Twisted Metal live-action TV series gets a July air date in the US

A little over two years after first details emerged, the Twisted Metal live-action TV series has a US air date, with its premiere now set for 27th July.

This 10 half-hour-long episode adaptation of the primarily PlayStation-exclusive vehicular combat series - which, slightly alarmingly, is now approaching its 30th anniversary - tells the story of a motor-mouthed outsider (played by Anthony Mackie) who's offered a chance at a better life, as long as he can deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Sony first touted turning Twisted Metal into a television show back in 2019, but it wasn't until 2021 that the wheels officially got in motion. Since then, US subscription service Peacock has placed an order for the action comedy, while Cobra Kai's Michael Jonathan Smith has signed up as showrunner and to pen the scripts - which are based on a concept by Zombieland and Deadpool writing duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Excellent detective game The Case Of The Golden Idol is getting three prequel DLC cases next week

The Case Of The Golden Idol was one of my favourite games of 2022, but one twist I didn't see coming from the heir to Obra Dinn's detective crown was more of it, or more of it so soon, for that matter. Happily, developers Color Gray Games have announced a new DLC pack is coming for The Golden Idol next week called The Spider Of Lanka. Set in 1741, a year before the first scenario of The Golden Idol proper, this trio of new cases looks set to shed extra light on the titular idol whose mysterious powers set the original game in motion. I'm afraid I can't tell you much more than that, as most of the announcement details have been slapped with big black REDACTED marks. Have a watch of the reveal trailer below instead.

The Electronic Wireless Show podcast S2 Episode 13: it's time time

Between the spooky reality tears of Oxenfree II: Lost Signals and the chrono-bending clue hunts of Crime O’Clock, we at the Electronic Wireless Show podcast have had time travel on the brain. Clever game mechanic, or narrative copout? Maybe both? Maybe neither? Or maybe it’s just a reason for Nate and I to gush about Titanfall 2’s singleplayer campaign while Alice considers the temporal implications of save scumming. To know the answer, you yourself must travel back to the past, specifically Tuesday, when we recorded it.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Has an Arachnophobia Toggle That Lets You Remove Spiders Altogether

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will ship with an arachnophobia mode that completely removes spider-like enemies from the game.

Many arachnophobic gamers lamented the presence of giant spider-like enemies known as Wyyyschokk in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which haunted the lush forested Wookie homeworld of Kashyyyk and enjoyed ambushing protagonist Cal Kestis at the least convenient moment.

Unfortunately for some, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is also set to feature at least one enemy of an arachnid disposition. However, this time around Respawn Entertainment has taken mercy on us by including a handy option that will allow players to eradicate the arachnid threat from the game altogether with the press of a menu toggle.

As highlighted by the Twitter account Daily Jedi Survivor, and independently verified by IGN, Respawn Entertainment has included an arachnophobia option, which will allow you to remove spider-like enemies from the game entirely.

The Last of Us Part 1 on PC Gets Huge 25GB Patch But Naughty Dog Still Isn't Done

Naughty Dog has released a 25GB patch for The Last of Us Part 1 on PC — its seventh update since the port was released just one month ago.

The Last of Us Part I v1.0.4.0 targets framerate issues by further optimizing GPU and CPU performance and adding a new option to adjust the texture streaming rate, according to the patch notes.

Also among the 22 bug fixes and improvements are texture and resolution enhancements for those playing on low or medium settings, as well as fixes for several instances that may lead to crashing.

Naughty Dog says it and PC port developer Iron Galaxy are "actively optimizing, working on game stability, and implementing additional fixes which will all be included in regularly released future updates." Specifically, the companies say those updates will improve framerate, texture fidelity, and CPU optimization.

The Last of Us Part 1 for PC was released with numerous technical issues that led to poor performance and excessive crashing. Two days after it was released, it held a "mostly negative" rating on Steam with over 9,000 reviews. Now, one month and seven patches later, its Steam rating has been elevated to "mixed" with nearly 18,000 user reviews.

Here's Naughty Dog's full list of patch notes for The Last of Us v1.0.4.0:

Respawn CEO Would Love to Make Another Titanfall, But There Are No Plans Just Now

Respawn Entertainment's CEO Vince Zampella has said he would love to make another Titanfall game but it's not on the cards yet.

Speaking to Barron's, Zampella spoke about the possibility of developing Titanfall 3 but he said there aren't any plans for the studio to do so at the moment.

He said he doesn't get fans' hopes up because if he says yes, they'll get disappointed when it doesn't come. However, if Titanfall 3 does come to be, it would have to be the right project and at the right time.

"It has to be the right thing," Zampella said. "It's such a beloved franchise for the fans and also for us. If it is not the right moment in time, the right idea, then it just doesn't make sense."

This reiteration comes nearly three months after EA cancelled a secret single-player Titanfall game codenamed Titanfall Legends, which is set in the same universe as Titanfall and Apex Legends. This cancellation came after the mobile versions of Apex Legends and Battlefield were shut down.

In September 2021, Titanfall's community coordinator Jason Garza said it was unlikely that Respawn would develop Titanfall 3, as it was focusing on improving Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends, the latter of which had quickly grown in popularity ever since it shadow-dropped two years prior. The former game fell short of its projected sales, but still managed to gain a cult following.

How Forza Motorsport’s Next Entry Is Introducing Innovative Visual Accessibility

Xbox’s accessible innovations and developments have benefited disabled players for years. The 2018 release of the Xbox Adaptive Controller, feature tags on store pages, award-winning accessibility in titles like Forza Horizon 5, and even an annual showcase highlighting the varying ways in which Xbox and its studios are incorporating accessibility into their projects have put the disabled community at the forefront of Xbox conversations.

The newest entry in the Forza Motorsport series (simply called Forza Motorsport) has already been revealed to include numerous accessibility options commonly found in most modern games like control remapping, subtitles, and varying colorblind modes and filters. And now, blind/low vision players can experience a brand-new feature set – called Blind Driving Assists – a series of audio cues that provide track and vehicle information allowing blind/low vision players to complete races.

Speaking with IGN, Turn 10 Studios developers, an accessibility consultant, and Xbox head Phil Spencer discuss the development process behind Blind Driving Assists, the importance of community involvement, and Xbox’s desire to create an inclusive and accessible industry.

How to Find Kids in the Honkai: Star Rail Hook Hide-and-Seek Quest

Once you get to Jarilo-VI’s Underworld area in Honkai: Star Rail, you’ll automatically get pulled into a campaign quest with Hook called “Hide-and-Seek.” Basically, to advance the story, you’ll need to get the trust of the Moles and play the game with them to reach the Fight Club. It isn’t the most challenging hunt, but here’s where I found everyone to help you speed through this segment.

First, here’s where Hook is when you’re searching for her during the “practice” session for the “Hide-and-Seek” Honkai: Star Rail quest.
[gallery columns="1" size="full" ids="961034" link="file"]

Once you find Hook, then the real Honkai: Star Rail hide-and-seek portion of the quest will begin. The characters are in this limited area. Both Hook and one of the Moles sidekicks are at the far ends of the map. However, the sidekick Julian is hiding in plain sight in the middle of the map, disguised as an adult man, and March 7th will point out in a scripted scene that you should talk to him.
[gallery size="full" ids="961035,961036,961037" link="file"]

After finding all three kids, Hook will lead you to the Fight Club. This is a short walk down the street. Once it’s done, you get 300 Trailblaze EXP, 3 Adventure Logs, and 4,000 Credits.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PC and mobile devices. PS4 and PS5 versions are on the way.

Masahiro Sakurai Shares Early Kirby Game Development Secrets

Masahiro Sakurai Kirby Development

Masahiro Sakurai shared development secrets from the first Kirby game. In the latest video on his YouTube channel Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games, he shared some facts about the development of Kirby’s Dream Land. Many details shared in the video were originally seen in a presentation given at the Kirby 25th Anniversary concerts in 2017. Sakurai shared them with a wider audience to celebrate the 100th video on his channel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUY2AtBD6Sk

At one point in the video, Sakurai shows off the original dev kit that was used to make the games Kirby’s Dream Land and Kirby’s Adventure. It was a special Famicom called the Twin Famicom, and all development took place with this device. Sakurai shows off the sprites and menus used in development. He also treats us to a bonus cat appearance.

Throughout the video he shows off how enemy designs were made specifically to save space. He reveals that all enemy movement was manually programmed by Sakurai himself. He also shows off the original design document for Kirby’s Dream Land, featuring an early concept for the Super Smash Bros damage system.

Sakurai previously looked back at Kirby’s Dream Land in another video on his channel as part of his Game Concepts series. He also shared stories about other Kirby games.

Appreciating the Resident Evil Spin-Off Games

Resident Evil Spin-Offs

Resident Evil is an expansive series, with upwards of two decades worth of titles having releases since its inception in the late 1990s. While there are more than a handful of mainline games, 10 counting Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, the series has seen it's fair share of spin-off titles. This has included competitive first person shooters, multiplayer focused survival titles, and rail shooters. While there are many, these are among the best Resident Evil spin-off games worth checking out in some capacity.

Resident Evil Outbreak

Arguably ahead of its time, Resident Evil Outbreak is a online multiplayer Resident Evil game where players can pick one of several characters to escape Raccoon City. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses, which groups will need to plan around when completing objectives. Additionally, Outbreak features unique locales for players to explore, and while zombies remain the bread and butter enemy, Outbreak has its own plethora of frightening foes to encounter. It also featured an infection mechanic, which when bitten by zombies would increase your infection rate until you'd eventually turn. It'd only make sense for Capcom to give Resident Evil Outbreak a third chance, since multiplayer games are hugely popular. Either way, it'd just be great to have Outbreak on something that isn't the PlayStation 2 at this point.

Gotham Knights' latest patch adds a tough new 15-floor Heroic Assault raid

Warner Bros' co-op action-adventure Gotham Knights has just received another update, this one bringing fixes, accessibility improvements, and a surprise new 15-floor Heroic Assault raid.

Gotham Knights, of course, recieved a lukewarm reception when it launched last October, with particularly stern words being saved for its myriad technical issues. Since then, developer Warner Bros Montreal has been tinkering under the hood to improve the experience - with notable success, as Digital Foundry noted recently - making today's update the latest in a long line of patches.

With most of the game's glaring technical issues seemingly now resolved, its latest update - which notably features accessibility improvements such as controller remapping, improved screen-reader support, and button press toggles, as detailed in the accompanying patch notes - is less about fixes and more about new content.

PlayStation VR2 Will Soon Be Available at Local Retailers, Sony Says

Sony has revealed that the PlayStation VR2 will soon be heading to a retailer near you. The company made the announcement on Twitter today, but it hasn't given an exact date as to when major brick-and-mortar stores will have the headsets in stock.

Currently, you can still order the PS VR2 from PlayStation Direct, where it was exclusively sold in the two months since it was released. If you're desperate to know when you'll see it in stores, ShopTo says that it will show up in UK stores on May 12. Whether the headset will be stocked up in retailers on the same day in the US is unknown, but you may want to check the stores in your area for availability.

The PS VR2 on its own costs $549.99, but when you get the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle it's $599.99. Either way, it's pricier than the PS5, which is $50 cheaper if you buy the original disc player version. With wider availability in physical and online retailers, however, the headset may see some discounts at some point in the future.

CMA Says Nintendo Platforms Aren't 'Technically Capable' of Running Call of Duty, Disputing Microsoft's Claim

As the UK Competition and Markets Authority blocked Microsoft and Activision Blizzard’s merger yesterday, it also asserted that Nintendo’s consoles aren’t technically capable of running Call of Duty.

“Nintendo does not currently offer CoD, and we have seen no evidence to suggest that its consoles would be technically capable of running a version of CoD that is similar to those in Xbox and PlayStation in terms of quality of gameplay and content,” the CMA explains in a final report.

The entity believes that Xbox and PlayStation consoles compete more closely with each other in terms of content, target audience, and technology. On the other hand, Nintendo competes less closely with both Xbox and PlayStation because its consoles have different technical specifications and more child-friendly titles.

Next Fire Emblem Heroes Banner Adds Playable Nerbuz

Nerbuz is one of the major characters in Fire Emblem Heroes’ Book VII, and she’ll now be a playable character. Nintendo announced she is the latest unit to join in the new Mythic heroes banner. Starting on April 28, 2023, people can pull for the character.

Nerbuz is classified as a blue “beast” character and cavalry unit in the game. This means if she’s only near beasts and dragons, she’ll transform and have different stats. Her kit includes her Horn of the Land weapon and new skills like Fruit of Life and Alarm Atk/Spd.

Here are the other focus units on the banner:

  • Arval: Cycle Keeper
  • Ash: Retainer to Askr
  • Byleth: The Fodlan Star
  • Claude: King of Unification
  • Deirdre: Fated Saint
  • Ganglot: Death Anew
  • Mirabilis: Daydream
  • Plumeria: Lewd Dream
  • Shez: Sharpest Blades
  • Tiki: Awakened Blood
  • Triandra: Nightmare

Here’s the full Mythic Hero Nerbuz: God of the Land Fire Emblem Heroes banner video. As usual, it notes that there is an opportunity to “spark” on this banner and be guaranteed one of the focus units if you pull 40 times. However, this is limited to Feh Pass subscribers.

How to Unlock and Get Relics in Honkai: Star Rail

How to Get Relics in Honkai: Star Rail

You don’t need to change characters’ weapons or armor in Honkai: Star Rail. Rather, additional buffs and bonuses come from equipping Light Cones and Relics. The former are acquired through pulling on gacha banners. However, if you’re looking for how to get Relics in Honkai: Star Rail, you’ll actually need to play the game to find or earn them.

How to unlock Relics in Honkai: Star Rail

It takes a bit before you can even start getting Relics in the game! You need to get to the Trailblaze Mission “In the Withering Wintry Night” and finish its “Ones Fallen into the Abyss” task on Jarilo-VI. This involves being at Trailblaze Level 14 and helping Seele save the miners.

How to get Relics in Honkai: Star Rail

Well, an almost effortless way to get Relics is to take part in missions and storyline stuff. This is because as you explore places like Jarilo-VI, you might get one of these pieces of equipment from Bountiful Chests found in the world or  Trailblaze Missions. There will also be World Shops in each location, which would let you use Hertaerums at Herta Space Station, Shields at Jarilo-IV, or Strale at Xianzhou Lofou to buy them. However, you will need to hit certain Trailblaze Levels to be able to buy them. So the Musketeer of Wild Wheat set will be at Herta Space Station's shop, but you need to be at Trailblaze Level 20 to buy it, for example.

Redfall accessibility options and PC requirements detailed

Arkane's co-op vampire shooter Redfall is just a week away now, and as the clock ticks down to release, Microsoft has shared a bunch of new info, including a new trailer, details on its accessibility options, and its PC system requirements - the latter being particularly intriguing in light of the recently announced 30fps limit on consoles.

Starting with Redfall's accessibility options, these have now been shared as part of a full "settings" breakdown over on Arkane's blog. Accessbility options, specifically, include the likes of text-to-speech and speech-to-text support, screen narration, subtitles and closed captioning, font scaling, a colour blindness filter, notification duration settings, and an optional "accessibility reticule" for anyone that would benefit from a permanent fixation point on-screen.

Arkane has also provided an extensive list of more general settings, highlighting things like toggleable head bob and camera shake, optional object highlights, and four difficulty settings - three of which are available when first starting the game. It's well worth checking out the full article for the considerably more expanded breakdown.

Microsoft, Activision-Blizzard, and the CMA: So, What’s Next?

In a surprise decision yesterday, the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority made the decision to block Microsoft’s planned $69 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, citing concerns over Microsoft’s ability to dominate the emerging cloud gaming market with exclusives like Call of Duty.

While the deal has seen challenges in numerous other regions including the US and the EU, many expected the CMA to approve it, especially after its March statement that Call of Duty console exclusivity was no longer a concern. Thus with further legal challenges looming globally and Microsoft set to appeal the CMA’s decision, many are now wondering what’s next for Microsoft and Activision-Blizzard both in the UK and abroad.

The answer is of course complicated, dependent on multiple regulatory bodies, time consuming, and above all, expensive. We spoke to lawyers and analysts to help unpack the rocky road Microsoft has ahead of it if it wants to pursue Activision-Blizzard, what possible outcomes remain, and why we’re likely going to be hearing about this deal for months and potentially years to come.

What Happened and Why?

After a lengthy review, the CMA has moved to prevent Microsoft from acquiring Activision-Blizzard, but not for the reason many expected. While much of the public debate has centered around the possibility of Call of Duty console exclusivity to Xbox, the CMA determined back in February that this was not actually a serious concern. In the end, what convinced the CMA to fire back was not Call of Duty, but cloud gaming.

Masahiro Sakurai Shows Off Original Kirby Design Docs and Other Secrets in New Video

Kirby and Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai presented the original design documents for Kirby and other secrets of Kirby's Dream Land for the Game Boy in his 100th episode of "Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games" on YouTube.

The documents aren't new per se, as Sakurai said he presented them at Kirby's 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert in Japan in 2017. However, he decided to give the same secret dev presentation in a way that is new to Kirby fans outside of Japan.

In the video, Sakurai said he came up with the concept for Kirby's Dream Land around May 1990 at the age of 19 — he's 52 now — making the game simple enough to invite people who are new to video games and showing them how fun they can be. It was so simple that it was 20 minutes short. All Kirby did in the original game was hover, swallow and spit out enemies because he didn't possess any Copy Abilities until Kirby's Adventure.

Kirby's Dream Land was developed in under a year using the trackball HAL Laboratory made and hooked up to the Twin Famicom. Sakurai demonstrated how multipurpose the Twin Famicom was, as it allowed him and his fellow developers to draw the pixel art, combine the art to create the characters, conducted animation tests for them, and even create the backgrounds and title screen.
