It takes too damn long to level up weapons in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

3 years 5 months ago

I've spent a lot of time in Nuketown lately.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War got its version of the fan-favourite competitive multiplayer map this week, alongside a Nuketown 24/7 playlist, and I've jumped in each evening since to enjoy the close quarters chaos.

But there's another reason why I've set up shop in Nuketown: playing it is the only way I'm going to get anywhere with the Cold War grind.

Complete Bit.Trip series headed to Nintendo Switch

3 years 5 months ago

Surprise! The six-part Bit.Trip series arrives on Nintendo Switch next month, developer QubicGames has announced.

Originally released individually as some of the first downloadable games for Wii, Bit.Trip became a cult favourite franchise of diverse rhythm-infused puzzling and platforming.

The series will again be launched individually via the Switch eShop, albeit with the extra challenge levels added in the series' previous "Complete" Wii compilation.

Cyberpunk 2077 expansions won't be revealed before launch anymore

3 years 5 months ago

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red will no longer detail the game's forthcoming expansions ahead of its launch.

We were due to hear how and when Cyberpunk 2077 would evolve after its release, but CD Projekt will now hold off discussing its post-launch plans until Q1 next year.

It's perhaps a wise move, considering the continually-delayed release of the main game. Despite game boxes already appearing in the wild ahead of its 10th December launch, the game is still being worked on amid more talk of crunch at the studio.

GreedFall is getting a PS5 and Xbox Series X and S version

3 years 5 months ago

GreedFall is getting a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S version.

Spiders' plucky pirate-themed role-playing game is also getting new content, although we don't know the nature of it yet. We don't know when the next-gen version will come out, either.

GreedFall, which came out in September 2019, ended up selling over a million copies. Malindy reviewed GreedFall for Eurogamer, awarding it a recommended badge. "GreedFall has more than its fair share of faults, and its curious mix of the sweet and the sour is far from a roleplaying revelation," Malindy wrote. "But the elements that matter have been imbued with such love and care - so much so that I quickly forgave this ambitious RPG its shortcomings."

Aldi's Nintendo Switch Black Friday deal sells out - but more offers are available

3 years 5 months ago

Back when Aldi surprised us all by announcing what is surely guaranteed to be the best Nintendo Switch deal this Black Friday we expected demand would be high. Well, a few minutes after going on sale, the Switch was gone.

At one point, over 100,000 people were in the queue to view the Black Friday sale page at Aldi. At this point, the majority of the offers are now sold out. You're still able to get some of the less in-demand items such as a mediocre desktop PC or robot vacuum cleaner, but the big ones are off the menu.

That said, it doesn't mean your hopes of securing a cheap Switch are gone for the year. Right now, there are a handful of decent deals still out there - and with Black Friday now upon us, we are bound to see more flash deals pop up over the next 24 hours.

Can anything be done to stop the PS5 and Xbox Series X scalpers? It's the Eurogamer next-gen news cast!

3 years 5 months ago

Another week, another bucketload of next-gen console news - and so plenty for Eurogamer news editor Tom Phillips, reporter Emma Kent and me to discuss in this week's news cast.

We kick off by talking about the PS5 being the biggest console launch ever - an impressive feat during a pandemic. We then move on to Digital Foundry's analysis of some multiplatform games, which are shown to run better on PS5 than Xbox Series X - a surprise given all the talk about Microsoft's console being the world's most powerful. Microsoft has issued a statement on this, and it looks like developers are still getting to grips with the Xbox Series X, which reportedly came in quite hot.

Talking of company statements, Amazon promised to "put it right" for customers whose PS5s never turned up. But has Amazon put it right? Not exactly...

The best launch titles ever: Ridge Racer on PlayStation

3 years 5 months ago

There are some games whose first encounters with you'll always remember. For me - and I'm sure for many others - it's Ridge Racer. First contact was made the summer of 1994 in a Hastings arcade, a whole week spent pushing 20p pieces into a machine that felt like it had been transported from some shiny new future (later that same week I'd get laughed out of a seafront dance record shop when I asked if they had any copies of Shinji Hosoe's incredible soundtrack).

And then, six months later, there was the future shock of seeing this phenomenal thing running in a friend's living room on a Sony PlayStation that had been imported from Japan at great expense. The arcade had properly made it home, and it started a tradition of PlayStation hardware being christened with a sterling new racer from Namco - Ridge Racer V! Ridge Racers! Er, Ridge Racer 7 maybe? - that was sadly broken by the launch PlayStation 4, and we've been waiting for a proper new entry ever since. Oh how I miss those razor-sharp slides, those fictional sports cars that teetered on the edge of sci-fi with their outrageous designs, those thumping beats and dizzying synth lines of its turbocharged techno.

Arcade racers haven't gone anywhere - indeed, we've had something of a resurgence recently - but games as stylish and slick as Ridge Racer? That's something that's sorely missed. So too is the future shock that Ridge Racer provided at the dawn of the PlayStation generation, and for all the pizazz of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, it's something that's missing a little from both launch line-ups. And that's what made Ridge Racer so special. It wasn't just a great launch title - it felt like an entire paradigm shift.

The PSVR Mega Pack Bundle is out now

3 years 5 months ago

The newest PlayStation VR headset bundle is released today, compatible with both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, sold along with separate games to make the most of this cutting edge new tech.

Those games include Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, Everybody's Golf VR, Moss, Blood & Truth and PlayStation VR Worlds. It's a very solid starting pack, not to mention that it includes the new camera adapter that'll enable the whole thing to be PS5-friendly.

No, it's not been discounted for Black Friday, but that's probably not too surprising, considering it came out only hours ago. If you're planning on getting VR in the future, now might be the time. After all, PSVR is considered one of the better headsets on the market, it's got a decent library of games that's growing constantly, and though there's no Black Friday deal attached to it right now, this is still a decent price for the whole bundle.

Flight Simulator's next World Update will work its makeover magic on the UK in January

3 years 5 months ago

Flight Simulator has only just released its latest World Update, this one giving the USA's most iconic landscapes some much-needed attention, but already developer Asobo is talking about its next round of planetary enhancements, confirming it'll be upgrading the UK in January.

In a similar fashion to earlier geographical spruce-ups for the USA and Japan, Asobo's third World Update will aim to create a more accurate rendition of the UK using "awesome" new data and aerial images for England, Scotland and Wales, and with a host of new landmarks.

In total, as revealed in Asobo's latest livestream, the studio is aiming to introduce 50-60 new points of interest, new procedural buildings (including churches), and improvements for a range of existing airports, such as Land's End, Liverpool EGGP, and Manchester Barton. Additionally, players can expect to see new landing challenges and a new flight.

Desolate combat-focussed "cinematic platformer" Unto The End is out in December

Unto The End, developer 2 Ton Studios' striking, combat-focussed "cinematic platformer", will be coming to PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox One, Game Pass, and Stadia on 9th December. A Switch release will arrive a little later, on 17th December.

Unto The End casts players as an extravagantly bearded warrior on a desperate struggle to return to his family - a journey that takes him from cavernous underground ruins to stark mountain peaks, and pits him against deadly traps and "intelligent, worthy opponents, all with their own motivations and place in the world".

2 Ton Studios notes the protagonist's abilities are all available from the outset, meaning the challenge comes through mastery of those skills, and through improvisation and observation during sword and ranged combat.

The best Black Friday ultra-wide monitor deal is an Alienware

3 years 5 months ago

The best ultra-wide gaming monitor deal we've found so far this Black Friday is this 34-inch Alienware AW3420DW for £747, reduced from a launch price of £1304 earlier this year - and still £83 cheaper than the £830 Amazon and Currys are charging for the same model. That price is after a double discount from Dell's Black Friday deals and code DELLMONER12.

The AW3420DW is a 3440x1440 display with a native refresh rate of 120Hz. As a recent release, it comes with a fast IPS panel with 2ms GtG response times and impressive 98 per cent DCI P3 coverage - making this monitor an ideal choice for content creation. Expect wide viewing angles, great colour accuracy and reasonable contrast too, at 1000:1.

For Americans (🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸): the US Dell store has also discounted this monitor to $830 - versus $1000 on Amazon.

Give Eivor a fancy new hairdo with this Assassin's Creed Valhalla mod

3 years 5 months ago

The world of Assassin's Creed Valhalla is filled with varied and extravagant hairstyles - unless you're Eivor, in which case most of these are off limits. Valhalla gives you a fairly small selection of Viking-approved haircuts which you can unlock and purchase by expanding your settlement, and even if you want to try out some Anglo-Saxon styles 'dos inspired by your time in England, you're normally stuck with your Nordic hairstyles. Until now, that is, as the inevitable customisation mod has arrived.

Made by hypermorphic, who previously created a similar mod for Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Eivor Customiser is a PC mod that gives you access to a wide range of NPC haircuts from Valhalla. There are even a couple of haircuts from Odyssey in there, should you wish to run around as a Viking version of Kassandra.

You can also mess around with a range of hair colours and hairstyle variations. And yes, an immersion-shattering pink is available should you want it. Stranger things do happen in Valhalla.

MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries dev delays Steam release to avoid Cyberpunk stampede

3 years 5 months ago

The developer of MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries has delayed the launch of the game on Steam to avoid getting trampled on by the behemoth that is Cyberpunk 2077.

Piranha Games said the recent delay of Cyberpunk to 10th December 2020 forced it to reconsider its plan to release MechWarrior 5 Mercenaries on Steam and GoG, as well as its Heroes of the Inner Sphere DLC, on the same day.

"Any developer wants their titles to get as much attention as possible, and obviously sharing a release date with Cyberpunk was less than optimal," Piranha said.

Best Black Friday gaming deals at Argos

This year for Black Friday, many are choosing to get their most significant deals on gaming and tech from Argos, which staunchly remains one of the biggest retailers out there. We've listed some of the best deals you can get from Argos, and we'll be updating this page as we go forward.

Argos are pretty good when it comes to gaming deals on what's dependable - consoles, accessories and AAA titles. You won't get a huge amount of variety or anything too niche (they're not solely a gaming outlet, after all), but if you're looking for anything nicely predictable, they should have you covered.

Watch Dogs: Legion - essentially identical on PS5 and Xbox Series X

3 years 5 months ago

Featuring a beautifully rendered open world recreating one of the world's most iconic cities, while leaning heavily into hardware accelerated ray tracing, Watch Dogs: Legion is one of the most technically ambitious games for the current cross generation period. The cross-platform comparison between the next generation machines isn't the most interesting head-to-head we've seen so far - PS5 and Xbox Series X are very, very close - but it's great to see ray traced reflections appear on Xbox Series S. Yes, we're getting hardware RT on a £250/$250 console.

But to address the most burning question, I can confirm right away that Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 do indeed run with practically identical visual settings - an almost complete match for the details locked away in the PC version's configuration files (which don't just include PC settings, but every single version). This is most readily evident in side-by-side ray tracing comparisons - the RT effect is identical, but crucially, the cut-off for objects not in the reflection is also the same, meaning matched fidelity in the effect itself, but also identical compromises and optimisations.

Series S also has the same settings for its ray traced reflections, but with one crucial difference. The premium consoles target a dynamic 4K rendering resolution for the majority of the presentation, but reflections run at checkerboarded 1080p instead. For Series S with its much lower 1080p target pixel-count, RT reflection resolution drops in step - reflections here are rendered internally at 720p instead, with the same reconstruction technique.

Microsoft acknowledges Xbox Series X and S performance issues

3 years 5 months ago

Microsoft has acknowledged performance issues with some Xbox Series X and S games that were found to run better on PlayStation 5.

In contrast to Microsoft's marketing message that the Xbox Series X is the world's most powerful console, Digital Foundry's analysis of games such as Devil May Cry 5, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and Dirt 5 show deficiencies on next-gen Xbox consoles compared to PS5.

Here's Digital Foundry on Devil May Cry 5: "In terms of correlating on-paper specs to the actual experience on-screen, PS5 is either punching above its weight, or Xbox Series X isn't delivering on the full potential promised by a bigger silicon investment and a much more substantial memory interface."

Switch Lite Black Friday bundles now include Animal Crossing for just £210

3 years 5 months ago

As has been the case for the whole year, it's looking difficult to get hold of a Nintendo Switch. If you're looking for the more affordable Switch Lite on the other hand, supplies aren't just in greater availability, Nintendo has officially released a bundle with Animal Crossing just in time for Black Friday.

The bundle includes a digital code for Animal Crossing: New Horizons as well a three-month Nintendo Switch Online subscription, which you'll need for online multiplayer such as visiting friends' islands, while also providing access to a huge library of NES and SNES games. Amazon has these bundles available for just £209.99!

We should note these bundles are only available in the above colours - perhaps a subtle but old-fashioned attempt of buying a gift based on gender. You can however opt for Amazon's own bundles that comes in the full array of Switch Lite colours that comes with a physical copy of the game. And if Animal Crossing isn't your thing, you have other games to choose from too.

The Steam Autumn Sale has arrived

3 years 5 months ago

If all the current Black Friday deals already flooding the internet weren't enough, the Steam Autumn Sale is now here, with hundreds of deals on PC games and software.

This year the sale lasts until December 1st, 18:00PM GMT, and as usual the main Steam storefront has been redesigned to promote the new deals, with sections for genre, for major franchises, for users' wishlists and featured deals, among others. We've outlined some of the best offers we've seen here, and there's a good chance that there'll be other offers cropping up as we go through the week.

This also marks the start of nominations for this year's Steam Awards, the site-wide ceremony where users can nominate and vote for various games in various entries - game of the year, best VR game, soundtrack, story and so on. Nominations start now and voting will occur during the Winter sale later (presumably landing in the Christmas period).

Why Hangout Games are due for a renaissance

'Any last words?' they demand.

'RIP,' she responds. 'RIP me.'

Who said that? Was it Joan of Arc? Mary Antoinette beneath the guillotine? No. It was congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, shortly before she was punted into space during the first round of her Among Us livestream in September. The mainstream press was quick to praise Cortez for her media savvy, but little attention was paid to the game itself (the Guardian called it faddish). This strikes me as a serious oversight. While it looks like something spawned on the pages of Newgrounds circa 2005, Among Us is the perfect game for today - and quite possibly tomorrow, too.

The best launch titles ever: Super Monkey Ball on GameCube

3 years 5 months ago

From Duck Hunt to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Nintendo is the undisputed king of the launch game. Two of its console debuts, Super Mario World and Super Mario 64, can lay claim to being among the greatest games ever made; Wii Sports is the fourth best-selling game of all time. So it is a delicious irony that the best launch game for the GameCube was made not by Nintendo but by its old arch-rival Sega - indeed, it was one of Sega's first releases as a third-party publisher. Revenge? Truce? Either way it was poignant.

The game was a port of a relatively obscure arcade title that you played with a banana joystick. It was also the creation of Toshihiro Nagoshi: a proponent of Sega's ecstatic, day-glo arcade aesthetic in the likes of Daytona USA before he remade himself as the inscrutable lounge-lizard behind the seedy and sentimental Yakuza series. The game was 2001's Super Monkey Ball.

In Super Monkey Ball, you guide a cartoon monkey in a ball - two-toned and slightly opaque, like a toy capsule - to a goal. The levels are abstract assemblages of platforms floating in space. There is one control: the analogue stick. The key thing to understand about Super Monkey Ball is that you do not control the monkey - or the ball - you control the level. You tilt the world this way and that to guide the monkey where you want it to go. It's like a surreal ball maze, or an inverted Marble Madness. There are banana pick-ups which increase your score, as does your completion time. There are difficult-to-reach warp gates that skip you forward several levels. And that is all there is to it.

4A Games says it's "actively exploring multiplayer concepts" in the Metro universe

3 years 5 months ago

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Metro 2033's release, and developer 4A Games has celebrated the occasion in a wide-ranging new blogpost touching on its future plans - including a new IP, a new multiplayer experience in the Metro universe, and a free next-gen update for Metro Exodus.

The next-gen update will be available to owners of the existing Xbox One and PS4 digital and physical editions of Metro Exodus some time next year, and introduces significant enhancements on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, including ray tracing, faster frame rates, increased resolution, and reduced loading.

Beyond Metro Exodus, 4A has re-confirmed that a new Metro game is in development for next-gen consoles and PC at the studio. And while it says it's not yet ready to share more details, it teases that it's working on a complete overhaul of its engine and renderer "to take advantage of the new power, storage, and hardware supported ray tracing afforded by the new consoles."

Texel Raptor's latest addition, however - which follows on from two paid DLC expansions - is the game's most significant endeavour yet, offering the kind of collaborative multiplayer building experience that's frequently requested by fans but rarely seen in the genre.

Cuphead developer confirms Delicious Last Course DLC will no longer launch this year

However, as July 2019 rolled around, Studio MDHR revealed it had made the decision to push The Delicious Last Course's launch into 2020 so the DLC would meet "the meticulous level of care and quality we always strive for" and to ensure the developer could continue to "make things in a way that's healthy and sustainable for our team".

Watch Dogs: Legion's multiplayer modes have been delayed into next year

3 years 5 months ago

Watch Dogs: Legion will no longer be getting its multiplayer modes next week as originally planned, with Ubisoft announcing it's delaying all online features into next year while it concentrates its efforts on addressing the game's various technical issues.

Ubisoft had initially intended to release Legion's multiplayer modes - offering co-operative free-roaming and mission-doing for 2-4 players, alongside various PvP challenges - in a post-launch update on 3rd December. Unfortunately, the game's arrival was mired by bugs, some relatively minor, others considerably more serious, and Ubisoft has now pledged to focus its efforts on squashing those before moving onto other endeavours.

"Since the launch of Watch Dogs: Legion," the publisher wrote, "some of you continue to have technical issues preventing you from enjoying the game. The dev team is committed to fixing these issues and will not stop until everyone can experience the game as intended."

Monster Hunter movie infiltrating Iceborne next week with new crossover event

Marvel's Avengers yet to recoup development costs

3 years 5 months ago

Marvel's Avengers is yet to earn back the money spent on its development, publisher Square Enix has conceded, after it published financial results showing a 7bn yen (£50.1m) loss for the quarter.

Sales of the big budget blockbuster were "lower than expected", company president Yosuke Matsude admitted in a newly-translated financial briefing (thanks, IGN).

Square Enix's overall loss for the quarter was caused by a mixture of low Marvel's Avengers retail sales and the amount of money splashed out on its "major advertising campaign", which the company had spent big on to drum up interest after the game's earlier delay.

PlayStation Plus December 2020 games announced

3 years 5 months ago

Worms Rumble, Just Cause 4, and Rocket Arena are coming to PlayStation Plus subscribers on 1st December, Sony has announced.

Team17's Worms Rumble has 32-player, cross-platform combat. Just Cause 4 is Avalanche's December 2018 blow 'em-up (Donlan called it "likeably scrappy open-world carnage" in Eurogamer's review), and Rocket Arena is EA's colourful competitive multiplayer 3v3 shooter. All the games are available to play until Monday, 4th January.

While Rocket Arena was well-received, it struggled to get any attention in the crowded team-based shooter market when it launched in July, and its premium price-point plummeted soon after launch. In September, Rocket Arena's 30-day average concurrent player count on Steam was just 71, which meant players were struggling to get games. Its release on PS Plus should give it a shot in the arm on PlayStation, though.

Days after Amazon promised to "put it right" for PS5 customers left with pet food, here's where we are now

3 years 5 months ago

Last week, Amazon promised to "put it right" for every PlayStation 5 customer who did not receive the console they'd paid for, after many received alternative items or simply nothing at all.

Now, mid-week, we've checked in with some of those affected to see how things are going, and if Amazon has kept its word.
