Pokémon Go spent all weekend hyping a mysterious raid egg

3 years 4 months ago

Pokémon Go has been teasing a curious raid egg, which is set to hatch later tonight.

The game's social media accounts began trailing the development on Saturday, with the first of four videos (to date) teasing a pink egg with a six-hour countdown. Fans excitedly waited six hours, to be greeted by a new video, now with a 44-hour countdown.

Immediately, fan speculation went into overdrive, and some lofty suggestions were made. Could it be Zygarde, the Gen 6 Legendary made up of many individual cells? Perhaps Niantic was introducing it cell by cell?!

Empire of Sin review - intoxicating but overwhelming

3 years 4 months ago

There's a lot to like about this 1920s gangster sim. It's an intricately detailed game about a romanticised time. And as you would expect, it has gangsters in fedoras and fur coats and flapper gear, and Tommy guns and knuckle dusters and baseball bats. Those curvy old cars and delivery trucks rumble down the cobbled, often rain-slicked streets. And behind the mundane facades of everyday life - the grocery stores and laundry houses - the illicit industries roar. Speakeasies jump with music and laughter while breweries bubble in an effort to keep up. And you can see it all in gorgeous detail, right down to the fug from the cigar smoke and the glow from the lanterns.

Perhaps more importantly, you can get right up close to the people you control, which breathes personality into the game. You can get to know the gangsters you employ, like Big Fat Gibby Willard (that's his name!), who runs around in trousers and braces but no top, exposing his flabby upper half. He was great until a police officer strayed into a rumble we were having and he died. And now - yes - he's dead for good.

But there are loads of other gangsters I can hire, not that I can afford them all. And they all have their own stories, own ridiculous names, own traits, own capabilities. Some love each other, some hate each other. Some are better drunk than sober. Some are courageous and others timid. They all have their pros and cons. Some can even work against you as a mole, though you'll never know for sure. And you'll come to know those you hire like family.

Zavvi has released a new collection of Pokemon clothes

3 years 4 months ago

Online retailer Zavvi has unleashed - or maybe just hatched - a new range of Pokemon clothes, with t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies featuring various beloved Pokemon (all from the first generation right now).

There's some pretty good options out there. Our personal favorites include a green Bulbasaur jumper, a rather intense Psyduck hoodie, and a Margikarp t-shirt that's likely to cause a splash. Have we done enough Pokemon puns yet? Maybe time to give it a Nosepass.

Regardless, you can find the best examples of their collection just below, or check out the full collection here.

Star Wars: The Old Republic players hold memorial service for Darth Vader actor David Prowse

3 years 4 months ago

There was sad news this past weekend for Star Wars fans, as David Prowse - known for physically portraying Darth Vader in the original film trilogy - passed away on 28th November, aged 85. Yet a number of Star Wars: The Old Republic players decided to mark the occasion in a rather wholesome way, by gathering in-game to hold a minute's silence for the actor.

As you can see in the video below, dozens of players flocked to Sith capital Dromund Kaas last night to remember Prowse, with many making their characters kneel while paying their respects. It seems the vast majority were able to hold the silence (aside from one guild recruiter, as ever), and the minute ended with a round of applause. "Thank you very much. No one is ever really gone," said player Jemorri as they brought the minute's silence to a close.

Once the solemn service was over, however, things got a little more raucous, with players letting off fireworks, bringing out their lightsabers, and having a boogie. With a fair helping of Sith lightning, of course.

Currys goes live with early Cyber Monday deals

3 years 4 months ago

Black Friday may be pretty much vanquished, but it's ready to morph into its final boss form: Cyber Monday, armed to the teeth with even more deals for bargain-hungry shoppers.

Traditionally, Black Friday involves larger, big-ticket goods that see the most reductions, with Cyber Monday's discounts featuring smaller products such as games or films.

This year, however, we've seen big savings across the board, and with a year like this one, boy have we needed them.

Here's when the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel is slated to release

Uri Geller apologises for Pokémon dispute and says it's "up to Nintendo" to bring Kadabra back

3 years 4 months ago

Uri Geller has finally U-turned on his decision to prevent Nintendo from using Pokémon Kadabra, saying he continues to get "tremendous volumes of emails" about it and is "truly sorry" for the dispute that flared up 20 years ago.

The Pokémon - which translates as "Yungerer" or "Yungeller" in Japanese and famously touted a spoon - disappeared in the early 2000s after Geller mounted a legal battle after he alleged the Pokémon used his likeness. He particularly took issue that the Pokémon was an "evil, occult Pokémon character" (thanks, VG247) and fought to prevent Nintendo from using it.

Now, however, it seems the illusionist has had a change of heart.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla patch 1.0.4: Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 re-tested

3 years 4 months ago

Thursday's 1.0.4 patch for Assassin's Creed Valhalla is the first big update for Ubisoft's latest massive open worlder - and a crucial one, delivering a vast array of gameplay improvements and bug fixes, but of course, the Digital Foundry focus is more on technical validation for what has been the most contentious of the next generation launch line-up. For all of its spec advantages, Xbox Series X ran with a performance penalty against PlayStation 5, while Xbox Series S launched without the signature next-gen 60fps support. The 1.0.4 patch aims to address of all of this - and indeed, it does - and also adds a 4K30 quality mode too.

First of all though, we need to tackle an interesting wrinkle that has emerged from the arrival of the new patch. While there's broad consensus that the performance situation is much improved on Xbox Series X, another narrative has emerged suggesting that the PlayStation 5 version now runs worse than it did. To clear this one up straight away, we could only find one example of this actually being the case - the introductory cutscene takes an occasional, small drop to frame-rate we didn't see in our first test. In every other stress test we have, PlayStation 5 runs at the same frame-rate with the same dynamic resolution result as it did previously.

Here are Apex Legends' most popular characters

3 years 4 months ago

Apex Legends players have lifted the lid on which are our favourite characters in its battle royale, Apex Legends, and while the top spot is unlikely to shock you, I can't pretend I wasn't surprised by some of the other entries on the list.

Earlier this week, Apex Legends News asked players to select which Legends boasted the highest pick rate, and rank them from 1-5. Though it promised to respond "in 1 hour" it actually took a full day for the team to return to Twitter, where it confirmed that - yep, you guessed it - Wraith continues to be the game's most popular character.

Bloodhound clocked in at second place - which is pretty good given they're not a character that has a particularly impressive win rate - with newbie Horizon taking the bronze (thanks DBLTAP).

Forza Horizon 5 might be coming sooner than we think

3 years 4 months ago

Forza Horizon 5 might not have been announced yet, but one journalist has gone on record to say we might get it ahead of the recently revealed Forza Motorsport, possibly as early as 2021.

In the podcast The Xbox Empire, GameBeat's Jeff Grubb revealed that he suspects we "might get the next Forza Horizon game first" even though Playground Games has yet to confirm the game is in development.

"We saw Forza Motorsport get teased a few months ago [but] I think we might get the next Forza Horizon game first and I think that might be coming this coming year," Grubb said (thanks, VGC). "They're in a weird situation where for some reason Playground says it does seem like they may be ready to go first. I think I know the setting, but I'm going to let them announce it."

Fallout 76 now features C.A.M.P. wheelchairs following a fan request

3 years 4 months ago

Wheelchairs are now available as C.A.M.P. decorations in Fallout 76 after a Bethesda employee spotted a request on the game's subreddit.

In a message entitled "Please sweet Beth, give me a wheelchair", Kel Leunen reached out to the development team, stating: "I'm disabled irl and I would really REALLY love a wheelchair I can place in my C.A.M.P. It would make me so happy to have that little piece of me in my creations. And I think a lot of other people would enjoy it too (maybe for when you recreate a hospital/medbay)".

After the usual back and forth in the comments, Kel later updated their message to say: "Another edit: for people playing 'devil's advocate'; I'm asking for a furniture item which model already exists in game. I'm not asking for my character to turn disabled, I'm asking for a chair I can place in my camp, we already have loads of chair models.

Looking for the old Souls within Bluepoint's Demon's Souls remake

3 years 4 months ago

Bluepoint Games' reimagining of Demon's Souls is the highest-rated launch game on PS5, and understandably so. The Austin studio has done a fantastic job of bringing its interpretation of Demon's Souls to Sony's brand-new console, furnishing its remake of a cult classic with mod-cons like a fully-featured photo mode, two different graphical options - and, of course, graphics to die for. Still, it's fascinating to note some of the things Bluepoint had creative license to change when remaking Demon's Souls - and to ask whether some elements of the original design have been lost in translation.

Demon's Souls had a rocky start. Initially pitched as an 'Oblivion' competitor, it struggled in its early stages of development. This is where Armored Core 4 and For Answer Director, Hidetaka Miyazaki was brought on to steer the ship, and make sure that Demon's Souls made it all the way to a final release. After an initial showing, EX-SIE President Shuhei Yoshida recalled calling it 'unbelievably bad'. Sony never published the original release of Demon's Souls outside of Asia.

Details from its developers are still scarce 10 years on, with only a few snippets of interviews with key staff being the only information we have about the conditions in which Demon's Souls was developed. But there's a clear narrative of strife, and struggling to meet internal expectations with Sony Japan. That struggle can be seen by way of what we're presented with in the game itself. The broken Archstone, full of cut content, frustrating swamps and "cheap" boss fights like the Dragon God, which was probably envisioned as more of a set piece than a quick, easy boss. But, the conditions and resources allocated to the game also reflected the world that From Software was trying to portray.

Both games are based on The Legend of Zelda franchise, but aren't considered part of the official series, and were precursors to the infamous CD-i game Zelda's Adventure. The three Zelda CD-i games are considered among the worse in The Legend of Zelda franchise.

"I was getting so frustrated haha," helloiamjack said. "The last attempt I actually realised how much easier it was if I just charged basically through his legs rather than trying to run a wide berth around him and then get behind. So much satisfaction when finished though!"

One eBay user contacted Eurogamer to say they had talked to eBay customer support to flag the issue of people bidding on photos of a PS5 thinking they were bidding on the console, after nearly falling for the scam themselves.

We found the best Black Friday gaming laptop deal under £1000

3 years 4 months ago

The best Black Friday gaming laptop deal we've spotted under £1000 is on the Lenovo Legion 5. Right now you can pick up this fully kitted-out laptop with a high-performance Ryzen 4800H processor and fast RTX 2060 graphics card for £950, which is £150 less than its usual price. Finding Ryzen 4000-series laptops has been tough after the word got out that they were significantly faster and more power-efficient than their Intel counterparts, so this is a particularly good find!

Let's have a look at the rest of the specs - it's all pretty impressive. You have 16GB of RAM, 512GB of high-speed NVMe SSD storage and a 15-inch 144Hz display. Normally corners are cut to get an RTX-equipped laptop under the £1000 mark, but this is all really good.

The screen is an IPS model, so it only gets moderately bright but offers excellent colour reproduction and wide viewing angles - this could be a laptop you use for colour-sensitive professional work if you wanted to!

Assassin's Creed Valhalla keeps sending players to assassinate training dummies

3 years 4 months ago

Earlier this week, mid-way through one of my Valhalla sessions, I got a bit of a shock when one of my daily assassination targets popped up right next to me in Ravensthorpe. My blood ran cold. A dangerous thief in the settlement? Right here, next to the frolicking children? Things could be about to get messy.

I peeked out of the longhouse - expecting an armoured contingent of soldiers to be wreaking havoc - and instead spied a lone figure, which the game told me was the Duke of Burgundy. I summoned all my powers of stealth, and shot the target down from a distance.

It was at this point I realised my assassination target was actually a training dummy.

Crown prince of Saudi Arabia's flagship charity buys a chunk of SNK - and it wants more

3 years 4 months ago

The crown prince of Saudi Arabia's flagship charity has bought a third of Japanese game company SNK - and it's shooting for more.

The 813m riyals (£162m) investment from a subsidiary of the Mohammed bin Salman Charitable Foundation "Misk" charity amounts to 33.3 per cent of SNK's shares, and values the company at around £490m. In a note to press, Misk said the deal stipulates it will buy another 17.7 per cent of SNK's shares, raiding its ownership to 51 per cent. That'll give it a majority shareholding.

The Misk foundation has been central to Mohammed bin Salman's drive to extend his brand overseas, and this investment is another move in that direction. But it is sure to attract criticism. The assassination of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi was attributed to Salman by the CIA, and Saudi Arabia has a notoriously poor human rights record, with homosexuality still criminalised with punishments ranging from floggings to the death penalty.

The best launch titles ever: Pokémon Dash on the DS

3 years 4 months ago

Pokémon Dash is one of those games that makes you say, 'Someone made that? Really? Why?' The answer is that Nintendo were releasing the Nintendo DS and they most likely wanted a Pokémon title in the launch lineup to boost sales, so Pokémon Dash was born. The game's premise is simple - you're a Pokémon, there are races, you run in said races, try to win and hopefully avoid the lava, because there are no regulations in Pokémon races.

Sounds mildly exciting, right? Well, Pokémon Dash has a few setbacks.

Firstly, aside from multiplayer, you only ever play as Pikachu. Sure Bulbasaur, Meowth, Torchic and even Munchlax, which - fun fact - makes Pokémon Dash one of the first games to include a Gen 4 Pokémon, are there, but, if none of your friends own Pokémon Dash, it's one hundred percent Pikachu, one hundred per cent of the time.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure - how Sony tackles the generational divide

3 years 4 months ago

From my perspective, no console launch is truly complete without an excellent platform game and thankfully, Sony and developer Sumo Digital deliver exactly that for PlayStation 5 with Sackboy: A Big Adventure. It's a beautiful game, and a fascinating example of how one developer aims to straddle the generational divide - while Sackboy champions the power of PlayStation 5, there's also support for PS4 and PS4 Pro too. The question is, has Sumo Digital delivered the kind of magic we expect from a platform exclusive next-gen launch title but at the same time still deliver a good experience for owners of existing PlayStation hardware?

First of all, it's worth stressing that Sackboy: A Big Adventure may well be tapping into the characters and aesthetic of the Little Big Planet titles, but game concept itself is something quite different: think of it as 3D platforming experience more along the lines of Super Mario 3D World - fun, quirky, exciting and attractive. The key point of differentiation compared to the LBP titles is that there's no creation mode. What you get instead is superb platforming, plain and simple, delivered with visuals that really put the underlying Unreal Engine 4 through its paces.

The best PS4 Black Friday game deals on The Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima and more

It's, without doubt, one of the best-looking games on PS4, though if you're playing on PS5, it also has additional enhancements including use of the DualSense's adaptive triggers, adding new haptics when pulling back the string of a bow, firing a gun or even when using a motorboat.

Red Dead Online players are flying outside the map using a wibbly wobbly bridge

3 years 4 months ago

Red Dead Online's community had often looked for ways to amuse itself while waiting for further content updates, and the latest obsession across Reddit and YouTube is... a bridge. But this isn't just any sort of bridge, as this one can hurl you across the map - or even into Mexico and beyond.

Although it's unclear who exactly discovered the glitch (it looks like this post by user jaitom may have been the first), for the past few days the Red Dead Online subreddit has been filled with videos of players using the bridge to launch them high into the air and out of bounds. It's even become slightly competitive, with friends attempting to outdo one another's launch distances, and see who can fly the furthest. The bridge has launched some players to Mars-like landscapes, while others have taken the opportunity to explore some of the unused buildings in Mexico.
