Age of Empires 2's Return of Rome DLC revisits a classic series expansion

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is readying to reach even further into the series' past with the announcement of its Return of Rome DLC, a "new form" of the original Age of Empires' Rise of Rome expansion that's coming to PC and consoles on 16th May.

There's quite a lot going on in Rise of Rome - which purchasers will need to switch to from the main screen in order to access its new stuff - but the most notable addition for series fans is arguably the return of all 16 civilisations from the original Age of Empires and Rise of Rome.

That means the Assyrians, Babylonians, Carthaginians, Choson, Egyptians, Greeks, Hittites, Macedonians, Minoans, Palmyrans, Persians, Phoenicians, Romans, Shang, Sumerians, and Yamato will all be playable in Rise of Rome, with the Romans being unique in that they'll also be available to play in Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition's base game.

There’s a lot to enjoy in Assassin’s Creed games, and many of their best attributes can be found in the games we’ve compiled below. As we await the release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage later this year, these are 9 games we recommend for Assassin’s Creed fans, whether you come to the series for its rich open worlds, historical fiction, mythological exploration, or old-school stealth-action gameplay.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

For fans of Assassin’s Creed’s combat, RPG mechanics, and open-world design.

In evolving Assassin’s Creed’s core mechanics from stealth-action to action-RPG, Ubisoft cited Skyrim, Fallout, and The Witcher 3 among its inspirations, though none is more apparent than CD Projekt’s 2015 RPG epic.

Let Me Solo Her Finishes Elden Ring With Every Enemy as Malenia

Let Me Solo Her, the Elden Ring player who beat Malenia hundreds of times for those who couldn't best the game's hardest boss, has proven once again that Malenia should be afraid of him. He recently completed Elden Ring with a mod that turns every enemy into her.

Last month, he sought after this challenge with only a few rules, the first being that he couldn't level up his vigor, a feature that affects how much damage you can take, with the next rule being to obtain the jar helmet, and lastly, complete the game.
You can watch his journey, which is broken up into five different parts, for yourself over his YouTube channel. As pointed out by Kotaku, Let Me Solo Her's PC crashed more than once because of how demanding the mod was even though he was using an RTX 4080, which is a $1,200 graphics card.

But despite all the hardships he faced, Let Me Solo Her was able to complete the challenge in roughly 10 hours. In a Twitter post, he explained how fun the Malenia run was and how he died more times than he would like to admit.

See Link Using a Rocket in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom rocket

Nintendo released a new video from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom showcasing the rocket, a new item that Link can use to combine with his equipment. In a short clip posted on the official Japanese The Legend of Zelda Twitter account, the company showed Link combining a small rocket with his wooden shield, which allowed him to fly into the sky for the duration of the rocket’s battery.

You can take a better look at the tweet here:

https://twitter.com/ZeldaOfficialJP/status/1651511511289053186

The rocket is a new item in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and the tweet explains that it provides powerful propulsion for a short period of time. In addition, when attached to a shield, the rocket will propel Link up into the sky, allowing him to access enemy bases and other locations from the air in ways that would otherwise be impossible.

On April 13, 2023, Nintendo released the third and last trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom before its release. The trailer finally allowed fans to take a better look at the new design for Ganondorf, which fans have started to affectionately call “rehydrated” Ganondorf.

CMA Says If Microsoft Acquires Activision, Game Pass Gets More Expensive

More details have come to light about the decision to halt Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard from from the recent UK Competition and Market Authority (CMA) report. Along with the extensive examination of Microsoft's current business practices and plans, including its advantage in cloud computing, the CMA also raised concerns about how an increased library of video game content could potentially open the door for Microsoft to make things more costly for consumers.

Detailed in the 400-page report, which gave an extensive and highly detailed overview of Microsoft's current business plans and how it would affect competitors, the CMA committee highlighted its belief that the Xbox Game Pass service would see its value heightened following potential additions from the Activision Blizzard library -- which would give Microsoft an incentive to raise the price.

In the report, the CMA detailed that adding new games into the Microsoft library wasn't the issue, but rather how having Activision's games specifically - such as Call of Duty - would influence the catalog.

Cassette Beasts review - the brilliance of Pokémon all grown up

Have you ever had a song that didn't click for you until you heard a remix? For me it's the Glitch Mob remix of Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes. I like the original well enough, but something about that version just hits right. Feel free to blast my terrible taste in music in the comments! It's not just the slightly hammy music analogy that makes me think about Cassette Beasts as a remix. Its similarities to Pokémon are far too blatant to just slot it into a broad monster battler genre, yet there's still enough that's new and fresh and different to make it more than a mere cover or tribute. And while I like Pokémon, I love Cassette Beasts.

The game starts with you deposited unceremoniously on New Wirral, a mysterious Arthurian isle unshackled from both time and any particular version of our reality. New Wirral's human inhabitants arrived from different times and versions of Earth, with the first reaching its shores a little over a century before the game's present. They swiftly discovered that they were not the only living creatures on the island, with dozens of different monsters roaming its environs. Some time before your arrival, it was discovered that these monsters could be recorded onto regular old cassette tapes which would allow the bearer to transform into them. Pretty good setup for some monster battling, eh?

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor system requirements, PC performance, and best settings to use

I quite enjoy the vwing-vwing lighstabering at the heart of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which is why it now pains me to have an extended moan about the PC version's technical troubles.

Despite the odd glimmer of joy, like better-than-expected performance on its lowest system requirements, much about playing Jedi: Survivor on Windows suggests it could have used a little more time in the bacta tank. Sluggishness and stuttering are problems on higher-end graphics cards, even before adding the strain of ray tracing effects, and FSR upscaling often fails to deliver a significant performance boost.

PlayStation 5 Sales Top 38 Million Following Its Best Year on the Market

Sony's PlayStation 5 has just wrapped its best year on the market so far and has crossed 38 million units sold as a result.

Revealed in Sony's latest financial earnings report, the PlayStation 5 sold 6.3 million units in the fourth quarter (Q4) of financial year 2022-23. This was more than three times stronger than its sales in Q4 the previous year, where it sold just two million units.

Having sold 32.1 million units as of the end of Q3, the PS5 has now reached 38.4 million units sold. Sony also sold nearly as many units in financial year 2022-23 as it had prior to that point, rounding out the year with 19.1 million PS5 consoles sold compared to the 19.3 million sold beforehand.

The 6.3 million fourth quarter wasn't its strongest, however, as 7.1 million PS5 consoles were sold in Q3. This is a fairly regular trend, however, as Q3 includes the holiday period which usually leads to significant sales boosts for video game hardware.

The increase in sales overall is likely connected to the fact that PS5 consoles are now readily available as Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan said in January that the stock shortage is essentially over.

PSA: Your Copy of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Might Need a Big Day One Download

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has a complicated day one update situation that might mean users have to download a hefty patch whether you're on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, or PC.

EA announced on Twitter (below) that it's releasing a day one patch for Survivor that addresses some performance issues, but some PC players are reporting colossal file sizes. Even some players who pre-loaded the game on Steam are reporting a launch day update of up to 128 GB.

EA also released patches throughout the week before launch, meaning that, depending on when users pre-loaded, there might be some updates that were missed. IGN's day one update on PC came in at 46.5 GB, for example, and while this is a lot less than some PC users' experience, it's still a hefty addition for those looking to enjoy the game on launch day.

Those who have pre-loaded the game on PS5 and Xbox Series should have the smoothest experience, as the day one patches here are only a few GB each (though there may also be a mid-week patch to download too that adds a few GB).

My job as an Elden Ring crab delivery driver

Emma's Adventures is a new monthly column for Eurogamer supporters written by Emma Kent - someone with an uncanny knack for finding strange adventures in games.

In the wild, abandoned wastes of the Consecrated Snowfield, a warrior stands on the precipice of a frozen ledge, his broad frame silhouetted against a soulless sky. His ragged cloak lifts in the wind, catching slightly on his armour. The crunch of snow behind him betrays the footsteps of something living, and he turns to face his opponent. Another challenger is approaching. Foolish.

The warrior unsheathes his sword, dull edges twisted and curled from the brutal force of previous collisions. Dark red lines have dried into the hilt. He mutters an incantation under his breath, bracing his body for the bone-shuddering impact of battle. The two figures circle each other, pausing just outside of striking range. For a moment, even the cruel wind stills, lessening her fury to watch the duel below. Then the veteran lets out a cry, raising his terrible blade to land the first blow. But to his horror, his opponent has already moved. An unfamiliar stab of fear runs through the warrior. He looks to the ground.

A busy week with plenty of greats

There's a lovely moment in, of all things, the movie Dreamcatcher, where, if memory serves, the main characters are trekking through the woods and all of these deer and rabbits and forest animals come charging through the trees, spooked by something. It's magical, almost fairy-tale like in all these bounding woodland critters. But it's also terrifying, because why are they running? What horror are they fleeing?

In Dreamcatcher's case I cannot remember - the woodland tumbling is all I have left of that film, which I may have watched on a plane or something. But when I look at this week and see how busy it is, I think of Dreamcatcher's woods. Lots of games out this week, large and small, and at least some of them have been spooked by Nintendo's huge beast crashing, unseen for now, through the distant undergrowth.

Maybe I'm wrong, actually. I look down the list and I don't think Dungeon Drafters had to get out of the way of Zelda. This is a beautiful game, a turn-based tactics game in which cards are magic and your placement on the board is deeply important. Each screen is a new room in the dungeon, a puzzle you have to fight your way through, and when one of the tilesets on offer is a glacial library, you've pretty much sold me already. Dungeon Drafters is on PC at the moment, and well worth grabbing, but it's going to absolutely sing on Switch when it arrives later in the year. Cor.

Microsoft enters yet another 10-year agreement, despite CMA setback

In its ongoing bid to acquire Activision Blizzard - something that saw a major set back earlier this week, after UK regulators dramatically blocked the deal - Microsoft has announced yet another 10-year commitment.

This latest deal is with cloud gaming platform Nware. Sharing the news on Twitter, Microsoft vice chair and president Brad Smith wrote: "Microsoft and European cloud gaming platform Nware have signed a 10-year agreement to stream PC games built by Xbox on its platform, as well as Activision Blizzard titles after the acquisition closes.

"While it's still early for the emerging cloud segment in gaming, this new partnership combined with our other recent commitments will make more popular games available on more cloud game streaming services than they are today."

Review: Labyrinth of Zangetsu Is Beautiful, But Dry

labyrinth of zangetsu

Labyrinth of Zangetsu is a very typical dungeon crawler with a rather atypical art style. The whole game has a sumi-e aesthetic, which meshes well with the overall narrative. Though it does not bring anything really new to the table, it has a solid foundation and a beautiful look that’ll please any dungeon crawler fan.

The story of Labyrinth of Zangetsu takes place in a world where a mysterious Ink has corrupted the people, animals, and land. People who can withstand the Ink form parties to enter labyrinths and fight back against the twisted monsters threatening Ido, which is the final bastion of humankind. Though the story is fairly simple, the dialog and wording are grandiose, like you're reading a high fantasy novel. I thought that was really cool, though it was a tad annoying how the same dialog boxes would pop up every single time you entered a dungeon.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Slammed on Steam Over Performance Issues

EA and Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has been slammed with several negative reviews on Steam as users report performance issues.

Survivor, the galaxy-spanning sequel to 2019's Jedi: Fallen Order, currently has a Mostly Negative rating on Steam with only 31% of 1,216 users recommending it.

"Game is extremely fun but performs terribly," said Steam user Doctor TacoChocolate. "I'm using a 3090 FE and 5700x and getting a consistent 30 fps in some areas. Other areas give me a mostly consistent 45. This is at 1440p."

Users have also taken to Reddit to voice their complaints, with Delicious_Pea_3706 saying "the concerning comments on performance for PC are true". Running Survivor on an RTX 4090 and AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D saw it crash not only itself but the entire PC, they said.

"Running a 4090 with Epic Settings and Ray Tracing was getting me around 90 FPS, which is pretty good, but the frame stutters were way too frequent. I don’t want to imagine how bad it must be for mid range hardware."

Other users reported crashes too, alongside graphical issues, and an "unexpected error" that saw the player bypass story elements without seeing them, forcing them to either continue in a broken game state or load a previous save and hope it worked the second time.

Honkai Star Rail downloads

The game only just come out, but Honkai: Star Rail has already surpassed 20 million downloads. For reference, the game officially released on April 26, 2023. Honkai: Star Rail is the newest turn-based mobile and PC game from HoYoVerse, who is the creator of Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3rd. [Thanks, Daniel "ZhugeEX" Ahmad!]

In a Weibo post, HoYoVerse thanked all of the Trailblazers for their support of the game. It will hand out ten Star Rail Special Passes on April 30, 2023 as a show of gratitude. That will also be the date of a celebration event for the launch of the game.

Though Genshin Impact has been HoYoVerse's global juggernaut, Honkai: Star Rail is hot on its heels. According to the same post, Honkai: Star Rail is currently the most-downloaded and best-selling iOS game on the charts. It also had 30 million pre-registrations, which is more than how many Genshin Impact had. However, it is possible that many of these players did not know of HoYoVerse prior to Genshin Impact, which may have affected those numbers for Star Rail.

Monolith Soft Talks About Animating Cutscenes and Scripted Events

Monolith Soft event animators interview

Monolith Soft released a new interview with two of their event animators talking about the difference between cutscenes and scripted events, continuity between scenes and gameplay in video games, and the ins and outs of their job. Miura is one of the animators in charge of cutscenes, while Katsuta works with scripted events.

While it varies from project to project, Monolith Soft distinguished two types of events in most of the company's games. The first one of this are cutscenes. These use elaborate camera angles, particular character direction, and motion capture. The second one is scripted events. They are made by using premade stock character animations and movements, and combining them with specialized tools.

Both Monolith Soft creatives also talked about maintaining continuity between cutscenes and gameplay. Katsuta said that if a technique or move is not usable at a certain part of the game, they need to work around that. Or if the clothes get dirty during a cutscene, they also need to communicate that properly so that when players regain control these elements remain consistent.

Katsuta added that they also have to work around the possibility of the player only ever watching a cutscene or event once, so they need to make sure to craft it so that it is as clear as possible. In cases where a cutscene is immediately followed by a scripted event, sometimes they will use a particular animation from the previous cutscene for the beginning of the event, so that the transition from cutscene to scripted event looks natural.

Steam Client Beta update adds new features, including notes and ability to watch films while you play

Valve has released a new update for its Steam Client Beta.

This update adds a swathe of pretty nifty features and improvements, including the ability to pin windows from the overlay, so they appear on top of the game while in-game. This means that, in Valve's words, "yes, you can watch movies while you play games if you really want to" (although, I think it really meant this feature to be more for things like guides and notes).

As for those notes, this update adds a Notes app. The app does pretty much everything you would expect it to. It lets you take down notes about your game, and comes with "rich text formatting, the ability to have multiple notes per game, and can even be used in offline mode". Your notes will be saved per game, and are then synced to other PCs that you are logged into.

Tell us your favourite Star Wars gaming memory, and win Jedi: Survivor on PS5

UPDATE 3RD MAY: After much deliberation, a winner has been decided upon, and it's Rogueywon! You could say Rogueywon the prize.

Their experience of the old TIE Fighter game was something I'd never heard before, or considered, and it reinforces the unique power games have to put us inside perspectives we haven't considered before, and open our eyes to them. So thank you again for the thought-provoking memory.

Are you one of the 20 million people downloading Honkai: Star Rail right now?

With 30 million-odd pre-registrations under its belt prior to coming out, Honkai: Star Rail was always going to be a pretty big deal when it eventually launched. The turn-based anime RPG did exactly that earlier this week, and it's already been downloaded over 20 million times in just a single day, according to a tweet from analyst Daniel Ahmad. Perhaps not surprising for a free-to-play game, but still. That's a lot of people. I must admit, I could never quite gel with Genshin Impact, another very anime RPG made by the same developers, but Honkai's turn-based battles look a lot more up my street. So I downloaded yesterday, which I guess makes me part of that enormous 20 million number. Are you planning on giving it a go as well?

Scout Report: Shardpunk: Verminfall is an impressive tightrope act

Hargh blargh games are bad, roguelikes are worse, whinge moan complain. It is that time once again. You know whether my complaints will bother you, so consider this a massive recommendation if they dont: Shardtide Verminp... Punktide Verminsha... Shardpunk... goddamn it. Hang on.

Shardpunk Verminfall is, as Graham reported, an excellent mash-up of several familiar games and concepts, yet doesn't feel like a knockoff of any, or lack its own identity. I would resent it a lot less if it wasn't also a roguelike. Even with its standard mono-save system and unlocking things and "repeating the whole thing from scratch ad infinitum" though, I can't pretend I don't enjoy it anyway.

Steam is getting its own notes app, so RIP my gaming notebook, I guess

Valve revealed a swathe of new features coming to Steam's desktop client beta last night, and there are lots of new features that caught my eye. They're overhauling things like the in-game overlay, creating a new toolbar to house achievements, friends chat and discussions, and creating a new hub that shows you everything that's happened in the game's community since you last played it. It also introduces a cool pin feature that lets you stick overlay windows on top of your game - handy if you're following a guide, say, and don't want to keep alt-tabbing out. But there's one thing I'm quite upset about, and that's the new Notes app. I love a good notebook game, you know? Fiddling out puzzles in Tunic, remembering patterns in The Witness... Notebook games are great. But I fear this new Notes app will kill that kind of note-taking dead. And that makes me sad.

I Wish Nintendo Would Bring Back StreetPass

I visited PAX East in Boston last month and on my checklist of "things to bring along this year" was my New Nintendo 3DS XL. I honestly don't remember the last time it was part of my kit while traveling, but I do remember bringing it with me to a post-Nintendo Switch PAX East and being disappointed by how few StreetPass notifications I picked up. This year I brought it along more as a science experiment than for the fun of it, wanting to see if I could pick up a few new guests for my Plaza during the course of my day.

I've been going to PAX East in Boston every year since 2013. Maybe earlier? It's been a long time. Early on I would scrape together whatever spare cash I had, crash on hotel floors, eat nothing but $9 Con-sausages twice a day, and lose myself in the splendor and spectacle. It's changed so much since I've been going, for the better, and some of my fondest memories during my time on the outside (and now inside) of the gaming industry are tied to PAX East. It's just such a good time! If you haven't gone to one, make it a priority. Trust me!

Goodbye Volcano High Mixes Senior Year Struggles with the Threat of Dino Armageddon

One of the many reasons indie games are so special to me is that we often get something unique that we usually don’t see from a focus-tested AAA game that’s got to recoup its big budget by selling as many copies as humanly possible. Goodbye Volcano High is one of my most anticipated indie titles for 2023 thanks to its charming art style and creative premise. After being pitched on what the gameplay experience would be like and playing the first 30 minutes, I got a small taste of what this choose-your-own adventure will provide – including several different gameplay elements surrounding personal choices and rhythmic music sequences. I still have many questions on exactly how much depth we’ll see in the player’s options as well as the consequences that will be given depending on the choices throughout this story, but the setup was interesting enough for me to want to see things through.

Goodbye Volcano High stars a cast of dino-humanoid teenagers starting out their last year of high school, figuring out their futures, and dealing with a meteor that will presumably destroy them all. It might be silly to mention, but what speaks to me about this idea is that I was a senior in high school myself in 2012, back when some people thought that the world was going to end. Even though I never believed it myself, there was always this looming aura around not just my senior year, but all of high school that the end of the world may be upon us.

Sony Looks to Break Records by Selling More PlayStation Consoles Than Ever Before This Year

Sony has high hopes for the PS5 in the current financial year as it aims to break PlayStation records by selling 25 million units.

The company briefly mentioned its goals for next year during its latest earnings report, where it revealed the PS5 had now sold more than 38 million units thanks to its best year on the market so far.

The 19.1 million units it sold in financial year 2022-23 weren't enough though. "We aim to continuously accelerate penetration of PS5 and aim for PS5 sell-in units for the current fiscal year to be 25 million units, the highest ever for any [PlayStation] console in history," Sony said.

It would certainly be an impressive figure because, as mentioned, no PlayStation console in history has sold so many units in a single financial year, not even the PS2, which is the best selling console of all time with 159 million units sold.

The PS5 is certainly trending towards an incredibly strong year as its sales figures grew significantly as component shortages that plagued the video game industry waned. Sony recorded 7.1 million and 6.3 million sales in quarters three and four last year, compared to the 2.4 and 3.3 recorded in the two before that.

Cygames Establishes Offices in America and Europe

Cygames Europe North America

Cygames announced that it has set up international branches in North America and Europe. Cygames America is in the US, whereas Cygames Europe is in England. The purpose of Cygames America and Europe appear to be for marketing and promotional purposes rather than game development.

The international popularity of Cygames started in 2016 with the release of Shadowverse. Other overseas include ones in South Korea and in Taiwan. About half of the global gaming market exists in North America and Europe, which is why the company will branch out there in order to further promote its games.

Cygames America is specifically in Los Angeles and it has $700,000 in capital stock. Its main duties include marketing and licensing. Cygames Europe is in London, and it has a capital stock of about 500,000 GBP. Like its sister office in California, it will handle marketing and licensing, as well as other related tasks. With a stronger foothold in the western market, this could lead to the localization and eventual release of some Japan-exclusive games, such as the financial juggernaut Uma Musume: Pretty Derby.

Now that Cygames set up offices in America and Europe, time will tell how the company will expand in these two territories with its current and future games.
