Fortnite is now an Olympic esport

Fortnite has been named as a late addition to the International Olympic Committee's latest stab at esports.

Back in March, the IOC announced the Olympic Esports Series, a competition set to feature nine virtual sports, represented by a range of video games such as Just Dance and Gran Turismo. Today brings word that Fortnite will also now be included, as part of a 10th discipline: "sport shooting".

The whole thing will also be part of a crossover in Fortnite (because of course), with a specially-designed island in Fortnite designed to promote the Olympics' Esports event.

After Redfall's launch woes, where next for Xbox?

This week on the Eurogamer Newscast we discuss the latest headache for Microsoft - Redfall's negative launch reaction - and the eye-opening comments made by Xbox boss Phil Spencer as he subsequently discussed what went wrong.

We also look beyond Redfall at the pressure now on Microsoft to deliver with Starfield, following various first-party delays and disappointments over the past few years. As Xbox takes stock of its progress this console generation, big questions remain over how it competes in the years to come - with some potentially gloomy (for Microsoft) answers.

Joining me to share their thoughts are Eurogamer's Ed Nightingale and Victoria Kennedy.

Dan Heng’s Best Relic Sets and Light Cones Speed Him Up

Best Honkai: Star Rail Dan Heng Relic and Light Cone Build

Like March 7th, Dan Heng is a great, free, four-star Honkai: Star Rail character who can easily become one of your best assets with many different Relic sets and Light Cone builds. The thing with him is to remember two things. You want him to be as fast as possible so he attacks often. You also want him to be dealing a lot of damage.

What are the best Light Cones for a Dan Heng build in Honkai: Star Rail?

I’m going to go ahead and borrow a lot of my recommendations for Seele here, because Dan Heng works similarly. You want him attacking often. So Adversarial, a three-star Light Cone, increases his speed by 10% after each enemy he beats. I’d also go with Darting Arrow, as it boosts his attack by at least 24% temporarily after beating an enemy.

As a four-star option, I went with River Flows in Spring since it’s… all I have. It boosts Dan Heng’s speed by at least 12% and damage by 24% until he takes damage, but then brings that buff back after his next turn. The Only Silence Remains Light Cone with him actually on it is good too, as it at least increases his attack by 16% and, if there are one or two enemies around, increases his critical rate by at least 12%.

Genshin Impact’s A Parade of Providence is a Kaveh Showcase

Genshin Impact A Parade of Providence is a Kaveh Showcase

When we’ve seen Kaveh ahead of his playable debut in Genshin Impact, he hasn’t always been shown in the best light. Yes, we know he’s a talented architect and Akademiya scholar. But whenever we’ve seen him or heard him referenced, HoYoVerse tended to focus on his faults or more annoying qualities for the sake of humor. He let Dori take advantage of him while building The Palace of Alcazarzaray, leaving him bankrupt. He’s constantly quibbling with Alhaitham and getting worked up over things. However, while A Parade of Providence is a showcase giving many Sumeru characters their moment, this Genshin Impact especially is something of a Kaveh redemption piece.

Editor’s Note: There will be spoilers for the Genshin Impact A Parade of Providence event in the article below.

Hogwarts Legacy Has Amassed Over $1 Billion

Hogwarts Legacy has now sold 15 million copies and made over $1 billion, and that number is expected to notably increase as the game becomes available on previous-generation platforms.

Talking as part of the company’s earnings call earlier today, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said: “Hogwarts Legacy has amassed more than $1 billion in retail sales and over 15 million units sold worldwide to date, and today the team is launching the game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms.”

The sales numbers make Hogwarts Legacy WB’s fifth $1 billion-plus gaming franchise, putting it in a stable with LEGO, DC, Mortal Kombat, and Game of Thrones.

But sales are expected to keep growing. Not only does Hogwarts Legacy launch on PS4 and Xbox One today, but a Switch version will arrive in July. JB Perrette, CEO of global streaming and games at WB Discovery, noted during the earnings call that that the Switch version was important for sales.

“We see that as probably a much bigger install base and a fan base," he said, noting that Nintendo has a huge install base in Japan, where Harry Potter "skews very strongly in terms of popularity".

"We see a much bigger upside probably from that release, certainly than the [PS5 and Xbox Series release]” he predicted.

RPS Time Capsule: the games worth saving from 2003

Welcome back to another RPS Time Capsule. Yep, instant wrinkles like I've just been caught in a Death Stranding rain shower. I better finish this introduction quickly before I disintegrate to a pile of dust - much like all the other games from this year that didn't make it into this year's Time Capsule. Come and find out which ones we've decided to save below.

Jake Solomon uncut: here's our post-Firaxis GDC interview in full

Over the last week and a bit, we've been steadily releasing a bunch of stories from our big, hour-long chat with XCOM and Marvel's Midnight Suns director Jake Solomon that took place at this year's GDC. It was a wide-ranging interview, looking at what Solomon plans to do next now that he's left Firaxis, and how he feels about his 20+ year career there. You can read the condensed version of that interview here, but as a treat for RPS supporters, I thought you might like to read our chat in full. There's still a lot I couldn't quite squeeze into separate news stories here, and I think (and hope) you'll find it interesting to read as a whole. So here it is. All 8760-odd words of it. Enjoy.

Lunark is more than just a love letter to Flashback

Aeons ago, I wrote about the Leftfield collection that was supposed to happen at Rezzed 2020. Ploughing through several emotions without comment, in amongst the games that we never got to see as a result of Things Happening was an earlier version of Lunark, a clearly Flashback-influenced action puzzle platformer.

I've kind of worried about it ever since, so I was glad to see it released recently, and gladder still that it's a lot of fun.

How to View a Honkai: Star Rail Memory Bubble

How to View a Honkai: Star Rail Memory Bubble

As you go through Honkai: Star Rail, you might see a blue bubble called a Memory Bubble around. However, approaching one to investigate it won’t net any reaction early on. This is because you actually need to speak to one of Herta’s dolls on the station to figure out what’s going on. Fortunately, once you do go through the conversation, it’s easy to start reading through these events and picking up extra Credits.

I unlocked the ability to view any Memory Bubble in Honkai: Star Rail by talking with the Herta puppet in the Storage Zone. I was at Trailblaze level 21 when I finally got around to doing so. She’s standing at the point below, and you need to cross the light bridge to reach her. It’s the same puzzle found in "Signs of Fragmentum III". After you get to her and agree to the NDA, you'll get the ability to view any Memory Bybble in Honkai: Star Rail.
[gallery size="full" ids="961849,961992,961993" link="file"]

Actually checking one out is fairly easy. All you need to do is approach it and select "Touch the Memory Bubble." The screen will go back, and you'll be able to read through someone's experience on Herta Space Station. You'll then also get 1,000 Credits for your find. There are 20 total, adding up to 20,000 Credits. Finding them all gets you the Sensory Socialization achievement and five Stellar Jades.

Review: Redfall Fails to Deliver

Redfall Review

A small, provincial city is plagued with vampires and cultists, with all escape barred off by some strange supernatural force that overcame this previously quaint place. A ragtag group of heroes are the only thing standing between this bloodthirsty threat and the end of humanity as we know it. If it sounds like a mid-1980s B horror flick, that's because this is what Redfall is, and it doesn't pretend to be anything different. Bold in its approach that feels strangely steeped in nostalgia, it retreads old ground, but often stumbles over poorly implemented game mechanics that leave this game feeling unfinished and under realized. And while Redfall was delayed to its 2023 launch, it feels like this game could have spent more time in the oven.

PlayStation's Concrete Genie studio PixelOpus is shutting down

PixelOpus, the PlayStation Studios developer behind Concrete Genie, is shutting down.

Based in San Mateo, California, PixelOpus was established with the express purpose of giving young developers a start in the industry, and was formally announced as a new internal Sony studio in 2014. It would go on to release its first game, the striking Entwined, that same year.

While PixelOpus' initial outing received a mixed critical reception, its follow-up title, Concrete Genie, fared much better in 2019. It was nominated for a BAFTA Artistic Achievement award, and Eurogamer called it a "small, perfectly formed adventure" in our Recommended review.

Destiny 2's standalone season pass is getting a 20% price hike

Bungie has announced a 20% price increase for Destiny 2's standalone season pass, but the studio says its all-in-one Annual Pass won't be affected by the move.

Destiny 2 first added a battle-pass-style Season Pass as part of its third year of content, back in 2019. Since then, each three-month-long Season Pass has been priced at 1,000 Silver (approximately £9/$10 USD depending on premium currency bundle), making this the first price bump since their introduction.

Bungie's newly announced 20% price increase - which won't affect the Lightfall standard edition season pass or Lightfall and Annual Pass edition - means each new Season Pass will now cost 1,200 Silver. Additionally, Destiny 2's Season Pass + 10 Ranks Bundle will cost 2,200 Silver instead of 2,000.

Nintendo Showcases Mysterious Symbol in Tears of the Kingdom

Tears of the Kingdom Ultrahand symbol

Nintendo frequently shared screenshots showcasing new mechanics and elements that will appear in the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and the latest one features a mysterious symbol. The new screenshot posted on the official Japanese The Legend of Zelda Twitter account focuses on a mysterious looking stone door with a floating Ultrahand symbol found in one of the new Sky Islands.

The tweet in question shows Link in front of a stone door decorated with two dragon stone carvings that are projecting a symbol similar to that of Link’s new Ultrahand ability. The tweet is accompanied by a Japanese caption that translates to “We found something mysterious in one of the Sky Islands again. What is this mysterious pattern that stands out?”

The door and symbol are standing over a sand pool with perfect waves. This might indicate the location of a new shrine or hidden treasure, and the Ultrahand symbol might be a requirement to activate it. We won’t know for sure what this mysterious symbol is until May 12, 2023, when The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will come out.

Here's 10 minutes of SOMA dev's non-linear WW1 horror Amnesia: The Bunker

Amnesia: The Bunker, the new "unscripted" WW1 horror from SOMA developer Frictional Games, is almost upon us following a number of delays, and with its 23rd May release date looming, the studio has shared 10 new minutes of gameplay to ponder.

The Bunker, for a bit of context, is the fourth game in Frictional's Amnesia series, which began with 2010's acclaimed The Dark Descent. Since then we've seen a Chinese-Room-developed successor in 2013's A Machine for Pigs, and Frictional returned to the series in 2021 with its ambitious Amnesia: Rebirth, set in the Algerian desert.

Frictional's latest, Amnesia: The Bunker, marks a notable departure for the series, trading traditionally linear tales of horror for "unscripted" scares in a nightmarish semi-open-world as players - in the role of French solider Henri Clément - attempt to flee a relentless, "adaptive" otherworldly creature through the claustrophobic confines of the titular subterranean space.

Saturnalia originally released last October, taking players on a journey through the ancient, ever-shifting town of the title in adventure heavily inspired by Sardinia folklore.

The gist is players - switching between four different characters at will - must explore, avoid the things in the shadows, and solve the mystery of Saturnalia in order to earn their freedom. Only, should all four characters die, the town will reassert itself, reconfiguring its labyrinthine layout for another attempt - albeit with narrative and puzzle progress retained.

Xbox Series Hex: Why Won’t Xbox’s Big Game Problem Go Away?

Phil Spencer has accomplished a lot of great things during his nine-plus years as Head of Xbox. Under his leadership, Xbox has made incredible strides in:

  • Accessibility: If Xbox isn’t the industry leader in this, they are at the top of any list, both on the software side and the hardware side.
  • Game preservation: Backwards compatibility was Spencer’s first major initiative when he took over the business, and it’s been such a success that it’s been normalized across the industry.
  • Hardware power and reliability: The Xbox One S, One X, Series X, and Series S have all been quiet, powerful workhorses that haven’t suffered a single widespread issue, making the Xbox 360’s Red Ring of Death and Xbox One’s underpowered launch unit distant memories.
  • Value proposition: Xbox Game Pass, regardless of how you slice it, has been a resounding success for gamers.
  • Cloud gaming: The xCloud initiative – now a bundled feature within Xbox Game Pass Ultimate – lets you play your Xbox games from just about any device in any location.
  • DEI and culture: Microsoft and its studios now have more women and people of color in leadership roles and on development teams, taking noticeable steps to normalizing diversity in an industry whose customers come from all walks of life.

The Idol Showdown fan-made Hololive fighting game is out now, and it turns out more VTubers will eventually join its cast. To coincide with its debut, a launch trailer appeared. It noted that while there are only eight playable characters now, eventually there will be 11. It also seems the next fighter will be Streams Charts' most-watched female streamer of 2023 so far, VTuber Usada Pekora.

Here's the launch trailer for Idol Showdown, which begins with gameplay footage of the Hololive fighting game. We first see already revealed cast members like Aki Rosenthal, Hoshimachi Suisei, Inugami Korone, and Tokino Sora. We also get to see the cameos of other VTubers who show up in supporting roles, like Kureiji Ollie and Nanashi Mumei. You also have “Star Call-in” and “Off-Collab” cameos from other members, like Houshou Marine.

It’s at the 12 second mark that the additional fighters are first teased. In the character select diamond, there are three spaces with question marks.
