Times & Galaxy sees you shaping the narrative as a robo-journalist

I've played a couple of games where I've been cast as a journalist, but in most of these games you're a journalist in the same way Tintin is a journalist - kind of, but not too much. Beyond Good & Evil probably takes it the most seriously. You're a photographer trying to get the truth about an alien invasion. You break into places and have fights and solve puzzles, but you also get the shots you're after before you get out. But still, you know, the fights, the breaking in, the solving puzzles. You're a journalist, kind of...

Times & Galaxy, which was announced this week goes much further. (There's a demo here so you can see it for yourself.) Suddenly I'm a journalist who's expected to go and research actual events, build a sense of what happened and then sculpt a story afterwards. Sure, it's the future and I'm also a robot exploring a colourful sci-fi world, but it goes a lot deeper than I had expected.

On my first mission I'm sent to a planet to write up an RTA. But as I chat to people things start to get strange. A ship crashed because the cops were chasing it, but the cops won't take any blame for a crime they caused in the line of duty. Furthermore, there didn't appear to actually be anybody in crashed ship, and the flight recorder is missing.

Pokémon Go developer dismisses "incorrect" report that claimed revenue down to lowest since 2018

UPDATE 11/5/23: App store analytics firm AppMagic has now responded to Niantic's claim its report on Pokémon Go revenue was "incorrect".

"Surely, there's an inevitable inaccuracy in our estimates as in any other service of the same type as ours. For such large apps like Pokemon Go monthly discrepancy is usually around +/- five percent," an AppMagic spokesperson told Eurogamer.

"What we do to estimate revenue is analyse positions of apps in the platforms' top grossing apps rankings. And since it's publicly available data, anyone can see that the current position of Pokémon Go (on average across countries, weighted on their impact) in March-April 2023 was at the lowest since February 2018.

Former Nintendo boss has Taken Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom leaks into own hands

Former Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aimé has seen those Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom leaks and the people boasting about having acquired the game early, and he is not happy about it. In fact, the whole situation has made him embrace his inner Liam Neeson.

In response to one Twitter user sharing an image of their Switch home screen, which had Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom lined up and ready to play (presumably obtained by illegitimate means, but I can't say for sure), the Nintendo of America alum decided to flex his muscle by quoting from the Neeson-fronted action film Taken.

"I don't know what you want. What I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career, skills that make me a nightmare for people like you," Fils-Aimé wrote.

We've updated our earlier story, below, to reflect this.

ORIGNAL STORY 11.45am UK: Prime Matter, the publisher behind the System Shock remake, recently boasted about using AI to create artwork of its game's own evil AI. And, well, things slightly backfired.

The Star Wars Canon: The Definitive Guide

Star Wars is a biggie. Not only is it really good, but there's also tons of it. Like tons and tons. What starts as a neat little trilogy, eventually leaks into a trilogy of film trilogies, spin-off movies, TV shows, and books. And these spawn comics, audio-dramas, short stories, and even more.

IGN has put together a definitive list of every piece of canon Star Wars content to help you keep track of it all. Whether you're brand new to Star Wars and can't wait to explore every inch of the galaxy far, far away, or you're a seasoned traveler looking to tick off the final few elusive stories, this is the page for you.

Let's also make clear what we mean by canon. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, they essentially reset the Star Wars universe. They turned almost everything outside of the core six films into something called Legends, which takes place in a universe where the Sequel Trilogy never happened.

Everything published afterwards is categorised as canon, and (more or less) sticks to one cohesive universe. No new Legends content will be published, whereas the canon Star Wars content will likely continue to grow for years and decades to come.

Vote now for your favourite space games of all time

Hello folks. I meant to kick off this list last month, but I accidentally put it in the wrong airlock in the RPS Treehouse and poof. Off it went. (I also ran out of time to put our voting form together - apologies!). But as we all continue zhoooming our lightsabers around in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor or jumping aboard the stellar space train in Honkai: Star Rail, it still feels like an appropriate time to ask you this all-important question: what are your favourite space games of all time?

Build and share your own Zelda dungeons on PC with this cute indie game

When Nintendo first released their level-building game Super Mario Maker, many fans hoped for a similar set of tools based on The Legend Of Zelda series. The Big N haven’t gotten around to it yet, but indie developers Rokaplay and Firechick have beaten them to the punch with Super Dungeon Maker, which just released out of early access. It’s what the name implies: a game where you can build your own classic Zelda-like dungeons, share them online, and then play through other people’s whacky creations.

How The Pale Beyond charts its own course from a melting pot of real-life polar expeditions

"What will ye do, when steel hearts break, and courage does abscond?" reads the penultimate line of The Pale Beyond’s poetic prologue. Actually, it’s less of a poem and more a call to action: how on earth will you keep a ragtag bunch of sailors alive in the harshest conditions on the planet? If you hadn’t already twigged, The Pale Beyond is a narrative survival sim that puts you in the frostbitten boots of First Mate aboard The Temperance - a coal guzzling steam ship that set out on a polar expedition in search of its sister, The Viscount, which went missing five years prior. As Captain Hunt’s second-in-command, you’ll take daily requests from the crew, manage the food rations, and settle petty squabbles on the poop deck.

Beginning life as a way for co-founders Michael Bell and Thomas Hislop to create World of Warcraft mods, Bellular Studios grew alongside its gaming and Warcraft YouTube channels into a fully-fledged development team based out of their hometown of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Pale Beyond is their debut game that fittingly draws on Ireland’s rich maritime history, although, as Hislop tells me, this wasn’t always the plan. "We initially didn’t set out to do so, but it quickly emerged as a core influence that we kept finding ourselves drawn back to," he says. "The further we delved into the golden age of exploration, and its very local routes, the more it resonated with us personally."

Junji Ito Talks Magic: The Gathering and the Fear of AI Art

Junji Ito Magic the gathering cards ai art

In a recent interview with 4Gamer, popular horror manga artist Junji Ito talked about his experience working with Wizards of the Coast designing illustration for Magic: The Gathering cards, and the fear of art created through AI technology. Wizards of the Coast directly contacted Junji Ito, and the artist didn’t know about MTG prior. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

Junji Ito said that after researching Magic: The Gathering, he was impressed by the fantasy worlds and beautiful illustrations used for the cards, and felt that he wanted to work with Wizards of the Coast.

Drawing the final illustration for Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines took Ito about three days of work. In addition to that, there was a previous period of trial and error creating rough sketches that the artist and Wizards of the Coast went through until a final design was decided. Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines had three different initial sketches before the final one was chosen.

CMA investigating effects of AI on competition and consumers

The Competition and Markets Authority is launching an investigation into AI foundation models, following the emergence of AI within several industries.

AI is very much a topic of concern for the games industry right now. Recent releases, such as High On Life, have used AI during development and its use has raised eyebrows among players.

There was a mix of concerns and excitement regarding AI among developers at GDC in March, Chris Tapsell reported. Following the UK government's white paper on AI which was published in March, the CMA is now assessing potential effects of the technology on markets and consumers.

Bugsnax coming to iOS app store, with new touch-based control scheme

Bugsnax, the game that tasks its players with finding and capturing the eponymous half-bug-half-snack creatures on the mysterious island of Snaktooth, is heading to the iOS app store "this summer".

On its release, it will boast touch screen controls, but will also support "a wide array of third party gamepads" developer Young Horses says.

Other than that, news on this upcoming release is fairly barren, but the developer has promised more details (I presume such as a firm release date rather than the broad release window we have now) in the future.

Niantic Refutes Claims That Pokémon Go’s Revenue Has Slumped To Five Year Low

11 months 4 weeks ago

Pokémon Go developer Niantic has refuted claims that April saw the game accrue its worst monthly revenue total in five years as fans protest changes to the game’s raid system.

"We generally don't comment on third-party estimates of our revenue as they are often incorrect, which is the case here," said a Niantic spokesperson in an email to Eurogamer. "Our revenue so far in 2023 is up on last year."

That response refutes a recent report from Mobilegamer.Biz, which claimed that Pokémon Go’s revenue had slumped from $42 million In March, down to just $34.7 million in the month of April, representing the app’s lowest monthly revenue since February 2018.

News of the alleged decline, and Niantic's rebuttal, comes as Pokémon Go fans rail against changes made to the app’s raid system. Previously, the social distancing and lockdown procedures brought in to combat the COVID-19 pandemic pushed Niantic into creating remote play features for its game that allowed gamers to attend raids from the safety of their homes.

Phil Spencer Takes ‘Full Responsibility’ For Redfall's Poor Release

11 months 4 weeks ago

Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has addressed the significant negative response to Redfall, the co-op vampire slaying FPS that recently launched to a large number of negative reviews and player disappointment.

Talking to the Kinda Funny Xcast, Spencer said that he is “upset with myself” and that he’s “gonna take full responsibility for launching a game that needs to be great.” While he acknowledged the disappointment that comes from a $70 game arriving in the condition Redfall has, he also offered support for the game’s developers, Arkane Austin, noting that he will not “push against the creative aspirations of our teams.”

When asked for his initial response to the launch of Redfall, which dropped as an Xbox console exclusive this week, Spencer said “There’s nothing that’s more difficult for me than disappointing the Xbox community, and just kind of watch the community lose confidence [and] be disappointed.

“I’m disappointed, I’m upset with myself. I kind of revisit our process. I think back to the announcement of 60 frames-per-second, then we weren’t shipping 60 frames-per-second, that was our punch in the chin - rightfully - a couple of weeks ago.”

See Cammy Beat Up a Truck in Street Fighter 6

See Cammy Beat Up a Truck in Street Fighter 6

Capcom offered another glimpse at what to expect from Street Fighter 6's Arcade mode, and the latest teaser showed Cammy taking on a truck. As people go through the mode, there will apparently be minigames akin to the ones in past Street Fighter games. Among them are ones beating up cars and hitting back at basketballs. There will also be changes to earn scores, then share them to place on a leaderboard.

Here's Capcom's latest Street Fighter 6 Arcade mode teaser starring Cammy and Guile. For the first part, Cammy is beating up a semi-trailer truck. After a point, she causes the hood and parts to fall off. After that, Guile is shown hitting basketballs being thrown at them to “counter” the attack. In his segment, he already countered 9 and is dealing with a remaining nine.

Genshin Impact Trailer Explains Changsheng and Baizhu’s Contract

Genshin Impact Trailer Explains Changsheng and Baizhu’s Contract

Ever since Baizhu was introduced in Genshin Impact, he’s always been seen with the talking snake Changsheng around his neck. Now that he’s a playable character, his Lagenaria Act 1 Story Quest is also live. Part of it explains the connection between the two, and HoYoVerse shared the cinematic going over their relationship and past online.

Editor’s Note: The Genshin Impact Changsheng teaser features spoilers for the Baizhu Story Quest.

The video explains Changsheng’s full history. Apparently, years ago, a doctor dealing with a plague headed to Chenyu Vale to find an “herblord.” That is Changsheng, who was apparently ill and dying. Any doctor who made a contract with the snake would be able to use extraordinary healing abilities at the cost of tying their life to hers and dying young as a result. Since that first meeting, each doctor’s passed the contract on to one of their apprentices. As a result, Baizhu formed a contract with Changsheng in Genshin Impact, which involves him accepting a shorter lifespan and illness in exchange for being able to heal people.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFZcl2vTtm8&ab_channel=GenshinImpact
This is reflected in Baizhu's moveset. He acts as a healer in Genshin Impact, with snake imagery when he attacks or uses abilities.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Baizhu banner is available until May 23, 2023.

Hear Some Songs from the Crymachina Soundtrack

Hear Some Songs from the Crymachina Soundtrack

People get a chance to hear some songs from the Crymachina soundtrack. NIS America shared an eleven minute video going over 10 songs from the soundtrack. The last time NIS America showed off Crymachina, it involved a look at the game's opening movie.

Here's the Crymachina soundtrack sampler. It kicks things off with the opening theme song, "NotToNotice();" by Hikaru Tono. All songs on the soundtrack were composed by Sakuzyo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwnPW4YR7kw&ab_channel=NISAmerica

Notably, the description for the Crymachina soundtrack noted an October 24, 2023 release date. However, NIS America only mentioned a Fall 2023 release prior to this video's debut and the end of the video reiterates that window.
[gallery columns="1" size="full" ids="961809" link="file"]

As a reminder, people can get the full soundtrack with one of the physical options when Crymachina releases. NIS America announced a Limited Edition. This PS4, PS5, and Switch option costs $99.99. That comes with the Crymachina Hanamaru soundtrack CD. However, we don't know exactly how many songs will be on the album. People also get an Eden Database art book, an acrylic display, a cloth poster, and an art print in this edition of the game.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer apologises for Redfall's disastrous launch: "We let a lot of people down this week"

11 months 4 weeks ago

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has personally apologised for the failure of Arkane's Redfall, which was widely panned this week.

The triple-A first-party shooter has suffered a disastrous launch, with players and reviewers criticising everything from the blandness of its world to the many bugs, its uninspired looter shooter mechanics to performance issues. It is Arkane's worst-reviewed game, and has a "mostly negative" user review rating on Steam.

The failure of Redfall has also brought into question Microsoft's ability to launch high-quality games with any regularity after a string of high-profile flops, and has caused some to cancel their Game Pass subscription between now and the upcoming launch of Bethesda's Starfield in September.

The Most Powerful Jedi Face-Off: The Winner Revealed

11 months 4 weeks ago

Happy Star Wars Day! Once again, May the Fourth has arrived to give us all a day to celebrate that wonderful galaxy far, far away together. In honor of this special day and the recent launch of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, we asked you to help us decide which Jedi was the most powerful of them all. Now, After almost two million 1v1 battles with match-ups like pre-Darth Vader Anakin Skywalker vs. Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Qui-Gon Jinn, a winner has been chosen.

So, which competitor claimed the top spot for the most powerful Jedi of all time? Drumroll please...

Move aside, Anakin Skywalker. Master Yoda has risen above all others to claim the top spot as the most powerful Jedi of all time and the true chosen one according to IGN's audience. He won pretty handily as well, as he was victorious in 89,756 of his 95,243 battles and had a win percentage of 94.2%.

Yoda is one of the most iconic characters in all of Star Wars and was not only a leading member of the Jedi Council and helped train countless Jedi to reach their full potential, but he was also a key part in assisting Luke Skywalker in fulfilling his destiny to stop the Empire and redeem his father, Darth Vader.

Speaking of Darth Vader and, more specifically, who he was before he fell to the Dark Side, Anakin Skywalker placed third and was bested only by Yoda and his former master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. It was a close battle too as they both had a win percentage of 88.8%.

Xbox Did ‘A Better Job’ With Assisting Starfield Development Than Redfall

11 months 4 weeks ago

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has offered some kind of reassurance to fans that Starfield will hopefully launch in a better state than this week’s Xbox console exclusive, Redfall, claiming that the publisher “did a better job” in terms of assisting on development.

Discussing the development of Redfall on a new episode of the Kinda Funny Xcast, Spencer explained how acquisition of a studio that is mid-way through development of a game - as it did with both Bethesda Game Studios and Arkane Austin, working on Starfield and Redfall respectively - can be a challenge, and that Xbox needs to improve its process.

“When we acquire studios, there are games that are in development, and then there’s things that are either really early in development or not even conceived yet. I think we need to improve in engaging with games that are mid-way through production when they become part of Xbox,” he said.

“We didn’t do a good job early on in engaging Arkane Austin to really help them understand what it meant to be part of Xbox and part of first-party, and use some of our internal resources to help them move along that journey even faster. We left them to work on the game…”

Spencer went on to say that getting in on these collaboration efforts earlier is the key to better success. “But when [Xbox Game Studios head] Matt Booty [and Zenimax president] Jamie Leder sit down, I think we can engage earlier with our different studios. And I do think there’s a difference when we come in when the creative is already set on a game – and that’s not washing our hands, every game we ship from our teams is an Xbox game, so we take full responsibility for it”.
