, and now there's new footage of developer CD Projekt's open-world RPG on running on PC with all the settings cranked right up, as seen on Nvidia's RTX 30-series GPUs - which means ray tracing all over the shop. And if you're curious to know what sort of PC you'll need to even come close to these visuals, there's an updated list of PC requirements to peruse.

If it's eye candy you want, though, the Nvidia-branded video is the place to be, with three of CD Projekt's developers - Marcin Gollent, Jakub Knapik, and Miles Tost - talking through the boost Night City's atmosphere receives thanks to the likes of ray traced reflections, diffuse illumination, ambient occlusion and shadows, and DLSS.

The end result, to my eyes at least, looks breathtaking at times, whether in the striking contrast between the dusty, sunbleached tones of Night City by day and the vibrant chaos of colour after sundown, or the blaze of reflective surfaces seen when the rain begins to fall.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla has a surprisingly thoughtful Lord of the Rings Easter egg

3 years 5 months ago

You've probably seen some of the early-game Easter eggs in Assassin's Creed Valhalla by now: most notably the Harry Potter house in Lunden, and the tribute to Keith Flint and The Prodigy in Essex. But later in the game you may well stumble across a Lord of the Rings reference - and it's an Easter egg with a surprising amount of depth.

On the west side of the in-game version of Gloucester (or "Glowecestre"), you'll stumble upon a community of pagans living in moss-covered homes, and in one of these is a note of some significance. "One of the little folk asked me to make the door smaller, as he wants to keep unruly houseguests from his house," the note reads. "After the nonsense with the druid last fall, I can see his point."

Given the placement of the note in an area that looks like Hobbiton, I think it's safe to assume the druid mentioned in the letter is supposed to be Gandalf, the "little folk" hobbits, and the one complaining is Bilbo Baggins. Oh, and there's also a ring placed on top of the envelope - just in case you hadn't already cottoned on at that point. You can't pick the ring up, but frankly there's enough going on in Valhalla without the need for an epic quest to destroy the one ring.

Capcom fixes Devil May Cry 5's 120Hz support for PlayStation 5

3 years 5 months ago

Capcom has issued a patch for Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, addressing problematic support for 120Hz unique to the PlayStation 5 version of the game - as reported in prior Digital Foundry coverage. The issue in a nutshell is this: if your TV supports 120Hz, the PS5 version of the game hard-set the console to run at that refresh rate - even if you weren't using the 120H frame-rate mode. This presented several problems, the most notable being that many 4K TVs only support 120Hz at 1080p or 1440p, meaning that DMC5's 4K-specific modes would produce a downscaled output.

Even those with the latest HDMI 2.1 displays capable of running full 4K at 120Hz would have issues with the game: Devil May Cry 5 would then run with an unlocked frame-rate, with the game often running in excess of 60 frames per second. While this was great for 'benchmarking' the game, for seeing the RE engine running fully unleashed until it hit system limits, the user experience was not so good owing to unwanted judder. The unlocked nature of the game applied equally to both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, but owners of the Microsoft machine could dip into the console display settings and turn off 120Hz support, capping frame-rate to 60fps and producing an overall smoother experience.

And there, on the wall by the carriage door, is a Doritos advert.
