Ubisoft Paris developers speak of "morally and physically exhausting" crunch culture in new report

1 year 1 month ago

Developers have spoken about the "morally and physically exhausting" crunch culture at Ubisoft Paris.

In a report by NME focused primarily on the development of Just Dance 2023, members of the Solidaires Informatique union group for Ubisoft Paris said pre-production for the game was a "mess".

Reportedly, the Just Dance 2023 team was "tasked with changing the Just Dance 2023 engine just 11 months before launch", while bosses continued to push ideas "that had to be considered at all costs". This was despite developers saying they were "already underwater" at this point.

Goblin Slayer Another Adventurer: Nightmare Feast Will Be a Tactical RPG

1 year 1 month ago

Bushiroad revealed some more information on the genre and main characters of Goblin Slayer Another Adventurer: Nightmare Feast. This will be the game adaptation of the light novel and anime series Goblin Slayer. The original writer and character designer for the series will work on the game. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

In terms of the genre, Goblin Slayer Another Adventurer: Nightmare Feast will be a TRPG (tactical RPG) in a similar vein to Fire Emblem. You will have to take care of where your units and enemy units are when coming up with your strategies. As well, the game will have its own original story.

Aside from game-original characters, five characters (Goblin Slayer, Priestess, High Elf Archer, Lizard Priest, and Dwarf Shaman) will make their appearances in Goblin Slayer Another Adventurer: Nightmare Priest. Their voice actors from the show will reprise their roles. Here are the original characters and cast that will be in the game:

Persona 5: The Phantom X Introduces Persona II Users

1 year 1 month ago

persona 5 phantom x header tas

Perfect World Games showed off some of the party members who will be in Persona 5: The Phantom X. Previously, it revealed three of the main characters, as well as your Velvet Room assistant, Merope. The new party members are people who have some sort of notable public-facing identity and use the power of Persona II to fight against Shadows. [Thanks, Persona Central!]

The new characters are:

  • Mont Kotone (Terpsichore)
  • Seiji Shirajima (Leucothea)
  • Yuki Fujikawa (Styx)

[gallery columns="6" ids="957302,957301,957300,957299,957298,957297" link="file"]

Like Persona 3, these characters’ Personae draw inspiration from Greek mythology. This is in contrast to the three that Perfect World had previously appeared. For reference, the other ones are Jánošík (a Slovakian Robin Hood figure), Rob Roy (Scottish outlaw and folk hero), and Awilda (female pirate). It is unclear what “Persona II” is and how it’s different from normal Personae.

The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Gameplay Trailer Shows Off Four Of Link's New Abilities

1 year 1 month ago

Development on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is now complete.

The Legend of Zelda series producer, Eiji Aonuma, revealed this during today's Tears of the Kingdom gameplay showcase. He then jumped directly into the game, showing off more than 10 minutes of new gameplay. Aonuma begins this demonstration by showing how Link can get up to the Sky Islands floating above Hyrule. He uses the "Recall" power, which rewinds an object's movement, to reverse a fallen rock's descent. He's able to reach one of the floating sky islands using this new power.

After fighting an enemy up here, we learn that weapon durability, a hotly debated feature of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is back. But now, you can use Link's new "Fuse" ability to create brand-new weapons. Aonuma showed us how to fuse a branch with a boulder to create a giant hammer, promising that you can do all sorts of things with this new ability. You can even fuse two weapons together, and fuse ingredients to arrows to create variations such as homing arrows and more.

Tax Heaven 3000 launches a week early and its Collector's Edition has already sold out

1 year 1 month ago

Tax Heaven 3000 changed its release date a couple of times, moving from a March 31st date that was suspiciously close to April Fools' Day, to April 4th after its removal from Steam, to yesterday, March 27th. For the uninitiated, Tax Heaven 3000 is the anime dating sim that claims to do your taxes and asks you for identifying info such as your email and Social Security Number. It’s likely a joke app, partly because of its waifu Iris (like, the IRS) and partly because it’s from MSCHF, the art collective behind Lil Nas X’s Satan Shoes and other viral drops.

The Lamplighters League pilfers from the finest strategy games around, and it's utterly thrilling

1 year 1 month ago

As is so often the case in systemic turn-based tactics games, things started to go wrong in my preview session for The Lamplighters League when a nearby torch met a cunningly placed oil slick and erupted into flames. A load of enemies were instantly enveloped in its hot sea of death, as intended, but one of our heroes - the tank-like bruiser Fedir - also ended up getting burned by mistake. As an ex-mob enforcer, he's certainly built to take a few punches, and his abilities are all focused on making him the centre of attention, his attacks growing more powerful as his rage levels continue to grow. "You want him to get attacked," game director Chris Rogers tells me, calling on the phrase 'you wouldn't like him when he's angry' as the basis for Fedir's ability set. But with that extra fire damage he receives, it's just a little too much all at once. He gets knocked down, and the tide of battle quickly goes south.

In truth, I played no part in this downfall. Rogers was in the control cockpit for this one, showing me exactly how Harebrained Schemes' latest game actually works. It's quite a different proposition from their last game, Battletech, and in this quite literal trial by fire, studio head and co-founder Mitch Gitelman actually pulled a dollar out of his pocket at one point and put a bet on whether Rogers would make it out alive. He certainly had his work cut out for him. Rogers won that dollar, and here's how the game's emphasis on deep, customisable character builds set him up for success.

Far Cry 5's 60fps upgrade impresses on all current-gen consoles

1 year 1 month ago

Far Cry 5 was a beautiful game when it launched back in 2018. The game portrayed a sprawling open-world set in the American countryside, with impressive foliage rendering, vast draw distances, and detailed texture work. It was a big step up from prior games, packing excellent support for the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. Five years on, Ubisoft has released an update that unlocks the full potential of the old code on current-gen consoles by unlocking the frame-rate and allowing the game to reach 60 frames per second - so is this a smooth experience? Or are gamers in for a bumpy ride?

As with all backwards-compatible patching efforts, it's important to set expectations right off the bat. Far Cry 5 on current-gen machines isn't a full port of the game to current-gen consoles - it's just a patch, with limited impact on the game experience beyond the performance enhancement. This isn't a bad thing necessarily, but this is more in line with prior Ubisoft game updates - like the Assassin's Creed Origins 60fps patch - than it would be with a rebuilt current-gen version.

But that's not really a bad thing, because Far Cry 5 is still a visually impressive title. Dense foliage blankets the game's forested areas, with detailed greenery and excellent shading. Materials and texture work are both top-notch, and hold up perfectly well even at close range. Lighting in general remains attractive, especially outdoors, and interiors even hold up passably well, packing evocative, if slightly crude, GI coverage. Despite its five year old vintage - a detail Ubisoft is eager to emphasize - Far Cry 5 continues to stand strong from a graphical perspective. It's not all perfect of course, and there are some inconsistencies that do betray its last-generation heritage, but it's hardly an unattractive game.

Genshin Impact Wireless Controller Update Mentions DualSense Edge, Key Binding

Genshin Impact Wireless Controller Update Mentions DualSense Edge, Key Binding

HoYoVerse offered an update on the Genshin Impact wireless controller support for people playing on PCs and iOS devices. It essentially went over the controllers that do and don’t work with the game on those platforms. It also went over how to handle Genshin Impact key binding again. More importantly, the update ended with the company noting it is working on DualSense Edge support for PCs. (As people might imagine, the PS5 version already works with that controller.)

There’s no release window for when people might get to use a DualSense Edge when playing the game on a PC. The announcement noted compatibility “is not complete.” It did note that it eventually will be ready for general use.

HoYoVerse also offered an updated list of wireless controllers that will work with the PC and iOS versions of Genshin Impact. If someone is using an iPhone or iPad, they could use a PS4 DualShock 4, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, or Xbox Wireless Controller. All three of those controllers will work on a PC as well. In addition, the PC version of the game is compatible with a standard PS5 DualSense. Once you’re using one, you can change the key bindings to alter controls by going to the Keys section in Settings.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and DualSense Edge support is in the works for the PC version.

See the New Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Gameplay

Nintendo kicked off the week of March 27, 2023 by promising The Legend of Zelda Series Producer Eiji Aonuma would usher in new Tears of the Kingdom gameplay footage. Now that presentation is available online. While short, at about 10 minutes total, it does offer a better idea of what Link and Zelda will be dealing with in Hyrule after Breath of the Wild. It also confirmed that development is complete on the game.

Here's the video showing off the new The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom gameplay. The game is at a playable state at this point, and Aonuma played it in the presentation. It showed the Sky Islands, as well as how the "Recall" ability can rewind actions. When rocks fall from above, Link can use this skill and his Paraglider to reach one of these floating islands in the game. It also shows Link's Ultrahand ability, for crafting things like rafts, and Ascend to reach higher areas. However, only Link appeared in this latest peek at the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will come to the Nintendo Switch on May 12, 2023. As a reminder, it will be a $69.99, while normal first-party Switch games tend to be $59.99.

Black Dahlia Will Appear in Skullgirls 2nd Encore in March 2023

1 year 1 month ago

black dahlia skullgirls

Autumn Games announced that the final official release date for the Black Dahlia DLC character in Skullgirls 2nd Encore will be very soon. She’ll come out on March 29, 2023 for the PC and PS4 versions of the game. As for those on the Nintendo Switch, they’ll be able to download her on March 31, 2023.

Development on Black Dahlia started in 2022, with early builds of her character appearing at events and as DLC. Her alpha trailer showed that she can use bullets as part of her combos, though they do not seem to have much range or zoning capabilities. Black Dahlia can also run out of these bullets, which require her to reload.

You can watch the alpha trailer for Black Dahlia here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wkp82DqgbSo&t

Black Dahlia draws inspiration from the real-life unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short, or “Black Dahlia” as she was posthumously called. Autumn Games has also seemed to use Hol Horse (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) and BB Hood (Darkstalkers) as some of their inspirations for her gameplay. In terms of the lore, Black Dahlia is a member of the Medici Mafia. She previously showed up in Peacock and Squigly’s stories.

A new character trailer for Tekken 8 showcases the action of the returning Jun Kazama. Jin’s long-lost mother is making her first playable appearance in a mainline entry since Tekken 2, and based on a new gameplay trailer, she hasn’t lost a step.

A gameplay trailer shows off Jun’s expert use of Kazama-style martial arts to cleanse opponents of their evils. That translates to beating the snot out of them if that wasn’t obvious. We also see a brief reunion between Jun and her former lover, Kazuya, and it goes about as well as you would expect from a mother meeting the father and repeat attempted killer of their son.

For those keeping count, here’s the list of confirmed fighters thus far:

Tekken 8 still doesn’t have a release date, but it’s coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Gameplay Reveals Link's New Abilities, Weapon Durability, and More

1 year 1 month ago

Nintendo has finally shared uninterrupted gameplay of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom ahead of its May release date. The new footage showed off four new abilities for Link, a closer look at the Sky Islands we've seen in all of the trailers, weapon durability's return, and a lot more.

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma kicked off the presentation by revealing the Nintendo Switch OLED Tears of the Kingdom special edition, which launches on April 28. Then, we jumped right into Tears of the Kingdom.

The gameplay kicked off with Link riding on a horse through the fields of Hyrule. The UI looks very similar to Breath of the Wild, with the temperature, weather, time, and minimap displayed in the bottom right corner, and Link's health and inventory in the upper left. However, the Rune icon has been replaced with an Apple symbol, indicating a food menu shortcut.

Aonuma indicated there are a lot of changes to Tears of the Kingdom's version of Hyrule, saying, "If we talk about all the changes today, we'll run out of time."

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Getting Limited Edition OLED Nintendo Switch

1 year 1 month ago

Nintendo has announced that Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is getting a limited edition OLED Nintendo Switch console. Preorders for the limited edition console are now live at Best Buy.

Announced during today's gameplay presentation, the console will be released slightly earlier than Tears of the Kingdom itself on April 28. This is fairly standard practice for Nintendo, as the console does not come with the game installed or in the box.

A limited edition Nintendo Switch Pro Controller was also announced, featuring a black and white design again decorated with gold patterns and the Tri-Force in the background. Completing the collection, Nintendo also revealed a Tears of the Kingdom themed carry case for the console. These will both launch alongside the game on May 12.

As shown in the images above, the Switch includes a white and gold docking station decorated with the Tri-Force. The Joy-Cons themselves have a base gold colour, with the left one decorated in a green pattern and the right with white, similar to the dock.

This will be the first fully-fledged Zelda themed Nintendo Switch console as Breath of the Wild launched alongside the base red and blue or grey hardware, though Skyward Sword HD did get its own special Joy-Cons.

The Amazon Spring Sale cuts 56% off the legendary Logitech G502 Hero gaming mouse

1 year 1 month ago

The Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson claimed that "the mark of a good action is that it appears inevitable in retrospect." Had he not died in 1894, he might’ve said the same thing about the Logitech G502 Hero showing up in Amazon sales events, although maybe it wouldn’t have sounded as profound.

That’s right, the G502 Hero – beloved by RPS readers, a longtime resident in our best gaming mouse list, and precursor to an inferior new model – is once again going cheap. A predictable development, albeit an entirely welcome one. This time it’s in the Amazon Spring Sale, with a better-than-half-price discount bringing it down to £35.

Crime Boss: Rockay City review: a baffling and incoherent Paydaylike

1 year 1 month ago

I was trying to explain the vibe of Crime Boss: Rockay City - a new Payday-like whose main USP is it's full of aging 90s-era-ish stars whose unifying trait is that they should not have been hired to do voice work for this game - to Graham as I was playing over the weekend. "You know how police procedurals all have at least one episode that's about gamers, so they have to make up a game for it? This feels like that. It's like a fake game made up by a Hollywood television producer."

A few hours later, after numerous short cutscenes in which Michael Rooker has to shout nonsensical American Football metaphors every so often, to justify the fact that his character is called Touchdown, and Michael Madsen growls about "candy" in a hard-living 65-year-old's voice coming out of an uncanny-vallyy 35-year-old's face, I text him an update: "It's also like that tweet that goes 'Bames Nond's having a stronk, call a bondulance'."

The new Lords of the Fallen takes aim at Elden Ring's massive soulslike success

1 year 1 month ago

Important questions first: what's the deal with Lords of the Fallen's name? The first one, you'll remember, came out the best part of a decade ago in 2014, but that was also called Lords of the Fallen - and this new one isn't a remake. Or maybe it is.

Talking to Cezar Virtosu, HexWorks' Creative Director, out at GDC, I realised there's a bit more to this one. You'll probably know Lords of the Fallen (2023) was, up until just last week's big tech reveal at the Unreal showcase, originally called The Lords of the Fallen, a confusingly close name to the original but at least one that's marginally different. Now, developer HexWorks has dropped the "The" - but before that there was another name too. The first plan was, Virtosu tells me, to call it Lords of the Fallen: the Dark Crusade, "because this is about the Dark Crusade, you'll see it in promotional materials - but that felt like we were possibly making DLC."

So, he explained, then the studio dropped the subtitle and added the "The", then realised the confusion and, also, that the studio really was "utterly rebooting it - this is Unreal [Engine] 5, none of the previous tech, none of the previous paradigms, it could only be Lords of the Fallen. It sounds meandering, but it's been a trip to arrive here!"

Here's 10 minutes of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom gameplay, new abilities, weapon fusing and sky islands

1 year 1 month ago

Nintendo has released 10 minutes of new footage for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, showing off new abilities, enemies and the sky islands.

In a special gameplay video, we get to see Link use a new Recall ability, that allows him to rewind time. Link uses this to ride a rock that had fallen from the sky back up to where it came from. Here, he then glides on to one of Tears of the Kingdom's sky islands, where he comes across new enemies known as "constructs".

This trailer also gives us a look at the new weapon fusing mechanic. Link can add keese eyeballs to arrows to make homing arrows, and mushrooms to shields (yes, mushrooms to shields). When the shroom shield is struck by an advancing enemy, the mushroom creates a cloud of spores that engulfs the fight in a fog. This fusing technique can also be used to make vehicles like rafts from stray logs and fans, or even flying ships, thanks to the Ultrahand ability.

Good Smile Company announced it will be selling the Sega S-Fire Re:Zero Emilia and Ram figures. Both Emilia and Ram are 1/7th scale figures. Emilia is slightly taller, as she’s about 240mm, which is about 9 and a half inches. Ram stands at 230mm, and that makes her about nine inches tall. Each one features outfits inspired by their adult selves in the series for the older versions of the character, while the child versions of Emilia and Ram wear outfits they’d worn as kids in Re:Zero.

The episode will air on YouTube and Twitch on April 28, 2023 at roughly 4am PT/7am ET/1pm CET. However, this time is subject to change. The broadcast will be entirely in Japanese.

Square Enix is now taking entries to appear as of March 28, 2023. Players have until April 5, 2023 to submit their homes for consideration. Entries must be submitted via Twitter with the hashtag #FoxclonHousing and include the estate name, estate owner, location and screenshots of the housing that you would like to see Foxclon visit. Much like the previous episode, there is no specific theme for this FFXIV housing showcase.

Jun Kazama was one of the first characters confirmed for Tekken 8. Now, we get to see what she can do. Bandai Namco's latest trailer for the game focuses on her.

Jun Kazama was a playable character in Tekken 2. However, in entries after that she only tended to appear as part of the story, be referred to, or show up in flashbacks. However, she was playable in Tekken Tag Tournament games and Tekken Revolution.

Here's the full Jun Kazama Tekken 8 trailer. It begins with her in a forest. She wonders if the fighting will end. The announcement also refers to her as the “Light of Hope” and brings up how she uses the Kazama Style. We get to see her fight her son, Jin Kazama, first. After that, Kazuya Mishima appears.
