Final Fantasy 15 Criticism Is A Reason Final Fantasy 16 Isn’t An Open World Game

Final Fantasy XVI 16 game informer exclusive coverage 15 criticism open world

After playing several hours of Final Fantasy XVI in Square Enix’s Tokyo, Japan, offices for this month’s cover story, I spend about 20 minutes in one of the game’s various open field areas. FFXVI isn’t an open world game, but it features several large areas where players, as Clive, are free to explore the location, fight monsters, pick up side quests, find treasure, and more.

I spend about 20 minutes checking out every nook and cranny of one of the earlier open field locations in the game. After that, I check my map to see how much I had covered in the area I was permitted to explore – it was about an eighth, which is to say these zones are massive. But much of the game occurs in focused, dungeon-esque missions where players make their way through more linear areas, defeating monsters and bosses along the way.

After playing through this, I asked producer Naoki Yoshida why the team opted for open fields rather than a full open world game, especially in a time when the style is more popular than ever. One of the more surprising reasons is 2016’s Final Fantasy XV

Genshin Impact Kirara Trailer Shows Off Her Moveset

Now that Kirara joined the Genshin Impact cast, HoYoVerse shared a Collected Miscellany video for her. These are videos dedicated to showing off new characters’ moveset and abilities. As usual, Yuri “Dainsleif” Lowenthal acts as narrator going over what people can expect from the four-star Dendro swordswoman.

After introducing Kirara, Dainsleif starts by mentioning how her Exploration Talent keeps animals from running from the party. This makes it easier to get chilled meat, fowl, or raw meat. From there, the video looks more closely at the attacks in her moveset. It shows her Boxcutter Normal Attack, a Meow-teor Kick Elemental Skill that can also be held for faster movement and travel, and her Secret Art: Surprise Dispatch Elemental Burst AOE attack. It also brings up her Passive abilities, which can add extra Shield of Safe Transport or attack buffs

Here’s the full “Collected Miscellany - Kirara: Meow-mentous Speed” trailer.

As a four-star, people will be able to get Kirara in Genshin Impact all the time. However, she is a focus unit on the Yae Miko and Yoimiya banners, which means it will be easier to get her until those end on June 13, 2023.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and Kirara is now a permanent part of the gacha.

Abzû developer unveils striking desert-surfing adventure Sword of the Sea

If you enjoyed ThatGameCompany's seminal Journey, and you loved Giant Squid Studios' Abzû, then you might very well like the latter developer's newly announced Sword of the Sea, which looks like both of those games lovingly squished together into a brand-new whole.

Sword of the Sea is Giant Squid's third release - following on from 2016's deep sea adventure Abzû and 2020's The Pathless - and its announcement trailer, aired during Sony's latest PlayStation Showcase, focuses on a lone explorer, known as The Wraith, sand-surfing their way through a strikingly rendered desert, all undulanting sands and ancient temples, that suddenly gives way to roaring waves and flying marine life.

Giant Squid's creative director Matt Nava (who served as art director on Journey, in case you're wondering why the art style looks familiar) calls Sword of the Sea the studio's "most ambitious game to date" on the PlayStation Blog, noting its "Hoversword" traversal sytem - a mix of "snowboard, skateboard, and hoverboard all in one" - is core to the experience.

World of Warcraft Introduces WoW Token Into Wrath Classic, Sends Community Into Chaos

Blizzard has just made a major change to how World of Warcraft Classic: Wrath of the Lich King's economy works, and the community is completely furious. Yesterday, it introduced WoW Tokens into Wrath Classic.

On its face, the announcement looks relatively innocuous:

"The WoW Token is now available in Wrath of the Lich King Classic," it reads. "This in-game item is a great way to exchange gold for game time in a convenient and secure way."

Blizzard first introduced the WoW Token to World of Warcraft retail back in 2015, during the Warlords of Draenor expansion. Here's how it works: players can buy a WoW Token with real money, and then sell the WoW Token in World of Warcraft to other players for in-game gold, effectively allowing them to "buy gold" in a legitimate and authorized way. Players who purchase WoW Tokens with their in-game gold can then exchange a token for a month of game time, effectively letting them spend in-game gold to avoid paying a regular subscription fee with real money.

The idea at the time was to curb illegal gold farming operations by offering a legitimate way for players to sell in-game gold, while also letting those who had time to play but were low on real-world funds continue spending time in WoW. While the move was somewhat controversial within the community at the time, and it was never fully able to stop the illegal gold selling economy. Plus, there was a significant upheaval of the system again in 2017 when Blizzard started letting players exchange WoW Tokens for Battle.net balance, temporarily throwing the in-game economy into chaos.

Embracer Group Sees Major Partnership Deal Fall Through Last Minute

Embracer Group, the massive games holding company that's been gobbling up developers, publishers, and properties left and right over the last decade, just saw a major deal fall through unexpectedly at the last minute — one that would have possibly made the company billions.

During its full-year earnings call today, Embracer Group explained the rather unusual situation, specifically because of its impact on the company's projected earnings. According to Embracer, it had a "verbal commitment" for a major deal made in October 2022 which would have included "more than USD 2 billion in contracted development revenue over a period of six years." The partnership supposedly involved "many of the highest rated global advisories onboard with several hundred people engaged on both sides" and final paperwork was even finalized as of yesterday.

However, when Embracer asked to execute the deal ahead of its earnings, the other party pulled out unexpectedly, significantly throwing off Embracer's financial projections for the coming years.

But the mystery deal falling through isn't the only major factor impacting Embracer's projections for the coming years. Embracer also revealed in its earnings that it, like other major publishers such as Ubisoft, Take-Two, and more has had to quietly delay multiple unannounced games that were meant to launc this fiscal year.

"Consequently, several games with the potential to generate more than SEK 1 billion [$93 million] in net sales are now slated for FY 2024/25," the company said.

Prince of Persia Remake in 'Conception' Phase, Won't Be at Ubisoft Forward

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake has been rebooted again and is now in its conception phase. Furthermore, the game will not be shown at the upcoming Ubisoft Forward event on June 12 and there are no plans to remake any other game in the series.

Ubisoft provided an update about its Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake project since it was moved over to its Montreal studio from its Pune and Mumbai studios in India last year. “In terms of the development stage, we're in conception right now. Since we took over the project, we've been looking at feedback from the community and finding our own way of delivering the game,” explained Ubisoft producer Jean-Francois Naud in an interview posted to Ubisoft's blog.

He continued, “Now, we're building up the team, defining the priorities, putting prototypes together, testing elements, and looking at how we can include community feedback in the development as well. It’s still in an early stage, and players should not expect to hear more about the game this year, but rest assured that we’re all putting our strengths and heart into this project.”

Game director Michael McIntyre also explained how the game needs to be a remake rather than a remaster because it’s been 20 years since the original was released. Technology and tastes have changed since then. “I do not think a remaster would take enough of those evolutions into account; I think you need to do a remake in order to truly evolve the game to meet a modern context,” he said.

These new enemies appear to be taking Alan Wake 2 in a new folk horror direction, as theyre all wearing deer masks. Also, Remedy writer Sam Lake makes an appearance as Anderson's partner.

Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake Announced

A teaser for a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 called Metal Gear Solid Delta was shared during the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase. It showed the iconic game's main character, Snake, in a whole new look using the new graphical engine.

The trailer starts following diverse creatures in a jungle, mainly showing a snake fighting back against an alligator before finally revealing Snake hidden in the environment. This teaser follows the principle of the first game's focus on camouflage and the whole mission across the jungle. This remake will drop the number 3 for a delta (Δ) sign instead.

Konami hasn't shared much news about the franchise since series Director Hideo Kojima’s departure from the company in 2015. The last game in the franchise released without Kojima’s participation was Metal Gear Survive, which debuted to mixed reviews. Rather than a mainline entry, it was a spin-off.

Originally released in 2004, Metal Gear Solid 3 followed a young “Big Boss” still using the nickname of “Naked Snake.” In it, you had to fight against a series of professional mercenaries in order to stop Snake’s former mentor, The Boss. The game was praised due to its engaging story and groundbreaking mechanics.

Foamstars Is A Soapy Multiplayer Shooter From Square Enix

Foamstars

Today’s PlayStation Showcase saw Square Enix unveil a squeaky-clean online shooter called Foamstars.

This wacky new multiplayer shooter pits two teams of four against each other using weapons that shoot, you guessed it, foam. Battlefields are covered in soapy foam, which players can use to their advantage by creating slippery surfaces to slide at high speeds. Foam can also be used in other ways, such as to shield yourself and your teammates from attacks or create vantage points. The trailer shows off a bunch of goofy weapons and the game pretty much feels like the anti-thesis of Splatoon.

Square Enix promises to share more about Foamstars in the future, but it’s coming to PlayStation 5 and 4.

Watch Marvel's Spider-Man 2's First Explosive Gameplay Sequence

To close out today’s PlayStation Showcase, Sony and Insomniac pulled out the big webs for a new look at Spider-Man 2. The long-awaited sequel is now targeting a release this fall, and an extended gameplay sequence showed us what we can expect.

An opening cinematic reveals some insight into the villainous Kraven the Hunter. Tired of easy prey in the deep jungle, one of his minions suggests a move to a new hunting ground in New York, where the likes of Spider-Man, Black Cat, and Tombstone promise more challenging targets.

The action jumps to six months later in Queens, as a black-suited Peter Parker bursts from a basement to battle some of the Hunter’s goons. The gameplay sequence that follows is impressive, showing off Spider-Man’s new symbiote abilities, which allow for an array of tentacle attacks that can often bring down many opponents at once.

After the battle, Peter learns Kraven’s team is hunting Doctor Connors, otherwise known as the Lizard. And since the hunt is happening in Harlem, he won’t be able to get there in time. He immediately calls Miles, and the perspective changes, suggesting the game (while single-player) allows for change-ups between the two Spider-Man leads.
