Hitman is getting its first elusive target in two years and it's DJ Dimitri Vegas

9 months 1 week ago

Hitman 3 turned into Hitman: World Of Assassination last year, grouping the entire trilogy of missions all under one roof and adding a roguelike mode. The murder sim has been relatively quiet since.

Now a new elusive target is coming to the game this autumn, the first in two years. It's about taking down a character called The Drop, played by real-world DJ Dimitri Vegas.

Ludicrously, Ebay USA's Back To School sale includes 20% off this $999 LG OLED 240Hz gaming monitor

9 months 1 week ago

When I was a kid growing up in rural New Mexico, I dreaded the first day of school. I had to give up whole days of biking in the desert with my brother and playing video games, sure, but the real problem was school supplies. My poor mom had to track down a huge list of supplies the school said we needed, from pencils and paper to expensive binders and calculators. Sure, back to school sales took the sting out of these mandatory purchases, but it was often a real stretch to get everything I needed, and I'd need to make friends quickly to borrow anything I didn't manage to come to school with.

That's why I was particularly amused, a decade and a bit later, to find out that Ebay is offering 20% off back to school purchases in the US, and that category of products includes a $999 LG OLED gaming monitor. Even for a university student, that's one heck of an upgrade for the new school year - but a darn good deal if you're considering this kind of ultra-premium gaming monitor.

Race to solve puzzles in Escape Simulator's new versus update

9 months 1 week ago

For a few evenings last year, a friend and I had fun playing escape room puzzler Escape Simulator. He's smarter than I am, which was a boon because we were playing coopratively. It might be less beneficial now, since Pine Studio have just released Escape Simulator's "Versus Update". It lets you race to solve escape room puzzles competitively, with a new "truly challenging room that takes place on a quiz show from the '80s."

This 100W 4-port GaN charger is down to £42 at Scan in the UK

9 months 1 week ago

Ugreen is a Chinese brand that has made a name for itself by providing surprisingly good design and build quality with the same aggressive pricing as its domestic competitors. I've used one of their USB-C chargers before, but I wish I'd bought this 4-port Gallium Nitride (GaN) charger that offers three USB-C ports, one USB-A port and a maximum output of 100W - sufficient for many lighter laptops, but more importantly the Steam Deck, mobile phones, tablets, headphones and controllers. This normally costs £50, but today it's down to £42 to Scan in the UK.

Sin remaster "isn't dead", say Night Dive, but will "go through some changes"

9 months 1 week ago

I have an affection for '90s first-person shooter Sin I suspect the game doesn't deserve, because it had a handful of good guns, ATMs you could press the buttons on, and a fight on the rooftop of a train. I am therefore always interested in each seemingly cursed attempt to revive the series.

The latest is Sin: Reloaded, from frequent remaster crew Night Dive Studios. Announced back in 2020 without an update since, Night Dive now say that the project "isn't dead" but will be tackled "at a later date."

Delete your Baldur's Gate 3 early access saves and uninstall the game, say Larian

9 months 1 week ago

Update: Larian Studios have now posted a detailed guide on how to prepare for Baldur's Gate 3's launch. The Steam blog says that early access saves and profiles "aren't compatible with the release version... and leaving them in your save folders may in some fringe cases cause issues."

Original Story: Baldur's Gate 3 is mere days away, and you may be wondering if you can prep in some way for the epic RPG's release. You can, it turns out: not by pre-loading its 122GB download size on Steam, no, but by deleting your Early Access saves and uninstalling the game entirely.

Want a height adjustable sit/stand desk for $110?

Want a sit/stand height adjustable desk for $119? Monoprice are currently selling their WFH single motor model for exactly this price when you use the code BIG30 at the checkout, saving you a ton of money on a desk with an MSRP of $279.99.

This is available only on the white model, which I happen to think looks great - and this is really an outstanding price for a sit/stand price of this size (47.2 x 23.6 inches, for the record).

Remnant 2 has a secret class its developer deliberately hid for dataminers to find

9 months 1 week ago

Remnant 2 is doing alright for itself; not only has the Souls-esque procedural shooter secured some extremely positive reviews, it's also selling well too. And amid all the general positivity surrounding its release, there's a bit of fun additional news, courtesy of a whole new secret class that developer Gunfire Games squirrelled away for dataminers to find.

The class (or Archetype, as Remnant 2 would have it) in question is known as the Archon, and requires players to go through an extremely convoluted set of steps to unlock, ranging from activating skills on specific Archetypes at certain levels to equipping a whole lot of gear before hefting the everything over to a very particular place.

The requirements, then, are not the kind of thing anyone is really ever likely to stumble across by accident, with Gunfire Games instead having designed the Archon class to be something that could only realistically be uncovered by dataminers.

Grado GW100x review: wireless open-back headphones, you say?

It's been a couple of months since I reviewed the open-back Grado SR325x, but now it's time to look at another pair of Grado headphones - this time with wireless. The £228/$275 GW100x is the long-awaited upgrade to 2018's GW100, bringing with it updated 44mm drivers, Bluetooth 5.2 with the aptX Adaptive codec and much improved battery life. The idea of wireless open-backs might seem like a novelty at first, but as we delve deeper you'll see there's much more to them than meets the eye.

Firstly, fitment and comfort. Well, the GW100x at 188g is immensely light, and makes a change from other headphones I've tested, which can be double the weight of these Grados. The clamping force they provide, much like with the SR325Xs, is determined by shaping the headband to the shape of your head and letting the headphones rest on your ears. This can take some getting used to, but get it right, and the GW100x makes for an immensely comfortable set of cans.

The trade-off for the lightweight design is a rather flimsy plastic construction, which doesn't hold up well against alternatives in this price bracket from Sony and Bose like the NC700s. Of course, plastic is the material of choice for Grado cans in their Prestige line, such as the SR60s and SR80s, but these headphones also cost much less than the W100x do. There's not even a case included in the box, so long-term durability is a concern.

Knight Crawlers is a clever action-RPG with endearingly goofy baddies

Knight Crawlers is an action-RPG kind of thing that came out earlier this year. Having bounced off Diablo 4 a bit, I've still had an itch to disappear into the depths and smack skeletons around. Knight Crawlers has done me proud so far. I'm not too far in, but I'm having a great time.

It's a roguelite at heart. Each journey into the procedural depths sees you creating a build as you level that lives for just that run. But any gold you collect - it may not be called gold, I'm between specs at the moment - goes back to the hub where you can spend it on permanent upgrades. And so, over time, you get further and further into the game, while each run remains charmingly distinct.

In truth, Knight Crawlers is charmingly distinct from the off. It has wonderfully wobbly physics, which means that the enemies who chase after you all totter around like eggs balanced precariously on a kitchen counter. The ragdolling as you do them in is very satisfying, and there's a lovely gormlessness to both heroes and villains here.

Diablo 4's Season of the Malignant is a hell of my own making

As an avid enthusiast of artful, purposeful suffering in games, returning to Diablo 4 for its first season seems, on the surface, like a joyful midnight binge at McDonalds: a hollow but familiar, mostly satisfying romp through your menu favourites, with useless tchotchkes that come with your meal, whether you want them or not. But once you hit endgame - I maxed out the entire season battle pass in a week - everything becomes a seemingly interminable period of digestive limbo. This constipatory hangover is usually marked by a series of revelations - I think I'm over it, they changed the recipe, this doesn't taste as good as it used to. But when season two arrives, we'll be back at the beginning of the cycle again, clamouring for the golden arches of hell to open for eager, optimistic, freshly-rolled Wanderers. For many Diablo players, including myself, this is the way.

It's true that Diablo has always been about the unending grind, but in season one, the tedium has never been so pronounced. At times, it felt more joyless than the spiritless farming and loot churn that was a defining part of Diablo 3. With all of the season pass treats pushed at me each time I do a little more, it often feels like I'm being trained on maximising my productivity and efficiency in a corporate rewards program or a gig worker job. Examining the new Diablo has largely been coming to terms with my relationship with the game and the way it meticulously replicates real-world gig economy bullshit, something that triple-A live-service games have always done to a degree, but now, the similarities feel downright pathological.

Genshin Impact Fontaine Special Program 4.0 Airs This Week when

HoYoVerse announced when we can watch the the Genshin Impact Special Program going over all the new Fontaine additions in 4.0. The presentation will air at 4:30am PT/7:30am ET/1:30pm CEST on August 4, 2023. As usual, it will first air on the official Twitch channel. Nintendo Restores Wii U Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon Online Play After 5-Month Absence

Nintendo has restored online play for Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, and apologised to fans after taking the servers offline for five months to fix a security exploit.

“In March 2023, Nintendo paused network services for the Wii U games Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 to address a vulnerability related to online play,” reads a post on the Nintendo website. “The issue has now been fixed, and so we will resume online play for these games based on the schedule below. Please accept our sincere apologies for the extended waiting period.”

Nintendo hauled the servers offline for urgent maintenance on March 3, citing “a vulnerability related to online play” without mentioning when the games would be restored.

At the time, dataminer OatmealDome suggested both games could have rendered players open to a netcode vulnerability called “ENLBufferPwn”, which lets malicious actors execute code and take control of another user's console remotely.

Nintendo has yet to confirm whether this exploit was indeed the cause of the scare. Regardless, it took the company a full five months to address the problem, and it seems any further issues with keeping the titles online could see Mario Kart 8, and Splatoon’s Wii U servers permanently shut down.

Saints Row Reboot’s Third and Potentially Final Expansion Has a Release Date

Saints Row’s third and potentially final expansion, A Song Of Ice And Dust, comes out August 8, developer Volition has announced.

The expansion launches ahead of Saint Row's August 24 Steam release, which comes alongside a new activity for players on all platforms.

Volition has yet to detail A Song Of Ice And Dust, save mention of new missions, new cosmetics, new weapons, new vehicles, and a brief blurb: “When a crippling ambush decimates the Dustlanders, it’s up to fierce rivals Bossonius and Gwendolyn Firebird to join forces and defend The DustFaire from a new foe.” Yep, it’s Saints Row does Game of Thrones.

A Song Of Ice And Dust is the final piece of DLC outlined in Saints Row’s post-launch roadmap and potentially brings an end to a reboot that endured a tough critical and commercial reception upon its August 2022 release. IGN’s Saints Row review came away with a 6/10: “Saints Row delivers no shortage of shallow shoot 'em up thrills, but it's a very familiar and uninspired brand of sandbox fun.”

In November, parent company Embracer merged Volition into Borderlands maker Gearbox. At the time, Embracer boss Lars Wingefors admitted “the reception of Saints Row did not meet the full expectations and left the fanbase partially polarized”.

Capcom Delivers Early Verdicts on Street Fighter 6 and Exoprimal Sales

Capcom has issued verdicts on the initial sales performance of the recently-released Street Fighter 6 and Exoprimal.

Street Fighter 6 sold two million copies in just over a month which, in a note to investors, Capcom said was “generally progressing in line with our expectations”, adding it hoped positive word of mouth would fuel follow-up success.

“Compared to the internal plan for the title, sales are generally progressing in line with our expectations,” Capcom said. “We believe that its positive critical reception will work as a tailwind in expanding future sales of the game as a catalogue title.”

Capcom said it's aiming for Street Fighter 6 to outsell Street Fighter 5, which means selling over 10 million over the course of its lifetime.

“While we do not communicate specific figures for internal budgets, we look to outperform the title’s predecessor, Street Fighter 5, and are aiming for more than 10 million units over the life of the title,” Capcom said. Capcom declined to disclose Street Fighter 6 development costs.

Street Fighter 6 has just released its first DLC character, Rashid, and subsequent DLC character releases (including the hugely popular Akuma) should give sales a shot in the arm. Street Fighter 6’s top-billing at tournaments, such as the high-profile Evo event, should boost sales further.

Too big for Steam Deck? Remnant 2 and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart tested

Two of the most technically advanced current-gen titles have just launched on PC - Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Remnant 2. These games push features like ray tracing, advanced upsampling, virtualised geometry and GPU-driven decompression, taxing even high-end PCs - and yet, both games also received Valve's Steam Deck Verified seal of approval. Can the modest 15W APU that powers the Deck deliver a good experience in these cutting edge games, with good-looking visuals at reasonable frame-rates? Or do these latest PS5 ports push past the limits of Valve's handheld?

Rift Apart in particular is one of the most cutting-edge current-gen titles, but the game is surprisingly scalable. We actually don't need to cut back visual settings much at all, but upscaling is required to get into a comfortable performance window on the Deck. Here we have three options: AMD's FSR 2, Insomniac's temporal injection technique, or Intel's XeSS, running in its reduced quality DP4A path with support for non-Intel GPUs.

Running all modes in their performance presets, I generally preferred the look of the XeSS image, which is sharp and relatively free of visual artefacts. FSR 2 suffered from more artefacting but maintained visual clarity, while temporal injection delivered a softer image with an artefacting level roughly between the other two options. On the surface, it seems like XeSS is the right choice - but FSR 2's better performance eventually become the overriding factor. I used the performance preset to provide a stable set of resolution settings, though the dynamic resolution options do work very well if you want to try those instead.

Genshin Impact Artifact Inventory Limit Increase Among 4.0 Updates

Best Klee Artifacts in Genshin Impact.

HoYoVerse announced three Artifact updates for Genshin Impact, with the biggest being an increase in the inventory limit. It will go up to 1,800 after the 4.0 update debuts. It also announced it will be easier to quickly destroy Artifacts to turn them into Mora. You’ll also have eight more Artifact Sets under the Genshin Impact Crafting Bench’s Mystic Offering “exchange.”

At this moment, you can only have up to 1,500 Artifacts in Genshin Impact, which means that inventory limit is going up by 300. If you are currently at that limit, you can only automatically add one, two, and three-star Artifacts when trying to quickly destroy them for Mora. Once 4.0 appears, the limit will immediately jump to 1,800 and four-star Artifacts will be included in the auto add section. If you’ve never destroyed them before, doing so is possible for ones you haven’t improved and nets you Mora.

As for the Genshin Impact Mystic Offering Artifact sets being added, you’ll be able to exchange what you have for the following in 4.0.

FFVII Remake Red XIII Cait Sith glass

Square Enix opened pre-orders for two new FFVII Remake rocks glasses inspired by characters Red XIII and Cait Sith. Each glass costs 1,518 JPY (or about $10), and they are scheduled to release on September 30, 2023. Pre-orders are now open from the Square Enix online eStore in Japan. Given how Square Enix works, we could see pre-orders open in its worldwide storefronts eventually as well.

The glasses have curved walls and are transparent, but each has colored engravings of Red XIII and Cait Sith. Their faces are engraved on one side, with Red XIII’s tail and Cait Sith’s cape and tail on the other side of the glass.

You can check out the FFVII Remake Red XIII and Cait Sith glasses in more detail here:
[gallery size="medium" ids="975699,975700,975701,975702,975703,975704" link="file"]

In the original FFVII, Red XIII and Cait Sith are party members that join Cloud and the rest in their world search for Sephiroth. In the FFVII Remake, Red XIII only appears an AI-controlled guest party member due to him only appearing near the end of the game. Meanwhile, Cait Sith has a brief cameo, since in the original FFVII the character joins the party at the Gold Saucer, well after the end of the Remake.

Other recently revealed Final Fantasy VII Remake merchandise includes a necklace based on the logo of the Seventh Heaven bar.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Developer Recommends Deleting Early Access Save Files

Baldurs Gate 3 Early Access save files

Ahead of the 1.0 release of Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC, Larian Studios recommended players delete all their Early Access save files. Furthermore, removing any mods and making sure they don’t re-download is also recommended. This is to help avoid any complications for the 1.0 release of the game. Larian Studios will share more information regarding the Early Access save files and mods before the game launches on August 3, 2023.

Additionally, the developers recommended fully uninstalling the game after deleting the Early Access save files. Doing this will reduce the possibility of file conflicts once the 1.0 version of the game starts downloading. It should also mean a reduced chance of needing to troubleshoot.

Larian Studios will provide a full guide to complete this process before the game launches on August 3, 2023.

You can read the post by Larian Studios regarding the Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Access save files here:

The Baldur’s Gate 3 PC release date is August 3, 2023, and the PS5 one is September 6, 2023. PC players can immediately begin playing via Early Access, but are recommended to delete their save files before launch.

Star Trek: Resurgence Disc Version Out This Fall, PS4 Owners Get Free PS5 Upgrade

A physical version of the recently-released, previously digital-only Star Trek: Resurgence comes out October 6 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Xbox One.

PS4 owners get a free upgrade to the PS5 version (currently the PS5 plays the PS4 version in emulation). The new versions include a raft of bug fixes and quality-of-life additions, too.

Star Trek: Resurgence is a third-person narrative adventure game developed by Dramatic Labs, a team that includes over 20 former Telltale staff. It tells an original story set shortly after Star Trek: The Next Generation and follows the crew of the U.S.S. Resolute.

IGN’s Star Trek: Resurgence review beamed up a 7/10: “The story of Star Trek: Resurgence does an excellent job of capturing what makes Star Trek work by presenting strong characters and tough decisions. Some storylines lack closure and it doesn’t always run smoothly, but its heart is in the right place,” we said.

Circana’s U.S. video game market results for June 2023 reveals Blizzard’s action role-playing game is the third best-selling game of 2023 so far, behind only Hogwarts Legacy and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. That stat doesn’t come as a surprise: Diablo 4 is Blizzard’s fastest-selling game of all time with over 10 million players. The launch of Diablo 4 even propelled Blizzard’s financials to record levels.

Final Fantasy 16, meanwhile, was the second best-selling game of June in the U.S. Its sales have become something of a battleground after Square Enix announced the PlayStation 5 exclusive sold three million copies during launch week. Square Enix told IGN these launch sales were “extremely strong”, but sources speaking to IGN said sales had slowed considerably since then.

Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 was the third best-selling game of June in the U.S. and is the 10th best-selling game of 2023 so far. Mat Piscatella, executive director of video games for Circana, said Street Fighter 6’s launch month sales more than doubled those of Street Fighter 5, which came out in February 2016. In fact, Street Fighter 6 enjoyed the highest launch month dollar sales for a fighting game since the April 2019 launch of Mortal Kombat 11.

TMNT's Original Arcade Game Was a Licensed Game Done Right

More pizza toppings don’t mean a better pizza. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might like to put a bunch of ridiculous nonsense on their pies, but it’s hard to deny the simple pleasures of a slice of plain cheese or pepperoni when it’s done right. A similar declaration could be made about video games, and as cool as it is to see the medium constantly pushing the boundaries of new technology, sometimes less is more. Take for instance Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, which went back to basics, iterating on everything that made the original TMNT arcade game so beloved without losing sight of its charm.

Shredder’s Revenge capitalized on millennial nostalgia for the original arcade game. Some of that nostalgia might be tangled up with fondness for the original cartoon or happy childhood memories, but it’s worth putting into perspective exactly how much that original arcade game was the intersection of great ideas implemented well at the center of a maelstrom of “right place, right time” circumstances.

The fact that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and video games intersected at all was serendipitous, and almost definitely wasn’t part of the plan from day one. While Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were having their “Eureka!” moment over a drawing of a tortoise with nunchaku in late 1983, the video game industry was collapsing on both ends. The recession caused by “atari shock” decimated the home console market, while the arcade scene was floundering due to the oversaturation of mediocre games and backlash to moral panic.

Microsoft Reveals What to Expect From Xbox at Gamescom 2023

Microsoft has said attendees at gamescom 2023 can expect to see the largest booth Xbox has ever had as well as the return of Xbox FanFest.

Over 30 games across 150 gaming stations are set for the booth, Microsoft said, alongside a 300-seat theatre in which Bethesda Game Studios will show a Starfield presentation, Turn 10 will show a Forza presentation, and Oxide Games will show an Ara: History Untold presentation. Neither Starfield, Forza, nor Ara: History Untold will be playable at gamescom, however.

Microsoft is yet to announce an Xbox showcase for gamescom 2023 and it looks like the focus is firmly on games set to come out in 2023 or the early part of 2024. There’s no mention of Playground’s Fable, Obsidian’s Avowed, Compulsion Games' South of Midnight, inXile's Clockwork Revolution, or Ninja Theory’s Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2.
